Ubuntu :: USB Insertion Hangs System / Stop It To Do So?
Dec 19, 2010
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10, 64-bit on an HP 8740w. Sometimes (I don't have the frequency yet, but it has happened a half-dozen times in the past couple of weeks) when I insert a USB storage device the system hangs, requiring a power-cycle. I have been careful to either eject or "safely remove" every USB device, but it still happens. I believe it only happens when I remove a device and later re-insert it, but I don't have enough data points to be sure.
Most of the time, I'm running VirtualBox, but I haven't captured the USB device in a VM.
First question - how can I go about figuring out what might be going wrong? Once it happens, my options are extremely limited (power switch). When this happened one time I left the system for 30+ minutes, and it did not recover.
Of course, when I wanted to see it, I did 10 insertions/removals without a hang.
is there a way to have my volume level change to a specified level when i insert my headphones to avoid having my ears blasted with music because i forget to turn the sound down when shutting off my computer last time? perhaps a alsa patch or a script?
I am trying to figure out how to make Fedora run a certain command when I insert a USB device. Any ideas. I'd also like it to do different things based on which usb device I plug in. I can write the script I just do not know the trigger sequence.
I am using Ubuntu marvic amd64 10.10. I installed ns-allinone 2.34. then I inserted vbr traffic according to one of forum from this linux " Insertion steps of VBR into NS2.34" I made the following changes
Makefile, line 36 : CC = gcc-4.3 Makefile, line 37 : CPP = g++-4.3 vbr_traffic.cc in ns2.34/tools then Makefile : tools/vbr_traffic.o of 183
then I use the command cd ns-allinone-2.34/ns-2.34/ && mv ns ns234 && make after that I delete the ns. with the new command I run the script with every time puase time 0 and simulation time 200, 10 250, 20 300, 40 400..... with DSR after completion of simulation, when i was try to plot graph between throughputs of receiving bits vs Maximul end to end delay, every time I got the delay more than 90, 100, etc so how can I reduce that problem. I thought problem was in insertion of vbr.
I'm trying to run clamAV antivirus on USB insertion. I read about "udev" but it seems to be very complicated. I thought about running the script when the /media folder changes. I couldn't do that either.
I'm running MS "XP" on virtualbox and I'm sharing the /media folder from the host to the guest that's why I need an ON-DEMAND antivirus that scans the usb disk on insertion. (Light scan[neglecting archives and large files] is preferred to not overload the processor).
The script will contain the clamAV command line. The problem is how to set the execution time of the script...
I have Mythbuntu 10.04 installed on an exclusive HTPC and working great... until tonight. After letting the system update some packages (161 packages if I remember right), I suddenly have an issue where the graphical system won't start. After researching I found three error messages that might be causing that.
1. At the start of splash screen I see "UUID=xxxxxxxCD7 not ready yet or not present" I checked in /etc/fstab and found that this is the swap partition. I don't remember seeing this before so this could be the culprit.
2. I'm not at the computer in question right now but I saw a Plymouth error about "mountall" and then the message "plymouth command failed". Not sure if this could be the main error.
3. after a while (usually ca. 1-2 min) I receive thousands of errors of the kind "out of memory"... "kill process XXXX" (process vary wildly e.g. dbus-daemon, mysql, etc)... "process killed"..."respawning"
After error 3, I'm not able to switch to graphical console (ctrl-alt-F7). If I was in the graphical console at this moment, I simply can't switch to the CLI console. I'm always afraid of updating my system since I've seen lots of things breaking afterwards (usually the proprietary graphic drivers) but this is really strange.
I have Debian Jessie installed. When I insert a non-encrypted DVD movie DVD into the drive, a pop-up menu appears asking me what I want to do (e.g. "Open with vlc media player, etc.).
When I insert an encrypted DVD movie DVD into the drive, no pop-up menu appears.
I am able to play the encrypted movie DVD in vlc, and libdvdcss2 is installed. So my question is not about playing the DVD but rather about the failure to automatically detect it.
This behaviour happens in Gnome, Mate, and XFCE. (KDE has a Plasma Device Notifier Widget that is able to detect the encrypted DVD).
My other computer with Debian Wheezy is able to automatically recognize the encrypted DVD.
Here are the relevant lines from /var/log/syslog after the insertion of the encrypted DVD:
Code: Select allJun 21 14:52:04 debian-think-pad kernel: [ 2012.208964] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE Jun 21 14:52:04 debian-think-pad kernel: [ 2012.208972] sr 1:0:0:0: [sr0] Jun 21 14:52:04 debian-think-pad kernel: [ 2012.208977] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current] Jun 21 14:52:04 debian-think-pad kernel: [ 2012.208986] Info fld=0x400
[Code] ....
Here are the relevant lines from /var/log/syslog after the insertion of the non-encrypted DVD:
Code: Select allJun 21 14:55:39 debian-think-pad kernel: [ 2226.518955] UDF-fs: INFO Mounting volume 'Check Please', timestamp 2009/06/02 17:43 (1e5c) Jun 21 14:55:39 debian-think-pad udisksd[1161]: Mounted /dev/sr0 at /media/daniel/Check Please on behalf of uid 1000 Jun 21 14:55:39 debian-think-pad org.gtk.Private.UDisks2VolumeMonitor[1081]: index_parse.c:191: indx_parse(): error opening /media/daniel/Check Please/BDMV/index.bdmv Jun 21 14:55:39 debian-think-pad org.gtk.Private.UDisks2VolumeMonitor[1081]: index_parse.c:191: indx_parse(): error opening /media/daniel/Check Please/BDMV/BACKUP/index.bdmv
Whan I run the mount command after inserting the non-encrypted DVD the following line appears in the output:
Code: Select all/dev/sr0 on /media/daniel/Check Please type udf (ro,nosuid,nodev,relatime,uid=1000,gid=1000,umask=77,iocharset=utf8,uhelper=udisks2)
Granted, this issue is not a major problem as I can start vlc and play the DVD. However, it might be useful to some new users to Linux to have the pop-up menu appear. Additionally, it would be interesting to learn why it works in Debian Wheezy and not in Debian Jessie.
My only glitch with Ubuntu, which runs flawlessly on this beast, otherwise.I have spent more than 50 hours on this problem. In my case, inserting headphone jack doesn't mute internal speakers. There is sound in the headphone though.alsamixer ot gnome-alsamixer doesn't even show the headphone option. So I cannot change their values.I have tried model= various options, with no avail.I have uploaded my information to alsa projct and the link is: http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=18...788fc1458ff422
I have just bought a DVB-T usb dongle to watch some TV. The software I'm using is vdr, which has to be started through the /etc/init.d/vdr service. I have created a udev script that executes the service on device insertion. It works nicely, however now when I boot up the computer it takes ages to get to desktop. I believe it is because of the WAIT_FOR part. But without this part, the service starts too soon because the usb dongle has been inserted but the firmware has not finished loading. Can someone point out an alternative way to do it? The script is here [URL].
ubuntu could delay kernel module installation until device is inserted?Take my usb ath9271 wifi adapter as an example: when kernel boot up, no ath modules are installed until usb wifi apdapter is inserted, ath related modules are insmod.Could anybody how to achieve this? udev or something else?
i have 11.04 in my pc.when im using the vlc media player, after playing 5-10 min, its going to be stopped automatically and system will become very slow . so again i am going to restart the system .after restarting the system my theme going be changed . i couldn't figure out whats the problem . help me to get out of this.
Well i just installed ubuntu and its amazing but after playing around a little i installed compiz and when i restarted my laptop it just wont let me log on it keep freezing. i dono what to do how do i over write it or replace it or fix this problem?
iv looked on the wiki and tried what it says it doesn't work
I have a HP Laptop with Ubuntu Hardy installed. The system beep makes rapid clicking sound at login window that slowly dissipate and clicking that, so far I can only fix by rebooting, when I play music, reboot after hibernating, and when waking up from suspend. I've turned the system beep off in System/Preferences/Sound but it doesn't do anything.
I just installed ubuntu 9.10 alternate version, but the problem is it is freezing after sometime. mouse stops working, not keyboard activity nothing else.
I removed exim4 because I dont need it but then 3 new processes popped up after, They are Master, Pickup and, qmgr. I read about them having something to do with the system mail agent, I dont use mail. How can I completely remove the system mail so these processes go away without coming back?
I'm using a Toshiba satellite U400 and just upgraded from 10.04 LTS to 10.10 and now, every time I try to suspend the PC, it hangs. Before, 10.04 LTS worked perfectly.
I searched ad could only find some talks about 'vt switch' [URL] but couldn't understand if there is a solution to the problem and if yes what is it
VLC media player hangs OS when starting, presumably as it loads a new video file (.mp4 in my case). It doesn't happen every time, but after a few days it eventually freezes the system requiring a reset. Google shows many complaints on this, but no fix. Is there a solution?
We use Ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) as a backup server. The machine is quite ild but still working well. All works very good but every few days it is crashed and freez. I do not know what real happeny since i do not work on it, but tring to ping it fail and the monitor is blank.
I am using Ubuntu 9.10. Every time I try to reboot my system it hangs. Shutdowns work properly. I've done multiple re-installations. Nothing I've tried fixes the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Just installed Lucid Lynx on my Desktop and after logging in I would get a 15-20 second pause before Gnome appeared. I found many many potential solutions for this problem on the Internet but none solved it. Finally figured out that it was due to the system seeing a floppy controller when I have no floppy drive. I was led to this conclusion by the following two lines in my syslog (System > Administration > Log FIle Viewer > Syslog).
May 1 18:27:04 Desk-Ubuntu kernel: [ 34.636665] end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0 May 1 18:27:16 Desk-Ubuntu kernel: [ 46.813441] end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
Note the 12 second delay when it tries to read again.
So if you are getting the pause and seeing the same thing your system log then ...
Enter your BIOS and disable the floppy drive Use sudo and edit /etc/fstab commenting out the line with fd0 in it
Hope I can save someone else the headache of hunting through the Interwebs and finding 5 different solutions none of which worked. Learning as I go with Ubuntu so I didn't even know how to carry out most of the "solutions" which required more googling. I am migrating from FreeBSD due to application requirements
I have been trying to switch to CLI mode for 2 hours now, I have searched possible solutions and I couldn't find any so I decided to make a new topic.
I'm running Kubuntu 10.04 x86_64. I need to log into CLI to stop KDE from running, but I just can't get there.
When I try ctrl+alt+F1 the only thing happens is that mouse pointer disappears and everything else (background, panels, etc.) stays the same, and frozen, no keyboard input helps.
Then when I perform ctrl+alt+F7 it gets me back into GUI. I have also tried sudo chvt 1, same effect. Then I tried to change inits. sudo init 1 and sudo init 2 give me just a blank black screen and where only reboot helps. init 3 doesn't do anything (guess I'm already running init 3 and thats why).
I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 on a desktop. I then did the system updates and on the reboot the system now hangs at the splash screen before the login screen. I only get a blinking cursor on the text-based terminals. I don't see the grub menu, I assume because Ubuntu is the only OS on this machine. So I can't boot to single user or text-only mode.
I'm new to ubuntu I last used it 2 years ago and did not like it one bit but a friend told me about 11.04 so thought id give it a go and I absolutely love it. its far superior to windows 7 imo. now my only problem so far is when installing updates it seems to hang on applying . but im sure there should be some indication of progress.
Got a used Lenovo Thinkpad r61i and put Ubuntu 9.10 on it. Every time I turn it on it prompts me to give it a password for someone else's internet. This a password I do not know and I use an ethernet cable for internet so it's really annoying. Any way to make it stop?
