I am trying to install Ubuntu on my Dell Optiplex GX60 and am getting a black screen with white letters of errors and other stuff.
For instance.bad_area_nosemaphore+0x90/0x130
do_page_fault+0x378/0x440
error_code+0x73/0x78
etc.
Now, after restarting my ubuntu, I couldnot boot back into ubuntu.
After reaching the boot menu and choosing the "Ubuntu 9.10, kernel 2.6.31-22-generic" option, I get a new black screen with these in white letters

My next door neighbor has a dell Optiplex gx270 and wanted Ubuntu installing.
Hardware:
1gb RAM
P4 2.4
Intel 82865g Onboard Graphics.
40gb HDD
I tried the live cd and it froze on bootup, so I thought it might not be enough ram as the case sticker said 512mb ram. So I booted the minimum install cd and installed ubuntu desktop on it and then rebooted, when it boots i get grub and then screen will either do 1 of 2 things.
1. I get another flashing cursor in top left corner and then cursor stops flashing and then nothing happens at all.
2. Then screen will go black and nothing will show at all.
I have tried updating the BIOS, adding i915.modeset=0 to grub, didn't work either. Also couldn't find the xorg.conf under /etc/X11 to change driver to vesa. After several reboots atleast 30 since the check disk think showed and then it froze again. it booted correctly so I tried the latest intel driver from xorg edgers ppa. Rebooted and still the same thing happens. tried 2 different installs now and get same results. I have had to put winxp on it so he can atleast use it, but this will run out in 30 days unless he decides to buy it.
After succesfully installing Ubuntu 10.4 x32 and rebooting pc hangs on black screen with a flashing white dot in the top left corner of my screen, i've tried installing it twice with the same results.
my setup is: Asus p5q-e,
4 gig of corsair dual ram,
ati 4850 graphics,
onboard audio.
ahci mode
win 7 installed on intel ssd, and xp on a samsung 320 gb sata 2,
i had this configuration running fine for 2 months without boot loaders,
on pc start up i choose from which hdd to boot from.
i installed ubuntu on the samsung drive where it was recognised fine, wiped it all and installed automatically.
pls let me know if there is anything i missed, and advice if possible in what to do.

I 've recently installed UNR 10.04 Lucid Lynx in my old PC.
Specs:
CPU Intel Pentium 4 2.66 GHz
Mother ASRock P4i45GV R5.0
Chipset Intel 845GV w/ Intel Extreme Graphics (shared memory up to 64 / 256 MB -I don't really get which one-).
Nevertheless, when I start the Pc, Ubuntu loads and, when it's about to load the desktop, the screen turns black with white stripes and "turns itself on and off" (like when it receives no image). I don't really know if this is or not a graphic bug / problem, but it's quite strange, as I've used Ubuntu 8.10 and 9.10 before in that same Pc.
By the way, I get the same error with the normal Ubuntu Lucid. AND, I have a Win XP Professional SP2 installed (I've installed the Ubuntu afterwards, so I have the Grub as default bootloader).
Also, I get the same error when loading Ubuntu in LiveCD mode.
I've just installed 12 new Dell Optiplex 960 computers with Dell 2009W monitors. They are identical hardware and OS installs. Some of them are exhibiting a weird problem with their screens: They boot up and run just fine, but then the monitor goes black for 2 or 3 seconds, and comes back, with the small DVI icon popping up in the upper left corner to show which video connection is active. This repeats at random intervals continously; sometimes just a few seconds between, and sometimes many minutes.
The problem initially happened on just one machine so I had Dell swap the motherboard thinking it was a hardware issue. That did not fix it. Soon after that, I got reports from several users of the same problem on other of the new machines.
I've done a very basic install of CentOS 5.5, skipping all of my local configuration management stuff, and it still happens. Then I installed Ubuntu 10.04 and over the last few hours the machine has been rock solid. No video issues at all.

I have just bought a Dell Optiplex 960 with a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 450. Everything works out of the box with the 10.04.1 Live CD. It suggests to install and activate NVIDIA proprietary drivers, but you need to restart the machine afterwards.The problem is that, after that, all what you get is a blank screen, with not even a cursor.The same happens when you install Lucid: blank screen with no cursor.
Ctrl+F1 does not show anything, but Ctrl+Alt+Prnt Scrn+REISUB works and the PC is reset.In the var directory the logs show that the NVIDIA module is not loaded.
I have ubuntu on my desktop - works great. The problem is I am trying to install it on my laptop. I have the image burned, and it's booting off my cd rom just fine. The problem comes after that. It goes to the ubuntu loading screen for a pretty long time, then after that the screen scrambles in random black and white box type things, at which point I get no response unless I hit the power button at which point a linux screen pops up and tells me it's waiting for programs to close, then boots down.
View 5 Replies View Relatedi thought i would give ubuntu 10.04 a try. So i downloaded the iso twice from two differant sources and burned to 2 diff dvd with diff burners and get the same problem. When i boot off of the disk i get the menu but whether i choose install are run live cd it just sits there for a sec are 2 then goes to black screen with flashing white bar in upper left hand corner and thats all it does. even tried my 9.10 disc which i know works. but it does the exact same. I have purchased a new video card since i last ran ubuntu and its the nvidia gtx 260 core 216. would that be whats causing my problems?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI get past the count down. The bars run across the top. Then my lcd monitor announces it has no signal and goes to sleep. Had this problem with earlier versions of Ubuntu, particularly 8.04. Was fixed in 8.10.

I'm running an Acer 1810Tz, dual boot with win7.Under 9.10 and Grub I had no boot issues, however I have just completed the upgrade to 10.04 and upgraded GRUB to GRUB2.Everything boots just fine into Ubuntu, and my GRUB menu looks right, but when I select the Windows 7 option, the machine just hangs with a black screen, white cursor top left. I'm sure this is a trivial problem, something overwritten that shouldn't have been perhaps, but I have no clue where to start.

Although I managed fairly quickly to get 3D enabled on the GF 7600GS of my desktop, it took me longer to get 3D up on the GF 9650M GT of my Asus laptop M70Vn. Although I made extensive use of the numerous procedures outlined here, none of them worked and booting my laptop always ended up with me facing a jet-black screen and a completely inexpressive blinking white cursor. My solution was simple: I did not blacklist Nouveau and problems mysteriously disappeared.

I'm pretty new to ubuntu, but after a bit of looking around at graphics issues I found a bunch of boot parameters and tried different combinations of them. i915.modeset=0 Gave me the purple loading screen, until the screen went black and I got flashing caps lock and scroll lock lights.xforcevesa gave me a completely black screen -- not receiving power at all

I'm a Dell Optiplex 380 MT Workstation user which have a Intel HDA Integrated sound controller. I was using Ubuntu 9.10 32 Bits Karmic, and all works fine, but, two days ago I did a fresh install to Ubuntu 10.4 LTS 32 Bits Lucid. In Ubuntu 9.10 I didn't do nothing to make work all features of my workstation, but, in 10.4 LTS the sound don't work. The hardware appear in "Speaker Icon" and in the alsamixer menu, but nothing works. It's happens in the Live CD, Installation in Hard Disc, 32 Bits Version and 64 Bits version.
Here is the output of the command, in Ubuntu 9.10 & Ubuntu 10.4. The only difference that I see is the follow in lspci (bold text):

I'm currently stuck at the "lubuntu - Install lubuntu" screen on a Dell Optiplex GX150 (specs; Pentium III 1 GHz, 512 mb RAM, 20 GB HDD). I can hear the CD spinning up but nothing happens. Looking at the specs, the PC should be able to run lubuntu, right? Could somebody point me in the right direction? I've verified both the ISO and the CD checksum, both check out, so there should be no issue with the install media
View 1 Replies View RelatedHas anyone got Ubuntu 10.04 working on their Dell Inspiron 1100? Most of the time, the screen goes black a short time after boot. Sometimes it goes black right after the splash screen, sometimes I get to log in and then it goes black a little later. Same results when trying to boot into "safe graphics" mode. Ubuntu 7.10 works fine on this machine (although I had to do some special configuration in xorg.conf to get it to work way back when I installed it.) However, it does not appear to be possible to manually configure X in 10.04. I tried disabling the splash screen in grub based on suggestions I found for other Ubuntu versions, but that had no effect on the problem.
Is it possible to replace X with the most recent version that could still be manually configured? Would anyone know how to go about doing that?
Alternatively, if it's impossible to get this old machine to run new versions of Ubuntu, has anyone had success with (relatively) new versions of other distros on it?
When attempting to install FC12 x86_64 on a Dell Optiplex 760, my USB devices stop working after initial boot. I see anaconda, but am unable to change anything since my keyboard, mouse and any other USB devices are not powering up after kernel boot.
View 13 Replies View RelatedI have 10.04 installed in a dual boot system with windows 7 pro on 1 desktops and one laptop. Also dual boot on a desktop with windows xp and Ubuntu 10.04. The two desktops run AMD processors and the laptop uses an Intel processor. On the two desktops after booting the screen will fade to black and white and then back to color. While in the black and white the computer is frozen. This happens using Firefox mainly and other programs. It never happens using my laptop with the intel processor. Does Ubuntu 10.04 have a problem with AMD processors? It does it so much it is hard to do anything with the and desktop computers, but I have never seen it happen on my intel laptop.

Does anyone know if there this is a HardDrive failure or is it something else that I can try to fix? I have back ups of all critical data so a reinstall is possible but I would like to get some noncritical data out on my XP partition.
I insert my DVD into my machine. The little "waddya wanna do" window then opens, and I select "play in VLC." I then press the play option on the video menu (not the play button on the VLC controls). Then the VLC window turns black, or the part where the video is supposed to appear does, anyway. So double-clicking to get to fullscreen sometimes fixes the problem, but then I can only view it in fullscreen, not good. It didn't fix the problem this time, so I double-clicked again to get out of fullscreen. Then my whole display turns black and white. WTH? The display problem fixes on a reboot.
This happens on a regular basis when I try to play movies. My display is, right now, black and white. After I finish this post I'll restart my computer to fix the colors.Also, it should be helpful that when I move the VLC window or am going to/from fullscreen, I can see the movie for a split second, and in full color. The rest of the screen stays B & W, though.Also, for some reason, when I play a movie, VLC open two windows: one with the video, and the other with a visualization and a title bar saying "VLC (X11 output)"
I have Ubuntu Studio, Ubuntu and XP in 2 HDs. I upgraded Studio to 10.04 and XP doesn't start anymore. I upgraded Ubuntu with and error in the GRUB and then just Studio was booting...With $ sudo mount -t ext4 /dev/sda2 /mnt $ sudo grub-install --root-irectory=/mnt /dev/sda I recover Ubuntu boot... but not XP...at last I removed completely the GRUB2 in the Ubuntu and Studio synaptcs...Now I have all the same but with GRUB 1.97 Ubuntu starts ok, Studio starts after an error message something like: dev/ no such device. and after choosing xp in the list all that appears is a black screen with an white I will post down the sudo fdisk -l and sudo gedit /boot/grub/grub.cfg

So i do a drive to drive clone (witn both hd's deing connected to another machine). And it says its done and okay. But the second (cloned) machine doesnt boot. And have the black screen with the blinking white cursor in top left corner. I have already tried to do fdisk /mbr and also copying partition table from original to destination disk. Because i think it is logical that with a drive to drive clone it sould be copied. But i have a doubt in that somehow. Because why would it not boot if it was copied then
