OpenSUSE Network :: Lock A Certain Website For Internal Users?

Aug 4, 2010

I have a firewall/router box running openSUSE 11.2 between the outside world and the LAN. This router also provides DNS for the LAN and has SuSEfirewall enabled. LAN users need (almost) full access to the internet. However, I want to block certain sites which are not required for work (you name it: facebook is my candidate). What is the most elegant way to block certain sites (which have quite a lot of different IP numbers) ?

OpenSUSE Network :: Some Website's CSS/images Won't Load?

Feb 2, 2009

Ever since switching to openSUSE 11.1, I have been having problems with certain websites (using the version of Firefox that came with openSUSE 11.1). Some website's CSS code won't load until repeated reloads - for example, wachovia.com. I'll visit the website and it will be all distorted because the stylesheets did not load, and I will have to refresh a number of times before it becomes usable. Other website's images won't load until multiple refreshes, like facebook.

Is this an openSUSE issue? An openSUSE interaction with Firefox issue? I've never had this problem on XP or Ubuntu.

Networking :: Redirect Marked Packets To Internal Website?

Dec 17, 2010

I found this really cool guide / info about creating an internet portal where users have to register (their MAC) with the server to use the internet. basically if users MAC's are in the list they get routed to the internet if not they get routed to an internal page asking them to register. It works great and works well. I was wondering if there are some smart people out there who could help me reverse the process.. eg if your mac is not in the list you can access the internet if it is, you are redirected to an internal page saying "youve been blocked"

The firewall rules are as follows.
Code: IPTABLES=/sbin/iptables
# Create internet chain
# This is used to authenticate users who have already signed up
$IPTABLES -N internet -t nat
# First send all traffic via newly created internet chain

OpenSUSE Network :: SSH Working For External But Not Internal?

Jan 14, 2010

I have a SuSE server (sorry but no idea what version of SuSe it's running.. I'd take a guess at 10.0) on a network with several other SuSE servers. They are all able to be SSHed externally as well as internally and all have their local firewalls disabled. I just had to reboot one of the servers and it is behaving quite strangely. I am able to SSH in and out of it externally, but can't SSH in and out of it internally.

When trying to SSH out internally I get the message:
"ssh: connect to host *.*.*.* port 22: No route to host"
When trying to SSH in internally I get the message:
"ssh: connect to host *.*.*.* port 22: Connection timed out"
Using ssh -v doesn't give any more useful information.

I have double checked that the IP is correct and that the internal firewall is disabled etc. The external firewall hasn't got anything that would prevent it (and shouldn't be an issue anyway as it's an internal only problem... SSH externally works fine). Also, it might help to know that I have the same problem with ping. I can ping this server from an external system, but not from an internal one.

Ubuntu Servers :: Associate Internal ISS With Website Hosted By Apache?

Apr 18, 2011

we have a dual server setup: Windows server 2003 and Ubuntu 10.04 with apache installed with all the goodies. This is all virtualized. What I'm wanting to do, is make the new website we've created run on the Ubuntu machine, which it is, and be accessible outside the office. However, by doing this, we forfeit being able to use remote access or web exchange on Windows server 2003.

How can I create a link from the new website on Apache point to the internal server and it work outside of the office?

I updated to 2.6.31.8 from Opensuse-11.2-update days ago and today it's my 1st time to try to connect to wifi with this new kernel.

Downgrade to 2.6.31.5 will solve this problem.

OpenSUSE Network :: KPPP Does Not Create Modem Lock File Under 11.3?

Oct 16, 2010

I migrated from 11.0 to a new install of 11.3. Under 11.0 I was using Kinternet for a dialup connection through an external USB modem.Kinternet isn't available under 11.3, so I installed KPPP but haven't been able to get it to work. The modem and provider has been configured through YaST.At first with KPPP there was an error with permissions as a user. One old thread discussed how to fix this through chmod, which was successful for me.Now there is the error message 'Unable to create modem lock file'.Under configuration, use lock file is checked.

OpenSUSE Network :: Accessing Server In Order To Modify Website?

Feb 27, 2011

I was saddled with the job of maintaining my department's website (I work at a college). When I still used windows I would access my department's folder on the web server using the following procedure: (in windows XP) go to the start menu > click 'run' > enter the folder address, I would be prompted for my login and password. The folder, and the whole server in fact, would then be visible in the windows file browser, under the 'networks' icon. I could then navigate to my department's folder and modify the files I need to to update the website.

How do I do this in Opensuse (using Gnome). I tried going to 'network' in nautilus and then 'open location' but no luck. I also tried 'connect to server' in nautilus (in the 'file' menu), but again no luck. which I could stomach if my college provided reliable access to computers on campus, but they don't so I have to use my laptop, which is now windows free . My current job is only going to last for a few more months, so having only so recently got rid of windows I am reluctant to re-install it just for this purpose (which is just about the only reason I currently have for using windows - the other is being able to download audiobooks from the public library, but that's another matter).

OpenSUSE Network :: OpenSSH Chroot Only Supports Internal-sftp?

Nov 16, 2009

Had my chroot jail all set up and working nicely in OpenSUSE 11.1, upgraded to OpenSUSE 11.2 and had to set:

Subsystem sftp internal-sftp
(which was:
Subsystem sftp /usr/lib64/ssh/sftp-server)
and:
ForceCommand internal-sftp

[Code]...

Of which with-pam is mandatory. I used prefix to put the binaries in a place that would not conflict with the standard distribution, this meant I also needed to change /etc/init.d/sshd so that it referenced the newly compiled version of sshd, and copy /etc/ssh/sshd_config to /opt/etc/sshd_config.

I set up a server that has dhcp going. This works 100% as I get ipaddresses. My question is how do these internal computers connect to the internet? There is a proxy that needs to be passed as well...

Is this just a simple case of portforwarding or is this a completely different thing?

Ubuntu :: Lock Down Gnome For Guest Users?

May 21, 2010

I am volunteering to set up a computer lab for a small private school on an extremely limited budget. I love Ubuntu for my home, and on my server at work, but have never used it in a school before. I would like to "lock down" all the control panels, pretty much everything except for a few applications (open office, firefox, and some educational games, of course). I don't want the students (who will be automatically logged in as guests) to be able to make changes, or unintentionally mess things up.

Alternatively, at the public school I work at, we use Windows (sigh) that has been "frozen" using a program called Deep Freeze (similar to windows "steady-state"), which causes any changes a user my make revert back to default when rebooted. Is there a Linux equivalent? That may work too!

Ubuntu Servers :: Using Groups To Lock Users Away From Filesystem?

Mar 31, 2010

I'm currently running a small server using 9.10 and I wondered if using groups was a possible route in order to keep users away from the bulk of the file system and keep them in locked their home directories.

What I planned to do is use a group named 'allowsystemfiles' to be added to admin accounts, then to set parts of the file system to that group, along with the permissions 0760 to keep non-admin users out.

Is is a good idea or will this hose my system?

The problem is that I need the UID and GID of the users on my computer to match the UID and GID assigned by Active Directory. Currently it just assigns UIDs and GIDs starting at 10000, which is completely different than the UID and GID used by Active Directory and by other Linux computer runs by the school (those use CentOS). Does anyone know how to get my openSUSE computer to assign UIDs and GIDs from Active Directory?
