My friend recently re-installed WinXP on his laptop, but I'm having trouble getting Grub2 working. I followed a guide online, but when I booted it back up again, I got a Grub prompt instead of a boot menu.

Is there any solution, specifically for Debian? GRUB reinstallation from install cd, didn't worked as well. Since I couldn't boot at all, I restored GRUB1 and I'm posting from Lenny, but I can't access Squeeze this way (probably because I have squeeze's partition, ext4 formatted).
View 5 Replies View RelatedI decided it was time to reinstall Windows 7 because it became increasingly slow. I know that there's a different solution to solve this problem, but as a user I'm just more satisfied with the noob friendliness of Windows. However, I know that it has its drawbacks so I had a dual boot setup with Wubi (30GB). My old configuration was as follows:
C: partition of size ~80GB with Windows 7 x64 installed
D: partition of size ~400GB with data and a wubi ubuntu at D:/ubuntu
So what I did was this:
- Backup all my personal files and D:/ubuntu on a external hdd
- Wipe the partitions using the windows installer
- Create a C: of 100GB and a D: of 380GB
- install windows 7 x64 on the C: partition
Now I would like to restore my backup of the old D:/ubuntu to a working dual boot system. I realize I may have missed some opportunities and the data may be gone, but I only found out about that when it was too late. I have tried installing wubi, and replacing the new ubuntu folder with the old one, but this did not work.

I have also tried replacing only the root.disk file, with the same result. I searched for other people's solutions, but they did not seem to work in my case.
I recently (for about the third time) HAD to re-install Windows 7. It just wouldn't boot and unfortunately I have some proprietary software that I need to use. Anyway, this is the first time I've had to do so since installing Lucid (64bit, fresh install). My problem now is, when I re-installed Grub2 (using the same methods that have previously worked flawlessly) to recover it after re-installing windows, only windows shows up in the grub menu, showing options to boot to Windows on sda1 and another to boot to Windows on sda2.
I grabed a "boot info script" from Rubi1200 and this is what I got..

Partition table entries are not in disk order So, I didn't want to do anything and screw things up. I want to boot with grub and not MBR. What should I do?
i initilally installed ubuntu 9.10 then installed windows 7 ,then i recovered grub2 using livecd as told in the post [URL] i did "sudo update-grub" and got windows 7 menu entry but when i select that entry windows 7 does not load but the grub2 is reloaded again.
i cant boot to windows 7.
Windows 7 have 100 mb partition "System Reserved" the grub2 points to that partition but still windows 7 not loaded.

They are mixed up in both the grub2 boot and the Kubuntu login.I tried running sudo update-grub within Kubuntu but that didn't change the screens. How do I restore the default (elegant) Kubuntu splash screens?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot system. I need dual boot as my dictation software is only available for Windows. In the future I am going to try a virtual machine, but dictation and audio did not work properly the last time I tried in VM. But unfortunately for now I have a dual boot machine with Vista and Debian 6. Unfortunately, I am going to have to reinstall Vista. Or to be more accurate I'm going to install the 64-bit version instead of the 32 bit that came with the computer. I have the 64-bit version that I no longer use from one of my other computers.
Anyway, I have to install Windows which will overwrite my grub2. Is there anyway I can make a backup or reinstall grub2 after I install Windows. I really don't want to reinstall Debian 6 squeeze. Can they make some sort of a backup of gurb2 before I do this. I checked out the Internet and I found something called Super Grub2. It apparently will allow me to boot back into Debain 6 so that I can install grub2 again. Assuming, Super Grub2 even works then how do I reinstall grub2 once a boot into Debian 6? Has anybody tried Super grub2, does it work? It's kind of hard to test it, with a working version of grub2.
My Mini13 came with hardy preloaded, and it's got pretty messed up since, so I'd like to restore factory OS via a grub entry that looks like this:

Last week, something I did blew away my Windows boot partition and, until Dell shipped me the installation disk (why didn't they send it with the machine? That's another issue.) I was forced to work from the Ubuntu live disk. After using

so i've just installed Burg loader in a PC which dual-booted Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 with no problem using grub2 in the past. But after i installed burg it just boots up straight into the Windows OS and Ubuntu is nowhere to be found. Is there a way to restore grub2 preferably without having to lose any files?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am actually facing a vague problem here. I was previously running Windows XP and Ubuntu . Ubuntu was installed Windows XP The problem is
1. First I tried to do some disk partitioning. That ended up with some error.
2. Ignoring that, I went to install Windows 7 over Windows XP but I was not able to proceed with Windows 7 , because the partitions were corrupted.
3. So I used Ubuntu LIVE CD (Grub was lost at this point )and used 'testdisk' and recovered the partitions.
4. Now installed the Windows 7 successfully.
5. Now again I moved to Ubuntu Live CD to write the GRUB. After which I tried restarting
6. Now Ubuntu is booting perfectly as before. But the problem is with Windows
7. The GRUB loader instead of showing Windows 7, it shows Windows XP !!! . and there is no other entry for windows. When I tried opening it, it says "error, cant read file" and further inout moves back to the grub loader list again.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI want to reinstall windows to its partition on my computer, but I want to be able to restore grub2 afterwards. I use a lot of custom scripts in the /etc/grub.d/ directory on my ubuntu partition, so how can I reinstall grub to the MBR using those specific scripts? Just running "sudo install-grub" or "sudo update-grub" doesn't work for me (I don't know the exact problems, but I can't reproduce it right now). If there's a way to install just the defaults (without overriding my custom scripts!) maybe I can just do that, but I'd really like to put the live cd, run a few commands, and install those custom scripts to the mbr and be on my way.

I have the recovery disk that HP sent me and I have tried Virtual Box and no luck, so just to avoid any problems I would like to spilt the partitions and set up the grub bootloader so I can have Ubuntu and Windows as a choice a start up.

I have installed OpenSUSE 11.4 with GNOME and it works perfect. But when i tried to uninstall Mozilla Firefox with other Mozilla adds, it began to uninstall all default gnome apps. And my GNOME menu and desk was empty. I tried to set back apps and to install again Mozilla stuff with other GNOME apps, so some apps has restored but main menu has half apps not like default. But after restart OS startet with IceWM, not with GNOME at all... So how to restore GNOME default mode without reinstalling OpenSUSE?
View 4 Replies View RelatedThis is closely related to a recent thread of mine that I unfortunately marked as solved prematurely. I'll try to keep it brief this time. After editing partitions I was left with a boot problem, namely "error: no such partition" and I am dropped at the 'grub rescue>' prompt. I can issue the appropriate grub commands and successfully boot the current kernel. Once booted, I executed 'sudo update-grub' and then /boot/grub/grub.cfg was rewritten with all drive and partition references correct. Likewise, /etc/fstab is also correct.
The problem comes when I attempt to reboot. I still get the 'no such partition' message and the 'set' command reveals that grub is still trying to reference the old partition. I've never encountered this problem before under similar circumstances. I'm guessing that this info must be stored in the disk's MBR as well as in grub.cfg because that file looks completely correct. Am I going to have to reinstall grub now?
i have windows xp and federo installed on my system on seperate partition and using grub loader for dual boot. Unfortunately am unable to boot the windows and it hangs with the blue screen and with safe mode it stops at mup.sys and doesnt proceed further.I tried booting with a windows xp CD but it looks like it is unable to recognize the disk even if i say boot with a CD in BIOS settings. Does anybody knows how to make the CD recognizable so that i can go into the windows repair mode.

After have the gui completly f***d up with an upgrade that messed up kde, I'm about to restore the original kde from the installation dvd (11.1) but there is no particular options to only restore kde, so I have concerns concerning some of those applications compiled and installed after the original installation (two years backward). I also updated the kernel to make things work with vmware...I don't want to loose time to recompile all the different stuff I need to work with linux.
Is there a way to be sure (by renaming /usr /bin /sbin for example) to keep the kernel alive (with libraries and headers) and all applications that were working very good before I did this update for kde (I won't do this again trust me)?The kde group never told me how restore kde from the original dvd so I'm a little disappointed because the system is working ok in run level 3.only kde is dead.I'll dig deeper before doing the reinstallation of suse 11.1...

So, I had to reinstall Windows XP since my previous installation gave me a blue screen error due to reasons unfathomable. Naturally, this deleted the GNU Grub and I could not login to my Fedora.
I read that apparently booting from a DVD installation offers an option to enter the rescue mode. I did not have a DVD, I only had the LiveCD so I had to figure out a way to reinstall Grub from the LiveCD. The following method seemed to do the trick.
Run the LiveCD and open Terminal.
