General :: How To Install Basic Applications In Ubuntu

Jul 4, 2010

I am planning to download/install latest Ubuntu Desktop version this week. How to install additional Applications in Ubuntu in case I will need some. BTW, the old HDD I will be using is pre-installed with Debian so I need to do a "Fresh_install". I know how to use RPM in RedHat but I think in Ubuntu its a different thing. Is there any particular website to download these additional Apps?

Ubuntu :: 90% Of The Applications Install - Last Release - Do Not Show Up Later On In Applications Menu

Jul 24, 2010

I feel shy asking this question but, 90% of the applications I install in Ubuntu (last release), do not show up later on in the applications menu, so I cant run them. I know it seems silly, but I can't find the way to handle this inconvenience. Is there a place (like Start> All programs in Windows), were I could find and run all the programs I install?

Applications :: Automated Install Of 30 Applications Across Multiple Distributions?

Jun 15, 2010

I'm setting up a large number of virtual machines, each with a basic set of about 30 applications. Obviously, I don't want to do everything manually so I'm looking for ways to automate this process. Multiple distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat Ent., FreeBSD, CentOS, etc.) will be used, meaning I will have a few Ubuntu installs with the basic set of 30 applications, and multiple Red Hat installs with the same set, etc. So, I'm looking for advice on automating as much of this as I can, even if it means a new form of automation for each distro.

Ubuntu :: Install - Basic - Onto 2 Floppy Disks ?

Apr 25, 2011

This is what I am trying to get for my dinosaur, Compaq Presario 5050. But I have never booted linux through floppy disks before, so I haven't a clue what I am doing.

In the read me from the site I linked above, it said they need to be 1.44 M and DOS formatted. Both are 144, and I went to my computer (in XP) and right clicked on the floppy, format, and create bootable DOS disk. But this fills the disk up with files, and even when I deleted them all, it said there was not enough room for one of the two files I am supposed to copy on to it.

So, how do I make the file fit onto the floppy, and how do I write the image file to one of the floppies? In DOS? I can use linux too, if necessary. (if it's easier)

This is another one I am looking at, but basic linux looks easier to install.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Basic Downloaded Software Install

May 16, 2011

I am currently trying to install Personal Brain on my Ubuntu 11.04 and I came to realise I am Linux retarded. I got used to it for about a year, but for the most part I used the Ubuntu Software Center and Synaptic Package Manager to install software and learned to manage okay. Thing is, I have used the terminal, but I don't know any of the coding or commands to generally install software being straight up downloaded form the net.

General :: How To Install The Applications

Mar 25, 2010

I downloaded and created a LiveCD using PCLinuxOS 2009.I decided I wanted to devote a machine to Linux so I could do more. I installed PCLinuxOS on one of my systems. Great. everything seems to be working pretty good. again, surprised and curious. Lets install some apps and really get the ball rolling... How on God's green earth do you install applications on Linux? You have to jump through hoops and travel to application managers, command line scripting and all sorts of other mess just to install a program? Is it really that much different that a simple install or setup file cannot be created that the end user clicks on? I'm struggling with the concept that entire programs can be written in open source code but an installation routine is beyond the scope of the developers.

OpenSUSE Install :: Hangs At 'loading Basic Drivers'?

Dec 21, 2010

I got a new ASUS EeePC 1015PEM with Windows 7 with the intention to install OpenSuse 11.3 onto it for having a dual booting netbook with enough disk space.I'm installing from an external DVD drive, the checksums of the ISO were ok as well. However, the OpenSuse installer fails at starting up after selecting the action. It hangs, no matter what menu entry I chose, at "loading basic drivers", forever.Because this isn't necessarily an unknown problem I've tried some of the predefined kernel options of the main installer menu. Then I tried some manually entered kernel boot options that helped me in some other installations:

acpi=off, apm=off, CPUFreq=noNone of them seem to have an effect on the installers behaviorI hope that there is people who managed to solve this problem with an actual EeePC model... because I really don't know what I could any more. It's kind of frustrating to not even get past the kernel launch I haven't tried any other distros installation discs, but I don't even intend to. I want OpenSuse because I'm running it on our firms machines as well and don't like shifting between systems.

General :: Basic Security Practices For Desktop Ubuntu - Use A Limited Account

Apr 30, 2010

Most of us know the basic security practices on Windows:

Use a limited account
Set a password
Disable unused services
Uninstall bloatware
Antivirus / Antimalware
etc.

I haven't ran linux as my main desktop computer before, so I don't know how to properly secure it. I have heard linux is supposed to be more secure than Windows, but I know that the default settings of anything are rarely secure. What are some things I should do as a new Linux user to secure my desktop system from attack?

General :: Ubuntu - Cannot Execute Basic Commands (ps, Ls, Ifconfig) - File Not Found

May 4, 2011

When I try execute a variety of basic commands (including ps, ls, ifconfig, locate), I receive the error 'no such file or directory'.

Here are some suggestions that I've found online, that I have tried without success: I did a 'whereis ps' and found the file in the /bin/, and have checked that '/bin' appears when I do 'echo $PATH' I did a filesystem check which showed my hard drive as being clean I tried doing a 'sudo chmod 777 ps' but was told that I dont have permission. I don't think permissions for these files would have changed though (and I can't check as I can't run the 'ls' command).

General :: Lack Basic Understanding Of Permissions (Apache)

Apr 8, 2010

I am very new to linux. The first time i ran a linux machine was one Saturday. Anyway I am trying to set up an apache web server, all I want to do is play around with html and post it on my unbuntu server so it is available to the internet. I am also trying to install samba but I am having trouble with that so for now I am using winscp. Ok, so I made a folder in my home directory for webstuff, and set up apache to look in that folder.

mkdir /home/username/webstuff
I put my index.html file into the /webstuff folder.
But when I go to my website, it says 403 error unable to access "/"

Did I make the folder in the right place? I do not want people being able to access my / folder so maby I made the web stuff folder in the wrong place? Also I thought I would just put my inded.html file inside of the default one apache gives you, but when I tried to transfer index.html it said permission denied. How to set up permissions so I can use apache and transfer my html files from my remote desktop to my server would be great!
