Ubuntu :: System Hangs For 15-20 Seconds After Login

May 1, 2010

Just installed Lucid Lynx on my Desktop and after logging in I would get a 15-20 second pause before Gnome appeared. I found many many potential solutions for this problem on the Internet but none solved it. Finally figured out that it was due to the system seeing a floppy controller when I have no floppy drive. I was led to this conclusion by the following two lines in my syslog (System > Administration > Log FIle Viewer > Syslog).

May 1 18:27:04 Desk-Ubuntu kernel: [ 34.636665] end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
May 1 18:27:16 Desk-Ubuntu kernel: [ 46.813441] end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0

Note the 12 second delay when it tries to read again.

So if you are getting the pause and seeing the same thing your system log then ...

Enter your BIOS and disable the floppy drive Use sudo and edit /etc/fstab commenting out the line with fd0 in it

Hope I can save someone else the headache of hunting through the Interwebs and finding 5 different solutions none of which worked. Learning as I go with Ubuntu so I didn't even know how to carry out most of the "solutions" which required more googling. I am migrating from FreeBSD due to application requirements

OpenSUSE Install :: Upgraded To 11.3, System Hangs Every 10 Seconds For Half A Second?

Jul 20, 2010

I upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3 and found that there was no 3d support with the "nouveau" driver for the nvidia card. Then I linked in the nvidia repo and installed the nvidia driver. After that I noticed I had 3d support but things were a bit choppy, regardless of compositing or other tasks running. It appears that every 10 seconds the CPU load shoots up (on all 4 cores) and during about half a second all other activity is postponed, including mouse clicks, window moves, animations etc. Using the system monitor watching the CPU load, I see a train of load peaks traveling from right to left, 10 second intervals. Also done a graph on "paged in pages", same pattern, peaks on 6500/s. 11.2 Never exhibited this kind of behavior. Since I haven't found any similar postings I thought that some leftover of 11.2 may be the cause of this and since I am not an expert I would welcome any suggestions on how to tackle this.ystem: quad core Q6600, 3Gb mem, GEforce 8600GT, etcFwiw the load peaks are doubled, meaning peaks at 0, 3, 10, 13, 20, 23 etc seconds

Ubuntu :: Unable To Login / After Couple Seconds Returned To The Login Splash Screen?

Oct 10, 2010

I recently powered up my netbook... Selected my user log in, entered my password, and after a couple seconds I briefly see what looks to be the console and am returned to the login splash screen... I can Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get to the console and log in... but that is as far as I can get. This is the case for Gnome, Remix, and Remix 2D.

I can sudo apt-get (update, upgrade, etc) as well. It is the right password because if I type in a wrong one it presents an authentication failure dialog box.

How can I fix my log in screen and get to my desktop? I am Currently running 10.04.... waiting to get 10.10

I am looking to speed up my boot time; it is currently around the 2-2.5 minute mark from Grub to desktop (including about 15 seconds at the login screen while I type my password).

I have forced ureadahead to reprofile, and have rebooted a few times until the boot time is fairly stable/consistent.

No xorg errors and only one warning ((WW) The directory "/usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic" does not exist.)

However, dmesg reports the following:

Ubuntu :: Autologin Hangs At Shell For A Few Seconds?

Jan 20, 2011

I created a ubuntu distro that originated from ubuntu server and have an xserver installed with openbox and am having problems getting autologin working. I had slim installed and everything seemed to be working except as soon as the monitor went into sleep mode and I moved the mouse to get it back it just came up to the shell again. With that problem I decided to remove slim and go with NODM and that worked perfectly for what I wanted but I was messing around with a few other configuration stuff and when I rebooted everything was fine until after the splash when it would normally boot into X it would show the shell for a about 10 seconds before it would boot to X.

Fedora :: Flash Objects In Firefox - Hangs For 30 Seconds Or So

Aug 12, 2010

I'm having a few problems with flash objects in Firefox. When I load a page with flash - ..... for example - the flash object is just a grey box and firefox hangs for 30 seconds or so. When firefox finally responds again all that's left of the flash object is a black box. Does anybody know what the problem is? And even better - what I can do to fix it!

For background info - flash was working fine in F12 before I updated to F13. Used the install DVD for F13 to perform the update. I'm running F13 64bit with KDE, Firefox is showing Shockwave Flash in the addons list. Originally installed the flash plugin using the instructions from mjm wired:

Code:
[mirandam@charon Download]$ sudo yum install nspluginwrapper.{i686,x86_64} alsa-plugins-pulseaudio.i686
[mirandam@charon Download]$ sudo yum install flash-plugin I've tried removing those packages and reinstalling but no luck.

OpenSUSE :: Nvidia Settings Hangs - Whole Desktop To Freeze For About 5-10 Seconds

Oct 28, 2010

Sometimes, running "nvidia-settings" will cause the whole desktop to freeze for about 5-10 seconds, spike the Xorg CPU usage up to 100%, until the settings appear where everything goes back to normal.

Running "nvidia-settings" from a terminal does not show any output and restarting X does not help. Any ideas how to figure out what is happening, any places to look for log files?

I am using an up-to-date openSUSE 11.3 (64-bit), KDE 4.5.2, an NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT and the proprietary NVIDIA driver 260.19.12, which I installed manually following the instructions from

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Freezes 10 Seconds After Login In Kde

Jun 27, 2010

I decided to install ubuntu again and downloaded 10.04. I had some issues installing with the desktop version, but everything installed fine with the alternate version.Now if I want to log in (on the KDE login-screen) the KDE-loading-symbols show up just as they are supposed to do, the desktop shows up (I can see "Desktop Folder and uBlog) and suddenly the mouse/system freezes. Neither Ctrl-Alt-Del isn't working nor Ctrl-Alt-F2 gives any response, all I can do is to reset my computer.

When I use Gnome as a desktop enviroment the computer totally freezes at the login-screen, without giving me any chance of logging in. Things I already tried: noapic, nomodeset, noacpi settings when booting, I successfully installed the latest ATI-Driver for my 3870, I disabled compiz.The kdm log says that there's some problem with an i-bus-daemon. Disabling/restarting the daemon has no effect on the behavior of my installation.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Login Delay - Receive 30 To 40 Seconds Lag

Sep 15, 2010

When I log into my ubuntu 10.04 after booting my computer, I receive a 30-40 second lag before I can actually log in. During this lag, I can move the cursor and the login background is shown, but the computer seems to be doing nothing. It is as if there is a sleep command before I even log in. I am using a Sager 2096 computer but I got this computer for free and it did not come with the specs. I had installed a 64-bit version of Ubuntu because this computer has a 64-bit architecture. However, whenever I install software, it always has to install the x86 version because the x64 is "not supported." Perhaps I have a mix of 32 and 64 bit programs and that is what is screwing it up?

Ubuntu Installation :: Freezes Up 30 Seconds Or So After A Successful Login?

Feb 17, 2010

Problem: Ubuntu freezes up 30 seconds or so after a successful login.

Background:I am running a Compaq Presario SR5030NX. It has had issues for a while with running Ubuntu properly. My computer suffers from this bug. I have managed to get the LiveCD running by adding the following to my boot parameters:

Code:
vga=792 i915.modeset=0
When I was running the LiveCD I found that it would freeze after about 30 seconds. I solved this problem by again changing the boot options. This time I:Press F6
Check noapic, nolapic, and pci=noacpi

I then proceeded to install Ubuntu.

My problem arose when Ubuntu did not modify grub.cfg to match the setting I needed in order to boot. I managed to modify in some of the settings correctly, I believe at least, but not all of them.

In its current state Ubuntu is able to boot, but freezes 30 seconds or so after a successful login. If I do not graphically login, I do still have access to VTY1-6. The machine does not freeze until a successful graphical login has been made.

Below is the relevant section of my grub.cfg:

Code:
menuentry "Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic" {
recordfail=1
if [ -n ${have_grubenv} ]; then save_env recordfail; fi
set quiet=1
insmod ext2
set root=(hd0,2)
code....

On another note:
The liveCD I have been running for 6 months is BackTrack 3 Final. Which does not have this issue at all. I would wager a guess that BackTrack 4 does though as it is based off Ubuntu instead of Slax.

General :: Getting TeamViewer To Start Up 30/60 Seconds After Login?

Nov 14, 2010

configuring TeamViewer to start up 30 to 60 seconds after login.

At the moment, TV starts up straight away at login, but seeing as the wireless internet isn't connected straight away, TV's trying to connect without a connection, which is a problem when the wireless does connect as it will get stuck with 'Activating TeamViewer'.

Obviously, this is a straight forward task, just exit and then re-open TV. But seeing as I want to run a headless server, carrying my monitor and mouse to the server every time I want to activate TV isn't ideal.

The way I did set up TeamViewer to start up on login, was by dragging the icon into System>Preferences>Start-up Applications, so if the solution is to create a script of some sort.

OpenSUSE :: System Beeps Every 2 Seconds When A Key Is Pushed

Feb 23, 2011

We have a weird problem with two PC's running SUSE 11.3. The built in PC speaker beeps every 2 seconds when you are typing.

One of the PC's (an old celeron with intel graphics, 32 bit suse 11.3) has had this problem for at least a year but we don't use the keyboard much. The other one is a Core i5 with nvidia graphics (suse 11.3 64 bit). This machine was fine until it was upgraded from suse 11.2 (with zypper dup).

It is like a torture and is driving us nuts. It only does this in X11 - text mode is fine. It's probably something obvious but we are stumped.

Ubuntu :: Hangs Sometimes On Login?

Mar 10, 2011

I've had my system about a month -- 10.10, i7, 8GB RamLast week, I installed KDE and xFce desktop environments.Two things I wonder if you can comment on:1) It boots up into kubuntu instead of Ubuntu, and presents the kubuntu login screen, even when I last used the Gnome environment.This is the curiosity.When I log in, the screen brightens and then plays the Ubuntu default sound, and drops me into the Gnome desktop.2) This is the issue -- every so often , maybe every 5 or 6 logins, after I have logged in, the screen up as normal, but just sits there, empty. I have to Ctrl+[F2] to log into the text interface and issue init 6 to reboot. On the second attempt, it takes me into the Gnome desktop as at other times.
