Ubuntu Networking :: Running Remote Programs For A Long Time?

Mar 14, 2010

I suspect this has been posted before, but I'm new enough to the OS to lack the proper vocab for a proper search.

In any case, I'm basically trying to run programs remotely at work (from home) that will run for a long time. I first ssh into the appropriate network, then ssh into the individual machine. This works great and I can run programs no problem. The issue is that these programs can run for days or weeks, and the network kicks me out after some period of time due to inactivity.

Is there a way to start a program on a remote machine then terminate the connection but have it keep running?

Ubuntu :: Taking A Long Time To Start Up Programs?

Jan 3, 2011

I don't know if it is just me but it seems like Ubuntu takes a long time to start up programs. For example, it takes me 10 seconds to start up "Ubuntu software center". My computer is a relatively fast one. It has 4 gb of ram and an intel core duo processor. I didn't install that many programs. Does anyone know what might be the source of the problem and how to fix it?

CentOS 5 Server :: Vsftpd - Takes Long Time To Login From Remote Host

Aug 19, 2009

I've setup vsftpd correctly and it's running fine with local users (in the same LAN). However, when remote users wanna login to the server, it takes more than 1 minute to get in. Users do can login from remote. It just took too long. (It prompted for the username and password very fast.) Since the server is behind a router, I did configure the port forwarding for TCP 20-21. The centos version is 5.3. The vsftpd is v2.0.5.

Ubuntu :: Running Postinst Hook Script /usr/sbin/update-grub Taking A Long Time?

Running first upgrade after installing 9.10.

Currently on item "Configuring linux-image-2.6.31-20-generic" and the progress bar/terminal readout has not changed for an hour or so I'd say.

Don't want to cause issues by killing it halfway through, especially as it presents an opportunity to learn something!

CentOS 5 :: X/Gnome Takes Long Time To Load And Sudo Takes Long Time To Execute

Oct 13, 2009

I am running Centos 5.3. I ran no updates, performed no installs, nor changed any configuration immediately prior to this issue. My problem is this: when I run the command startx (default runlevel 3), it is a long time (5-10 minutes) before Gnome startx, and once it does start applications will not run. Also, when I try to use sudo (from any environment, even ssh), it is a long time (5-10) before the command is executed.

I cannot say for sure, but it seems like this is an intermittent problem. Sometimes X takes a long time to start, but once it starts it will launch programs. Sometimes X takes a long time to launch, but once it starts it will only launch certain programs. Though presently X always takes a long time to start, and I cannot successfully launch any programs.

A while back a had a similar problem to this (x taking long time to start, sudo taking long time to execute) and it ended up being a DNS problem. Unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly what it was and I stupidly did not document it. Maybe this is also DNS related, I don't know.

I don't know what log files to look at for problems with X, Gnome, and sudo taking a long time to start.

Ubuntu Networking :: USB Adapter Takes A Very Long Time To Connect Then Disconnected

Aug 6, 2011

I currently have a Nexxt Lynx 150 Wireless USB adapter attatched to one of my home destops to recieve my wifi signal, however, i have run into a speed bump in terms of getting it connected to my ubuntu 11.04. This adapter works perfectly in windows and on the ubuntu live cd, but, when i install ubuntu to my hard drive and try to connect to my network,

it just takes a very long time, then says, disconnected. My signal is WPA2-Personal protected. Here is a link to the adapter's home page > [URL] It seems to me that this is a driver problem. The cd that my adapter came with has drivers for linux on it, but i havent the slightest clue how to use them.

Ubuntu :: After Log In Takes Long Time To Show Desktop, Monitor Events At Log In Time?

May 24, 2011

It takes me a while to log in the splash screen just sits there for ages before i get to the desktop. Never used to be this slow and I'm not sure why. Firstly, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, standard DE. I do have conky starting up in a script but it has the & at the end of the line so I didn't think this would cause it (or is there some special case for log in time on how & is treated?). However as a test I will comment out the line in the script and see if it is the cause.

However just for general knowledge and in case that isn't the problem, how does one go seeing what is happening during the time from when one log's in and the desktop is displayed? Is there some kind of log that shows the date/time that can be enabled or is there a debug mode that can be enabled somehow via special keys or maybe from grub?

When I type "firefox", however, it starts the copy of firefox that is on the local machine. On the remote machine, "ps aux|grep firefox" confirms that firefox is not running there. Fedora :: Fortran Programs And Long Path Names Input's

Apr 30, 2010

I have a fortran program example call like this:

This call cant run my fortran program because they output to the screen that the file ' ' (empty) cant be loaded!

So the problem is that my program cant see the file in the long path name above ( the real name is a bit more longer). I try with shorts path names , and the program can run, reading the input file.

I googleit for this type of error and only found that bash have limits on the filenames and inputs, so i change them (/usr/local/linux/limits.h or some like) to a very high value (999) ,but no success.

Networking :: Allow Remote Access To Server Running On User Account?

Jul 11, 2010

In the past, I've installed Internet services as daemons and as xinetd.d with no problems. Those approaches do not meet my needs. And, perhaps, nothing will.

- the service was converted from VB-6 to wxPython. It has a GUI which is accessed with either "remote desktop" or VNC.
- the wxPython service works on Windows and can be accessed from other hosts on my LAN
- the wxPython service works on CentOS and Fedora, but can only be accessed from within the server host. Even from other user-ids. But, I cannot get to it from other hosts.
- ipchains AKA firewall ports are marked for INPUT.
- The server host uses autologin to fire up a useid in group "user". I do not want it running as "root". the .bash_profile fires the service up.
- the service is heavily mult-threaded, and supports devices connected to serial ports asynchronously with the ephemeral port threads (all this works).

There are some programming solutions that I would rather not develop.
- a proxy service that runs under xinetd.d.
- separate the GUI code from the Internet and serial port code. Allocate a "control" port for remote GUI control. a'la SAMBA & SWAT

Is there any hope, that I can run it as is, by doing some network configuration stuff.

Ubuntu :: Karmic Does Take Relatively Long Time To Load On 'slow' PC

Jan 29, 2010

I have been using Karmic as a tool to extract important data from Windows Operating Systems where say viruses have necessitated a complete reinstall. I run the Karmic install disk and use the 'try before installing'option. It works well and I am able to 'rescue' anything I want by saving to a USB drive.Problem is that Karmic does take a relatively long time to load on a 'slow' PC.Does anyone have any suggestions on a 'slimmed down' Ubuntu that could be used in the same way which will load up quickly ?In most circumstances all I want to do is mount the C Drive of the stuffed PC and copy files to an external USB drive.

If I issue "sudo service gdm start" it does come up promptly.

What can I do? Where can I see startup logs to try and identify any problems?

Networking :: Browser "waiting For ..." Stalling / Browser Seems To Stall For A Long Time?

Feb 7, 2011

I'm surfing along just fine when I select some link in my browser. The status line reports "... waiting for ..." and the browser seems to stall for a long time (minutes). Often, but not every time, I can select the STOP toolbar icon and reload the page. This time things work normally.

I have a similar but different malfunction running Evolution email connected to my hosted IMAP server. I select a message and see "... formatting ..." and then Evolution seems to stall for a long time (minutes). Rarely the stop-reload actions help reading email. Instead, all Evolution windows go dark grey and the entire desktop stalls.[Analysis -- It has the feel of a "network" issue provoking issues within Evolution itself rather than an Evolution-only malfunction.]

Watching the running system with 'htop' and similar, I do not see where some other application or service is sucking all of the available CPU time or such. [Analysis -- It has the feel that either the browser message or the email message were sent into limbo without reaching their intended destination. Stop-reload sends the bits to the right places and so I get results.]

It used not to be this way, before it took less than 10 seconds, but about 4 days ago this time shot up suddenly, is there some way to diagnose whats causing this delay?
