OpenSUSE Install :: Remove Whole Partitions Entries?
Oct 15, 2010I have to hide Unix partitions to succeed in installing Linux and the winner is Ubuntu 10.10! I had to remove whole partitions entries. DOS based primary/logical partitions are now called (hd0,msdos1), (hd0,msdos2), etc. And BSD slices would have been (hd0, bsd1) (hd0,bsd2). I guess I saw those names during installation. update-grub failed in three attempts in a row on 2 machines (32 and 64 bit). Everything went fine after I removed the Unix partitions (which are going to be restored by openSUSE legacy Grub)

May 26, 2011The only MS program I need on my computer is Word 2007 for the equation editor to write/edit files from work. So after installing Wine I installed MSOffice2007. Excel worked OK (although I don't need it - I am perfectly happy with the Libre Office spreadsheet). Word however froze each time so I tried to uninstall and reinstall it. However I always got an error message when trying to uninstall with Wine. So I followed the advice of some strands in this forum and deleted the Program Files folder from the ~.wine directory. However the menus are still in Wine/Programs/Microsoft Office even though they lead to nowhere. I tried to reinstall but still I nothing happened. I presume the old entries still lead to the position where previously the .exe files were located. Now my question is either how can I remove these menu entries and try installing again - or even better - is there a Linux programme that can read/edit the equations written in Word 2007?

Ubuntu :: Remove Entries From Xfrun4
May 26, 2011In Xubuntu, the xfrun4 dialog (alt + F2) doesn't have auto-completion for every command, only for those commands successfully called at some previous point in time. My question is: where are these entries located, and how can I remove some of them?
I'm just curious because I'd like to keep my entries uncluttered. I was experimenting earlier to see whether xfrun4 would retain an invalid command, so I tried the inexistent (so I thought) command "terminal", but lo and behold, it opened a new tab in Firefox and brought me to www.terminal.com. Now I have the useless command "terminal" saved in xfrun4, and I'd like to get rid of it.

I'd want to get:
LIBS='-lpq -lmysqlclient -lssl -lpthread -lresolv'
Bear in mind that LIBS can be variable, I mean I need to drop any duplicate and only retain the last one of each different entry. And we must keep the order as is, I must not sort out them.
So, if LIBS is:
LIBS='-lpq -lmysqlclient -lpthread -lresolv -lpthread -lresolv'
I need: LIBS='-lpq -lmysqlclient -lpthread -lresolv'
Fedora :: Automatically Remove The GRUB Entries?

I have searched everywhere: manpages, internets, forums, can't find anything related.
Here's the situation: I installed Avant Window Navigator and it naturally created entries in gconf-editor for interface, applets etc. The thing is that when I uninstalled it the entries are still there, and yes I have deleted the corresponding folders in home/.gconf/apps. Also did a search of my filesystem for awn, avant widow navigator, avant-window-navigator etc and nothing came up. Looked in /etc, nothing. Looked in /etc/gconf, also nothing.

I'm trying to sort this file numerically and weed out any duplicate IP addresses. How do I do this on bash? I have come up with this but obviously it does'nt work.

I was checking out both NTFS CONFIGURATION TOOL and MOUNTMANAGER. I Removed MOUNTMANAGER but the multiple listings remain? I would like to have the ability to Mount and Unmount any drive from the File Manager except ARCHIVE this drive I need to mount as Ubuntu Boots up.

Jun 6, 2010I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 dual booted with Windows XP. Ever since I installed 9.10, I get a long list of OS's (actually, multiple repeats of what appears to be the same Ubuntu install), and I can't get rid of them.I've looked through various tutorials and the GRUB 2 Community documentation (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2) but I still can't get rid of the menu items.I edited the 40_custom file and was able to add the entries I wanted to see, and then chmoded 644 all the other files in the /etc/grub.d directory and run update-grub.The custom entries do appear at the end of the menu now, but the old entries are still there as well. This is what I get when I run the update-grub:

Dec 14, 2010Theres two main things im trying to remove. First, Wine which I need to keep, has about 15 different entries which I want to remove. Second I installed OpenMPT, a music tracking program through Wine. This added about 10 duplicate open with entries.. I uninstalled OpenMPT, because I decided I didnt want it, but all the entries remain.
When I highlight one of the entries, the remove button is still disabled. Its disabled for Wine, OpenMPT, and every other program in the list.
How can I remove these?
Fedora :: Add / Remove Startup Items?
Nov 28, 2010Okay, two packages in question here: sshd and xrdp.
In the /etc/rc.d/rc5.d directory there is a K??sshd link, I'm not really sure why the default is to kill sshd in graphical mode, but it's there. I saw it coincidentally when I went to add an S??xrdp link so that I could have xrdp run when the computer starts. I restarted the computer, and of course, couldn't connect via my Windows Remote Desktop client. A quick ps -e | grep xrdp in a terminal window showed me that xrdp had not, in fact, started.
I hop back in to ??/rc5.d to see if I messed up creating my link and poof. there's no more S??xrdp link, furthermore, the K??sshd link that I had removed was back.
Okay, so Fedora doesn't like you messing with the init links manually... I can dig it, cause there's this nifty gui tool to manage startup items... I go in to that and add entries for sshd and xrdp, calling them via their init scripts so I can make sure everything plays nicely... then restart.
Oh, wait, still no xrdp or sshd running.
If I manually start these servers using their init scripts from a terminal they run fine, no issues, but I don't want to do that, and I think we can all agree that I should't have to. What am I doing wrong? What is the 'proper' way to add servers to the startup process and since entering runlevel 5 apparently kills sshd, how do I prevent that?

Feb 11, 2010Karmic - When I start up and log in, a window for KDE Desktop Sharing Invitation automatically pops up.
Closing it doesn't prevent it from popping up on next startup.
There doesn't appear to be any option to "Don't show on startup."
When I go to System -> System Settings -> Advanced -> Autostart, it does not appear under Desktop File. The only thing that appears under "Script File" is gtk-2-engines-qtcurve.rc.sh gtk2engines... which does not appear to be the issue.
I'm guessing there's a shell command that will give me a more in-depth look at what should and should not run upon startup? Would really like to startup with a clean screen!
Ubuntu :: Remove Mysql From Startup?
May 22, 2010I have installed mysql server on my Ubuntu Lucid AMD64 desktop. I need to run this service only on need. So I prefer not to have this in startup. So I did the following -
1. Deactivated the row entry by name "mysql" from application BootUp-Manager.
2. Run the application sysv-rc-conf and unchecked the checkboxes for all run levels.
3. Run the command "sudo update-rc.d -f mysql remove". Execution completed successfully.
4. Run the command - "sudo service mysql stop". In return I got a message "mysql stop/waiting".
5. Restarted the desktop.
Now when I read through the task manager, I still see a process by name "mysqld" running. I ran the command as mentioned in # 4 above and got the same response. I wanted to know how do I turn off mysql service running from startup permanently. But I still need to run it as and when required.

Jan 13, 2011I am running Unbuntu 10.10 on a HTPC, and also XBMC. With some effort it worked ok, sounds, remote etc. Via systems>preferences I managed to add XBMC to the startup. It now starts when I start the PC. However it sort-of hijacks the PC, so the WiFi does not start among other things. Also I am no longer able to log into the desktop, so I am not able to emove XBMC from the start-up of the computer. If I exit XBMC I get to the log-in screen for the desktop, but when I log in it starts XBMC directly.
How can I remove it via the terminal? I cannot find a .config directory, any autostart, any .xsession, .xinitrc or anything else that looks like startup-script. How can I get access to my desktop again?
