How do you open a program, in this instance "Zenmap", from the desktop in a user account when it requires root privileges? Is there a way to be prompted for the password, the same way, for instance, you're prompted when mounting a new file system or making a change to the system? I tried entering 'sudo /usr/bin/zenmap' when creating the shortcut, however that didn't work.

while hardening a red hat enterprise 5 installation I have done something that causes the sessions of all user accounts except root to close immediately after authentication. in the /var/log/secure log file it will show three log entries per attempt:
<date/time><hostname> login: pam_unix(login:session): session opened for user fred by LOGIN(uid=0)
<date/time><hostname> login: LOGIN ON tty1 BY fred
<date/time><hostname> login: pam_unix(login:session): session closed for user fred
Since I did a number of things and have not been able to identify what caused this.
was a regular windows user for ~10 years now, but my current pc wasnt installing windows for some reason so i switched to linux to try it out. Well title say it all how do you disable the screen programs opening text in 11.04 so you do not have to hit the enter key twice to get by the two pages of text to actually be running the program you started.

They either won't run or they make the screen go to a black painting screen (screen goes black and you can paint over it with your mouse to make the desktop reappear). View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I turn on my computer I am greeted by an unending stream of "Starting File Managers" appearing in the programs list. This cannot be stopped, though none of the file managers actually open. They just sit there filling up my programs bar and wasting my cpu slowing down computer. It also means I cant upon my own folders, or see what programs I have open.If I run terminal, type xkill and click on one of the buttons in the programs list, that kills them all, and I can see my programs again for a bit, until it fills up again. The panel disappears and appears again, with all the spawning messages gone and any other programs I have open remain there. Its just the randomly spawned "Starting File Managers" that don't come back.
My CPU fluctuates. Its around 60% to 90% load, when it should be idle, but is instead opening all these windows.When I view the processes the most CPU intensive (when I sort) is Gnome System Monitor at 6% and then Gnome panel at 5%,gconfd-2 is as around 2%, compiz.real, dbus-deamon hover around 1%. And everything else is generally at 0%.So somewhere, a hidden process is using about 70% of my CPU load. Which isn't shown in system-monitor. Maybe because its an admin process and I can only see simple user processes. I dunno.There is something else though. I have a process with no name appearing, its blank. And it keeps disappearing and re-appearing. So you can hardly select it hard enough to kill it. I managed to kill it once and it said error, process (large number, 10,000 or 100,000) does not exist. So can't be killed.When I do an xkill the console writes:

I use Mathematica 7.0 through my school's SSH server. This involves:
-loading their font server via "xset fp+ tcp/c1.ucalgary.ca:7100"
-connecting to the SSH server via "ssh -X useruser@servername.ca"
-entering my password Then I choose to run Mathematica via ". use mathematica 7" then to load the GUI "mathematica".
Sometimes, and only sometimes, the screen goes to the error in the attached picture, stays there for about 5 seconds, brings me to the login screen. When I log in again, all of my applications that were running, open folders, and my terminal windows are closed.

However, what the solutions I found until now offer me, is the possibility to create a new desktop session and view that one (or run an application an view that one). It was working fine, until I installed Kubuntu on a separate partition, and now Ubuntu acts funny (i can browse anywhere, but cant create new folders, download files, execute files, etc. The problem exists in any and all folders (/ and /home)I can do so if I access nautilus as root...I now reinstalled ubuntu, and still the same problem.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhenever I try to do anything that requires administrative permissions, including Synaptic, the Update Manager, or installing something on the Software Center, the "Starting Administrative Application" task comes up on the window list, but then the window does not come up and whatever action was supposed to be taken does not happen; no error messages, nothing. Also, whenever I use su or sudo in the command prompt, nothing shows up when I type my password; then when I hit Enter, it gives me an authentication error.
EDIT: It seems that the "Add/Remove Applications" program as well as the Software center do not have this problem. Synaptic and the Updates Manager, however, still do not work.
Is there a way to drop privileged sudo rights? a schellscript or applet?

Same thing with partition edd root terminal.Terminal runs fine (and i can su root from there) as do other things such as firefox,em monitor,update manager add/remove applications. apt-get still works fine. Just want to mention i have 500 megs of ram. Any ideas? Are there logs dumped somewhere for this kind of thing? Synaptic package manager still runs using dpkg from the terminal.

I'm currently using Slackware 13.0 and have my machine behind a Linksys DD-WRT router. I believe the DD-WRT software has all ports blocked by default so opening up my machine for SSH login would only leave my system vulnerable at that port. To give an extra layer of security for that opened port, I've created the following script that would be invoked as the users' shell.

The other day Home folder on desktop didn't work, I clicked on it and mouse icon would just load and load, but it didn't open it, i had to go to Menu -> Places -> Home to open it. I created my own shortcut to Home and didn't pay too much attention to it. But today I connected my phone via USB and folders mounted on desktop and I got the same behavior, when I click on it, the whole desktop icons disappear and reload but folder doesn't open. And when I go to network, the same thing happens. I recently reinstalled my openSuse, could it be that it took the settings or something from the old installation?

the computer is an ancient dell dimension 4600 desktop (circa ~2002) running windows xp. i've run ubuntu from a live cd and installed flash as a test. videos videos play fine, so that's not a problem. i don't really want to replace the computer becasue it still works and is only used by him to run firefox. i am willing to buy a new computer if that turns out to be the only option.i've been using ubuntu exclusively on my laptop for several years and i would like to remove windows from his computer and replace it with ubuntu. i'm wondering how i can make his computer as accessible as possible to him while not sacrificing too much security.my son has very poor fine motor control over his hands. he can use a mouse with some difficulty, but using a keyboard is out of the question. he can use the mouse to click on the shortcuts to his favorite videos, but i can't think of how he would be able to enter a password for his account. not only does he have the fine motor problem, but he is not able to remember any usefully secure password.
does anyone have any ideas about how to make his computer accessible to him without opening a gaping security hole? two ideas that i've kicked around are creating a user with absolutely the minimum privileges required to use firefox and no password or finding some way to enter a password that doesn't require a keyboard. i haven't come up with how to implement either of those ideas successfully.
I have a strange problem. I have two Linux boxes. They are connected via a LAN. From machine 1 (Fedora Core 8) I can ssh to machine 2 (Fedora Core 3)without any problems if I am logged in as root on machine 1. If I am logged in as any other non-privileged user and attempt to ssh to machine 2, I get a segmentation fault and the connection is dropped (after ssh asks for the password).
Everything was working up until last Friday (8/6/2010). I did upgrade the machine 1 from 512Kb to 2.0Gb memory then..
