I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 on a desktop. I then did the system updates and on the reboot the system now hangs at the splash screen before the login screen. I only get a blinking cursor on the text-based terminals. I don't see the grub menu, I assume because Ubuntu is the only OS on this machine. So I can't boot to single user or text-only mode.

Up until 2.6.33.x my system boots fine, but with this update the boot stops at the moment that the mouse cursor should become visible. To resolve the problem, I've gone back to 2.6.33.x and removed the 2.6.34 kernel but I wonder what happens with the next kernel update.
Anyone else having this problem?
I have Mythbuntu 10.04 installed on an exclusive HTPC and working great... until tonight. After letting the system update some packages (161 packages if I remember right), I suddenly have an issue where the graphical system won't start. After researching I found three error messages that might be causing that.
1. At the start of splash screen I see "UUID=xxxxxxxCD7 not ready yet or not present" I checked in /etc/fstab and found that this is the swap partition. I don't remember seeing this before so this could be the culprit.
2. I'm not at the computer in question right now but I saw a Plymouth error about "mountall" and then the message "plymouth command failed". Not sure if this could be the main error.
3. after a while (usually ca. 1-2 min) I receive thousands of errors of the kind "out of memory"... "kill process XXXX" (process vary wildly e.g. dbus-daemon, mysql, etc)... "process killed"..."respawning"
After error 3, I'm not able to switch to graphical console (ctrl-alt-F7). If I was in the graphical console at this moment, I simply can't switch to the CLI console. I'm always afraid of updating my system since I've seen lots of things breaking afterwards (usually the proprietary graphic drivers) but this is really strange.
My GRUB is at v1.5 and have just updated UBUNTU to 11.04 from 10.10 I have a AMD processor and am using the 64 bit version of UBUNTU

After my most recent update, the boot sequence hangs at:"a start job is running for Create Volatile files and directories" with a timer and no limit .. I let it go for 12 minutes, but nothing.It seems as long as this sequence remains, the boot process does not finish and just hangs here.I haven't been able to find anything specific to this. I currently cannot boot into this machine, though do have access to files via dual boot.
View 8 Replies View RelatedThe most recent kernel update, to version 2.6.38-11 has been a horror. It hangs on boot up. Sometimes I can get to the log in screen, then it hangs there as well. However, after 3-5 reboots (which is absolutely annoying to do when I just want to use my computer), it sometimes loads up finally. However, if I go to older Linux version in the Grub menu, then I can select 2.6.38-10 and it runs just fine.
So I am looking for a way to fix this problem, whether it be removing the most recent kernel update, or making 2.6.38-10 boot up by default. I noticed that the kernels are listed in the synaptic package manager, but I am afraid to remove the most recent one via synaptic. Is it as simple as removing the Linux version and headers I don't want, or are there other things I need to do in order to make 2.6.38-10 my default kernel at start-up?
Have had a clean perfectly working copy of 2.6.31.6-166 for months and after two updates to 2.6.31.12-174.2.3 and 2.6.31.12-174.2.19, neither of the newer kernel versions will allow machine to boot properly. Start-up hangs at the preload daemon with a flickering screen. To use machine, must use grub chooser and choose the original base kernel.
Running on Tyan h2000m board, opteron 2356, Nvidia 9800 GTX+ and 12GB of dram with SELinux security enabled.

I dismissed this as a random error and proceeded to hard-reboot the computer. It now will not boot at all. After multiple attempts, every time the boot process hangs on "Starting GNOME display manager gdm3." I even left it there for 2 hours while I was gone to see if it would get past the hang. It did not, and was still stopped at that same line when I got back. get my system back. I have a live CD available to perform maintenance if anyone has an idea of what's wrong.

So my Ubuntu 9.10 install has been hanging on boot lately. At first I thought it was a problem with the 2.6.31-20 kernel, because that is the default boot option in GRUB2. It seemed things worked fine if I instead chose the 2.6.31-19 kernel, but I had that hang yesterday too.I also had 2.6.31-20 boot just fine yesterday. Once. Next time I tried it - system hang.
What I mean by "hang" is,I would see the GRUB OS selection screen (I have 2 versions of Windows and 2 versions of Ubuntu on this machine),select the first choice (Ubuntu with the 2.6.31-20 kernel),see the "pulsating white Ubuntu logo" briefly,then a bunch of scrolling text, then...blank screen.Then nothing.I let it sit for a few minutes to a few hours when it did this, but nothing further happened.Then yesterday, I decided to let it sit the whole time I was at work, approximately 9 hours.I came home to a screen with the white Ubuntu logo and the following error message:

So it looks like I have a disk partition that refuses to mount sometimes.Gparted for some reason wouldn't tell me the UUIDs of swap partitions.They also don't show up in /dev/disk/by-uuid. Using the bootinfo script, I found out that 3fba81a3-de14-4f56-9e7b-ace95d933a0e is the 4 GB swap partition associated with my Ubuntu 9.10 install.The disk that partition is on is rated "healthy" by Disk Utility, with only a few bad sectors. The HDD is about 7 years old, so it's in remarkably good shape.What could cause this swap partition to not mount during boot, and how do I fix it?

I had to resize the win partition, making a new partition for Ubuntu of about 15GB. I then installed the system. Everything went without problems. I was able to boot once, and verified that everything worked as intented.
However, after that, 90% of the times I reboot the bootup process hangs at a blank screen (with a blinking underscore), immediately after grub selection. If I select "recovery mode" in grub I can see the bootup messages, but the process hangs, all except one time, right after:

The rare times that the system does boot normally, everything works normally. I've tried installing using both the ext4 and ext3 filesystems. I couldn't find anything like this on the forums. Am I doing something wrong? Do you need more details?
In the last few weeks I upgraded my Ubuntu from 8.04 to 8.10 to 9.04. No problems, everything went well. But yesterday I tried to upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. Everything seemed to go OK until the upgrade was finished and I had to reboot. After the reboot, no Ubuntu anymore... I get GRUB, but when I continue to boot the latest kernel, I don't see any harddisk activity anymore after about 2 seconds.
Here on the forums I read that one should run the boot_info_script when having boot problems, so I already did. I booted the system with a 8.04 live USB stick. And here is the result of the boot_info_script:

I've just upgraded to Natty. During the upgrade no errors showed. However, when I now boot ubuntu (either recovery mode or normal), the boot process hangs at:

I searched for similair problems in this forum, but the solutions in other posts(sudo apt-get update & upgrade etc.) did not help. I'm not sure if it is related or important, but when it hangs, it also shows something like:

It boots up into kde 4.3.5 and then right when its just finishing it freezes everytime and I hear that last tone of the bootup sound ring continually until I force a shutdown. Anyone else have this issue with the update?

after yesterdays update my machine hangs at boot. I get the splash screen, and I hear the sound drivers loading because of the crack on my speakers. But then, screen flickers (guess when X Server is loading) and eventually it drops to text mode and you cant do anything after that. The last thing thats written is:

Ran the updater, went to boot to Win7 to use Photoshop and realized that the grub menu was gone. Ubuntu boots by default now. I've tried numerous kernel choices at boot with no joy, the recovery console boots so far (to initramfs prompt) but I cannot access my disk to get data off of it, or at least I don't know how too.
How can I access my disc and what options do I have for getting up and running again, been using Ubuntu for over 18 months now and have enjoyed using it but now its not working i've not got a clue, currently running off of a live disc, it won't allow me to access my driver either strangely? If I was running windows, I would of just re-installed over the top and not lost any data, can I do similar with the live disc.
I installed Lucid Beta a few days ago and was happy with the way everything worked. The system wanted an update on Thursday night, I installed it and then carried on using it for about an hour, it was then shutdown normally with no errors. On Friday morning it would not boot. I pressed the "on" button it came on, all the other lamps lit ie Caps and Num Lock, the battery light is on anyway, but the hard drive light is not flashing, it's as though it isn't being accessed, but I can hear it? There is no display on the screen. I'm running an Acer Aspire One. My initial thoughts are bios related, but I can't see how that would have changed, then I think maybe the Harddrive is knackered.
