General :: Error Code Oxd0000017 - Restore Windows Partition Without Installation Disc?
May 14, 2010I know i get the error code because i dont have my windows partition. But i seriously need my vista back. I tried using VMware player but it didn't work. Is there anyway i can restore my windows partition without the installation disc? The restore disc does not work as it needs a windows partition.

Mar 10, 2011I just backed up a complete copy of my C drive which has been partitioned 3 ways to have both windows and Linux mint on it with the loader which comes up when the computer is turned on. My question is that recently I used Norton ghost to backup my system and it failed to reinstall the grub. Will clonezilla reinstall the boot loader on my drive if I make a complete restore of the entire C drive. Is there any thing else I should be concerned about upon restore which I should take into account? I'm fine now but am asking concerning the future possibility of a restore.

Some updates (like kernel) were available at the update manager.If I weren't using a VM, I wouldn't update it since it's a risk to break something. Since it's a VM, you can create a Snapshot or export an appliance and restore if something goes wrong.Suppose I'm not using a VM with a Debian/Ubuntu installation. Is there a install-restore approach that doesn't depend in a VM configuration to restore your system exactly before an upgrade (Like a "Restore Point" in Windows), being easy to restore like a VM appliance?

Sep 10, 2010I did a bunch of updates, in sid, no issues. But when I rebooted the next day the log in had chanded. No problems logging in, the appearance had changed, and you now have to use the mouse to click on your name to open the password box, where before you could hit enter and get the same results. It is not much, but I have been trying to to restore it back with out much luck. I've played with gdm and gdm3 and a couple of other things but no luck. I did see a update for log in but have not been able to figure out the next step.

Sep 12, 2010I have my system and software and data on my computer on an internal drive. On that system I have Back in Time backup software. I use Back in Time, to backup my data to an external drive.
Question: If my computer dies or my internal drive fails, I have to completely re-install everything including my system and Back in Time. If I want to restore my data from the good external drive, how can I do that with Back in Time? Doesn't it keep the Snapshots info or preferences on my dead drive? Or do I need to point my freshly re-installed Back in Time just to the data drive and it will recognize the snapshots etc. automatically?

160 GB (Contained Windows 7)
500 GB
I copied entire 160 gb as an mirrored image to 500GB HDD using Acronis Disk Director. I deleted entire 160 GB HDD.. Removed the 500 GB HDD and kept it seperate.. Installed ClearOS Enterprise 5.2 Worked a little bit... The i wanted to delete ClearOS.. So i connected 500GB HDD and booted again in Acronis Disk director Formated the entire 160GB HDD.. Copied back the entire 160 from 500GB HDD.. Now my sytem refuses to boot... Just 4 letters "GRUB" appears on the screen... I tried booting using XP CD.. It gives a blue screen.. I tried Windows 7 CD.. It says unable to fix due to MBR problem..

Then i connect to a vpn service and the routing table get's changed..now when i close it, it doesn't reset back to my default routing table.

I was trying to think of the best way to back up and restore installation 'profiles' for a given server. In terms of a basic backup strategy.I currently back up the /etc, /var, /usr and /home directories with an rsync-based script, which has been working nicely so far.I also have a script which does a yum list installed on a certain configured server. It then 'diffs' this against the output from a base install of CentOS. The point of this is to figure out the packages installed for this server 'profile' so I can restore them.
Ideally, it would be nice if there were a way to generate kickstart files in reverse for a given server config. I was wondering what the best way to do this would be. Currently, I'm concerned enough about failures that I'm imaging stuff using Mondo Rescue.

Jan 27, 2010I've been using Knoppix "Live CD" 6.2 and partimage 0.6.7 to back up and restore my Microsoft Windows XP system volumes on various computers. However, partimage seems to be unwilling to back up one of these NTFS volumes which has bad sectors, some unreadable data. It hits that and stops. But this appears to happen at the same place when I have already used Windows to find and mark and, I assume, remove from use, the bad sectors. Hmm. I thought they'd be ignored. It appears I thought wrong.
If so, which of several other Linux-based or other partition backup tools may be suitable for the task - to ignore or tolerate bad sectors? The main goal is to be able to update the volume subsequently in a way that may be a terrible mistake, and in that case to restore the previous version. Sometime not too far in the future, I suppose I have to think about replacing the disk.
General :: Installed UNR ... Can't Get Windows 7 Back
Nov 16, 2010(Linux Noob here) I just installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix (the latest one off the official site) and had it installed on my Acer Aspire one Netbook. My netbook had Windows 7 prior to installing UNR. I managed to get a partition for UNR and installed it from the USB and just went with the steps (never gave me an option to install alongside Windows, since I booted using the UNR image from the USB).
so got UNR working but the problem is that there seems to be no option to boot to Windows 7. My netbook boots straight to UNR. I know I have to edit the GRUB or something but I have no idea how to even do this. How do I setup UNR so that I get the option to boot with either UNR or Windows. I previously installed Jolicloud and it was simple enough that it gave me the option to boot to either Jcloud or Win 7. How do I do this with UNR?
