Managed to get the desktop of the ubuntu 10.04 onto my windows xp workstation. But, I tried to run for example synaptic this way, but this seems not to be possible, think due to root rights needed. How to handle this? Is it possible to run synaptic via remote desktop and install programs?

I've installed two emulators, one for Nintendo 64 and GameBoy Advance, but I couldn't find the program after it installed. I have also installed NES emulator, but it could be found by searching its name in the Menu. I'm sure I haven't selected to only download the package and not install it.

I also have a desktop with no wireless or wired connection. My question is how do I transfer my apps from my laptop to my desktop in offline mode?
I don't want to install a wireless card for my desktop. Is there a way to install synaptic while offline? Or is there a way to install these apps from a flash drive to my desktop, if so how would I do that?
Whenever i goto Ubuntu Software Center and find a program there is no install button. In Synaptic I can only find programs that have been installed.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to setup my HTPC. I wanted to have the most minimal overhead possible so I installed Ubuntu 10.10 server from the mini.iso and just added the ssh option. I then used the following command to give me a desktop environment because I will want to run firefox and it apparently requires this to run.
Here is the command that I ran:apt-get install xorg gnome-core gdm gnome-applets gnome-system-tools gnome-utils ubuntu-artwork compiz-gnome firefox sysv-rc-conf.The desktop works fine and I can open fire fox, however, the remote desktop is missing from the preferences menu.How can I install this? I would like to add the remote desktop option from a command line.
For example you go to the synaptic and you delete some programs.And then you make a mistake you delete some another program which is tied to the system. If i go in terminaland i write sudo apt-get install --fix-missing will be installed back the program which was deleted by mistake?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just did a fresh install of Xubuntu 9.10 x86 in a 4 gig pendrive.Just one ext4 partition for / and /home and a swap partition. Only one user created during installation.Everything's fine so far except for two things:-If I launch synaptic from the start menu, it asks for my password which I type in or even copy-paste to be sure.Strangely it always comes back saying incorrect password. If I open a terminal and call "sudo synaptic" and type in my password when prompted, the application shows up fine. Again if I do the same via the Run dialog (alt+F2), that is "sudo synaptic", nothing comes up. If I just type "synaptic", a pop up says that as a user I won't be able to install anything and blah-blah, and the application displays properly
View 4 Replies View RelatedIf you do a search on the web you can find where to download Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection 7 client (rdp client). To get it to work under Wine (I used Crossover Office) actually was pretty simple. You will need to copy four files from an existing Windows 7 system. Two of them, mstc.exe and mstscax.dll are located in the C:WINDOWSsystem32 directory. The other two files, mstsc.exe.mui and mstscax.dll.mui, are located in a subdirectory within C:WINDOWSsystem32.
The name of the subdirectory will depend on the language and locale of the Windows system you are using. If your language is English and you are in the USA, they will be located in C:WINDOWSsystem32en-us. Copy those 4 files to some temporary directory on your Linux system. Next create a new Wine Windows XP "bottle". Use either Crossover or Wine to browse to the SAME wine C: drive subdirectories as on the Win7 PC (see above) and copy the respective files into each subdirectory in your Wine Bottle. Two files each into 2 different directories.
Next using either Crossover or Wine execute the RDC 7 application.

In Crossover you can just click the button the RUN a COMMAND and just enter "mstsc.exe". The RDC login screen should appear prompting for a Server address and a login ID. You can also change various other "options". I have not tested alot but it does seem to work pretty well so far.
To connect to a windows server. I used yum to doanload and install rdesktop. The application installed but there is no icon on my centos desktop.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI maintain plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 systems for several friends. Each machine has only one user, the owner. I use Remote Desktop to instruct and to perform maintenance. Here's my problem:After updating the system, if the kernel has changed, a restart is needed. If I do a restart, I then have to phone the owner to insert his login credentials in the gdm login screen, before I can do anything else via Remote Desktop on that machine.There ought to be a simple way I can avoid the phone call and login myself.

I'm working on getting my myth box hooked up to my Sony flat panel display.Originally the nvidia drivers could not read the EID, so defaulted to only 640x480 over my HDMI-DVI connection.I manually updated xorg.conf with a mode for the resolution I know the thing can handle. Suddenly there are several resolutions avaialble in nvidia-settings and it seems to be communicating with the TV, as it is now listed as a Sony FP display rather than a CRT.I'm able to change the resolution now as expected.my problem, however, lies with the TV itself. I can't seem to get it to actually display the output. I'm able to remote desktop into the box and can see Gnome logged in and everything.However nothing on the TV itself.How do I troubleshoot this? Am I missing something obvious?

The machines are side by side The Ubuntu box is hardwired to my network router, and the XP machine is connected via wireless. Both get to the internet fine, and I can ping the Ubuntu box from the XP box. But, I cannot ping the XP box from the Ubuntu box, and Remote Desktop Viewer won't establish a connection to the VNC server I have running on the XP box.

In any case, I'm basically trying to run programs remotely at work (from home) that will run for a long time. I first ssh into the appropriate network, then ssh into the individual machine. This works great and I can run programs no problem. The issue is that these programs can run for days or weeks, and the network kicks me out after some period of time due to inactivity.
Is there a way to start a program on a remote machine then terminate the connection but have it keep running?
I am using 2 PCs, both running ubuntu. I want to connect via remote desktop (vnc, ssh -X, etc) form one to the other. However, what the solutions I found until now offer me, is the possibility to create a new desktop session and view that one (or run an application an view that one). I have an application running on the server, and I want to see that application, without needing to restart it or running it again in a new desktop. Is this possible?

The problem is that if I logon from computer 1 and open some programs, I don't see these programs when I logon from computer 2.I logon with the same user, so I find this strange. View 1 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit today and I installed Adobe Air with no problems. I then installed the Pandora Desktop application and that installed fine as well. After the installation I saw a "do not enter" style sign in my status bar on the desktop. When I hover over it it's telling me an application has a broken installation. When I go into Synaptic and filter for broken I see "com.pandora.desktop.fb9956fd96e03239939108614098a d95535ee674.1" is showing broken. The description is just <> <>. Both Adobe Air and Pandora are working fine, and I'd be happy to ignore this warning except it's going to break my updating because it throws a warning every time.
Does anyone know how I can see what is apparently broken with the install or how I can suppress this message? I had the same versions of software running on 10.04 just fine before I formatted, and I'm the only person on the internet with this problem so far.I've gone over dependencies several time and don't see anything missing. I've tried reinstalling both apps several times. I don't know why this is even showing in Synaptic, since it's a sub app of Air...
I don't know how, but on my 64 bit machine I installed this 32 bit deb file: kobo-desktop.deb. I did that while using Ubuntu 10.04. Now I've updated to 10.10, and I can't uninstall it. Searching for "kobo" in Synaptic or USC only gives me a game, and using apt-get I get this error (I've included some output from the last command I run so you can see that my system does recognize that kobo-desktop is ins fact installed):

When I execute Eclipse or Firefox remotely using ssh (on a LAN using ssh -Y user@remote-machine eclipse) they both look strange, the colors are kind of yellow. Logging in to the remote machine using NX or VNC and executing the same apps does not produce the same colors, the apps look fine. Executing the same apps on my local machine does not produce the strange colors either.The remote machine is a SLES 11 and the local is a openSUSE 11.3 (with KDE 4.5.2).This might seem like a small problem but it is annoying to work a whole day like this when the remote apps looks like **** on my otherwise beautiful KDE desktop

I have it bridged so it gets a valid IP from my router and such and is in my network. I use KRDC to remote desktop to it and I make it full screen. However if I want to go back to my desktop I have to minimize KRDC.
Is there a RPD client out there I can use so I can go full screen on 1 desktop and have everything else on another desktop then use KDE's Desktop switcher or ctrl+alt+arrow keys to switch between desktops to flip between Windows XP and Linux without having to minimize?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been using Linux on a more regular basis for the last two months now and have been able to find replacements for most of the software i use in Windows, or by using Wine. But i have one big problem that is keeping me from switching permanently to Linux. I frequently use remote control software to access and control my computers, both at home and to access my computers from remote places over the internet. I've been using NetOp, and more recently RealVNC. The client, or "viewer" part of RealVNC is working fine in both Windows and Linux. It's the host or server part that i can't get to work properly when it comes to VNC. The vnc.so module doesn't work on my system, x0vncserver program seems rather useless since it refuses to load before i have a network connection and this prevents me from start the program automatically as the wireless connection isn't ready and the vncserver command isn't an option since it doesn't display what i see on the actual screen. So, does anyone have a nice solution to this problem? Either to make VNC work or suggest some software that does. Anyway, it has to work on both Windows and Linux, in Linux it has to display the native x display, there must be built-in encryption and preferably be free or open-source software. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10.

How do you open a program, in this instance "Zenmap", from the desktop in a user account when it requires root privileges? Is there a way to be prompted for the password, the same way, for instance, you're prompted when mounting a new file system or making a change to the system? I tried entering 'sudo /usr/bin/zenmap' when creating the shortcut, however that didn't work.
