Ubuntu :: Ctrl+alt+f1 Hangs System Instead Of Switching To CLI ?

May 22, 2010

I have been trying to switch to CLI mode for 2 hours now, I have searched possible solutions and I couldn't find any so I decided to make a new topic.

I'm running Kubuntu 10.04 x86_64. I need to log into CLI to stop KDE from running, but I just can't get there.

When I try ctrl+alt+F1 the only thing happens is that mouse pointer disappears and everything else (background, panels, etc.) stays the same, and frozen, no keyboard input helps.

Then when I perform ctrl+alt+F7 it gets me back into GUI. I have also tried sudo chvt 1, same effect. Then I tried to change inits. sudo init 1 and sudo init 2 give me just a blank black screen and where only reboot helps. init 3 doesn't do anything (guess I'm already running init 3 and thats why).

OpenSUSE :: Using Ctrl + Alt + Fx (switching To Text Mode)?

Aug 7, 2010

I have been using SuSE Linux in text mode for the longest time (since 8.0) and I'm often more comfortable working in that mode. I have just installed 11.3 with GNOME as a fresh install on my dual-boot laptop and I am pretty happy with the way things work. But I still languish for my text mode from time to time.

So: I know about right clicking on the desktop and selecting "Open in Terminal" and that should really solve my needs, but I read here in an older thread about using Ctrl + Alt + F2 (as it happens, it can be F1, F2, F3, etc.) so I decided to try it out. Well, when I do that, I get exactly what I expected --- a black text screen with a login: prompt and I can do all my little texty things just as sweet as can be. Except for one thing: I can't get back! The only way I've been able to get back to a GUI is to use "shutdown -r now" as user: root. Also, Ctrl + Alt + F1 removes the GUI completely for all four terminals. Can someone tell me more about this function where I might read an "info" or "man" about it? I don't even know what it is called, so it is hard to know how to search. (Admittedly, I haven't tried Google yet.) uname -a ==> Linux linux-127g.site 2.6.34-12-default #1 SMP 2010-06-29 02:39:08 +0200 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Ubuntu :: Map Ctrl+W In Hebrew Layout(which Is Actually A Ctrl+') To Be A Ctrl+w?

There is no workaround for it as I see by now, so I am trying to get it work this way:I want to map Ctrl+W in Hebrew layout(which is actually a Ctrl+') to be a Ctrl+w. Here is what I got from xmodmap:Code:$ xmodmap -pke | grep 25keycode 25 = w W Cyrillic_tse Cyrillic_TSE apostrophe WAs you can see, there are pairs for each layout, each pair tells what happens without and with the Shift key pressed.

Debian Multimedia :: Stretch With Gnome And Cinnamon - Computer Hangs While Switching Users

Sep 10, 2015

I'm using Debian Stretch with Gnome and Cinnamon. My desktop computer sports an nvidia geforce 970 gpu (this may be relevant, and it is the reason I had to go with stretch.) I'm not a very experienced linux user but I get along fine.

I'm sharing my computer with my mom and whenever we have to switch users, the computer seems to shut down for 35 seconds: the screen doesn't receive signal anymore. After a new user is chosen, it takes another 35 seconds to get to her session. This is embarassing because my os runs on an ssd and everything else is nice and fast. At first I thought it may be a matter of us two not using the same window manager or not using the "default" window manager, but changing window managers didn't work.

Today I learned about the existence of /var/log/syslog and I decided to check what happened to it when I switched users. I can't post the whole log of what happens because it is too big, but I put it on pastebin : [URL] ....

I understand almost nothing of what is written here, but I saw some interesting things:

- after 35 seconds intervals where nothing is logged, there is a stall on cpu detected (lines 68, 500)
- my gpu seems to have something to do in all this

Ubuntu :: Freezes Mouse After Changing A Tab (with Ctrl+tab, Alt+#) Or Closing It (ctrl+w)?

Nov 11, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 x64 and already am really annoyed by Firefox, which freezes my mouse after changing a tab (with ctrl+tab, alt+#) or closing it (ctrl+w). After about one second, i can continue working as usual. Changing Tabs by just clicking on one does not freeze anything...Maybe some of you would think now if I am crazy because of complaining about such a little thing, but it is really annoying if you are used to work fluently with ff.Edit:I today noticed, that not only shortcuts in firefox, but all Hotkeys freeze my mouse for a second. For examle ctrl+c, ctrl+v, super+e or anything else.Do you have any Idea what causes this behaviour? Reinstalling ubuntu didn't change anything

Ubuntu :: Nautilus Causes Complete System Freeze; Ctrl+Alt+Fx Doesn't Respond?

May 29, 2011

All of these freezes happen either while I'm in Nautilus or I'm opening Nautilus. The usual Ctrl+Alt+Fx (x being one to six) to get into the backstage does not work. If I have some music open then it would start looping the last couple of seconds. Now generally I would go check the logs, but I see no nautilus logs so what should I check? This is all pretty recent. I think that this started to happen when one day exim4 (and some packages all marked exim) got updated but I cannot be certain. Major playing-around after that would be some Wine issues but the system froze once before all that Wine fun.So step one, what should I check?

EDIT: OK, .xsession-errors ouput:
Code:
/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...

CentOS 5 :: Ctrl S During Init Script Can Cause System Hang?

Sep 6, 2010

I am running Centos 5.5 with all the GUI stuff, including nx server and webmin.Sometimes while watching the bootup messages because my eyesight is very poor.I hit <ctrl s> to pause the output so I can read some details. If I do this late in the init sequence - it often briefly stops the output then the screen disappears under a blue wash (presumably something to do with the GUI login screen ot screensaver??)but the login screen never appears. Also it seems that the script never completes because the imap, webmin and http servers don't appear to have started.

I haven't found any satisfactory way out of it. I can't get back to a console terminal (I've tried ctrl c, d, z, etc.). As luck would have it the nx server has started so I can open an nx session. If I open a terminal in an nx session as root.I can't do a normal restart (shutdown -r now). Nothing happens presumably it can't run the init script because it is still running. The only way I have found to get the system back to life is to run "shutdown -r -n now" in the nx terminal session. There are probably better ways out of this predicament that I am unaware of. Otherwise it is probably somewhere between an annoyance and a bug. I would be interested in any advice the centos "board" may have as to whether this is worth raising as a redhat bug.

OpenSUSE :: Ctrl+z And Ctrl+c Do Not Work Without A Third Keystroke

Feb 3, 2010

I just spent a few days ripping out all the broken/buggy apps that are in the opensuse 11.2 official repos so I can finally get working software(openoffice, thunderbird, wine, eclipse, rubygems, rails, and a few others required getting the "official" versions from their respective websites to avoid strange behavior and outright broken functionality).

All of which makes updating more annoying and time-consuming. Why are opensuse packages so different anyway? Anyway, the last thing that I have noticed to fix is Konsole. For some really bizarre reason ctrl+z and ctrl+c do not work without a third keystroke: enter.Maybe this is something new with the KDE team, since they seem bent on making simple things that already work more complex, but given my experience with crappy packages in the suse repos, I am thinking this is the problem. I have looked over all the config settings that I can find and nothing fixes this affront to productivity.

Ubuntu Installation :: Mythbuntu System Hangs After Regular System Update: "out Of Memory" Errors

Aug 4, 2010

I have Mythbuntu 10.04 installed on an exclusive HTPC and working great... until tonight. After letting the system update some packages (161 packages if I remember right), I suddenly have an issue where the graphical system won't start. After researching I found three error messages that might be causing that.

1. At the start of splash screen I see "UUID=xxxxxxxCD7 not ready yet or not present" I checked in /etc/fstab and found that this is the swap partition. I don't remember seeing this before so this could be the culprit.

2. I'm not at the computer in question right now but I saw a Plymouth error about "mountall" and then the message "plymouth command failed". Not sure if this could be the main error.

3. after a while (usually ca. 1-2 min) I receive thousands of errors of the kind "out of memory"... "kill process XXXX" (process vary wildly e.g. dbus-daemon, mysql, etc)... "process killed"..."respawning"

After error 3, I'm not able to switch to graphical console (ctrl-alt-F7). If I was in the graphical console at this moment, I simply can't switch to the CLI console. I'm always afraid of updating my system since I've seen lots of things breaking afterwards (usually the proprietary graphic drivers) but this is really strange.

Ubuntu :: System Hangs For 15-20 Seconds After Login

May 1, 2010

Just installed Lucid Lynx on my Desktop and after logging in I would get a 15-20 second pause before Gnome appeared. I found many many potential solutions for this problem on the Internet but none solved it. Finally figured out that it was due to the system seeing a floppy controller when I have no floppy drive. I was led to this conclusion by the following two lines in my syslog (System > Administration > Log FIle Viewer > Syslog).

May 1 18:27:04 Desk-Ubuntu kernel: [ 34.636665] end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
May 1 18:27:16 Desk-Ubuntu kernel: [ 46.813441] end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0

Note the 12 second delay when it tries to read again.

So if you are getting the pause and seeing the same thing your system log then ...

Enter your BIOS and disable the floppy drive Use sudo and edit /etc/fstab commenting out the line with fd0 in it

Hope I can save someone else the headache of hunting through the Interwebs and finding 5 different solutions none of which worked. Learning as I go with Ubuntu so I didn't even know how to carry out most of the "solutions" which required more googling. I am migrating from FreeBSD due to application requirements
