Mar 24, 2011i have compiz-fusion install on my ubuntu and it has crashed. i was setting the transparency for the title bars of windows (trying to). suddenly compiz just crashed and now everything is transparent! i can only see docky and the menu bar on top. all windows and menus are 100% transparent. i am have a dual-boot with windows and am using it now. i also have ext2 reader installed, so i can access my files on ubuntu.

Feb 21, 2010I am experimenting with Xen with the standard kernel (kernel-xen package) and utilities. I already got bridged setup to work with a single domU, but found out that because of my wireless card I cannot expect bridging to work when connected wirelessly. Now I am trying a NAT setup but I cannot seem to get any network connection from the domU to the dom0 and viceversa. Comparing the network devices and routing tables of others, I cannot see any problem.
The domU runs with IP 10.0.0.1 and the dom0 has a vif with IP 10.0.0.128 with a default gateway of 10.0.0.254. Pinging from the domU to the dom0 and viceversa does not show any traffic at all when I use tcpdump to monitor eth0 in the domU or the vif interface in dom0. It seems that basic connectivity of the vif interface and eth0 in the domU does not work. Any tips on how to debug this problem?

OK, this can take 3 arguments that open ports 80, 443 and 52413. And at the end, some default rules are applied. But here's the thing I don't understand:
if I don't give the argument for port 80, I can still view web pages... and also, when I remove the line:

Ubuntu Servers :: LAN Setup - Basic File And Printer Sharing?
May 31, 2010I am trying to set up a LAN with some basic file and printer sharing, as well as either a VPN or FTP server. I am setting up a server for an office with about 4 computers and one remote computer at a home office. I would like the server to back up a selected group of folders on all of the computers as well as share some printers between them all as well. If all of the other computers are windows computers will Ubuntu work for something like this? I would also like to host a website and e-mail server as well if the server is not loaded down too much. I know I can get windows server to work, but I would like to use something else if possible.

Fedora :: Setup Desktop Effects With Compiz?
Jan 2, 2010When trying to set up desktop effects with Compiz I get this message: Accelerated 3D graphics is not available Desktop effects require hardware 3D support.
I have used Fedora 10 last year and the 3D effects worked fine. I have a Nvidia Geforce 6100 video. I also have another hdd on the PC with Mandriva 2010 which I use and the 3D compiz effects work fine. I'm running Omega 12. Isn't it Fedora 12 w/ codecs added? isn't video detection the same?

Nov 13, 2010I've installed yesterday Fedora 14, 64 bit... Now I wanted to setup the nice graphic effect, but I can't find a way how to setup the minimize effect. I've installed additionally Emerald, ccsm and fusion-icon. I'm starting compiz using Fusion-icon. Just in the ccsm menus and icons I really can't find anymore how to setup those nice things like the magic lamp or there was also an effect which makes the window fold on minimizing (or closing).
And where did the burn effect go? It used to be there at some point in the past? And for closing effects and I didn't find nothing at all? Is there another configuration tool, besides ccsm, do I need to edit some config files in order to setup these things, should I install something more or nowadays. Compiz is losing its effects? Why all the topics regarding graphic effects are only on Ubuntu? Let's write about Fedora too !!

Apr 19, 2011Naturally i don't want to harm my system but I would like I shutdown via the terminal. I understand there are shutdown poweroff and halt commands. Which is the safe one (like as if I just did it using the GUI) at the moment I am just using shutdown now and that seems to work fine, I just want to check that it's not harming my system and that this command does everything it needs to ie closes all programs and shuts everything down in a safe way.

May 12, 2010I using an old 1999 PC 512 MB RAM used to have W-2000. I had difficulties getting CD to be boot drive. I had to remove floppy drive to stop it from being the first drive. I'm using the Linux Starter Kit with Ubantu Live 9.10. My PC was having issues so I skipped the dual boot and went straight to a clean install. I had to double click on WUBI in the disk directory to get the install started. Install appeared to be going fine about 60%... then I got distracted to fix lunch for sick kid. When I came back screen was black and I could not wake up screen with mouse or keyboard. I turned off PC.. restarted and have message that says NO ROM BASIC System Halted.

data mounted on / data 140GB
Fdisk would have been a joke, but the box was setup via lvm, so I am learning on the fly. I was able to shrink the partition using;
lvreduce -L 30G /dev/mapper/server-root
vgcreate shows;
VG Size 169/76GiB
Alloc PE / Size 9453 / 36.93GiB
Free PE / Size 34005 / 132.83 GiB
Now, per my DBA, I need that 130 on a seperate 'partition' and I am not 100% sure on the next step. I am reading on vgcreate, lvcreate, etc.

Nov 10, 2010I had to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 after 9.04 stopped being supported and now I can't run Quicken 2000 Basic in WINE anymore when it ran just fine under 9.04 using WINE When I try to install it from the CD ROM it gives me this error The file '/media/QWINMMR1F/install.exe' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit. So I copied all the files from the Quicken CD to my hard drive and installed it from that folder and it completed installation without any installation errors but when I run Quicken and try to open the qdata.qdf file Quicken gives me a "can't open file" error.
I then removed WINE and installed the latest BETA Version now I can install from the CD but still get the "can't open file" error from Quicken. It worked fine under 9.04 and WINE and I could update the info in Ubuntu and it would show up under Windows and if I'd update in Windows it would show up under Linux. Now in Ubuntu 10.04 it does not work.

I found the driver (net8192su.inf) on the disk which came with the adopter and installed the driver using the GUI for ndsiwrapper. Unfortunately I get a message "invalid driver" after I installed it?

I've downloaded the tar.gz files from Mozilla and though I don't really want to get in the habit of it I'd like to do the hopefully simple compiling to get this running. Apr 25, 2011This is what I am trying to get for my dinosaur, Compaq Presario 5050. But I have never booted linux through floppy disks before, so I haven't a clue what I am doing.
In the read me from the site I linked above, it said they need to be 1.44 M and DOS formatted. Both are 144, and I went to my computer (in XP) and right clicked on the floppy, format, and create bootable DOS disk. But this fills the disk up with files, and even when I deleted them all, it said there was not enough room for one of the two files I am supposed to copy on to it.
So, how do I make the file fit onto the floppy, and how do I write the image file to one of the floppies? In DOS? I can use linux too, if necessary. (if it's easier)
This is another one I am looking at, but basic linux looks easier to install.

I got used to it for about a year, but for the most part I used the Ubuntu Software Center and Synaptic Package Manager to install software and learned to manage okay. Thing is, I have used the terminal, but I don't know any of the coding or commands to generally install software being straight up downloaded form the net.
