General :: Install Programs From Synaptic Offline?
Dec 16, 2010
I have a laptop on a wireless network in a apartment building, but the server is in the manager's office, the signal is real good. I also have a desktop with no wireless or wired connection. My question is how do I transfer my apps from my laptop to my desktop in offline mode?
I don't want to install a wireless card for my desktop. Is there a way to install synaptic while offline? Or is there a way to install these apps from a flash drive to my desktop, if so how would I do that?

I've installed two emulators, one for Nintendo 64 and GameBoy Advance, but I couldn't find the program after it installed. I have also installed NES emulator, but it could be found by searching its name in the Menu. I'm sure I haven't selected to only download the package and not install it.

Managed to get the desktop of the ubuntu 10.04 onto my windows xp workstation. But, I tried to run for example synaptic this way, but this seems not to be possible, think due to root rights needed. How to handle this? Is it possible to run synaptic via remote desktop and install programs?

For example you go to the synaptic and you delete some programs. And then you make a mistake you delete some another program which is tied to the system. If i go in terminaland i write sudo apt-get install --fix-missing will be installed back the program which was deleted by mistake?

I'm having a problem installing programs via synaptic. supposing I issue the command: sudo apt-get install <program> (and assuming the program is in the repositories), I get an error like follows:
I have no idea what this means, and googling has not turned up anything appreciably helpful. It does this for anything I try to install via synaptic, both the command line or gui versions.
The full error output is below:

I need to somehow do a yum installation (or equivalent of) on a system that is offline with no access to the internet. (I do have access to another Linux system that has internet access, but the Linux installations on both systems have different packages installed and enabled.)
Let's say the command to enter is 'yum install pkg1 pkg2 pkg3' (the documentation for some applications I need indicate the installation instructions this way, and not as the actual RPMs I need). Is there a way for me to run that on my offline system?
e.g. one way I can think of is to run that command on the online system, somehow if possible take note of what RPMs get installed, then transfer them to the offline system via USB and install all the RPMs via rpm command.
The problem with my above idea is that the two systems have different packages enabled, so even if yum on the online system shows a few dependencies being downloaded, I could run download and install all these RPMs and their dependencies on the offline system only to find several more missing dependencies, and dependencies of those dependencies.

I've just did a fresh install of Xubuntu 9.10 x86 in a 4 gig pendrive.Just one ext4 partition for / and /home and a swap partition. Only one user created during installation.Everything's fine so far except for two things:-If I launch synaptic from the start menu, it asks for my password which I type in or even copy-paste to be sure.Strangely it always comes back saying incorrect password. If I open a terminal and call "sudo synaptic" and type in my password when prompted, the application shows up fine. Again if I do the same via the Run dialog (alt+F2), that is "sudo synaptic", nothing comes up. If I just type "synaptic", a pop up says that as a user I won't be able to install anything and blah-blah, and the application displays properly

I have just installed ubuntu on my machine which doesn't have Internet. I can access the net on my laptop and copy any files over. I am wanting to install blueman to tether my iPhone. I cannot find a .deb of it, so downloaded the tar.gz but the stock install doesnt have a compiler. I could download and copy over a compiler, but I'm guessing I'm going to be here hours copying over each dependancy that I come across (I'm guessing there may be a few) how I can tether my iPhone or how I can install blueman? Does anyone know of any pre-built packages I can just copy n install?

I had installed ubuntu on my desktop. But I removed it and i've just installed Wifiway on my hard disk. But I used to install programs by the Synaptic on Ubuntu. But now on Wifiway, there isn't an install programs manager like Synaptic. Should I install all programs by source code, with ./configure, make and make install?

I am on Debian/Tor/Vidalia environment and I am thoroughly confused as to what the Apt-get engine does. To put it simply, I landed on Debian because I heard that Torrent-downloading stuff via an external application such as U Torrents does no longer guarantee anonymity, even with a Tor proxy server. So I got into the Amnesia CD stuff, after burning the ISO image on CD. I was hoping then to be able to install U Torrents on Debian and carry out the U Torrents downloads from within the Debian shield.
I did download U Torrents but I was unable to install it from the .exe file. Then I heard that programs can be installed in Debian only via a special APT-get engine. My understanding was that by running the" APT-get" engine in the CMD( Terminal) screen, I'd be able to access the softwares I wanted to install, such as U Torrents..
Unfortunately, when I run the " Apt-get" engine with the script " Apt-get Install + software name, " I get a " no packages found" answer. I searched for Bit Torrents, Azureus, U Torrents and a host of other common softwares, to no avail.. None is there. I even got to the APT-get.org site. THere I did find hundreds of repositories and packages , but I haven't the slightest clue as to what they contain. This database is not searchable by software name, so I don't know if and where my software is there.

I downloaded some rpm files from rpmfusion.org to my computer using my Windows Vista OS. I then moved the files to the partition where Fedora is installed. When I ran the files on the terminal using the rpm command, it showed a lot of errors like: xyz needs abc.. and so on. How then can I install softwares and codecs on my computer without being online? I don't have screenshots right now.

I downloaded and installed the newest version of Fedora, version 15, in my refurbished computer. It's the CD version; so much of the stuff are missing, including an office suite. I didn't have a DVD-ROM drive on the system, thus I installed the CD version. On the CD version, I was displeased that I can't install Samba offline; I had to download it. Don't ask me why I don't want to download it, it's just my preference to be able to have a basic computer function like Samba on an official distribution, like a calculator, an office suite (again, was left out), and a file manager.
Fedora's website describes the DVD edition of the operating system as having more software than the CD version. Now, for those who have used the new Fedora and also used Samba, does it come installed, or do you have to go online to download it? I understand if you don't want MP3s or DVD decryption software, but how does LAN file-sharing count as something that's illegal?
