I'd like open windows to reappear from the taskbar faster. There's always a delay of at least 1 or 2 seconds between clicking on a minimized window and it being restored.
At first I assumed this was a limitation of ubuntu, but I've realised since the delay is the same across the board, regardless of the application, which makes me think it's a deliberate setting.
Am I right - and if so where can I alter it?
Two very simmilar laptops connected to the same WiFi router loading the same web pages. Firefox on Windows does that for 3 secons, while Firefox on Ubuntu needs 1-3 minutes to load the same page. What could be the reason for this? Any idea how to fix it? The laptop with Ubuntu runs 10.04 LTS (lucid), Firefox is 3.6.10 and on any other WiFi network it loads the web pages really faster but why is much slower than Windows now?When testing the speed on URL...Ubuntu loads times faster than Windows. The WiFi router has been reseted. Firefox has been started in -safe-mode, both didn't help.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI know this may be just me being a little bias on OS's but... I quite honestly believe that "some" programs run faster on linux than on windows.
Open Office for example, It runs amazingly fast on my linux distro but runs horribly (laggy) on my Vista machine.
Firefox also appears to run faster on my linux machine than on my Vista machine.
There are several more examples but I could go on and on with this.
My point is, do programs run faster on linux than on windows? Or is it just me that is in denial?
I am not sure if comparing linux to Vista is a good comparison in terms of program speed or not...
Also it should be noted that the Vista machine "hardware" is "several" times faster than my linux machine's "hardware".
I am not trying to start a flame war or anything like that, I am just trying to make sure I haven't totally lost my mind.
I've set up the Apple Magic Trackpad with my dual-scren Ubuntu system, the screens of which give me combined screen resolution 3360x1050. It works basically, however the coordinate ranges are messed up, as follows.Moving my finger the bottom of the trackpad to the top, my pointer moves from bottom of display to top.However the same is true horizontally: From the left side of the trackpad to the right, the pointer moves from the left of the monitor A to the right of monitor B.Thus the speed horizontally is 3 times what it is vertically.How can I fix this? Even if I remove one monitor (no big deal) the pointer will still move 50% faster horizontally

Whenever I go to speedtest.net I ger over 20mbs with windows 7 and .098mbs with debian and ubuntu can wnyone tell me what is going on. I called AT&T Uverse and they said that I had over 900 file sharing sessions still open and that is what was causing the problem so they reset my network gateway for me ad we tried again, same thing debian low ethernet speed windows 7 very high ethernet speed can anyone help me out with this
View 4 Replies View RelatedI noticed that on Linux, applications are much, much smaller but they take forever to start sometimes (namely, OpenOffice). However, MS Office starts up super fast, but I see it is huge (it needs 2GB to install).
Is there a trade-off between size and start time? If so, is it possible to "enlarge" some of my programs so they would start faster? I have plenty of unused disk space, and a few larger programs wouldn't really hurt.
I have been testing with the ATI Catalyst drivers. I have made a package from the 9.12. I have found that they were not working the way I want, so i tried to switch back via synaptic. I have removed everything which had to do to "fglrx"
now when I restart, here is the message i get

For information, it does start in low graphic mode. I have reinstalled the "fglrx" module, but the problem is still the same. If I reinstall the fglrx drivers from synaptic or terminal, I am back with the newer catalyst driver. I cannot switch back to the ubuntu repository one it seem.

I've recently upgraded to 11.04.Till now, I could select an option to make the open folders on shutdown, to restore on startup.There was an option to restore running applications
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a sony vaio netbook and installed ubuntu on it some months ago After some weeks windows 7 crashed and stopped booting I tried to recover it but still no success. When i bought it it had one partition only (plus the first one for windows recovery) When I installed ubuntu I partitioned my hard drive at my pleasure as you can see in attached image When I try to recover windows 7 it says it "can't find the windows partition or it's too small" Since 80 gb is not too small, i bet it can't recognized the partition anymore. Can anybody suggest a way to let it recognize my sda2 ? Does it have to have the "C:" label or "Windows something"? (I can only name it C without colons) Does it have to formatted FAT in a particular way ?

I've worked with Wubi before, and I liked it so much, I decided to go full scale with Ubuntu. However, I think I've missed an option in the setup, because Grub has now taken over my bootloader. I tried reverting to the Windows loader with EasyBCD, but booting Ubuntu from there is impossible, since it doesn't show itself. By the way, I don't really understand EasyBCD, so that makes it even harder. Anyway, what I'm trying to accomplish here, is to get a bootloader which uses Windows as default and Ubuntu as secondary OS. How do I do this?

Since I've been using Ubuntu I haven't run into any major screwups like with windows , but there are some times I've installed it and it took a while to get different things working. I don't want to have to go through the whole process again if there's ever a major malfunction.
I have been dealing with this all day! I cannot remove Ubuntu and recover the free space for Windows. When I remove Ubuntu, I can't access Windows.
I have three partitions, one being the main Windows partition and two with no names being the ubuntu partitions.
So I have been trying for the past 24 hours to get Ubuntu installed on my primarily Windows 7 PC, along with the BackTrack Linux OS, so I can explore things dealing with security a bit more, I decided to Dual Boot into Ubuntu and VMware BackTrack for the obvious reason of I am dealing with Viruses/Hacking and such and would rather do that in a safe environment. So after getting Ubuntu installed and working I now have the Grub boot menu along with 5 options 2 for Ubuntu, 2 that slipped my mind, & 1 for Windows (Loader).
My question is, is there any simple way to get the boot menu for Windows back with it just listing "Ubuntu & Windows 7" as two separate options. Sorry for the small level of incompetence its been about 3 years since I was in school getting constantly refreshed with all the info. EDIT: I should probably mention that if I had just done the install on a new HDD instead of an partitioned external I wouldn't of had a problem.
Iv looked around for the tutorials but none of them worked i keep getting errors.

I'm working directly in an Ubuntu Virtual Machine (VM). Some updates (like kernel) were available at the update manager.If I weren't using a VM, I wouldn't update it since it's a risk to break something. Since it's a VM, you can create a Snapshot or export an appliance and restore if something goes wrong.Suppose I'm not using a VM with a Debian/Ubuntu installation. Is there a install-restore approach that doesn't depend in a VM configuration to restore your system exactly before an upgrade (Like a "Restore Point" in Windows), being easy to restore like a VM appliance?

Is there any way to simply remove grub? Does GRUB reside in a specific partition? Do I have to just delete the partition that has GRUB on it?The way my bootable partitions work is something like this.
1)Installed Vista
2)Installed Ubuntu
3)Thought I removed GRUB
4)Put in new HDD(1) and installed Win7 onto it
5)Put in another new HDD(2) and put another Win7 onto that (but I disconnected every other HDD so that the bootloader would be written onto the new HDD(2). When I have all my HDD's plugged in now, I get a GRUB load error (I think it's 21).
Here's the short version of what happened
--Had windows 7 and installed Ubuntu dual boot
--all was well but after some messing around with a failed Backtrack install I had to repartition some things to clean it up
--The partition where Backtrack was installed was corrupt so I deleted it and extended my Ubuntu partition.
--reload got the no such partition rescue grub
--read threw a bunch of forums and could only seem to find mostly threads on only being able to load Ubuntu and not Windows. Most having to do with post OS install problems and not re partitioning.
--I decided the best thread to follow was [url]
--after that my memory of events is a bit fuzzy, a lot was going on. In short I got a message in the terminal saying "this is a BAD idea" and something about another MBR. (sorry I cant be more specific)
--reading on I decided I would try my windows bootloader restore
--now windows loads up fine but it doesn't even give me an option to boot Ubuntu. I launched a live CD and checked GParted. The partition is still there.

Basically, I used a USB stick to run ubuntu 9.10 live, then tried to install to an external 500gb HDD connected with a Sharkoon Drivelink USB adaptor. The installation went fine, but I get a GRUB error 21 when booting a lot of the time. I figure this is due to the way in which the drive is connected. I am a complete noob, and I want to just ove GRUB completely and restore my Vista bootloader. Unfortunately, I do not have an installation disk as my laptop didn't come with one, and none of the others I have other PC's are the same version (home premium 32-bit).If you know of a way to fix the GRUB issue/sso I can use the external drive I would love to hear them too, but the main aim of this thread is to help me remove GRUB and restore the windows bootloader. have an Intel Core2 Duo system that would dual boot via GRUB between Windows Vista and Fedora 10. I recently attempted to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7, however because the version of Vista I had would not upgrade to Windows7. This has removed the ability to boot into my Fedora 10 installation. View 1 Replies View RelatedI decided it was time to reinstall Windows 7 because it became increasingly slow. I know that there's a different solution to solve this problem, but as a user I'm just more satisfied with the noob friendliness of Windows. However, I know that it has its drawbacks so I had a dual boot setup with Wubi (30GB). My old configuration was as follows:
C: partition of size ~80GB with Windows 7 x64 installed
D: partition of size ~400GB with data and a wubi ubuntu at D:/ubuntu
So what I did was this:
- Backup all my personal files and D:/ubuntu on a external hdd
- Wipe the partitions using the windows installer
- Create a C: of 100GB and a D: of 380GB
- install windows 7 x64 on the C: partition
Now I would like to restore my backup of the old D:/ubuntu to a working dual boot system. I realize I may have missed some opportunities and the data may be gone, but I only found out about that when it was too late. I have tried installing wubi, and replacing the new ubuntu folder with the old one, but this did not work.

I have also tried replacing only the root.disk file, with the same result. I searched for other people's solutions, but they did not seem to work in my case.
I had an older PC on which I had two SATA drives and an IDE one and on the latter I had Windows 7 installed (I kept it on that drive since I'm not using Windows 7 that often, I'm primarily using Debian as my daily go-to OS), but since then I got a new PC which has no connectivity for IDE, so I had to decommision the drive, and before I did that, I backed up the Windows 7 partition (and the second partition which I used mostly for storing sofware and stuff that I wouldn't want to get wiped after a fresh Windows install) using dd.
Not reading up on this on the internet, doing so with the intention to restore the partition image on the same spot on the disk, but since the SSD is larger than the IDE drive, I made the partitions on it bigger, so there's no chance the Windows 7 partition to be on the same spot on the disk. I tried booting into Windows 7 from GRUB after it successfully detected the Win7 install on the second partition on the SSD, but it just leaves me with a blank screen with a blinking white cursor, so I'm guessing it's not going to fly again. So my question to you: is it possible to ressurect the Windows 7 installation, avoiding having to reinstall Windows? (which would severly complicate things, having to backup and wipe the Debian install I have on the first partition...)
So far I've tried this to fix the Windows 7 install by pointing at the right disk "coordinates": [URL] ...., but I can't seem to get it to work, all I get is some error in regards to not being able to detect the disk's geometry (I think it was the number heads I couldn't figure out to input in the command line), so I couldn't fix it.
My problem is that I have installed openSUSE 11.2 on a laptop with Windows 7 already installed. Yast resized my Windows partitions, which seemed to upset Windows as I had to go to my Windows Recovery Disc to restore it. When Windows was restored it did something so that GRUB no longer appeared. So I did a system recovery for openSUSE 11.2 which then removed Windows 7 from GRUB! Now I'm trying to restore Windows 7 and configure GRUB so that Windows and openSUSE will stop fight for boot supremacy and play nice with each other. Here are my Yast2 Boot Loader settings:
