Jun 27, 2010this might be a simple question. I would like to, from the terminal, see what users are on a network and what their IP addresses are.

View 2 RepliesI am currently tinkering with my SMB configuration in my home server. My purpose is to enable users in the network to view, browse and edit files I decided to share. However, I would like them to do just plain old connect and open the folders without the server asking them for a username and password.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI remember back when I used Windows, there was a shell command call "net view", which would allow me to see all the other users on my wireless net.
Is there any command or application that can do this? I dont mind if it is a terminal command either, but I would really like to know a way that I could see other users on my network.
I want to find out ip addresses and also mac addressed of users connected to the same wifi router as me! how can I do that?
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe question is related to one single desktop machine, with 3 users.
1) the superuser (me)
2) My elder son
3) My younger son.
As superuser, I can access the network (internet router) via "Wicd" perfectly well.
Both Client users can't.
Do I have to give them special user priviledges? If yes, which ones?
I want to upload some files via ftp and after that to access them via http (i have apache2 installed and configured properly) I can't use a ftp with system users because they are located in home.. it should be something with virtual users but the problem with be the file permissions.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just added my wife as a seperate user on my desktop and have a question about shared network folders. So /etc/fstab mounts network folders from a second computer and until today I've mounted them to /home/David/NetworkData
This of course means that when my wife logs in she won't see them since they're not mounted to her home folder. So what folder should I use and what tricks so that we both have it visible and accessible in Places from the top menu?
Have a strange problem with the network icon on my laptop.
I have two users (me & my wife). We often log in and use switch users so we're both logged in at the same time.
Whoever logs in first will get the network manager icon in the top panel, and whoever logs in second won't get the icon.
The second user does get a message (growl notification?) saying the wireless network <whatever> is now connected & it is indeed connected.
It's a bit annoying, as if I log in second, I can't chnage my wireless network to the other one we have, I'm stuck using whichever one my wife selected.
I need to setup a box to monitor what websites users are accessing on a small network.I don't have a switch with a spam port, but I do have a machine with two nic cards. I would like to set it up between the router and cable modem so that users won't know it is there but it logs all the websites that are being accessed.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using openSUSE 11.2 with active directory for authentication. I configured it using the Window Domain Membership YaST2 module and I can login successfully (although unreliably). The problem is that I need the UID and GID of the users on my computer to match the UID and GID assigned by Active Directory. Currently it just assigns UIDs and GIDs starting at 10000, which is completely different than the UID and GID used by Active Directory and by other Linux computer runs by the school (those use CentOS). Does anyone know how to get my openSUSE computer to assign UIDs and GIDs from Active Directory?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI would like to experiment a "green" idea of virtual desktop where multiple users are served by a single powerful machine.
I have a server running 24/7. The monitor of this machine is turned off most of the time and the OS is on the login screen.
Other users, in the same local network, use less powerful machines, which could be a thin client or an old Pentium 3 machine. They access their accounts remotely and work with the GUI as if they were sitting in front of the server. Each user sees their own desktop (different themes, screen resolution, etc.). And of course it can happen that several users could log in at the same time.
The usage is modest: mostly web browsing and the usual default applications (office, wine, gimp, etc.). In particular no games or any demanding applications. The users want to use their desktop in graphical mode only.
Question: How do we call this way of using a server? Is it possible with Ubuntu? And how to implement it?
I have an issue with network-manager. When I edit my wireless settings and enable 'Allow all users' (I have a german locale so I don't know the exact words but I guess it's close enough) the connection drops and doesn't reconnect. If I click on the wlan access point manually (in the nm-applet) it asks for my WPA pass. This is odd since it was already in the wlan settings.
Then when I reset the 'Allow ...' to off, I'm asked for my su passwd and the connection is re-established. Ideally the nm would connect automatically at boot if the AP is available so I'm not happy with the current state...
I have a firewall/router box running openSUSE 11.2 between the outside world and the LAN. This router also provides DNS for the LAN and has SuSEfirewall enabled. LAN users need (almost) full access to the internet. However, I want to block certain sites which are not required for work (you name it: facebook is my candidate). What is the most elegant way to block certain sites (which have quite a lot of different IP numbers) ?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed ldap on my server and one of my client machines yesterday. It also now won't let me get into graphical utilities that require root privileges; synaptic for example. It comes back with "incorrect password". I noticed that in the terminal it now requires me to enter two passwords to become root: the root password and the ldap password. I wonder if the two are related.I'm not sure what information to post; there's a ton of configuration files associated with this setup. Can somebody help me troubleshoot this? Thanks!

If I want to add Windows & Mac users as Samba users, must I first add them all as Ubuntu users? If so, since none of the other users will actually be working on the Ubuntu Server, how do I disable the other non-admin users on the Ubuntu Server login screen. I am using Webmin to administer some server settings, and command line for others.
