View 2 Repliesim trying to install compiz (ive tried synaptic, apt-get and software center). However, whenever i then go to system -> preference -> appearance ->effects and select anything other than none, it seems to turn of metacity and give me this "Your window manager does not support the show desktop button, or you are not running a window manager." then i click the "no i don't want to keep these settings" and it goes back. The windows have borders with the buttons again. also after installing ccsm i start it from system -> preferences and nothing happens. it just loads a while then stops.

View 3 Replies View RelatedManaged to get the desktop of the ubuntu 10.04 onto my windows xp workstation. But, I tried to run for example synaptic this way, but this seems not to be possible, think due to root rights needed. How to handle this? Is it possible to run synaptic via remote desktop and install programs?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop on a wireless network in a apartment building, but the server is in the manager's office, the signal is real good. I also have a desktop with no wireless or wired connection. My question is how do I transfer my apps from my laptop to my desktop in offline mode?
I don't want to install a wireless card for my desktop. Is there a way to install synaptic while offline? Or is there a way to install these apps from a flash drive to my desktop, if so how would I do that?
I had a problem with synaptic package manager and Ubuntu software center when I upgraded to 11.04, two days ago. They simply would not work for me. There are a few fixes for this on the forums but, I think this one is the simplest and worked for me.
1- Pull up a terminal
2- Type the following command: sudo nautilus
You will be prompted for your password. After entering your password, you will have root access to files and folders.
3- Navigate to file system>var>lib>apt
inside the "apt" folder you will see a folder called "lists". Rename it to lists.bak
4- Close the file browser and terminal
5 - reopen terminal and type: sudo apt-get install update
After the update finishes, you will have a new "lists" folder and synaptic package manager/Ubuntu software center should work.
I'm new to debian. I just installed Debian 6 via a single CD image. For some reason, I cannot find any kind of application that allows me to select software or install it. I've tried the instructions in many different threads on how to install software including synaptic package manager, software-center, etc. None of them seem to work or maybe there is something that I don't understand about this process in Debian.
I've used Ubuntu, openSuse, and !# so I am relatively familiar with terminal and installing software using different methods, but am not used to not having any kind of package manager to work with. I've downloaded "Software Center" for debian but terminal will not dpkg the package, advising errors. How to install some kind of package manager; "Software Center" or Synaptic would be preferable. I really want to try out Debian and get to know this operating system.
this happened to me before, where when I try to open Software Center, Synaptic package manager, or update manager, it would freeze with the window open and I would have to force it to shut down. I decided to re-install the OS after this happened and I just updated ubuntu and it is happening again.

I admit fooling around with trying to install nautilus elementary, not really knowing what I was doing, and now things are all messed up.

Using Lucid Lynx 10.04. Is your software center/ synaptic package manager working properly for you?
I just got Lucid installed after some minor troubles last night, but with the help of great people, I have it installed now (thank you!) and it all *ok, most* works beautifully!
However, I have been downloading/installing "Ubuntu restricted extras" , for the last 20 minutes now, and it is only at 12% .
In karmic koala, these things happened pretty quickly, but now it is just soooper slooooowww.
Before I started the restricted extras.. I installed VLC player, and that took about 15 minutes just for that. and now it is nowhere to be found!
It does not show in USC under installed software, nor does it show in synaptic..and it is in no menu, anywhere.
Speaking of synaptic...I cant get VLC, or Ubuntu restricted extras to show up, it does not 'find' them when I type their name into the search bar..it acts as if they don't exist.
I havent attempted to find, or install anything else that I had on my karmic box yet...only these 2 things, vlc and restricted extras....and both have been ..well.....painfully slow..... and vlc doesnt even seem to have installed, after it took 15-20 minutes, and said it was finished.
If this was "back to normal"...this would definitely be the best OS i have ever seen/used.
This is my first Linux experience so probably at the prenewbie level. I have installed Xubuntu and played with it for a couple weeks. The question is about software download attempts from Ubuntu Software center. When I attempt to use it I get the error messages:
Failed to lock the package manager
Check if you are currently running another software management tool, e.g. Synaptic or aptitude. Only one tool is allowed to make changes at a time. The package indexes are currently changed by apt-get. Does this mean that SPM is active and the Software Center will not function until I change enablement between the two? If so, how do I accomplish the task?
I just did a fresh install of 11.04 after a failed attempt of updating to 11.10. it installed fine and i was able to update everything fine. But out of the blue the three mentioned above crash immediately when i click on them, any body know a fix....i really dont wana do another fresh install.

I have no idea what this means, and googling has not turned up anything appreciably helpful. It does this for anything I try to install via synaptic, both the command line or gui versions.

installing programs on ubuntu, you see i run ubuntu on my old time computer from around late 90's early 2000 and the internet port on the back is for old telephone lines but i no longer have these wires. So I decided to download the packages on my newer acer laptop, put them on a usb and plug it in, but i have found out that .tar.gz is nothing like the windows executable .exe and scince i'm quite new to linux i have no where to start.
P.S i have already tried installing in terminal but failed miserably...

View 8 Replies View RelatedThere are a few programs (such as lillypad) that are not listed in the software manager that I would love to install. I'm confused as how to do so. When i go on lillypad's website there is no direct extraction link, it just lets me save the source code and tells me to compile. I'm brand new to linux, I'mreally confused and need some getting off on the right track. Also, I downloaded amarok and tuxguitar, whcih both output no sound when I try and run them. Amarock wont play and of my mp3s and just skips to the end of this list, and tux guitar just runs though without outputting any sound.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just did a fresh install of Xubuntu 9.10 x86 in a 4 gig pendrive.Just one ext4 partition for / and /home and a swap partition. Only one user created during installation.Everything's fine so far except for two things:-If I launch synaptic from the start menu, it asks for my password which I type in or even copy-paste to be sure.Strangely it always comes back saying incorrect password. If I open a terminal and call "sudo synaptic" and type in my password when prompted, the application shows up fine. Again if I do the same via the Run dialog (alt+F2), that is "sudo synaptic", nothing comes up. If I just type "synaptic", a pop up says that as a user I won't be able to install anything and blah-blah, and the application displays properly
