I'm having a problem installing programs via synaptic. supposing I issue the command: sudo apt-get install <program> (and assuming the program is in the repositories), I get an error like follows:
I have no idea what this means, and googling has not turned up anything appreciably helpful. It does this for anything I try to install via synaptic, both the command line or gui versions.
The full error output is below:
For example you go to the synaptic and you delete some programs.And then you make a mistake you delete some another program which is tied to the system. If i go in terminaland i write sudo apt-get install --fix-missing will be installed back the program which was deleted by mistake?

I have also installed NES emulator, but it could be found by searching its name in the Menu. I'm sure I haven't selected to only download the package and not install it.

I also have a desktop with no wireless or wired connection. My question is how do I transfer my apps from my laptop to my desktop in offline mode?

I've just did a fresh install of Xubuntu 9.10 x86 in a 4 gig pendrive.Just one ext4 partition for / and /home and a swap partition. Only one user created during installation.Everything's fine so far except for two things:-If I launch synaptic from the start menu, it asks for my password which I type in or even copy-paste to be sure.Strangely it always comes back saying incorrect password. If I open a terminal and call "sudo synaptic" and type in my password when prompted, the application shows up fine. Again if I do the same via the Run dialog (alt+F2), that is "sudo synaptic", nothing comes up. If I just type "synaptic", a pop up says that as a user I won't be able to install anything and blah-blah, and the application displays properly

I managed to trash network-manager-gnome removing it by mistake instead of a package with a similar name..... oops. So now have no network connections. I downloaded the following file network-manager-gnome_0.8~a~git.20091014t134532.4033e62-0ubuntu1_i386.deb via a computer with a net connection. and now have it on a usb key. Can I point the synaptic package manager to the local package and install like that, or do I have to do it via the console. I also have my original Karmic 9.10 disk, which I imagine has the package on as well. Is there a way to add it via the system installer?

I'm new to debian. I just installed Debian 6 via a single CD image. For some reason, I cannot find any kind of application that allows me to select software or install it. I've tried the instructions in many different threads on how to install software including synaptic package manager, software-center, etc. None of them seem to work or maybe there is something that I don't understand about this process in Debian.
I've used Ubuntu, openSuse, and !# so I am relatively familiar with terminal and installing software using different methods, but am not used to not having any kind of package manager to work with. I've downloaded "Software Center" for debian but terminal will not dpkg the package, advising errors. How to install some kind of package manager; "Software Center" or Synaptic would be preferable. I really want to try out Debian and get to know this operating system.

Only one person I know of has been able to help me connect it to the internet and I can't find him anywhere, (Not ont he internet, in real life) so I figure that instead of trying to connect to the internet to get all my favorite programs, I should just download the programs to a flash drive and put them on that way. But I tried installing the mupen64plus from the package manager, and everytime I open a rom, mupen64plus closes and doesnt load anything....
That version was 1.5, and I downloaded 1.99.3 or whatever it is from the mupen site, but I cant get the sucker to install. There is a install.sh file which I chmod +x too. I then tried, ,/install.sh, make install.
I'm trying to install a program which requires Java VM. The installer is a install.bin file, coming with a eclipse folder; in this folder, you can find a "jre" directory. I also installed Coconut Java virtual machine, as well as OpenJDK Java 6 runtime environment. However, I still can't install the program. Executing the installer gives me this error message:

I have an eeepc 701 4gb running Ubuntu eeepc, however I have two major problems:
1) I have run out of disk space even for upgrading the operating system and essential software such as flash. There is nothing on my eeepc that I dont deem essential and no files just programs.
2) I get an error message saying my disk is being used outside of designed paramaters and may be faulty (ironically it also says my battery is faulty but it is working fine)
As such I want to buy a 16gb or 32gb SDHC card and use that as my main harddrive (cheaper than buying a new one and they are on offer atm). I know how to do this on XP but I would much rather keep Ubuntu.
So I just downloaded Ubuntu to be put on my other partition(I have a C: and a D: drive) So stupid me had a brain fart and ended up not making a new partition and putting Ubuntu on the D: drive which was 3/4 of my total hard drive. So now I have 120 GB for Windows and 350 GB for Ubuntu. So I went to Gparter on Ubuntu and tried to open it and it had an error before it even opened. And when I first went in to Ubuntu it had like 2 things pop up with errors. So I went back to Windows 7 and tried to use the partitioner there and it wouldn't let me expand my C: drive. What am I supposed to do?

However, most of the stuff I read concerning updates and installations rely heavily on the machine using an internet connection to automatically install various packages.I don't mind reading up myself on this kind of thing but I think I need a pointer in the right direction as "ubuntu package install without apt/get" doesn't bring up much on a google search (the only entry on the first page is a post on this forum back from 2005 about kernal compiling!).
As an example, the file I would like to install is "aircrack-ng-1.0.tar.gz", which I've already downloaded and saved to my machine's desktop. I'm not really asking how to install aircrack, per se, but just any kind of package without relying on an internet connection (i.e. download the program/package to a flash disk and then on to my machine).
I want to know how do you install programs on this debian system? I downloaded a program as a tar.gz but I dont know how to install it on the system or where to put the files.

When I installed bitpim via RPM downloaded from bitpim.org it installed fine. It is not in the applications area. I type Alt+F2 and i start to type in bitpim (it types the rest) and press enter. nothing happens.
i installed PythonCard through the terminal using yum install PythonCard. It installed fine and it is not in applications and is nowhere to be found. However when I type yum install PythonCard again in the terminal it says it is up to date. So I removed it and reinstalled. Same problem.

I'd like to be able to run a mythtv frontend on it so that I can watch shows in my office and not lose the screen space on my regular desktop. I was thinking of three possible directions to go. I have a question to go with each though.
1.) This machine has an existing winxp install that I don't want to mess up, but is there something on a Fedora live cd that I could use to smashing that winxp install into a smaller space and repartitioning the drive? If so, I could just do an old fashion dual boot from the harddrive.
2.) I put a live install on a usb drive. If I do that, how do I install mythfrontend and make it persistant on the usb drive?
3.) I treat a usb drive like a regular hard drive and just do a normal fedora install, assuming the install sees the usb drive as a sd? device. I guess I don't have a question with this option, but I would rather avoid it since it will take a lot more space on the usb drive.

The way I have it configured right now, it just loads right up without a root menu or boot-options, just basically going straight to "hey, u ROOT or DEMO?" I'm not sure if there's a way to get back to the bash and load directly to RAM at this point.
In another thread I was looking into burning backups from k3b as I run live because my DVD-player isn't behaving right now under windows... 'still working on that I want to get a backup done before I do a hard install. It's my goal to get either Kismet, wireshark, or Airsnort/crack/peek running on this machine so I can start gathering packets and doing analysis. Is that a way that (atleast for the timebeing until I can work out backups) that I can install any of these programs directly to the USB (by editing the ISO somehow?), so that they'll be available when I liveboot?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install bitcoin onto my computer, and the Linux version only comes in tar.gz, and I can extract it just fine, however when I put in ./configure using the command line...it doesn't work...so I checked the README file and it didn't mention doing that...it simply told me to run either /bin/64/bitcoin or to run /bin/32/bitcoin However when I try running first one, /bin/64/bitcoin, it simply says something about there not being a shared library...But when I try to run /bin/32/bitcoin it simply says "Permission Denied" and yes I tried running as root when I first saw that...didn't do any good.
