Jul 29, 2010I'm currently in the last steps of migrating a CentOS mailserver to the x64 version.However, under the old 32 bit version, I was using XRDP to access the Centos box from my Windows boxes.However I can't seem to find the XRDP package in the standard repos so this is prompting me to look at possible alternatives (XRDP was incompatible with my windows 7 box anyway soI had to RDP to another server of ours running 2003 to RDP into the mailserver which was far from ideal).Basically, I'd like to be able to seamlessly access the Centos box with a standard RDP client.
I know VNC Server/Clients would be an option but RDP gives me the freedom of any windows box being able to access the server on the same adress/port without installing software on any windows box I encounter.Are there any viable alternatives to XRDP ?There's no "add-on" to VNC server that could enable it to accept RDP connections ?
Ubuntu :: Minimal Desktop Install And Remote Desktop
Apr 8, 2011I am trying to setup my HTPC. I wanted to have the most minimal overhead possible so I installed Ubuntu 10.10 server from the mini.iso and just added the ssh option. I then used the following command to give me a desktop environment because I will want to run firefox and it apparently requires this to run.
Here is the command that I ran:apt-get install xorg gnome-core gdm gnome-applets gnome-system-tools gnome-utils ubuntu-artwork compiz-gnome firefox sysv-rc-conf.The desktop works fine and I can open fire fox, however, the remote desktop is missing from the preferences menu.How can I install this? I would like to add the remote desktop option from a command line.

Jul 27, 2010I am relatively new to Linux, but have been running Ubuntu for quite a while personally. I am setting up a simple CentOS server to run RT: Request Tracker [URL] here at work. This is going to be a simple virtual server running on VMware ESXi. I have the server up and running in VMware workstation. Since this will be a virtual server we will need to remotely administrate it. It is not a member of our Windows domain, it doesn't really need to be. So I can't connect to it remotely, and I am stuck. I have set the remote desktop preferences, and choose not to ask for confirmation, and set a password, but I cannot connect. I am using VNC Viewer. If I enter the host name it cannot be found, I am guessing because it isn't part of the domain DNS doesn't know how to find the host, but it also doesn't work when I attempt to connect via IP address. I can ping, and I can SSH with Putty but we will need to remote desktop to administrate RT.

Jan 28, 2011If you do a search on the web you can find where to download Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection 7 client (rdp client). To get it to work under Wine (I used Crossover Office) actually was pretty simple. You will need to copy four files from an existing Windows 7 system. Two of them, mstc.exe and mstscax.dll are located in the C:WINDOWSsystem32 directory. The other two files, mstsc.exe.mui and mstscax.dll.mui, are located in a subdirectory within C:WINDOWSsystem32.
The name of the subdirectory will depend on the language and locale of the Windows system you are using. If your language is English and you are in the USA, they will be located in C:WINDOWSsystem32en-us. Copy those 4 files to some temporary directory on your Linux system. Next create a new Wine Windows XP "bottle". Use either Crossover or Wine to browse to the SAME wine C: drive subdirectories as on the Win7 PC (see above) and copy the respective files into each subdirectory in your Wine Bottle. Two files each into 2 different directories.
Next using either Crossover or Wine execute the RDC 7 application.

In Crossover you can just click the button the RUN a COMMAND and just enter "mstsc.exe". The RDC login screen should appear prompting for a Server address and a login ID. You can also change various other "options". I have not tested alot but it does seem to work pretty well so far.

Feb 6, 2011I maintain plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 systems for several friends. Each machine has only one user, the owner. I use Remote Desktop to instruct and to perform maintenance. Here's my problem:After updating the system, if the kernel has changed, a restart is needed. If I do a restart, I then have to phone the owner to insert his login credentials in the gdm login screen, before I can do anything else via Remote Desktop on that machine.There ought to be a simple way I can avoid the phone call and login myself.
I'd strongly prefer not to use any software that is not included in a plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 installation. And I don't want to weaken system security beyond what it is now.Is there a solution? Or, what is the simplest solution?

Mar 18, 2010I'm working on getting my myth box hooked up to my Sony flat panel display.Originally the nvidia drivers could not read the EID, so defaulted to only 640x480 over my HDMI-DVI connection.I manually updated xorg.conf with a mode for the resolution I know the thing can handle. Suddenly there are several resolutions avaialble in nvidia-settings and it seems to be communicating with the TV, as it is now listed as a Sony FP display rather than a CRT.I'm able to change the resolution now as expected.my problem, however, lies with the TV itself. I can't seem to get it to actually display the output. I'm able to remote desktop into the box and can see Gnome logged in and everything.However nothing on the TV itself.How do I troubleshoot this? Am I missing something obvious?

The machines are side by side The Ubuntu box is hardwired to my network router, and the XP machine is connected via wireless. Both get to the internet fine, and I can ping the Ubuntu box from the XP box. Aug 14, 2009I'm trying to create a CentOS based liveCD that mounts a NFS share and executes one script there. The NFS never mounts altough while logged I can mount it with the very same command that I use in the KS.
In the %post I have :

mkdir /mnt/nfs
mount -o nolock 10.23.1.1:/csc/RemoteHome /mnt/nfs
I added the --log in order to debug, but nothing is written in /tmp/post.log. I tried redirection on the mount command with >> /tmp/debug.log but this is not written. Maybe during the post sequence /tmp is RO ? Anyway, I tried with ifup lo, service portmap start in the %post, but doesnt change (I even have a service : command not found in the live cd creator output).

However, what the solutions I found until now offer me, is the possibility to create a new desktop session and view that one (or run an application an view that one). Dec 14, 2009I have VMware server installed on this machine. I also have a Windows XP VM running all the time. I have it bridged so it gets a valid IP from my router and such and is in my network. I use KRDC to remote desktop to it and I make it full screen. However if I want to go back to my desktop I have to minimize KRDC.
Is there a RPD client out there I can use so I can go full screen on 1 desktop and have everything else on another desktop then use KDE's Desktop switcher or ctrl+alt+arrow keys to switch between desktops to flip between Windows XP and Linux without having to minimize?

Jan 20, 2010I've been using Linux on a more regular basis for the last two months now and have been able to find replacements for most of the software i use in Windows, or by using Wine. But i have one big problem that is keeping me from switching permanently to Linux. I frequently use remote control software to access and control my computers, both at home and to access my computers from remote places over the internet. I've been using NetOp, and more recently RealVNC. The client, or "viewer" part of RealVNC is working fine in both Windows and Linux. It's the host or server part that i can't get to work properly when it comes to VNC. The vnc.so module doesn't work on my system, x0vncserver program seems rather useless since it refuses to load before i have a network connection and this prevents me from start the program automatically as the wireless connection isn't ready and the vncserver command isn't an option since it doesn't display what i see on the actual screen. So, does anyone have a nice solution to this problem? Either to make VNC work or suggest some software that does. Anyway, it has to work on both Windows and Linux, in Linux it has to display the native x display, there must be built-in encryption and preferably be free or open-source software. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10.
