Software :: Amarok Shutdowns In Kubuntu 10.10
Feb 19, 2011When using Amarok in Kubuntu 10.10, the player will shut down after no specific reason. Sometimes if saving a playlist and sometimes when the player changes from one track to another. I presume this is a bug but sadly i do not have regular access to the internet so my system is sometimes up to a month old but no more.
Has anyone experienced similar performance when using Amarok with Kubuntu?

May 14, 2010I have tried linux before but I never found one that suited me. I'm now trying kubuntu 10.04 on my mini laptop but I have run into a problem. I have sounds when the computer start and shutdown and other sounds like incoming mail and stuff just not in amarok or any other media player at all nor on ..... and I've been googling it for the last few days and have found others with simular problems but none running Kubuntu 10.04 so I figured I'd give the solutions they got a try but I just can't get them to work on my computer. Might be my lack of linux skill so please go eazy on me and yes I have checked that the audio is not muted. Which codec pack to be installed and how to do it.

Dec 14, 2010I've spoken to people on the KDE forum about this but am a bit stumped. They advised me to change the phonon backend of Amarok from xine to phonon-backend-gstreamer or phonon-backend-vlc. The latter doesn't seem to be in the repositaries though someone on the KDE forum said otherwise. When I change to gstreamer, Amarok says it cannot play mp3 files. Apparently Kubuntu 10.04's Amarok is a bit old too but I can't see how to update it - does this involve adding a ppa or something?
I've added two other database-type players, Exaile and Rhythmbox, both designed of course for other desktop environments, but they both give gripes about codecs too or won't play. The xine backend causes jumps in playback mentioned in another post.
I have installed the Kubuntu restricted extras, and I even added w32codecs and nonfreecodecs at one point, now removed (--purged). I don't fancy moving to 10.10 as I like the 3 years of not messing about upgrading/reinstalling. I would ideally update just Amarok and KDE itself.

Ubuntu :: Amarok Upgrade - Export Lyrics From Amarok 1.4 And Import Them In Amarok 2?
May 17, 2010For the last few releases, I've remained with Amarok 1.4, but now that I've deemed Amarok 2 stable enough, I've upgrade, however, the lyrics to my songs (which I put in a lot of effort in downloading), are not reflecting. Is there anyway to export lyrics from Amarok 1.4 and import them in Amarok 2?

Oct 29, 2009Playing around with 11.2 RC2 since a few hours. This is my first encounter with Amarok 2. Still trying to find everything I used in Amarok 1. But one thing annoyes me.
Right in the middle of the window is a panel for which I see no use. I found I could remove the things that are in there, but now there is a text that orders me to push the + and to add things (never in my ...). I managed to move the borders at the left/right of it to make it smaller, but still a piece of annoying, space taking, part of the panel is there.
Did anyone succeed in removing it completely and does she/he want to share the howto with me?

Ubuntu :: GUI Doesn't Always Start On Startup (Kubuntu)
Mar 13, 2010A lot of times when I start up my computer, instead of the graphical login screen I'm brought to a CLI login. If I log in and do "startx," it'll start KDE, but sound doesn't work and the shutdown/restart options disappear. (The logout option is still there.) It's inconsistent; sometimes it'll start the GUI and sometimes it won't. I have yet to find out what causes it to work right and what causes it to bring me to the CLI. When it doesn't work, if I run "shutdown -r now" or "shutdown -h now," it'll start the GUI as the computer is shutting down. I've tried Ctrl+Alt+F7 when it's brought me to the CLI, but it didn't do anything

In KDE, I can navigate to Settings > System Settings > Appearance > Splash Screen but that's not what i'm looking for. I'm not trying to change KDE's Splash Screen that shows when you load the KDE window manager after logging in as a user. Further, I'm not trying to change grub's boot splash image, which renders this guide useless.
I want to change the boot splash theme which lasts 25 seconds that is shown between the time your select the kernel in grub2 and the time gdm loads. Right now it says "Kubuntu" in an ugly way and I want to change it back to what it was originally before I installed KDE. I want it to say "Ubuntu" as it should by default.

Jul 10, 2010I added Kubuntu-Desktop components to my Ubuntu 10.04 system using Synaptic Pkg Mgr, with the mistaken expectation that I would then be able to toggle between Ubuntu and Kubuntu Desktops. Of course, when adding Kubuntu-Desktop components, the dependencies feature brought in around 8 or 10 items.
I tried to undo all of this, but I fear I may have removed one or two Kubuntu named packages which may be part of the original Ubuntu installation.
Also there remains a gaggle of applications, such as Dolphin, KNetwork Mgr, Konqueror, just to name a few.
The two-fold question is, (1) How can I get back as closely as possible, to my original, pure Ubuntu installation, short of a complete re-install; and (2) Is there a document out there which lists all of the packages that come standard with the Ubuntu installation.

Jul 19, 2010I wanted to update my NVIDIA Drivers from the default to 256 (or whatever the latest is on their site). After the upgrade from their site and installing it through a command line, I've had trouble. For some reason, whenever I boot, I get the Kubuntu boot screen, even though I run plain Ubuntu. Also, after I boot it defaults to low graphics mode, and I have to hit "restart X" to make it run normal. Even then, visual effects won't enable, and games won't run, because apparently the "hardware device cannot be found". My attempts to revert back to old drivers have been unsuccessful; It says it's running the recommended right now, but I still have all these problems.

Feb 11, 2010Karmic - When I start up and log in, a window for KDE Desktop Sharing Invitation automatically pops up.
Closing it doesn't prevent it from popping up on next startup.
There doesn't appear to be any option to "Don't show on startup."
When I go to System -> System Settings -> Advanced -> Autostart, it does not appear under Desktop File. The only thing that appears under "Script File" is gtk-2-engines-qtcurve.rc.sh gtk2engines... which does not appear to be the issue.
I'm guessing there's a shell command that will give me a more in-depth look at what should and should not run upon startup? Would really like to startup with a clean screen!

May 22, 2010I have installed mysql server on my Ubuntu Lucid AMD64 desktop. I need to run this service only on need. So I prefer not to have this in startup. So I did the following -
1. Deactivated the row entry by name "mysql" from application BootUp-Manager.
2. Run the application sysv-rc-conf and unchecked the checkboxes for all run levels.
3. Run the command "sudo update-rc.d -f mysql remove". Execution completed successfully.
4. Run the command - "sudo service mysql stop". In return I got a message "mysql stop/waiting".
5. Restarted the desktop.
Now when I read through the task manager, I still see a process by name "mysqld" running. I ran the command as mentioned in # 4 above and got the same response. I wanted to know how do I turn off mysql service running from startup permanently. But I still need to run it as and when required.

Jan 13, 2011I am running Unbuntu 10.10 on a HTPC, and also XBMC. With some effort it worked ok, sounds, remote etc. Via systems>preferences I managed to add XBMC to the startup. It now starts when I start the PC. However it sort-of hijacks the PC, so the WiFi does not start among other things. Also I am no longer able to log into the desktop, so I am not able to emove XBMC from the start-up of the computer. If I exit XBMC I get to the log-in screen for the desktop, but when I log in it starts XBMC directly.
How can I remove it via the terminal? I cannot find a .config directory, any autostart, any .xsession, .xinitrc or anything else that looks like startup-script. How can I get access to my desktop again?

Jan 21, 2010I'm unable to change startup programs. If I try and add or remove a program, any changes I have made seem to undo themselves. I suspect it might have something to do with being unable to save the session, but I really don't have a clue.

Only options to determine who I want to log in.I tried GCONF-EDITOR, and drilled down to /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/settings-manager-plugins/sound/active and unchecked the active box, rebooted, but it still plays that stupid sound. And the box is unchecked if I check it! I've tried the solutions in the forum and nothing seems to kill that annoying sound.I'm still on 9.10 right now, since 10.04 has a nasty screen flicker problem.

May 19, 2011Somehow the -D option got tacked on to my sshd when I start up. How do I remove the -D option when sshd is started at boot? I'm guessing I need to edit something in /etc/init.d but not sure what. I checked System->Preferences->Startup Applications and the ssh server daemon isn't listed there. And since it is a command line option /etc/ssh/sshd_config is of no help.

Nov 28, 2010Okay, two packages in question here: sshd and xrdp.
In the /etc/rc.d/rc5.d directory there is a K??sshd link, I'm not really sure why the default is to kill sshd in graphical mode, but it's there. I saw it coincidentally when I went to add an S??xrdp link so that I could have xrdp run when the computer starts. I restarted the computer, and of course, couldn't connect via my Windows Remote Desktop client. A quick ps -e | grep xrdp in a terminal window showed me that xrdp had not, in fact, started.
I hop back in to ??/rc5.d to see if I messed up creating my link and poof. there's no more S??xrdp link, furthermore, the K??sshd link that I had removed was back.
Okay, so Fedora doesn't like you messing with the init links manually... I can dig it, cause there's this nifty gui tool to manage startup items... I go in to that and add entries for sshd and xrdp, calling them via their init scripts so I can make sure everything plays nicely... then restart.
Oh, wait, still no xrdp or sshd running.
If I manually start these servers using their init scripts from a terminal they run fine, no issues, but I don't want to do that, and I think we can all agree that I should't have to. What am I doing wrong? What is the 'proper' way to add servers to the startup process and since entering runlevel 5 apparently kills sshd, how do I prevent that?
