Ubuntu :: Tsclient Settings Trumping Devilspie Config?
Jun 27, 2011
I have 2 1680x1050 monitors at work set in Twinview. What I'd like to do is have tsclient open a full screen on one of the monitors leaving the other screen free for local apps (IM, Chrome, email etc).If I set tsclient t "Operate in full Screen Mode" it takes over both monitors and there is no 1680x1050 option under "Use Specified Screen Size"I've used Devilspie in the past to do similar things, so I installed it and built the following config (Ok, I used gdevilspie ):
Code:

I have access to a "virtual" Windows server terminal, which I can access through my Ubuntu Linux via tsclient or rdesktop. Additionally, there are printer shares on this network, which can be accessed from any Windows PC on the network (including the "virtual" terminals); lets say the address is [URL]. Now, I open \printshares.company.com in the "virtual" terminal in rdesktop (avoiding tsclient since it has a Bug #94743 in tsclient (Ubuntu): Terminal Server Client isn't able to copy to/from clipboard) - and I can see all printers fine.. However, when I'm on my Linux machine directly on the work network, I try and do something like:
$ ping printshares.company.com
PING printshares.company.com (192.168.0.200) 56(84) bytes of data.
^C64 bytes from 192.168.0.200: icmp_req=1 ttl=124 time=10.4 ms

Is it possible to retrieve the - let's call them "connection settings" - from the Windows terminal session, so I could replicate them under Linux when running smbclient? the IT department running these Windows servers is quite irritated by people using Linux; and will offer no support to those kinds of "customers". Furthermore, if obtaining those settings requires some installation on the client session, since I don't have permissions to install anything on the Windows terminal session.

Searching for what appears to be "missing" CompizConfig settings in the CompizConfig Settings Manager. How to change the "Cube" into a "Cylinder" and how to enable floating windows (windows that seem to hover just over the cube when it is rotated. Were these eliminated? They were both available in 9.10.

I recently got rid of the different panels on my desktop and replaced them with AWN bars. However, in doing so I have lost my Wally system tray icon, which was my only means of accessing the Wally configuration tool.
Does anyone out there know of another way I can start this tool? Is there a command I can run from the CLI to bring it up?
Or, has a better alternative to Wally come out in the last few months which I should be using instead?

So I decided a while ago to download the newest distribution release, Lucid Lynx, and try it out on a LiveCD. The first thing I installed onto the LiveCD environment was CompizConfig Settings Manager. One question I have about it is... Why are so many of the plugins missing or limited?
In 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope, there are many plugin options, and to be honest, I use a large quantity of them. For example, a plugin I use on 9.04 called "Reflection." For those of you who don't know, reflection allows you to show an image in window decorations and shadows. This plugin is completely missing from CompizConfig Settings Manager in 10.04!
Another example, this time a limited one, is the Animations plugin. It's missing the option for closing animation called "Burn." This is an animation I LOVE showing off and using, yet it's... Gone.
Am I missing something? Did I do something wrong on installing it? Is there a way to get the parts that are missing?
Just in case you're wondering how I installed it, it was the popular method of using GNOME-Terminal and typing:
Code:
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

I have a maverick box plugged into two monitors, using the open source radeon driver and randr. Each monitor has a top and bottom gnome panel, with various widgets in each. There is no /etc/xorg.conf. The Problem: If I 1) remove both monitors to plug the box into my HDTV, or 2) connect to the X server remotely from a laptop, the panels all get shoved onto the one display. Do you have any advice on how I might specify different gnome panel 'profiles' for the different uses of this computer?

I'm trying (well aiming) to customize my desktop so that on login Terminator is on workspace 3 (split 3 ways and running lynx, irssi and top. I'm using gdevilspie to configure it but I understand and can use the normal config files. When I use gdevilspie to make a terminal background it works but when i try to do stuff with terminator it doesn't.
Here's my terminator config so far:
Code:
( if
( begin
( is ( window_class ) "terminator" )
)
( begin
( undecorate )
( spawn_sync "top" )
( set_workspace 3 )
( maximize_horizontally )
( center )
( below )
( set_viewport 3 )
( println "match" )
) )
Once I do get devilspie sorted I also want to make Terminator automatically split and run the correct commands.

I have connected my computer to my LCD-TV (HDMI-cable) to enjoy my movies and such, on a big screen. I have nVidia GeForce 7050 so in nvidia-settings I've been using the TwinView configuration which allows me to see both the monitor and the TV.
There was a bit of trouble-shooting but it worked just fine until yesterday when I changed my monitor to a new one and on the way probably messed up in nvidia-settings. I thought it would be easy to fix it but the configuration (in nvidia-settings) is stuck on "separete x-screen" and doesn't allow any changes at all. When I hit the "Detect display" nothing happens although I have the TV connected!
Maybe my xorg.config could tell somebody what is wrong. I've been messing around with the file and made lots of changes acc to different advices but I really don't understand the options and settings so I'm afraid I'll soon do something inreperable.

I'm interested to hear what config/settings files - or whole folders - you've managed to simply copy over from your previous installation and have working in the new. This can be either for specific programs or for parts of the system, but I suppose most of what people would find useful is getting some of their programs back to how they had them. These can be individual files or whole folders, but if there is a settings folder for a program but only one of the files is actually worth copying, just mention the one file and what it does. Also interested in hearing from KDE and Xfce users, for the benefit of those of us who have multiple desktop environments in the same system. (Besides, even those with only Gnome will use some of the great KDE apps like Amarok and K3b).
Here are my contributions:
(~/ denotes your home folder; any subfolders starting with a period [.] are hidden files or folders)
~/.cache/rhythmbox/covers (the folder containing all your album cover art displayed in Rhythmbox)
~/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts (any scripts you added to Nautilus will be in this folder)
~/.lyrics (the folder containing all your song lyrics displayed in Rhythmbox)
~/.local/share/rhythmbox/rhythmdb.xml (Rhythmbox's database file; if you were forced to edit this because of some incorrectly displayed tags, don't forget to copy it over).
~/.gconf/apps/rhythmbox/plugins/ (Rhythmbox's plugins folder; plugins should be accessible when you restart Rythmbox).
~/.bash_aliases (Terminal command aliases you may have created will be in this file).
~/.gconf/apps/nautilus/preferences/%gconf.xml (Nautilus folder preferences file)
~/.mozilla/firefox (Folder for Firefox settings, cache, bookmarks, etc. If there are 2 or more subfolders with names like 2tb4r91t.default just copy over the latest one, and make sure profiles.ini points to it)
~/.thunderbird (Mozilla Thunderbird folder with all accounts, emails, settings, etc)

I am using Angstrom Linux on a Beagleboard and it does not have CONFIG_HIDDEV enabled. How do I enable that config setting and rebuild the Kernel? I can build the Kernel as it stands using Bitbake, but the config file containing the CONFIG_HIDDEV=n is commented as "auto built, do not edit". Can I ignore that and edit it? Or is there some other way to control the "auto building" of it?

I installed gDevilspie and am using that to configure it, and I have Compiz running with a 2x2 viewport layout (2 horizontal and 2 vertical viewports).I have Devilspie working beautifully for any application that is assigned to either viewport 1 or 2. However, if I try to set them to viewports 3 or 4, the viewports on the bottom, Devilspie does not do anything.Devilspie does not give me any errors when I run it from the terminal. What I've noticed is that it only seems to work with horizontal viewports. I changed the viewport layout from 2x2 to 4x1 (so they were all on a single row), and then setting viewports 3 and 4 worked beautifully. However, with a 2x2 layout, I can only use viewports 1 and 2.
Furthermore, I noticed that if I had an application set to, say, viewport 1 (e.g., Firefox), then it would open in viewport 3 if I was currently viewing viewport 4. In other words, it's treating my viewports as if I have two sets of viewport 1 and viewport 2; one set on the top row, and the second on the bottom row.I'm not sure what's causing this, or if there's some sort of trickery that needs to be done to make the bottom row of viewports work, but any help would be appreciated. In case it's needed, I'm running Ubuntu 10.10, devilspie 0.22, gdevilspie 0.5, and compiz 0.8.6. Pasted below is one of the problem scripts (note that if I were to set it to viewport 1 or 2, it would work fine).

I want to be able to change the settings for my top down dual head display. Basically one monitor sits on top of another right now. How it was setup before was that they used to sit right next to each other so when you mouse over to the right it would go to the new screen. The problem is now when one sits on top of the other I want to be able to just mouse up instead of mousing over to the right. I don't want to use the gui to be able to do this. I want to find out what config file and specifically what setting in the config file would allow me to change this.

I have a recent install of Fedora14, and wanted to have outbound email sent to a smtp server elsewhere on the local network. I found the System->Preferences->Email Settings app and created a mail account with an smtp server. Now I am able to use mailx, mutt, and sendmail -- all send email correctly to the external server.
But I don't like being reliant on the GUI apps and wanted to know how this was done -- what system config files were affected. Assuming that my "smtp.xxx.com" server should show up somewhere, I grepped /home, /etc, and /var, but can't find it anywhere. On a whim I went into Evolution, deleted the mail account, and rebooted, but email STILL works. Where is this configured?

I searched for an answer to this problem for two days now, and only after I asked in #ubuntu (which I almost never do because it's so busy that my question is instantly upscrolled) did I find out the simple and undocumented solution. So I'm posting this for posterity and anyone who might make the same dumb mistake I did.
The problem I experienced was a disappearance of gnome borders from rdesktop through tsclient which had severe consequences on my ability to access remote computers.
Example image: [url]
As you can see there are no gnome borders to that paint window (via rdp) and the problem persists even in different resolutions. When in full screen mode, it is impossible to ctrl+alt+enter (or alt+tab, alt+esc, etc., I tried everything) out of the rdp session, it just blinks and stays in the window. I had to start>logout>disconnect just to get back to ubuntu. The only solution that ubuntu-pros offer is to turn off compiz, which I do not have nor have had on my machine. The sticky in this subforum explains:
Quote:
Where did my window borders go? - cc7gir
This is a common mistake caused by disabling some plugins in CompizConfig Settings Manager. To fix, open the manager (System > Preferences > CompizConfig Settings Manager) and find the "Window Decorations" plugin. Check the box and you're all set.
Fortunately, the mention of window decoration reminded me of some recent setting I came across. A few minutes of serious brain-scouring led me to the tsclient performance tab with a big fat check on "Hide window manager's decorations." I checked it two days ago thinking it would remove weird glowy-ness or whatever from the remote OS, allowing for faster communication and less lag; unknowingly, it just removes gnome's border from the window and ruins your whole remote access experience. I just unchecked it and connected, boom problem fixed.

'm wanting to remote into my Win7 machine at home to copy a file to my Ubuntu laptop. I've disabled my firewall. Worth noting is I have changed my default remote port to 22, though it shouldn't cause an issue AFAIK. I have selected to share one of my folders in my home directory. I select to map the folder or entire drive and connect. I get to the Ubuntu folder which I wish to copy items into, and in doing so I get this error:
"\tsclientshikeDocuments is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
Attempt to access invalid address."
Mapping a drive through Windows to Windows remote session has had no such issues. I also tried copying from the mapped drive and get the same issue. After the error occurs the drive is completely inaccessible till I reconnect.
Does anyone know how to get around this, or can suggest an alternative way of accessing my files remotely that will work?

I have just upgraded my FC14 laptop to FC15 and although tsclient was 'transferred', it would not run and so I did not have a working graphical interface to make RDP connections.
As the app wasn't running, I removed it and then discovered that tsclient is listed as 'orphaned' and 'deprecated' in the repos, with the latest working version being for FC13.
Is there really no GUI interface for using RDP in Fedora 15 - I can't believe I have to drop down to a command prompt to run rdesktop!?

I am trying to connect to my laptop using tsclient in ubuntu and UltraVNC in XP.
I open tsclient in linux, enter the laptop IP and protocol = RDP, hit connect and it opens the windows logon, I can connect and login, but its not using UltraVNC (its running on the XP), I know this because I close UltraVNC from the remote desktop and the connection still works so it seems its using the windows built in remote desktop.
How can I connect to UltraVNC instead of XP default remote desktop?
I want to do this because I read UltraVNC works better for screen refreshs, my currently remote desktop connection works really bad for screen refreshs.

So I was trying to remotely access my XP laptop from my Ubuntu laptop. I read up on tsclient and rdesktop and tried both methods. For example, in the terminal, I typed:
rdesktop <host ip>
However, this came back with the following error:
autoselected keyboard map en-us.
ERROR: <host ip>: unable to connect.
After a bit of internet searching, I found the solution to the keyboard problem. I typed:
rdesktop -k en-us <host ip>
This yielded the following error:
ERROR: <host ip>: unable to connect.
No clarification, no explanation. nothing. Does anyone have any ideas?

Code: ssh -ND localhost:8080 george@192.168.1.20 I had it all working on a virtual machine.. which was deleted What settings/lines do I need to change/add from the default OpenSSH config files to get tunnelling to work? I've Googled and AllowTcpForwarding is set to yes, as is X11Forwarding.. but it still doesn't work. Chrome can connect to the server, but says the connection was closed before any data was sent.

I am running a server with a GRSecurity patched Kernel 2.6.32.36. I've tried to optimize the kernel as much as I can and know it (removing options, not needed drivers and so on) and compiled the modules into the kernel (no loadable modules anymore). I've started with Slackware 13.0 and the default config for 2.6.29.6-huge. Still I am not sure what to remove/optimize further now.
My question: Is there a way to boot with a kernel with loadable modules, check which modules are really needed for this hardware, (do something like lsmod) and save the running configuration modules for a next kernel compile to be the default .config instead of writing them down by hand and search for the appropriate names in .config or during menuconfig? (Note: zcat /proc/config.gz > .config is NOT the way I want, as it gives me just the current kernel config)
