I have set up a server running ubuntu desktop, and I'm able to logon through remote desktop (win 7). The problem is that if I logon from computer 1 and open some programs, I don't see these programs when I logon from computer 2.I logon with the same user, so I find this strange. Is there some setting I have missed to be able to see the same from any computer (logon through remote desktop).
View 5 RepliesI maintain plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 systems for several friends. Each machine has only one user, the owner. I use Remote Desktop to instruct and to perform maintenance. Here's my problem:After updating the system, if the kernel has changed, a restart is needed. If I do a restart, I then have to phone the owner to insert his login credentials in the gdm login screen, before I can do anything else via Remote Desktop on that machine.There ought to be a simple way I can avoid the phone call and login myself.
I'd strongly prefer not to use any software that is not included in a plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 installation. And I don't want to weaken system security beyond what it is now.Is there a solution? Or, what is the simplest solution?
I have my work PC in the office, and time to time I access it via TeamViewer from home. I have access to it also via ssh, over the VPN connection. I have problems with this setup, when for some reason the work PC must be rebooted (or it just happened by itself - power failure). The Ubuntu gets to the login screen and that's it. I can not access it remotely because the TeamViewer application is not started on that PC yet. I'd like to know, if there is a way how I can access my work PC over the VPN connection - open SSH session, and write some commands, to log in that desktop environment user, and launch the TeamViewer application. Ie, if someone would be looking on the screen at that moment, she would see that login screen disappears, desktop environment is loaded, and the TeamViewer app is started.
If that's not possible, then, I guess, I'll have resort to some alternative remote access tool (ie, VNC) what could be loaded before the Ubuntu login screen is shown. Then I could access it over the VPN connection, using appropriate client.
I have a PC running Ubuntu 10.04 with vino to share the desktop. After I login to the PC I can connect to it from another PC (again 10.04) with the vinagre Remote Desktop Viewer. Canonical has made this rather easy to configure. However, I cannot connect to the remote PC and use the Desktop Viewer to login to the remote PC.
Short of ripping out vino and installing vnc or tightvnc is there a way to configure Ubuntu's desktop sharing to allow me to connect to the remote PC and then login?

I'm running a ubuntu lab, and adding an rdesktop launcer to the login screen would really make login much easier for the users, so they don't have to login twice. First into lucid and then into windows with rdesktop.
I'v already made the rdesktop launcher on the lucid desktop, but where (if possible) do I put it so it will also be avalible in the lucid login screen ?
I'm working on getting my myth box hooked up to my Sony flat panel display.Originally the nvidia drivers could not read the EID, so defaulted to only 640x480 over my HDMI-DVI connection.I manually updated xorg.conf with a mode for the resolution I know the thing can handle. Suddenly there are several resolutions avaialble in nvidia-settings and it seems to be communicating with the TV, as it is now listed as a Sony FP display rather than a CRT.I'm able to change the resolution now as expected.my problem, however, lies with the TV itself. I can't seem to get it to actually display the output. I'm able to remote desktop into the box and can see Gnome logged in and everything.However nothing on the TV itself.How do I troubleshoot this? Am I missing something obvious?

The machines are side by side The Ubuntu box is hardwired to my network router, and the XP machine is connected via wireless. Both get to the internet fine, and I can ping the Ubuntu box from the XP box. But, I cannot ping the XP box from the Ubuntu box, and Remote Desktop Viewer won't establish a connection to the VNC server I have running on the XP box.

I then used the following command to give me a desktop environment because I will want to run firefox and it apparently requires this to run.

I have it bridged so it gets a valid IP from my router and such and is in my network. I use KRDC to remote desktop to it and I make it full screen. However if I want to go back to my desktop I have to minimize KRDC.
Is there a RPD client out there I can use so I can go full screen on 1 desktop and have everything else on another desktop then use KDE's Desktop switcher or ctrl+alt+arrow keys to switch between desktops to flip between Windows XP and Linux without having to minimize?

Others can access your computer using the address 127.0.0.1 or tabatha.local." I understand this means only the loopback ip address is available. All my other machines show their true local ip address (e.g., 192.168.1.104) in this dialog. Thus I cannot log on to this desktop from other machines.
When I try to do a remote logon from another Ubuntu 9.10 box (or from an XP box using a VNC viewer), I get: "Connection to 192.168.1.102 has been closed." What steps are needed to make this machine show its actual ip address? All file sharing between the various machines is working properly and all windows shares back and forth between XP and 'nix, and among the the vaious XP boxes and linux boxes are available as designed.

I tried installing Kubuntu 10.10 yesterday and when I booted into the desktop it wouldn't show anything but blurriness and lines. It was completely unusable. It showed that on the live cd too. I then tried install Elementary OS. It installed and had the same result. I've checked with the Configuration Editor, and that shows it to be disabled. However, every, single time my mouse slips up to the top left corner, it activates. Not only that, when it does it, all of my screenlets Go Away, and the only way to get them back is to restart them. how to tell Compiz that I Really Mean It when I say that I don't want it to show the desktop?

I used to use the ubuntu's remote desktop program to work remotely from home on my office box, but since I installed 10.04 it remotes in ok but nothing gets changed on the screen when I click.
