Fedora Security :: Top Shows 3 Users In A Single-user Laptop?

Jun 20, 2010

I am running Fedora 13 - 64-bit variety and using KDE as the gui. No real issues asides from machine not exactly flying, but then this is a mere core 2 duo 1.6 with 2 gigs of ram, so not unexpected...

When I run top I see 3 users indicated - which worries me somewhat... I am the only user on this machine.

I come from a Debian / Ubuntu /Gentoo knowledge-base and this laptop is a fresh install, encrypted partitions, temp has own partition (encrypted too) and obviously the firewall is on, with ssh service turned off and ssh access removed in the firewall....

is this 3 users in top normal, or have i managed to be hacked in the 3 - 4 days since I started the install ? In all this time I have been sitting behind a router when on the net.

Am I looking at a fresh install, or are there valid reasons for the extra users?

I just ran "users" in terminal and I show up 3 times - I have only logged in once, through the GUI and no extra access routes

Security :: Centralize Users And Passwords And Also Create Controls For User Access To Some Equipment?

May 12, 2011

I'm planning to centralize users and passwords and also create controls for user access to some equipment, for example, Linux Servers, Switches, routers and firewalls. In case of failure of the link between the ACS and AD or equipment to the ACS, this device would use local username and password.

At the moment, my AD structure is a Microsoft, Cisco ACS servers and Linux Standalone. I wish that both linuxs servers and network equipment were authorized by Cisco ACS on the accounts that are in Microsoft AD.

The configuration of the Cisco ACS to use the AD is done and no problems, the network equipment is OK too, but am having difficulties configuring the server for this solution.

Fedora Security :: Why SSH Will Not Use Users RSA Key

Jul 14, 2009

I have a new server with Fedora 10. The root user can log in by SSH using an RSA key but for any other user the RSA key is ignored and a password required.Ultimately I wish to access an SVN server over SSH and would like to to have to keep entering a password. I have Googled this issue and found nothing. If I log on as root the /var/log/secure file shows that the key is accepted, for any other user no message is added and the password is requested.I have checked all the config files and as far as I can see they are all correct so I am at a complete loss as to why SSH will not use the users RSA key.

Fedora Security :: Reset The Root Password By Booting Into Single Usermode By Editing Grub

Apr 17, 2009

Being able to reset the root password by booting into single usermode by editing grub. This is a MAJOR flaw. I know it makes no real difference against internet bourne attacks, but even so I must say I found it shocking. The only way I've found to stop this is to encrypt the entire HDD, so noone could get into single user mode without first knowing the encryption key/password.

Fedora Security :: Preventing Gdm Shutdown While Users Logged In

Is there a way to password-protect the gdm shutdown function if people are logged in?

Ubuntu Installation :: GDM Shows No Users In Greeter (Maverick)

Jan 21, 2011

After today's update in Maverick, GDM showed no users in the greeter and so it was impossible to input any login info through the GUI, though Alt-F1 console worked. I re-installed GDM and a variety of other packages to no avail.

I found this same problem in an old OpenSUSE message: [URL]

Indeed, console-kit-daemon isn't running, and if I start it by hand and restart gdm, all is fine.

I also see the error message Error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ExecFailed: Failed to execute program /lib/dbus-1/dbus-daemon-launch-helper: Success#012

in the logs. I also get a similar popup after logging in. It says "You might not be able to connect to the Bluetooth network via this machine."

why console-kit-daemon would fail to start?

Security :: Users Subverting Security On Purpose / Kerberos Only Answer?

May 12, 2010

I have an environment with multiple projects that have a variety of government and commercial sponsors. We have been satisfied to this point with a netapp serving nfs/cifs and keeping a tight reign on nfs exports. Some of these projects have started asking us to provide access restricted sub-folders of the project space based on different groups that contain a user subset of the primary group.

We have a linux machine that serves as a version control front end to the netapp, mounting the project spaces via nfs. People are now mounting their project space via sshfs to this "front end" and sharing the root password of this sshfs client with everyone in their project, in turn creating a security hole to access the so called restricted sub-folders. I know all the obligatory responses referring to irresponsible user behavior but would like to see how others have addressed something like this where user behavior seems out of control.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 64-bit Shows 3.7GB Out Of 4GB RAM On Laptop With Dedicated Graphics?

Nov 10, 2010

I'm accustomed to Ubuntu showing 3.9GB out of 4GB on my desktop. That's completely ordinary and expected: The kernel uses a dozen megs or so, which are not accounted for in the reported memory totals. After truncating, that brings us to 3.9GB.

I was expecting to see the same thing on my Elitebook 8740w, but System Monitor is reporting only 3.7GB instead, using the same version of Ubuntu. free -m shows:

total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 3819 935 2883 0 80 287
-/+ buffers/cache: 567 3252
Swap: 4095 0 4095

That is to say, the total of 3819MB is not missing a mere dozen or so MB but a full 267MB from 4096MB! That's WAY too much to be accounted for by the kernel, so something else is going on!

Please note the following:BIOS shows the full 4GB, and so does lshw.

uname -a = Linux COMPNAME 2.6.35-22-generic #35-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 20:45:36 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
lspci | grep VGA = 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Broadway XT [Mobility Radeon HD 5800 Series]

That is to say, I really do have 4GB RAM, my mobo and BIOS recognize it, I really am running a 64-bit OS, and I really shouldn't have any kind of onboard graphics.

The devil lies in the details though: I SHOULDN'T have any kind of onboard graphics...but the best explanation I can come up with is that 256MB or so are being set aside for that purpose anyway. This is a mobile workstation with dedicated Firepro graphics (based on the Mobility Radeon HD 5800), and it's well beyond the range of laptops that include switchable graphics. However, it has an i5 processor, so I think it's conceivable that the laptop is being tricked into allocating RAM for integrated graphics. This is especially likely considering I get the same i915 error as the threadstarter here, and I have very similar command line output.

Presumed Problem: Long story short, I think Ubuntu is seeing the i5 processor and setting aside 256MB or so for the integrated graphics which it THINKS I have, which are actually totally unavailable to use on this particular laptop. If this is the case, does anyone know how to make it stop doing this, so I can make that memory accessible to the rest of the system?

Update: Interestingly, even Memtest is showing only 3952MB. This may or may not account for the full missing amount, but it obviously counts for a lot. I'm used to Memtest showing I think 4095MB on my desktop, meaning Memtest itself presumably only takes ~1MB. Actually, even on the laptop Memtest says only 1024KB are reserved, so 143MB are totally unaccounted for.
