Sep 19, 2010is it possible to install with just the very min of things, no GUI, etc so I can use it as a compact OS for an old Pentium2 system with a 10 GB hard drive? May 2, 2010I upgraded to 10.4 on Friday and everything seemed to go flawlessly. I had installed Netbook launcher about a month ago and decided I didn't like it, so yesterday I uninstantiated it. Now when I boot up using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx I get this error

I get the same result if I click "no" or "yes" the boot finishes and every thing seems to work....except the drop-down menus are missing on the panel on the right. So every thing on the left is there I.E. im connected to my router but i cant get to Fire Fox right or left clicking on the panel wont let me at to the panel so how do i get my panel back?Oh and the bottom panel is gone too. not really sure this is an upgrade problem but the timing was suspicious.

Aug 13, 2010We are using several printers on our Linux RH network to print customer invoices and receipts. Receipts are short forms of just 21 or 22 lines. Two of the printers (an HP LJ1300 and a Dell 5200) eject the receipt paper automatically; the other two HP (a LJ 4200 and a LJ2420) do not eject. You have to press the green button on the printer. Is there a solution to that? They are all set up with the same PCL settings.

Feb 11, 2010Karmic - When I start up and log in, a window for KDE Desktop Sharing Invitation automatically pops up.
Closing it doesn't prevent it from popping up on next startup.
There doesn't appear to be any option to "Don't show on startup."
When I go to System -> System Settings -> Advanced -> Autostart, it does not appear under Desktop File. The only thing that appears under "Script File" is gtk-2-engines-qtcurve.rc.sh gtk2engines... which does not appear to be the issue.
I'm guessing there's a shell command that will give me a more in-depth look at what should and should not run upon startup? Would really like to startup with a clean screen!
Ubuntu :: Remove Mysql From Startup?
May 22, 2010I have installed mysql server on my Ubuntu Lucid AMD64 desktop. I need to run this service only on need. So I prefer not to have this in startup. So I did the following -
1. Deactivated the row entry by name "mysql" from application BootUp-Manager.
2. Run the application sysv-rc-conf and unchecked the checkboxes for all run levels.
3. Run the command "sudo update-rc.d -f mysql remove". Execution completed successfully.
4. Run the command - "sudo service mysql stop". In return I got a message "mysql stop/waiting".
5. Restarted the desktop.
Now when I read through the task manager, I still see a process by name "mysqld" running. I ran the command as mentioned in # 4 above and got the same response. I wanted to know how do I turn off mysql service running from startup permanently. But I still need to run it as and when required.
Ubuntu :: Remove Application From The Startup
Jan 13, 2011I am running Unbuntu 10.10 on a HTPC, and also XBMC. With some effort it worked ok, sounds, remote etc. Via systems>preferences I managed to add XBMC to the startup. It now starts when I start the PC. However it sort-of hijacks the PC, so the WiFi does not start among other things. Also I am no longer able to log into the desktop, so I am not able to emove XBMC from the start-up of the computer. If I exit XBMC I get to the log-in screen for the desktop, but when I log in it starts XBMC directly.
How can I remove it via the terminal? I cannot find a .config directory, any autostart, any .xsession, .xinitrc or anything else that looks like startup-script. How can I get access to my desktop again?
Ubuntu :: Empathy Has No Menu Bar On Startup
Jan 23, 2010I have Empathy set to start when I login, and when I turn off my computer, it is always still running. I also usually have Evolution, Liferea, and Rhythmbox running. All of these applications usually work fine the next day when I turn on my computer. However, for the last few days, Empathy has been starting without a menu bar. In one instance, Rhythmbox was also menubar-less. Now, Empathy is always without a menu bar. If I ever need the menu bar, I have to restart Empathy. Can anyone tell me why this is happening? I am unable to provide a terminal output since this application starts up with my computer. I have provided a screenshot of Empathy. I think I have a faint idea of why Empathy is without a menu bar. I read something somewhere about an XML file that contained the menu bar contents. I think that since I shut off my computer without closing these applications, that file has been corrupted. I have no idea why everything works fine once I restart Empathy, though. If you cannot answer this question, perhaps you could tell me if it is safe to shutdown Ubuntu with applications still running. In OS X, it will automatically tell your applications to quit safely, then turn of the computer. I hope Ubuntu doesn't just force quit any open applications. I am using Ubuntu 9.04 32 bit with the latest updates. I am using Empathy 2.26.1.

May 21, 2010I just fresh-install upgraded from Jaunty Jackalope to Lucid Lynx, on my dual-boot netbook. Now, the startup menu does appear when I boot up, but only for a fraction of a second! Default bootup is of course, Ubuntu, but since the menu flashes by so fast, there's no way I can access the other choices, including Windoze Expee.So I installed Startup Manager, and set the timeout to 10 seconds. (And to "show text during boot".) Still, the startup menu flashed by, no delay at all, not even a second! Tried setting timeout to 100 seconds, and once more,(Examining grub.cfg shows the timeout was changed to my specs...I just viewed the file.)I searched for bootup problems in ubuntu forums, but did not find any problem similar to mine. My situation seems to be that I simply can't get the startup menu to delay, so I might access it.

May 21, 2011I'm running maverick netbook remix on an asus1015pe eeepc. I recently switched from the unity interface to "ubuntu netbook 2d" - the one they say resembles the 10.04 netbook interface. I really like it - fast, crisp, and intuitive - but there's one thing I'd like to change, if possible. Right after login, there's a full-screen translucent menu that covers the 1st workspace. If I wait a few seconds, I can make it go away by clicking the "desktop" button in the bottom left, but is there any way to make it so it doesn't appear at all? so that after login it goes right to a clean desktop.

Jul 6, 2010How do I remove that annoying drum sound from the login screen.I went to PREFERENCES -> LOGIN SCREEN, but there are no tabs or boxes for sound. Only options to determine who I want to log in.I tried GCONF-EDITOR, and drilled down to /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/settings-manager-plugins/sound/active and unchecked the active box, rebooted, but it still plays that stupid sound. And the box is unchecked if I check it! I've tried the solutions in the forum and nothing seems to kill that annoying sound.I'm still on 9.10 right now, since 10.04 has a nasty screen flicker problem.

May 19, 2011Somehow the -D option got tacked on to my sshd when I start up. How do I remove the -D option when sshd is started at boot? I'm guessing I need to edit something in /etc/init.d but not sure what. I checked System->Preferences->Startup Applications and the ssh server daemon isn't listed there. And since it is a command line option /etc/ssh/sshd_config is of no help.

I added the increase_resolution.sh to my startup menu but I guess I don't know the command to MAKE it start at startup. (That is what "command" means in the "Edit startup program" menu, correct?) If I go into usr/local/bin and click run it works, but if I can execute it automatically, that would be great.
Also, I have added an account(?) for my daughter and when she is finished and I try to log her out the display goes nuts and does not correct itself. I assume it has to do with this since when I restart the machine (and the script isn't running) the picture is fine again. Is there a conflict between the two accounts and this script? I'm sorry if this is not making sense, I know what I want to say, but don't have the lingo/jargon down.

It has been working up till now.The computer was moved when I was gone, and now at start up I get two alarm beeps from the motherboard speaker, no grub menu (hidden line is commented out and time out is gtr than 0).In the past I had to lock the kernel to 2.6.32-28.55.newer kernels broke the interface...although prolly foolioshly, I did allow other system updates.

Nov 28, 2010Okay, two packages in question here: sshd and xrdp.
In the /etc/rc.d/rc5.d directory there is a K??sshd link, I'm not really sure why the default is to kill sshd in graphical mode, but it's there. I saw it coincidentally when I went to add an S??xrdp link so that I could have xrdp run when the computer starts. I restarted the computer, and of course, couldn't connect via my Windows Remote Desktop client. A quick ps -e | grep xrdp in a terminal window showed me that xrdp had not, in fact, started.
I hop back in to ??/rc5.d to see if I messed up creating my link and poof. there's no more S??xrdp link, furthermore, the K??sshd link that I had removed was back.
Okay, so Fedora doesn't like you messing with the init links manually... I can dig it, cause there's this nifty gui tool to manage startup items... I go in to that and add entries for sshd and xrdp, calling them via their init scripts so I can make sure everything plays nicely... then restart.
Oh, wait, still no xrdp or sshd running.
If I manually start these servers using their init scripts from a terminal they run fine, no issues, but I don't want to do that, and I think we can all agree that I should't have to. What am I doing wrong? What is the 'proper' way to add servers to the startup process and since entering runlevel 5 apparently kills sshd, how do I prevent that?
