May 1, 2010In Lucid Lynx, if you install gnome-do, then the system freezes at startup. The only solution is to uninstall gnome-do.
any workaround to this? I really like having gnome-do launcher

Ubuntu Installation :: Freshly Installed System Hangs On Boot?
May 8, 2010I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 netbook remix on an acer Aspire One D250, specs below: Processor Name: Intel Atom N270
Processor Speed: 1.6 GHz
RAM: 1 GB
Graphics Card: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950
Storage Capacity: 160 GB
I had to resize the win partition, making a new partition for Ubuntu of about 15GB. I then installed the system. Everything went without problems. I was able to boot once, and verified that everything worked as intented.
However, after that, 90% of the times I reboot the bootup process hangs at a blank screen (with a blinking underscore), immediately after grub selection. If I select "recovery mode" in grub I can see the bootup messages, but the process hangs, all except one time, right after:

and does nothing more. There are no error messages or hints to the source of the problem, to my eyes.I've noticed that sometimes even the loading screen of the live cd will hang indefinitely, leaving me no choice other than a hard-reboot.
The rare times that the system does boot normally, everything works normally. I've tried installing using both the ext4 and ext3 filesystems. I couldn't find anything like this on the forums. Am I doing something wrong? Do you need more details?

I only installed the base system and when I try "apt-get install gnome" it tells me it can't find package "gnome".Now, I'm actually to much of a noob to try to build my own Debian from the base system and up. But it still seems to be the easiest option.When I try "Debian GNU/Linux on CDs" I can't get online. I start Iceweasl but it just gives me that message telling me that it can't find the website I tried to enter (e.g www.google.com).When I try the net install I get "Bad Archive Mirror" at the configure apt part. I've tried searching your forums for this and it seems to happen to a lot of people but I still can't find a solution in any of those threads

CentOS 5 :: Installed 5.5 From DVD And Hangs With GRUB
Dec 5, 2010I'm not sure what's going on with this install, but I started with a fresh install on a 250GB IDE disk, assigning /dev/hda1 to linux, and the rest (/dev/hda2) to swap. when it tries to boot.. I just get GRUB hang. Should I have installed a small FAT32 partition in the first sectors of the disk for the bootloader?
The bios in this machine is very old (Dell 410 precision) and Dell offers no updates, so I suspect this has something to do with how the old bios is trying to boot, but ?? not sure how to fix it. try lilo, or alternate bootloader???? Just looking for a fix to the boot problem. I would prefer to boot from the disk, booting from cd/floppy/pxe not so desirable.
Ubuntu :: Gnome Hangs After Login?
Jun 5, 2011I have today done a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10. Afer the install I needed to upgrade my video driver (nVidia GeForce MX). I managed to find some instructions to uninstall the existing Nouveau driver and install the nVidia one. This all worked absolutely fine. The first time.
On subsequent logins after the login screen the system just hangs. I get a background screen with shades or purple and a working mouse but nothing else.
I can get to a command prompt (CTRL-ALT-F1) and Ubuntu seems to be working fine - it just seems to be a graphics problem.
OpenSUSE Install :: 11.4 Hangs On Boot When Installed As XenServer Guest?
Jun 7, 2011I created an OpenSUSE 11.4 PV guest on XenServer 5.6, and about half the time, it fails to finish booting. it starts all the services, and fails immediately before it would display the login prompt. I've spent hours googling for this problem, and can't find any reference to it anywhere, meaning that I may be the first to experience it.
has anyone else done OpenSUSE 11.4 on XenServer 5.6 and had this problem? were you able to resolve it, and how?

I've got a k125 processor and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 series video card.Since upgrading to 10.10 with the new version of gnome my computer has started getting stuck on blank screen when booting the GUI. Not every time, but most times i boot.If I boot to command line through GRUB there's no problem. When I try to run gnome from the command line i get the same problem.

Oct 30, 2010Under GNOME, the X server hangs about every hour under regular use. When this happens, I can usually move the mouse pointer, but nothing else. I can't click anything, I can't type anything, etc. I have CTRL-ALT-Backspace configured to restart the X server, and that works if I do it before it hangs: after it hangs, that doesn't do anything. The only thing I can do right now is reboot the entire machine.How can I figure out why it is hanging? Also, can I somehow restart the X server without rebooting the entire machine?

Aug 4, 2010I have Mythbuntu 10.04 installed on an exclusive HTPC and working great... until tonight. After letting the system update some packages (161 packages if I remember right), I suddenly have an issue where the graphical system won't start. After researching I found three error messages that might be causing that.
1. At the start of splash screen I see "UUID=xxxxxxxCD7 not ready yet or not present" I checked in /etc/fstab and found that this is the swap partition. I don't remember seeing this before so this could be the culprit.
2. I'm not at the computer in question right now but I saw a Plymouth error about "mountall" and then the message "plymouth command failed". Not sure if this could be the main error.
3. after a while (usually ca. 1-2 min) I receive thousands of errors of the kind "out of memory"... "kill process XXXX" (process vary wildly e.g. dbus-daemon, mysql, etc)... "process killed"..."respawning"
After error 3, I'm not able to switch to graphical console (ctrl-alt-F7). If I was in the graphical console at this moment, I simply can't switch to the CLI console. I'm always afraid of updating my system since I've seen lots of things breaking afterwards (usually the proprietary graphic drivers) but this is really strange.
Fedora Installation :: Installed F On Ati Radeon HD 5145 - Setup Just Hangs Up Some Times
Jun 14, 2010I have an urgent major problem. I tried to install F8, F9, F10, F11 and F13 live but all gave the same problem, which is I can't install the OS.the problem is Fedora can't communicate with ATI Radeon HD 5145.....the setup just hangs up some times hangs when it tries to run anaconda....
Now F10 X86_64 was installed normally, but after the first reboot.. it gone crazy...and started to display rubbish...going to init 1 and trying to run the GUI I got error server X.

Fedora :: F13/12: Gnome Hangs During First 15-20 Minutes After Boot
Oct 25, 2010After Gnome logon it may hangs in any moment (window scroll, app start, opening url)
If sound was playing in that moment it continuously repeats last sample (about 1 second length), but do not respond to mouse move/click or keyboard. If to let it stay in this state nothing change - sound sample still repeats and no response to input. I need to reboot it by reset button. Sometime when I press reset nothing happen then after couple of seconds computer turns off, after 1-2 sec on and then starts booting.
During first 15-20 minutes after booting it may hangs multiple times but after that it works without problems.
Tried do not logon 20 minutes after boot - do not help, it hangs anyway. Only helps logon and do nothing for awhile.
This behavior have started after F12 installation. F13 installation changed nothing, only F11 worked perfectly.
Debian :: Gnome Hangs After Closing Root Terminal
Apr 21, 2015Running Gnome on Jessie. Have had Gnome hang a few times over the past few months. The hangs seem to be related to having open and / or closing a root terminal. It has happened on a Gateway AMD Phenom II tower and on my Gateway NV59 lappy with Pentium P6200.

Jul 19, 2010we have a server running with Suse linux many years. Meanwhile we changed server hardware about 4 times, mostly also updating to newest Suse version. We used to copy group, passwd and shadow to a backup medium, installed the new system and restored those files onto the new system and all was running fine. Now, some weeks ago we installed 11. on new hardware and after restoring those 3 files after rebooting the system hangs when starting GUI. I can boot into runlevel 3 and login with no problem, but when I boot into runlevel 5 mouse and keyboard are frozen. Also when starting GUI from runlevel 3 with startx mouse and keyboard immediately freeze. If I restore the files group, passwd and shadow as they came from fresh new installation I can reboot and login in runlevel 5 without problems.
OK, if I compare the userlist, as it is generated bei installation,there are some usernames I formerly not had in older Suse versions. I don�t know if this can make problems? I tried to edit the files, to combine the system users from 11.2 with the list of local user names from the old system but without success, again the mouse and keyboard freeze.So some questions arise:1) Why now mouse and keyboard freeze in xsystem, when there are changes in the user list (but only in runlevel 5)2) What is the correct way to save and restore users and groups from old to new system. I googled several hours but did not find a smart way. Maybee someon can point me to a link or a howto where I find the solution

May 1, 2010Just installed Lucid Lynx on my Desktop and after logging in I would get a 15-20 second pause before Gnome appeared. I found many many potential solutions for this problem on the Internet but none solved it. Finally figured out that it was due to the system seeing a floppy controller when I have no floppy drive. I was led to this conclusion by the following two lines in my syslog (System > Administration > Log FIle Viewer > Syslog).

Note the 12 second delay when it tries to read again.
So if you are getting the pause and seeing the same thing your system log then ...
Enter your BIOS and disable the floppy drive Use sudo and edit /etc/fstab commenting out the line with fd0 in it
Hope I can save someone else the headache of hunting through the Interwebs and finding 5 different solutions none of which worked. Learning as I go with Ubuntu so I didn't even know how to carry out most of the "solutions" which required more googling. I am migrating from FreeBSD due to application requirements

May 22, 2010I have been trying to switch to CLI mode for 2 hours now, I have searched possible solutions and I couldn't find any so I decided to make a new topic.
I'm running Kubuntu 10.04 x86_64. I need to log into CLI to stop KDE from running, but I just can't get there.
When I try ctrl+alt+F1 the only thing happens is that mouse pointer disappears and everything else (background, panels, etc.) stays the same, and frozen, no keyboard input helps.
Then when I perform ctrl+alt+F7 it gets me back into GUI. I have also tried sudo chvt 1, same effect. Then I tried to change inits. sudo init 1 and sudo init 2 give me just a blank black screen and where only reboot helps. init 3 doesn't do anything (guess I'm already running init 3 and thats why).

Sep 10, 2010I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 on a desktop. I then did the system updates and on the reboot the system now hangs at the splash screen before the login screen. I only get a blinking cursor on the text-based terminals. I don't see the grub menu, I assume because Ubuntu is the only OS on this machine. So I can't boot to single user or text-only mode.

Dec 19, 2010I'm running Ubuntu 10.10, 64-bit on an HP 8740w. Sometimes (I don't have the frequency yet, but it has happened a half-dozen times in the past couple of weeks) when I insert a USB storage device the system hangs, requiring a power-cycle. I have been careful to either eject or "safely remove" every USB device, but it still happens. I believe it only happens when I remove a device and later re-insert it, but I don't have enough data points to be sure.
Most of the time, I'm running VirtualBox, but I haven't captured the USB device in a VM.
First question - how can I go about figuring out what might be going wrong? Once it happens, my options are extremely limited (power switch). When this happened one time I left the system for 30+ minutes, and it did not recover.
Of course, when I wanted to see it, I did 10 insertions/removals without a hang.

Jun 15, 2011I'm new to ubuntu I last used it 2 years ago and did not like it one bit but a friend told me about 11.04 so thought id give it a go and I absolutely love it. its far superior to windows 7 imo. now my only problem so far is when installing updates it seems to hang on applying . but im sure there should be some indication of progress.
