Ubuntu :: No Option For Dual Boot After Windows MBR Restore

Here's the short version of what happened
--Had windows 7 and installed Ubuntu dual boot
--all was well but after some messing around with a failed Backtrack install I had to repartition some things to clean it up
--The partition where Backtrack was installed was corrupt so I deleted it and extended my Ubuntu partition.
--reload got the no such partition rescue grub
--read threw a bunch of forums and could only seem to find mostly threads on only being able to load Ubuntu and not Windows. Most having to do with post OS install problems and not re partitioning.
--I decided the best thread to follow was [url]
--after that my memory of events is a bit fuzzy, a lot was going on. In short I got a message in the terminal saying "this is a BAD idea" and something about another MBR. (sorry I cant be more specific)
--reading on I decided I would try my windows bootloader restore
--now windows loads up fine but it doesn't even give me an option to boot Ubuntu. I launched a live CD and checked GParted. The partition is still there.
Sorry if this is threaded somewhere already, I know that annoying. I'm just burnt out on combing forums and broke down and decided to ask directly

I want to install Ubunto netbook on my compaq mini 730, but I want to keep my windows xp OS as well and have the dual boot option. At the moment I have the hard drive partitioned to C and D. My question is - what is the best way to install ubuntu and keep windows ? Should I create a separate partition for it ? if yes what size ? Can Ubunto install itself on C next to windows automatically ?

I've installed Lubuntu alongside my existing Windows XP installation. The menu came up on boot allowing me to boot into either Lubuntu or XP. But, after I install all the Lubuntu updates and restart, the option to boot into XP is gone. The boot menu comes up, but no XP option. I reinstalled Lubuntu again with the same results: after the updates, no XP option. I'm thinking I will reinstall Lubuntu again, and before I run the updates, I will make a copy of grub.cfg for later reference so I can add the XP section in again- am I on the right track here?

I have a fubar'd Windows 7 install I need to get working on another partition so I can do some development stuff. I use Ubuntu 95% of the time though and so the machine has an option at boot for what OS I want to go into. Does anyone know if I boot up with the Windows disc in and choose the repair option if it will screw up my boot options and I potentially lose my ability to boot into Ubuntu?

A while ago I messed up my Ubuntu installation so I decided to boot the install from the disc again and overwrite it. It turns out the installation disc does not give you the option to replace a current Ubuntu installation so I was forced to take more space out of my windows [vista] installation. This means I now have 1 ruined Lucid Ubuntu OS, 1 Working Lucid Ubuntu OS and a windows Vista OS system. Is it safe to delete my ruined Ubuntu from inside vista? Is it possible to overwrite my Ubuntu installations? How can I delete them both and then install Lucid again?
I want to know this now as Maverick Meerkat will be released on Sunday and I want to install that in a clean installation without deleting my vista installation. I do not have the Vista installation disc because Vista came pre-installed. I am not willing to buy anything.

There are way too many answers from archives on this so I decided to ask it again to maybe remove the confusion, for me and others. I had Vista and Ubuntu as dual boot, something ate my Vista doc settings folder (probably me). I want to reinstall it. It won't because of the set up in the grub I guess. I am not a serious Linux command line person but do follow directions well. Is there some somewhat easy way for me to restore my Vista?
I am aware of Win 7 etc. I have a Dell laptop so want to use the Dell restore CD. I am not alone in this. I run into people all over with a similar problem.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu as a dualboot, i also have Windows XP. But during the installation, when this screen should appear
(Translation)
(*) Dualboot, choose at startup
( ) Empty and use complete harddisk
( ) Use biggest connected space
( ) Manually adjust partitions.
I get a screen with only 2 options, the second and forth. How do I get the Dualboot option?

I was running Ubuntu 10.04 as my only OS. I then booted from the Ubuntu CD and divided my HD into two partitions, one for my Ubuntu and the other I formatted to NTFS so I could load Windows. I booted from the Windows CD and installed Windows on the second partition. I am now unable to boot into Ubuntu and I do not have a boot menu at start-up to choose what OS I want. I went back in with my Ubuntu CD and selected the "bootable" option for both partitions through Disk Utility but it still boots only to Windows. If I change the Linux partition to "bootable" and deselect that option from the NTFS partition, my computer starts up and then give the error, "No operating system present." What do I have to do in order to have a boot menu show up that will allow me to choose what OS to use at start-up?

have just installed Ubuntu alongside Windows 7. I just went along with the manual set-up all through the install. I was expecting to see an obvious option on starting up my computer as to whether to run Ubuntu or Windows but it just goes right ahead and runs windows exactly as it did before the install.

I installed 11.04 after Windows 7. when the GRUB boot menu starts up there is an option for Win 7 boot but it will not boot windows. When that option is selected the screen changes colour for 2 seconds and then reverts to the GRUB menu. Ubuntu boots fine.I downloaded the Boot Info Script and ran it, the results are

I have recently setup a dual boot system that consist of Windows Vista and Fedora 12, I am looking for a solution that will allow me to create an entire restore image for both OS's on an external hard drive. I am looking for something that is easy to use, stable, and free. I have looked at clonezilla and have used Norton ghost 2003 in the past which is not supported with Windows Vista.

Problem concerns HP laptop running XP and Fedora 13 and using Grub2. When installed the grub became the primary bootloader. I have been unable to successfully use any of the common fixes to reload the windows bootloaderWindows install has been unable to reload the windows bootloader. With the grub being primary I cannot access the factory restore partition.Is there a way to disable the grub and force the machine to the restore partition or use a recovery distro to run it? I have tried Knoppix but was unable to access the partition. I am still a linux wbie and understand I may be missing something simple but have yet to resolve the issue and need help. I need to reformat the machine and will run linux from an external usb. At this point all data is backed up and I am open for any options.
I have tried to access the MBR directly but fixing it is beyond my current skill level.Additional details: Initial linux install along-side XP was Mint 9. It completely wiped out the bootloader and failed to install properly. Installed Fedora and it reloaded the grub and fixed the bootloader which allowed the machine to boot and function with both OS's.

Edit: I have a Sony Vaio FJ170 laptop with Phoenix BIOS version R0060X6 & a broken DVD Drive. The BIOS doesn't support booting from USB (it does have 'External Drive Boot' option, but my USB stick doesn't get listed under boot devices in BIOS when connected to the laptop).
A few days ago I upgraded to Windows7, then installed Lucid through WUBI. With the help of another thread of mine (here), I changed the default boot option & timeout of Windows to zero to directly boot into Ubuntu. So far it was good. But recently I tried to get back to Windows for some reason but could not succeed as the F8 key no longer brings up the Window's Advance Boot Menu.
Is there another way to restore the dual boot menu timeout to get back to the Windows installation. Or even better, is there some way to make a fresh install of Windows & Ubuntu side-by-side without DVD drive. I am only 14 and absolutely new to Linux. The network booting methods given on the Internet were too complex for me to understand. I like Ubuntu but also need Windows for programming C++ & Photoshop CS4.

No option to install alongside another OS. I have Win7 Starter on this new netbook and need to install Ubuntu 10.10 netbook addition. Disk Management shows 4 partitions, one is C:, one is D:, and two I've never seen before they're so small. Is it safe to delete these or do they have a purpose for the current Win OS? I would gladly install the 10.10 to my D: drive which seems to be SDA2, the 131GB partition. What's the right sequence of partitioning and formatting to give Ubuntu the full install it needs manually? And what needs to be taken care of for a Swap drive?

I installed fedora aside of windows 7 home premium 64 so I can choose which one to star. But its always fedora I set bios to boot from the cd drive and yes it ask me hit any key to boot from the cd so I can reinstall windows 7 but it's fedora again. It happens the same with the USB drive. I think I don't need to reinstall Win7, it's there in Hard Disk. I am new in Fedora (infact I installed Fedora today in the morning).

I have install ubuntu and windows in the same computer in their own partition. I think that I have remove something while I was reinstalling some wireless stuff using synaptic. When I launch the computer I get the dual booting but only with memory test and windows. I have the ubuntu installation cd. What can I do to get back the dual booting with the facility to launch ubuntu.

I've installed Windows 7 Ultimate on a notebook which previously ran Vista. No problems there.I've now installed Ubuntu (now updated to 10.04)so that it can boot to either OS.
It all works fine and when I first power up, I get a screen which invites me to select the OS I want to use. There are however two problems:
1) it defaults to Ubuntu (whereas I would prefer it to default to Windows 7 (it's a work laptop and most of the applications are Windows-specific),
2) the list of choices is getting increasingly complex with an expanding list of choices (with each major update of Ubuntu adding more); it even seems to include an option to go back to Vista!As long as I move down the list and make the right selection quite speedily, I get to where I want to be (though, as I say, I would like to change the default option).Is there any way I can edit/shorten this list without damaging the functionality and how can I change that default?

Basically what it says in the subject. In the Allocate Drive Space part of installation theres 'replace Windows 7 with Ubuntu' and 'Something else' but nothing for installing them alongside each other, which I want to do.

Initially had windows xp in my system. Picked up on free partition (*it was not a primary partition*) and installed Debian from CD. The installation went fine. Towards end of installation the grub install ran detected windows xp presence and I continued with the install. End of install, prompted that the system would reboot.
However on reboot, I wasnt presented when boot option ( windows xp vs debian) but my windows xp directly got booted. How to get this boot option.

I'm new to linux, and I'm just trying to learn OpenSUSE. I just installed it and I have a few quick questions. #1 I accidentally installed the "OpenSUSE Installer (LOCAL)" on Windows 7, so now I get the option to choose windows or the installer at the windows boot screen. I ended up just installing OpenSUSE on a completely different HD (my original intent) from a burned DVD, so this installer is useless and I don't know how to remove it.
#2 After installing opensuse on my second HD, the boot screen is now SUSE's instead of Windows, and I can choose suse's desktop, the suse failsafe, windows 1, and windows 2. Windows 1 brings me to the windows boot screen with the choice i mentioned above (windows or the local installer i accidentally installed), and windows 2 i assume is my second windows partition which is just my SWAP file, and selecting it does nothing (which would make sense if thats all it is).
My question here is how do I make it so my default boot screen is the windows one with an option between windows 7 or suse? Or would this require reinstalling the system? If it does and its simple enough to explain please do I wouldnt mind removing it and reinstalling at this point, I would just wipe my whole second HD from windows.
#3 I have a netgear adapter. unfortunitly i'm not at home right now and I don't remember the model, so I'll provide that this evening if necessary. What I do know is they do not have a driver for linux. I've found ACX100, but I didn't find my netgear adapter listed on their website. I also found NDISWrapper, but thats for XP and I still don't know if that'll work. I will of course try both unless someone here has a better solution. If anyone knows anything that will work on any netgear adapter for linux please let me know, if not then I'll provide the model later on.

So I have been trying for the past 24 hours to get Ubuntu installed on my primarily Windows 7 PC, along with the BackTrack Linux OS, so I can explore things dealing with security a bit more, I decided to Dual Boot into Ubuntu and VMware BackTrack for the obvious reason of I am dealing with Viruses/Hacking and such and would rather do that in a safe environment. So after getting Ubuntu installed and working I now have the Grub boot menu along with 5 options 2 for Ubuntu, 2 that slipped my mind, & 1 for Windows (Loader).
My question is, is there any simple way to get the boot menu for Windows back with it just listing "Ubuntu & Windows 7" as two separate options. Sorry for the small level of incompetence its been about 3 years since I was in school getting constantly refreshed with all the info. EDIT: I should probably mention that if I had just done the install on a new HDD instead of an partitioned external I wouldn't of had a problem.

I have an HTPC that dual boots Ubuntu 9.10 (upgraded from 9.04, so still using GRUB 1.x) and Windows (for Netflix duties). I recently rebooted the machine to watch some Netflix movies, only to discover that the GRUB menu no longer has an option to boot Windows.I imagine that this could have happened after an apt-get upgrade installing a new kernel; it has been a while since I rebooted the machine and could have missed it.

I've just installed 10.04 and its the best distribution i've seen yet! But I can no longer switch between windows and ubuntu like I have in previous installs. I get the normal boot screen options which are something along the lines off.
Boot ubuntu 10.04
recover ubuntu 10.04
restore factory default settings of your Toshiba machine
but no option to boot into windows, I can still access all my files and settings from within Ubuntu, so i haven't overwritten Windows

I'm in exactly the same sticky state. Was running my new Ubuntu 10.10 build alongside my original Windows 7 partition, but now the Windows 7 boot option has disappeared following a trip to the update manager Tried the Update Grub2 command to no avail. (e.g. sudo update-grub) What is weird is that I now have two Ubuntu boot options i.e.
"Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-23-generic"
"Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-23-generic" (Recovery Mode)
"Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-22-generic"
"Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-22-generic" (Recovery Mode)

I ran the same boot_info_script from as per a similar post (and above) in the hope you wizened peeps may see something I clearly can't. p.s. I'm as noob as they come and fearful of most areas of linux at this point.

I recently moved and didnt have internet. Out of a fit of boredom i decided to get me Ubuntu 10.10 disk and dual boot. My laptop has a SD slot in the front of it that has never been used so i decided that itd be cool to have ubuntu on an SD card that i could boot any time. I used the default installer to install it onto the SD card instead of using the Universal USB Installer (i imagine this is where i went wrong). It installed and everything works fine and when i boot up it lets me choose between Linux and Windows when the SD card is inserted. When it is not i get this screen http://imgur.com/gg63v. The only really problem is me worrying that the sd card will be lossed or get broke and i will no longer be able to access Windows. Is there anyway i can set the windows boot loader back t the default bootloader (i think this is what need to be done i may be completely wrong>
