Nov 22, 2010
is there any solution for authentication of ethernet users.something similar to daloradius for wifi.I dont want to use pppoe. is there any way to connect daloradius with dhcp server, so when certain mac address asks for IP first daloradius will look if it is allowed.

To avoid having to input a password for the keyring each time I connect to the net via wireless, I enabled the 'Available to all users' option in Network Manager. Now, my question is this. Are the 'users' it refers to just those created on this machine? Would a drive-by be able to use my network without entering the password?

I installed a few media servers to stream something to my PS3 over the weekend, but now when trying to shutdown the computer, I'm asked to authenticate with a password since other users are still logged in. I installed quite a few programs over the weekend trying to get it to work, so I can't remove a specific one. Is there a way to see which daemons are logged in under a different session? Found it. It turned out to be mythtv.

I use Ubuntu in my office NIS environment and I can't upgrade the whole network to LDAP right. I upgraded to 10.04 recently and reinstalled the NIS client and associated packages, among other things.
I have set up my /etc/nsswitch.conf file so that passwd, group and shadow all have "files nis", I'm bound to the correct NIS domain and I can do "ypcat -k passwd" or "ypcat -k hosts" just fine.
Problem is that I can't log on or su to any NIS user, I just get "authentication failure". I've tried the same usernames and passwords on Red Hat NIS clients on the same domain and they work fine.

is it possible to authenticate users logins by a database (postgres, mysql)?for instance: -user types username, pasword, at login screen -OS then connects to server with database and checks if the user is valid. if so, is it feasible to add a time lock function for each user? in the sql, postgres table ? for instance user sandra can only log onto the computer for 1hr at 5pm

I've got a Samba server (CentOS)(I swear all my non-work boxes are Ubuntu) that has been working fine in our Active Directory environment for a long time, now that Windows 7 has been forced upon us, we've noticed that Win 7 users aren't able to authenticate to this server unless they access it using the IP address, e.g. \192.168.1.22. We've tried the different Windows 7 registry hacks and nothing makes a difference. We were advised to update Samba and we did to 3.3.8. However, this being a virtual machine, upgrading a clone of this machine did work, the configuration was identical, except the hostname

I am wondering how websites like banks are able to determine if you have previously used a certain computer to access the website, even if your router's IP address may have changed and your system's cookies have been cleared. I have users that need to access our HTTP intranet from outside locations. Those locations will have dynamic IP addresses most of the time, so I can't just "allow from [ip]" in my Apache proxy configuration. Originally we considered a VPN, but determined that a VPN will be overkill to access just an internal website, since we do not want external users to have permission to the rest of the network, only the website.I currently have it working over HTTPS with basic authentication against an internal LDAP server, but I want a little more security for such an important website.
crappy diagram:
[user]-->(internet via https)-->[apache gateway]-->(intranet)-->[http server]

fedora 10 and im trying to set up some user accounts on a computer. My current problem is that we set up 2 root accounts and we need both to be able to authenticate. So far this works on the command line but whenever i'm on the GUI it seems that it only allows root to give its password for things. How do i enable the second account to do that as well.as a note, i am doing this for someone else so i have little to no control how this is set up, so please, i am not looking for reasons why this is not a good idea i would just like to figure this out

I have some important cgi files run on top of Apache inside cgi-bin directory. My requirement is to once user try to access the cgi file authenticate using Active Directory username/password. If user enter the correct domain credentials only user aloow access to the page in any time user trying to access otherwise not. I configured this using htaccess and htpasswd. But in this case I need to manually configure username/password for htpasswd file. Instead of this I want to authenticate with the Active Directory.

I am trying to use a guest account in Ubuntu 10.10 however I am unable to stop the guest account from authenticating as a superuser and gaining root permissions dispite removing all permissions from the user-group control panel. The new guest account I created is not part of the admin group. However, with my new guest account I am unable to start a guest session from the panel, AND if I use the guest session from the panel I dont have the problem with the guest session being able to authenticate. How do I prevent super user authentication from an account in this situation? It seems that any account can authenticate and my /etc/sudoers file looks like this:
# /etc/sudoers
#
# This file MUST be edited with the 'visudo' command as root.
#
# See the man page for details on how to write a sudoers file.
#
Defaults env_reset
# Host alias specification
# User alias specification
# Cmnd alias specification
# User privilege specification
root ALL=(ALL) ALL
# Allow members of group sudo to execute any command
# (Note that later entries override this, so you might need to move
# it further down)
%sudo ALL=(ALL) ALL
#
#includedir /etc/sudoers.d
# Members of the admin group may gain root privileges
%admin ALL=(ALL) ALL

We are trying to set up a classroom training environment where our SIG can hold classes for prospective converts from Microsoft/Mac. The ten machines will have /home/student01..10 and /home/linsig01..10 as users. We want /home/student01 to be able to explore and sudo so they can learn to administer their personal machines at home. We don't want them to be able to modify (sudo) /home/linsig01. I've seen the tutorial on Access Control Lists but I'd like other input so we get it right the first time.

i need to find a way to securely authenticate a decryption mechanism of some sort where the authentication is provided remotely without any user-interaction. Right now i have a number of boxes that all inform a central server when they are online. When they do this an OpenVPN connection is set up between them and the server.
However, i have been given the task to ensure that the scripts involved in this process are encrypted by default. This requires some form of self-decryption, which to my mind kind of goes against the whole idea of encryption/authentication in the first place. I need some way to leave decrypted the bare essentials required to boot a box and securely connect to the central server automatically. Then the server would automatically send a key/passphrase and the rest of the files on the box would then be decrypted on the fly.

I have a TP-Link Atheros-based USB card: TL-WN422G. It's listed widely as being compatible, but I'm baffled if I can make it work.I'm running an ndiswrapper (XP-64) driver, and that seems to be loaded and recognizing the hardware correctly. The system can scan and correctly identify our network, and other nearby ones, but when the WPA key is entered (correctly, I've triple checked), the "Secrets" windows just keeps popping up and no IP is acquired. I've installed and tried toi configure it with wpa-supplicant, all to no avail.ched below a (long, sorry) list of various outputs that I've looked at

I have an environment with multiple projects that have a variety of government and commercial sponsors. We have been satisfied to this point with a netapp serving nfs/cifs and keeping a tight reign on nfs exports. Some of these projects have started asking us to provide access restricted sub-folders of the project space based on different groups that contain a user subset of the primary group.
We have a linux machine that serves as a version control front end to the netapp, mounting the project spaces via nfs. People are now mounting their project space via sshfs to this "front end" and sharing the root password of this sshfs client with everyone in their project, in turn creating a security hole to access the so called restricted sub-folders. I know all the obligatory responses referring to irresponsible user behavior but would like to see how others have addressed something like this where user behavior seems out of control.

I have a system running a very basic LTS install (10.04). Ubuntu has been setup with very little additional packages. No GUI. Once it's booted to a prompt for the first time I add the following packages,
cups cupsys ssh pi memtester nfs-common
aptitude safe-upgrade
At this time I don't have additional information on exactly what packages are installed. I did not perform the installs myself. I will update this thread when I get more details from my IT counterpart on how the system was setup.
This is used for a headless(no monitor, no keyboard) system running some custom applications.
Here are two problems.
1. If I plug into an ethernet network after I boot, the network never connects. I need to reboot with the network connected in order to get an IP. What is the service to "auto connect" to a network?
2. I have a network printer configured on lpd called myprinter. If I am connected to the network when I boot, I can print to this printer just fine using:
Code:
However, If I boot disconnected from the network and print to myprinter, the jobs obviously cannot print. They get spooled. Using 'lpstat -t' I can see that the spooled print jobs are assigned a job number and that myprinter is trying to connect. I shutdown, reconnect my ethernet network and boot up. All my printer configuration is blown away.
/etc/cups/printers.conf has been wiped out to look like this:
Code:
My 'good' printer configuration is copied to printers.conf.O
To recover from this, I need to stop cups, copy printers.conf.O to printers.conf, restart cups, and re-setup my network printer.
So, What causes my printers to get wiped out? I've repeated this on 4 systems with the same setup.

I'm on opensuse 11.4 (11.3 won't work with my monitor).
My computer gets internet through wireless and I want to share that internet through its ethernet port. So far I've tried using Knetworkmanager to create a network bridge between my wireless and wired connections. I created a new wired connection and shared it using the ip address settings. I was able to get both connections active, but the device hooked up via ethernet had no internet connectivity.
I also tried this command:
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
but another test resulted in the same fashion (no internet on wired). I believe anything I add to /proc should have an immediate effect, correct?

I often use an Ethernet cable to connect my computer to another computer for various purposes. But when I do that, I cannot use the internet even though I'm still connected to a WiFi access point. I'm presuming that's because openSUSE is trying to reach the internet through the Ethernet cable, which has precedence over WiFi.Is there a way to enable internet usage via WiFi while I'm connected to another computer over Ethernet?
