Fedora :: X Server Hangs Under GNOME

Oct 30, 2010

Under GNOME, the X server hangs about every hour under regular use. When this happens, I can usually move the mouse pointer, but nothing else. I can't click anything, I can't type anything, etc. I have CTRL-ALT-Backspace configured to restart the X server, and that works if I do it before it hangs: after it hangs, that doesn't do anything. The only thing I can do right now is reboot the entire machine. How can I figure out why it is hanging? Also, can I somehow restart the X server without rebooting the entire machine?

Fedora :: F13/12: Gnome Hangs During First 15-20 Minutes After Boot

Oct 25, 2010

After Gnome logon it may hangs in any moment (window scroll, app start, opening url)

If sound was playing in that moment it continuously repeats last sample (about 1 second length), but do not respond to mouse move/click or keyboard. If to let it stay in this state nothing change - sound sample still repeats and no response to input. I need to reboot it by reset button. Sometime when I press reset nothing happen then after couple of seconds computer turns off, after 1-2 sec on and then starts booting.

During first 15-20 minutes after booting it may hangs multiple times but after that it works without problems.

Tried do not logon 20 minutes after boot - do not help, it hangs anyway. Only helps logon and do nothing for awhile.

This behavior have started after F12 installation. F13 installation changed nothing, only F11 worked perfectly.

Fedora :: Installing F13 X86 On X3950 M2 - Server Hangs Or Reboot

Oct 14, 2010

The server hangs or reboots when I install Fedora 13 x86 (32-bit) from DVD onto a quad core server (64GB of mem, 16 cores). Sometimes it gets as far as starting anaconda before the hang or reboot. I've been trying different combinations of kernel options, such as vesa, pci=msi, irqfixup, max_add=3072M, noapic, nolapic, noirqbalance, maxcpu=2...
But whatever I do, it hangs or it reboots. The 64 bit versions of RHEL5.5 and RHEL 6 Beta2 installs without problems.

Ubuntu :: Gnome Hangs After Login?

Jun 5, 2011

I have today done a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10. Afer the install I needed to upgrade my video driver (nVidia GeForce MX). I managed to find some instructions to uninstall the existing Nouveau driver and install the nVidia one. This all worked absolutely fine. The first time.

On subsequent logins after the login screen the system just hangs. I get a background screen with shades or purple and a working mouse but nothing else.

I can get to a command prompt (CTRL-ALT-F1) and Ubuntu seems to be working fine - it just seems to be a graphics problem.

Debian Multimedia :: Stretch With Gnome And Cinnamon - Computer Hangs While Switching Users

Sep 10, 2015

I'm using Debian Stretch with Gnome and Cinnamon. My desktop computer sports an nvidia geforce 970 gpu (this may be relevant, and it is the reason I had to go with stretch.) I'm not a very experienced linux user but I get along fine.

I'm sharing my computer with my mom and whenever we have to switch users, the computer seems to shut down for 35 seconds: the screen doesn't receive signal anymore. After a new user is chosen, it takes another 35 seconds to get to her session. This is embarassing because my os runs on an ssd and everything else is nice and fast. At first I thought it may be a matter of us two not using the same window manager or not using the "default" window manager, but changing window managers didn't work.

Today I learned about the existence of /var/log/syslog and I decided to check what happened to it when I switched users. I can't post the whole log of what happens because it is too big, but I put it on pastebin : [URL] ....

I understand almost nothing of what is written here, but I saw some interesting things:

- after 35 seconds intervals where nothing is logged, there is a stall on cpu detected (lines 68, 500)
- my gpu seems to have something to do in all this

Server :: LFTP Can't Connect To Proftpd Server (hangs)

Nov 28, 2010

I'm using ProFTPd as my FTP server on a CentOS 5 box. Since updating to version 1.3.3c, I seem to have very specific problems. Connections work quite fine with about any FTP client out there, including the basic ftp command from the Linux prompt. However, when trying to connect to that server with LFTP, things go wrong. When connecting, all I get is [Connecting] then [Logging in...] and then nothing. I have to add that SSL is forced off in lftp.conf (I read it could be the problem). I sometimes get a counter for reconnection, but it never works.

The command I use in lftp is : open -u <user>,<pass> <server_ip>, the ls for lftp to establish the connection. I don't see anything at all in the server's log. I just see "FTP session opened" and "FTP session closed" in /var/log/messages" and nothing in /var/log/secure. I can give you a strace if needed. Please keep in mind that the server WORKS with anything but LFTP and NCFTP (which I also tried).

Server :: Server Hangs When Given Find Command

I have found that our development server which is RHEL 3 (also ClearCase client) hangs when user gives find command. After some time of execution of the find command the server hangs. We have to hard-boot the server. Is this the normal behaviour of the Servers? This server which I am talking about is highly used.Sometimes 120 or more terminals will be opened and few compilation will be happening in the server. And same single user some times opens multiple terminals and works simulataneously. We have been monitoring the server and found out that during the workdays CPU usage % goes very high.

Fedora :: X Server - Gnome Screen Saver Cuts In And The System Remains 'as Is' Until 'woken Up' With The Mouse Or Keyboard

Dec 2, 2009

If I remain 'connected' (with the KVM) to the linux machine the gnome screen saver cuts in and the system remains 'as is' until 'woken up' with the mouse or keyboard. However, if I switch to another machine using the KVM, within a short time (maybe even minute or two) the linux machine goes dead. Now it has not crashed, as I can log in from a remote machine and do anything I need from a terminal, but the machine seems not to respond. I can't even use ctrl-alt-fn to switch to a console screen.

I initially tried entering telinit 3 from a remote machine but it made no apparent difference. However, if after telinit 3 I then killed the Xorg process and later issued a telinit 5 the X server restarted, but with a curious black 'notch' at the top of the screen. I am using an NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS graphics card. I am now adding the backtrace from Xorg.0.log. It seems that when the KVM switches to another machine for more than a very short time the X server crashes.

Do you think this package might be corrupted, and if so can I manually specify a different version or a different package? I don't know what else to do; ctrl+c to kill it results in dpkg hangups that yeah, I can purge, but I'd rather not be doing that more than is really necessary.

Ubuntu Servers :: 10.04 Server (no GUI) Hangs On Boot

Apr 30, 2010

I just installed 10.04 i386 Server(release version)last night on an older IBM workstation (sorry, for the life of me can't remember model and I'm at work now); P4 2.4, 512Mb RAM, generic Intel graphics. This was a base install (aside from OpenSSH) with no window mgr. The HDD was wiped during the install and GRUB2 wrote to the MBR.

The install went smoothly, and on the soft reboot after the install I got a shell and was able to login, etc. and even SSH in.I unplugged the machine, moved it, booted, and got a cursor in the upper-left of the screen for about 3 seconds, and then the monitor would enter power save mode. (I tried 2 different models of monitor). While the cursor was on the screen the HDD access LED was blinking with activity, but that would stop right before the screen would enter standby. Tried a few reboots with the same result.

I'm thinking this is not a video driver issue (as similar threads have suggested),because the splash screen for the install disc renders properly and on the first successful boot the shell rendered appropriately at a high resolution.I can hold down shift to enter the GRUB2 menu, which also renders at a higher-than-text resolution and is defaulted / displays the correct options.

Most other threads with a similar yet non-video issue centered around GRUB2 issues with a dual-boot machine, which mine is not.I did go in via rescue mode (off the install CD -- the rescue option of the GRUB menu has the same result as a standard boot), and checked that my grub.cfg was correct, and I ran grub-install to no avail, and also ran grub-mkconfig on a subsequent boot to no avail, yet the grub.cfg generated appeared identical to the original generated during install.

The partition/file system is default layout.

20 Gb IDE (/dev/sda)
/dev/sda1 /boot ext2
/dev/sda2 Ext

[code]....

I'd be happy to give more info if someone has a troubleshooting direction in which to go.

Ubuntu Servers :: Server Hangs On Boot

Jul 27, 2010

I'm trying to track down a problem with my server. Basically, I can get it to boot with a LiveCD and do rescue stuff with it - I just can no longer get it to boot. I've been slowly working my way through all of the error messages that come up during the boot process, and knocking them off one by one. Right now, they're fairly minor.

I'm trying to find out what the big issue is by looking at the logs. The last thing that it does is bring up apache2, says [OK] and then hangs. I've tried to do ls -lustR on /var/log to see what's the last log touched, and that's syslog or boot.log, but the last entry says something along the lines of Apache2 is up and running.

Where else should I look?

Server :: MD RAID5 Hangs On Directory Creation

Mar 26, 2010

So here it is, I have a fileserver setup on Ubuntu Server 9.10 AMD64. In this system is 4 1.5TB SATAII drives. They are configured in RAID5 using MD. Now everything is working beautify, except when you need to create a directory. When you do, the system hangs for about 30 seconds. The I/O wait in top jumps up as well. Then the directory is created and everything works once again.

The odd part is it is only Directory creation that does this. I can copy, move, download and stream files off the server perfectly. I am baffeled as to what is causing it. It might be related to the fact that I expanded the array from 3 to 4 drives, it was after that, that I first noticed the problem.

Software :: Rsync Hangs And Locks Server

Aug 20, 2010

I've had an interesting experience that is completely unprecedented in my history of using rsync. As I write this I'm listening to my server squeal like a stuck pig as the Adaptec RAID controller rebuilds my RAID-5 array (and doesn't lose any data, I HOPE!!!!) rsync is an integral part of my Disaster Recovery plan at the office. I have a NFS server that hosts all the business critical VMs that my company runs and a couple of VMware hosts that link thereto and attempt to make the best of things. I know NFS isn't the most optimal solution, but that's a conversation for another thread.

My rsync woes began tonight and took an unexpected turn for the worst as I was attempting to implement the most white-knuckled portion of this scenario. The Process:

1. A script runs that shuts down all VMs that access the NFS array
2. Post-shutdown, the server then rsyncs to a local HDD for fast-backup and to minimize downtime
3. During daily operation, another script will rsync the backed-up VMs to an offsite server that keeps them in case we have a disaster scenario

My plans never made it to step 3 since rsync started crashing during the local portion (step 2).My Hardware:

1. Adapted 5405 4-port hardware RAID controller
2. 3 x Western Digital Black SATA 2.0 HDDs (1TB each) in RAID-5 config
3. 1 x Western Digital Black SATA 2.0 HDD (2TB) in solo-mode on the same controller
