View 9 Replies View RelatedMain desktop upgrade no problem. Laptop upgrade no problem. With my Media machine I had a problem the the ATI build-in graphics hardware. During install it did not ask to remove the ATI driver. no graphical UI. Since all the data where backed up anyway and the original install lacked some partitioning, I did a fresh install. Had some problems with sound, which I could fix via the KDE multimedia "phonon".

I've been googling about the possibilities, but still I'm not sure which would actually work in my case. I've seen VMWare ESXi which looks ok, but unfortunatelly it is meant for servers and I can't have ESXI and Sphere client on same laptop. Another candidate I found is KVM, but as much I've seen it requires VTx VTd support from hardware, which my laptop can't provide. The same requirements must be met for Citrix Xen Client, which is meant for desktop virtualizations, but because of lack of VTx and VTd, can't be used in my case. Is there any other possibility? Currently I'm using VirtualBox and VMWare player for virtualization purposes, but I would like to pull out more performance out of it, and a heavy OS on top of another heavy OS just isn't the best way.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to get SELinux working in OpenSUSE 11.2. So far I can get to runlevel 3 with enforcing=0. Before I start tinkering with audit2allow, The 11.2 repository gives me these policy rpms:

But that version of policy has some issues in OpenSUSE:
1) failure to allow the graphical desktop to load (even with enforcing=0) . The following message appears in the console during boot:
** (gdm:1073): WARNING **: Couldn't connect to system bus: A SELinux policy prevents this sender from sending this message to this recipient (rejected message had sender "(unset)" interface "org.freedesktop.DBus" member "Hello" erro name "(unset)" destination "org.freedesktop.DBus") startproc: exit status of parent of /usr/sbin/gdm: 1 Since enforcing is off, I'm surprised to see a message like that. SELinux shouldn't be preventing anything, so I don't see how modifying policy will solve that. Ideas?
2) Attempting to boot to runlevel 5 with kernel parms "security=selinux selinux=1 enforcing=0", I'm dropped off in runlevel 3 instead. I'm getting a couple of pages of AVC errors after boot (see below). I've tried several other versions of the policy without luck:
- the version included in Fedora 12 (refpolicy-2.2009117
- the latest release from Tresys
- the latest from the repository at Tresys

The Disk Usage Analuser application in GNOME (baobab) only displays directories, not files. I think this is a huge deficiency that greatly reduces it's usefulness. Can anyone recommend an application (preferably GNOME/GTK) that's capable of providing a graphical break down of disk usage for the contents of a user's home directory with both directories and files sorted by the amount of space they take up? Like ncdu but with a GUI.

For PCLOS I use an On-Disk set of disks which I have installed on a separate hard disk which serves as a repository from Synaptic, which makes program install/remove very quick. Is it possible to do the same thing with the 5 DVD's for Debian lenny on another hard disk?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed CentOS with KDE and Gnome. the computer starts with a console instead of a window manager. When I try to start Gnome (using either startx or gdm), it freezes the whole computer. I can't even get to another command prompt using Control+Alt+F2, when I try to start Gnome.
After rebooting I tried starting KDE using the kdm command, but it prints out some error messages and logs me out of my session. (I've never seen a program force a log out of a session before! I thought that was strange.) I tried to record the errors by using the command "kdm > errors.log" and "kdm >> errors.log", but nothing is written to the errors.log file.
Also, under the (likely?) case that this problem is caused by the graphics card, I ran lspci and discovered that this computer contains this graphics card: VGA Compatible Controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 04)
Where's the Testing Desktop Install CD? As I look at the Debian site the only choices I see are the massive full disk set, or the net-install CD's (url). The last time I tried to use the net-install method I got complex warning messages that a different kernel was installed--along with cryptic instructions I didn't understand. So where did the single CD, Desktop install disk go for testing?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI had just upgraded when after the first reboot I noticed that the black Ubuntu screen (with the little red/white dots) is actually white and buggy. It's unreadable and looks trashed.
After the first login, the desktop wasn't able to load properly, leaving me with a blinking, unresponsive icons and no menubars.
The only way to use the desktop environment is to choose Ubuntu Classic (both with and without effects) and Ubuntu Safe Mode.
I do have nvidia drivers installed (173).
I am in the process of creating a kickstart configuration file for some RedHat 5.5 and Centos 5.5 servers (Production and test respectively).I have googled about a bit but I cannot find a good list of the bare minimum packages required for a command-line system.If anyone knows how I can trim this list down anymore it would be much appreciated. The aim of this kickstart.cfg is to get the system booted to a bare minimum required to install Chef (Server management software). Chef will then setup Apache, Ruby on rails environment etc.
All this server will need to do is, from a static IP, Host a Ruby on rails app, send emails, send data to a server on the web, accept ssh and occasionally and connect to a SMB/CIFS share This list was taken from the anaconda-ks.cfg file after a RedHat install of what I thought was a pretty minimal system onto a VM but I noticed that cups, the avahi daemonsand gam_server are installed and running which I do not believe are needed for a pure web server.I know that these types of questions are hard to answer without a complete knowledge of the operating environment and what "minimum" is in this case ("@core only? but I wanted yum damnit!")

It seems I will need to request using apt in the shell the Squeeze package firmware-linux-nonfree. I am not familiar with configuring apt from the command line. Can anyone just tell me what I need? (I have many other things I am trying to learn today, so RTFM would not be helpful in this instance.) I am hoping apt will be autoconfigured well enough to get the deb if I simply give the command. I want to ensure before trying to get apt to install debs over the internet that the key-signing and package verification is working. I hope that all is done automatically by the installer, but does anyone know with certainty? I stress that (as I understand things) checking the GPG signature of a signed deb is different from and complementary with checking the integrity hash; both verifications are crucially important. The reason I ask is that at least under oldstable (Lenny) there was a separate debsig package, which seems to imply that apt does not automatically acquire the ability to check the GPG signature of signed debs.
Someone said that in addition to non-free drivers I might need to obtain firmware. I have never been able to do this successfully, probably because hardware sites assume Windows users and I don't use Windows at all.
I've put a fresh install of Fedora 13 x86_64 on my new server and I have it automatically log in to the gnome desktop so I can control it via VNC. However this only happens when there is a monitor physically connected when the computer boots. If there is no monitor present at boot time, there is no graphical session started, however I want it to start whether or not a monitor is present.
My hardware is a Zotac IONITX-G-E board (which has an Atom N330 and a NVidia ion chipset of some description). I'm using the Fedora default graphics driver (nouveau). Why doesn't it start a graphical session with no monitor, and is there any way to get Fedora to start one whether or not there is a monitor connected?

And I have the blue background of Kubuntu. What do I need to do to get rid of the Kubuntu graphics and back to my original login screen, plus the Ubuntu (karmic) graphics and toolbars / menus?

I have installed Ubuntu desktop on Ubuntu Server to get Boinc manager running. Now I want to remove Ubuntu-desktop.
Second Problem: /etc/init.d/xorg start : No such file or directory When the server boots i get a blinking cursor.
I managed to have the ATI Catalyst driver (10.12) installed on a machine with F14 x86_64, Radeon HD 57xx and I also installed the ATI SDK Samples for OpenCL. ATI Catalyst reports OpenGL fine, glxinfo is fine, all OpenCL samples that do not use OpenGL are working fine. I used the "install to hard drive" feature of the F14 x86_64 desktop disk. Problem: which headers and libraries do I need to install in order to use OpenGL in an application? I would also like to have the OpenCL working on the system for another application.
Previously I had a small application working with SDL + Mesa library on FC9 using software rendering, but after F14 installation and ATI card addition the app is not working. Files gl.h, glu.h are missing. I checked the system and I found only a glew.h header. I tried linking against glew but it complains about glu.h (file not found).
I looked on the Internet and I found a post that someone suggested installing xorg-x11-devel, but there is no such package. I tried installing libX11-devel...f1.x86_64 but the gl.h/glu.h were still missing. I tried compiling the latest Mesa library with make linux-dri-x86_64 and it complains about egl. All dependencies have been checked (dri2proto, X11 version, libdrm, kernel version). After Mesa installation ATI Catalyst is no longer reporting OpenGL and glxinfo is not working. Am I supposed to install just the Mesa library without the ATI driver? Am I supposed to use glew only with the ATI driver?
Is there a way in SuSE 11.1 to have the conventional desktop, instead the plasma desktop? I thought that installing KDE 3.5 will fix it, but I was wrong. I really don't want to download back SuSE 11.0, just to have my old desktop layout. SuSE developers should at least leave it as an option than to force people to install it
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to switch from debian to fedora (13) and I'm stuck at getting yum to remove leave dependencies.
So far I've installed "yum-plugin-remove-with-leaves" and I'm able to remove leave dependencies if I invoke yum with the "--remove-leaves" argument from command line.
But this doesn't work with graphical front ends and I want to remove unused leave dependencies every time if I remove a package not just if I remember to invoke yum with the "--remove-leaves" argument.
Later on I discovered an option in "/etc/yum/pluginconf.d/remove-with-leaves.conf" named "remove_always = 1" and uncommented it. But yum doesn't seem to care. I still need to add the "--remove-leaves" argument otherwise yum isn't going to remove the leave dependencies.
How to configure yum to handle dependencies the way I used to know from apt under debian? Install a package with a graphical front end and dependencies get pulled in as needed. Uninstall a package later on and dependencies installed in the first place are removed as well if not needed by anything installed in between.
I need to build openSuSE with the bare essentials + X. I want no-fluff + KDE 3.5-Desktop (no extras).
Is there a way to do this manually ? Any other options ? Widdling away at RPMs just got me a broken VM so I'll skip trying that again.
I recently found an awful lot of junk files in my home directory, mostly in directories that start with a dot e.g. /home/my home/.mozilla So I did cd du -chs .??* and found 3.5 GB. After pruning, I find < 250 MB of files that I have knowingly created.What is happening is that I installed some programs, say xyz , tried them out and decided they were unsatisfactory, deleted them. The un-installer for xyz deletes the actual program but meanwhile xyz has installed lots of config files or status files in /home/my home/.xyz and the un-installer does not delete these. View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been using Redhat/Fedora for 11 years. I don't understand why Fedora 11, can't even do a vga graphical install, when Windows can.
I tried many parameters, including xdriver=vesa, and it cannot used graphical install.
So, I tried text install, which I have done many times in the past.
However, F11 seems crippled, in that it will NOT do the same install achievable from a graphical install.
It will NOT allow the use of fdisk, and it will NOT allow any selection of any packages.
What is the point of this option?
Even after trying all of this, for a dual boot install, and F11 claims to have installed, there is no grub or equivalent, and the computer just boots windows, just like Fedora 11 did absolutely nothing.
What are the options now? Why is text install so crippled and incomplete? Why is standard VGA mode so hard?
