I'm having a little problem because I've installed xampp, but can't start it because it seems there's already an apache installation in my ubuntu
I've confirmed this by browsing to http://127.0.0.1 , and by doing px ax | grep apache

Now I'd like to know how to stop this apache, remove from startup, and uninstall safely so I use xampp's apache instead.
as much as i am one for saving space and throwing out the trash. now my problem is the fact that I DO NOT WANT THIS program (localepurge) running on my system. i look and did everything i could. note : i am a noobie. when i config the program from the start i told it NO don't delete anything. and now that i have done some reading i do not want it working period. i could not find a way to disable or uninstall localepurge.
View 4 Replies View Related I added XScreenSaver 5.08 to her applications list. We've had issues with XScreenSaver and want to either disable or uninstall the application. We cannot figure out how to disable XScreensaver and revert to the original screensaver app that came with the system. When I use Snaptics Package Manager to either 'completely' uninstall', or just 'uninstall' the message says that I will uninstall the 'desktop'.
Does this mean I will uninstall only the desktop version of XScreenSaver applilcation? Or, does this mean I will uninstall the system desktop (in this case Xfce)? I'm a little hesitant to punch the button in case I blow off Xfce desktop! Our goal is to either disable or uninstall XScreenSaver 5.08. Then be able to use the screensaver that came with the system.
On one of my server plymouth is consuming a lot of memory.I want to disable it.I tried uninstalling but then it gave me a message like this

I have been trying to remove Platinum arts sandbox game making program for a while now. I have tried using the terminal command: sudo apt-get remove dpkg
But I keep getting an error message:
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock -open (11: resource Temporarily Disable)
E: Unable to unlock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
Then I typed: /var/lib/dpkg/lock -open
Then I got the following message:
bash: /var/lib/dpkg/lock: permission denied
What does all of this mean? How come this file is locked and requires admin permission?
I'm trying to remove brscan that I had installed for my old scanner , but I get this message , any ideas how to remove brscan ? I tried the package manager, now it is stuck , I can't uncheck it ,can't reinstall it , can't install anything else because of this

I then used a conkyrc that I found on an internet tutorial. It seemed to run okay but it was very ugly so I tweaked a few variables. However, after doing so, I couldn't get conky to work again. So, just to see if it was the variables that I set which could have broke it, I changed the conkyrc file back to that ugly one which worked before. I then tried to run conky again and this time it didn't work either.
I then decided to remove conky in an effort to reinstall the conky, this time just conky as opposed to conky-all. I used:

Thinking that I had successfully removed conky, I did another apt-get to install conky. When I couldn;t get that one to work, I tried to remove it. However, this time I decided to check and see if it was actually removed, by using:

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 and I just recently installed a LAMP server for some minor local web development.
Used the sudo tasksel command to install lamp but I can't get phpmyadmin to work nor can I access mysql.
removing the LAMP and starting all over again.
How do I go about this?
1) Check if MySql is installed and running
2) How can I connect to create my db. (I want to do it from CLI not using an admin tool)
3) And if I have problems how can I make a clean uninstall/remove.
I was making some tests and I could see that ubuntu software management systems doesn't delete user data when uninstalling applications, only the binary packages.
e.g. reinstalling Thunderbird won't delete the email accounts info.
When Ubuntu Software Centre removes software, it leaves files behind in File System which is owned by Root preventing me from deleting them.
1. Could this be why Update Manager is insisting that I install updates for software that I have removed and do not use?
2. There is one application I would like to re-install because it asked me technical questions before I installed it. I think I gave the wrong answer and when I re-installed it, it didn't ask the question again. It seems likely that there is a file somewhere that Ubuntu Software Centre didn't remove, and I could do with deleting but is owned by Root. How do I do this?
3. Should I have posted this query under 'Absolute Beginner Talk?'. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx.
There's a single command to achieve this result? I want those (never and not willing to use in future) features to be completly remove from all my systems (*buntu).

I am trying to streamline a desktop install into a more streamlined server-esk install. I have edited the inittab to change the runlevel at startup to 3. How do I now remove KDE completely? Also are there any other large programs I need to uninstall?

I want to disable the graphical desktop automatically starting up at boot. I want it to boot only to terminal. I don't want to remove it completely and still want to be able to start it up with for example "startx" if I need it.

Pidgin auto starts with the computer, I've closed out of it and killed the process and restarted to make sure it wasn't saving the session, it still starts, theres no option in any of the settings for pidgin to turn it off, is there a way to?

I recently made the switch from gnome to kde. After struggling for two straight days I finally have everything the way I want, and I must say that I am quite pleased with Kde. The one thing I want to do now is get my computer to start up without running printer applets and bluetooth and all that other stuff I don't need. I have had little luck finding any info on this one.

The only problem is that I want to keep ubuntu-desktop, but that I don't want to boot into the (memory consuming) graphical interface by default.Does anyone know how to do that? I have an old Linksys WUSB54G USB wireless card lying around, and occasionally I like to use it as an access point for my laptop. For assigning IP addresses I use dhcp3-server. The only problem is that the server attempts to start itself up on boot, which I do not want- I want to start it up manually if I need it. how to disable this service on boot?

After which some 5 applications incl. firefox and someothers running then start everytime i boot the computer.
Its annoyance increases day by day as it makes startup slow.
I could not find a file in which this information(Apps to startup) is written.I checked /etc/runlevels/default after some googling , but cant find anything interesting there , at last gave up
