I am trying to install Ubuntu on my Dell Optiplex GX60 and am getting a black screen with white letters of errors and other stuff.
For instance.bad_area_nosemaphore+0x90/0x130
do_page_fault+0x378/0x440
error_code+0x73/0x78
etc.
I tried to update my main computer from Ubuntu 10.0 to 11.04. I wish I could remember what it said, but it crashed during the update. The lights on the keyboard were flashing on and off as well. When I try to boot, all I get is a black screen and flashing lights. The Ubuntu recover also has the same thing. I am going to try a fresh install. For some reason I am leaning to the power manager, but I am no where near sure.

And I want to be able to pipe it to sort on that third column, by letter first, then number. But I keep coming getting files sorted like:
(field separations all start at same place, so columns are not jagged like above.)
I have read the sort man pages, and have tried -n for the numbers, and -k for the position to start sorting, among other things. I also tried inputting a second position to start sorting, which sort should supposedly refer to if the two entries are identical at the first place being compared, but it seems to just ignore the second one. I just can't get it to sort the numbers properly...
For now I am manually opening the file in emacs and changing them around, needless to say, very time consuming.
I am trying to strip the numbers from the 5th columns and just get letters - in perl - i tried using subsrt, chop. and a regex -
what i want to get is:

This message comes with a black screen and then no key stroke works and everything totally freezes. then I've to force restart using power switch. This message appears when I'm using internet. I'm using pppoe broadband connection. Without internet it works fine. I'm getting the same prob in Linux Mint 9. I've googled for this problem and almost everywhere it is said that this message appears in booting time and after a few moments everything becomes quite ok but my problem doesn't match with them. I don't get this message in booting time. I get this message when I'm on internet.
i have tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 but everytime i try i get a black screen when the system starts up. i have tried to install via cd and the upgrade option.I am currently using Ubuntu 10.04 and this has no problems.I have also tried the esc key when i insert the disc and this brings the option to install but after this i get a black screen again.

- the system boots,
- the grub menu appears,
- the splash screen comes up and then
- I have a black screen and that's it!
I saw, at the end of the installation process, that the driver for the nVidia video card was removed.
I was messing around with the screen orientation and thought it would be funny to orient it sideways. Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora.This is my main computer.

If I will go to console CTRL+ALT+FX, screen is black too. I will go to console only in single-mode and I tried run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, but without results. View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running ubuntu 10.4, windows 7, and I had ubuntu 10.10 on a single hard drive. I upgrade the 10.10 system to 11.4 and now my grub menu which is on the 10.4 system shows two windows and two 11.4 installations.
How can I clean this up? Also I have tried to start with the grub 1.99 on the 11.4 system and all I get is a black screen at startup. I am happy with grub on 10.4 except for the extra lines.

I downloaded OpenSUSE today hoping I could install it on my aging computer, a Pentium 3 1.3GHz, 512MB RAM and a 3dfx Voodoo 5500. When booting into the live CD, I cannot get it to go to the installation. After the GRUB screen (Or whatever is used) to choose install, I just get a black screen. Is 3dfx not supported by OpenSUSE?

I just installed ubuntu on to a brand new samsung N310 series netbook, I opted for ext4 as I figure it should be stable, but awhile ago the laptop shut off with no visible reason, when I restarted I noticed that this is happening. What gives?

Recently I faced a problem in typing in English in OpenSuse 11.3.When I try to type in English it shows me Greek letter and worse than that I think it is really Greek (not only in font) because when I enter my passwords or try to type a command in terminal I get error,I tested with UK and USA and all other English languages and I still have this problem. I even do reset in my keyboard layout setting and in KDE setting but it didn't help.

View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter installing lots of stuff from the main repo (letters Q though U). I, apon starting to catalog the missing software that V-Z needed (and I did not have) I found that open office would not print letters on the screen. I tried rebooting (the computer)and reinstalling (open office is what I reinsalled) and nothing worked. I then tried to type on to a txt document using Kwrite and it wored at first then it started to type symbols and a pop up on the lower left showed the symbols then ABC etc. I clicked on ABC and Kwrite worked but open office did not. If it helps I installed some program that had to do whith typing python. I need to know the following
1:Is it a bug or my mistake?
2:How do I get open office up and running?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI cut paste sys folder, tmp folder, and many more folder to a backup storage place , after that folder icon and other icon converted into txt icon , i can make any folder but can't access, can't open storage, thrash disappear, terminal icon disappear, and also the application and places and system icons, after that someone suggested restarting may help but i can't restart it , so i unplugged the power wire and replugged it and restarted the system but it can't open , all things comes fail, and show INIT: "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes. after each 5 mins this msg is repeating
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently downloaded and installed Fedora 11 Alpha. I then installed the Nvidia drivers for my Graphics card (GeForce 7800 GTX). I discovered that Fedora 11 is using a Beta version of Xorg and an incompatible ABI. So, my drivers would not work with Fedora 11 without me dowgrading the Xorg server. I decided to reinstall Fedora 10 instead.
I started the install, and when the installation loaded the generic video drivers, my screen showed only a bunch of colored vertical lines. Fedora 10 doesn't allow me to install in text mode.
