Installed Ubuntu on a 40 GB partition side by side with Windows 7 currently installed. I have had this exact setup before. Problem, boot menu never shows. The system boots into Ubuntu automatically. Windows seems to be intact and accessible. How can I get the boot menu to appear at startup?
View 9 RepliesI just fresh-install upgraded from Jaunty Jackalope to Lucid Lynx, on my dual-boot netbook. Now, the startup menu does appear when I boot up, but only for a fraction of a second! Default bootup is of course, Ubuntu, but since the menu flashes by so fast, there's no way I can access the other choices, including Windoze Expee.So I installed Startup Manager, and set the timeout to 10 seconds. (And to "show text during boot".) Still, the startup menu flashed by, no delay at all, not even a second! Tried setting timeout to 100 seconds, and once more,(Examining grub.cfg shows the timeout was changed to my specs...I just viewed the file.)I searched for bootup problems in ubuntu forums, but did not find any problem similar to mine. My situation seems to be that I simply can't get the startup menu to delay, so I might access it.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running Lucid Lynx, which installed the Grub 2 Boot loader which it currently lists three different Linux kernels. My problem is this:
1. How do I edit the menu to either remove or comment out one or more of the kernels?
2. Can I remove any of the kernels I don't want, which files do I remove, and will doing so compromise my system.
Would like to eliminate from the Grub menu of startup options all but the latest kernel update? Have made some attempts, but don't have authority is the message.

What I want to do is simple boot into the first (and only) item without showing the menu to the user.
I have removed everything on the system so the only option is "GNU/Linux, with Linux 2.6.32-30-generic" in the menu.
My /etc/default/grub is like this:

I installed 11.04 after Windows 7. when the GRUB boot menu starts up there is an option for Win 7 boot but it will not boot windows. When that option is selected the screen changes colour for 2 seconds and then reverts to the GRUB menu. Ubuntu boots fine.I downloaded the Boot Info Script and ran it, the results are

I have a Computer, It came with Windows 7 64bit on it. I installed Ubuntu through WUBI. I used the Windows Disk Management program to resize my HDD. I shrunk the main drive and created a 20 gig free space. I installed WindowsXP on this 20g space. I had to change from AHCI to ATA. I started my new XP installation. As I should have expected my the screen that let me pick between Windows 7 and Ubuntu was gone, and it just said XP. Well thats cool. I get in XP use bcdeasy and use the install Win7 to mbr. So I restarted. Great I now I have Ubuntu and Win7... but no XP. So i think, okay, ill boot into Ubuntu, use the update grub command and XP will be there, so i do it and restart. No XP, So i try to boot into Win7 and see if i can do something in there.. No luck it says it can't boot and takes me to a startup recovery thing. Which, as Windows recovery things tend to do, doesn't find anything wrong. So I have Ubuntu now, which is great, but I do need Windows.
View 4 Replies View RelatedHave just installed 9.10, again, many failed attempts previously.Cannot get to boot up and show menu on dual boot with Vista initially,However when I delete the grubenv file the system boots ok and works fine.But does not show the grub menu to choose boot up choices.Got the information to delete the file on some posts elsewhere about booting problem, and tried a longshot and got into Ubuntu for the first time from trying to install now for 3 months!The problem is the file grubenv is created each time so on subsequent boot ups the sytem fails to boot again.The Grub version is 1.97 beta 4, most up to date for Karmic I think, I have seen a version 1.98 but dont think its for Karmic?

After quite a bit of troubleshooting, I have only made my problems dual booting XP and Xubuntu go from bad to worse.
I installed xubuntu on my Windows XP laptop as a dual boot system. (Single 40gb Hard Disk, used xubuntu wizard to repartition XP)
After installation, Windows XP would not boot from the boot menu; it would just go to a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner (xubuntu was fine).
So far, I have repair installed (not clean) Windows XP and used the Windows XP recovery console commands "fixboot" and "fixmbr" (fixmbr caused xubuntu to become unbootable with no boot menu) to no avail.

I'm trying to help my dad, who's recently got a computer that had Ubuntu 10.10 preinstalled. After some problems while I wasn't in a position to help out, I think a reinstallation is necessary. But when I make a USB drive to install it from, it only has .exe files, and nothing Ubuntu can use, so it doesn't boot on startup (even though it's set to boot from USB first) and it can't be run later either. This happens when I download the ISO from the main download page on the Ubuntu website, so is there a link to download one without Windows files?

When I rebooted again and paid more attention to the boot process, there was no GRUB menu (like the one I get when booting up my desktop).
The Windows partition has been resized, but I can't seem to get to the new Ubuntu partition.
I've finished the installation of Debian Squeeze using Installer loader from Windows. But the Installer menu is still appear on Windows Boot Manager.
I've try to uninstall the "Installer Loader" from Windows and I got an error message about BCDEDIT (if I'm not wrong), during uninstallation process.
I ignore it, and continue the uninstallation process until complete. But, After I reboot my computer, the Installer menu is still appear on Windows Boot Manager.
I'm using Windows Vista Business SP2.
I installed F14 from my usb according to the wiki page using unetbootin. The usb boots perfectly and i get a working F14 system. I partitioned my HD with gparted and got a /,/home and swap partition, then used the installer to install the system using them. The installer finishes without a problem and ask me to reboot. When I reboot , there is a blank black screen. No grub menu , no fedora loading. I reboot with the usb and the partitions are full with the files from F14 , there is no xorg.log in the /var/log/ so f14 doesn't even start so the problem seems to be with grub.
I check the grub.conf in /boot/ , i set the timeout to 5 secs , i check that the kernel is using nomodeset (according to this wiki page there is a problem with ati), xorg.conf is using vesa as a driver and I reinstall grub with grub-install with no problems.My notebook is a acer aspire 5552 , i don't think is a hardware problem because I've used arch and opensuse with no problems in it. Fedora seems a nice distro , but this error is preventing me from using it.
I installed Xubuntu 9.10 with Wubi and it worked fine until a recent kernel update broke my install. I uninstalled through Windows and reinstalled Xubuntu 9.10 with Wubi with no apparent problems.When I look in C:ubuntudisks, root.disk, swap.disk, and the boot folder are both present. The C:ubuntudisksootgrub folder is empty; I don't know whether or not it should be that way.But when my computer starts, it just boots Windows Vista without displaying the menu asking me to select my OS.

When I attempted to install 10.04 on my Toshiba A505-S6005 all appeared to go smoothly, but when the system rebooted the splash screen appeared only after a few seconds of a blinking cursor. The default desktop background appeared, and I heard the drumbeats that announce "Hello!" but there was no login menu.
Background: I have struggled to put linux on this laptop, but there have been many compatibility issues thus far. However, once I switched my hard drive controller to AHCI I was able to boot 10.04 live with no trouble.
On a regular boot I can login via Alt+Ctrl+F1, but even after I run "sudo apt-get upgrade" etc. the login fails to appear.
Furthermore, while poking around in Cli I noticed that my home folder more closely resembled the live environment (i.e, there was an examples.desktop file instead of the usual folders)
I have burned a new CD at a slower rate with a new iso, but this one yielded the same results as the first. Please help, I am currently using Win7, but I would much like to be back on Linux.
I have rebuilt my laptop to a dual boot of Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 - if only iTunes would work under wine I wouldn't even have to worry about Windows, but that is the penalty for using an Apple iPod!
Anyway how do I go about about editing the boot options menu? Following the kernel upgrade in the Ubuntu updates I now have two entries for Ubuntu and would like to just tidy it up.
If it is risky let me know because I have the systems working just nice, and really wouldn't want to trash them just for something cosmetic.
My system had Windows Vista initially. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit initially and everything was fine. I was able to use both the OS. Recently I installed Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit in the same partition as Ubuntu 10.04 by dividing it into two equal halves. Now I am able to boot into 32 bit 10.10 but when I try to boot into the old 64 bit 10.04 it says unable to mount /root/proc, and some other "Unable to mount.." messages and it gives me a command prompt. I entered into 32 bit 10.10 OS and did update-grub2 and when I restart, the boot menu has no option for 64 bit 10.04 version at all... How can I restore my Ubuntu 64 bit 10.04 and boot into it..

View 8 Replies View RelatedI just installed ubuntu 11.04 via wubi. the installation appears to have gone well but ubuntu doesnt appear as an OS choice when i boot up.
Its not a timeout issue as it is set to 30sec and i can see my other options (windows and a recovery option). the only thing i can think of is that my computer has a separate partition set up for recovery and i think that is screwing things up.
Here is my boot.ini:
My only guess is that since the recovery partition is the first partition that its causing problems.
I've installed 11.04 on my laptop (dual boot with Win7). It goes through the grub boot menu and boots in ubuntu but displays ~inch wide band near the top, nothing else. I assume it is a display issue (it has an ATI mobile Radeon HD 3870 X2 card) but can't seem to resolve problem. I can boot into Windows via the menu. In the grub menu I can boot into the command line (grub>) but can't seem to make progress beyond that. Within this grub interface, it won't take terminal commands.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI wanted to update my NVIDIA Drivers from the default to 256 (or whatever the latest is on their site). After the upgrade from their site and installing it through a command line, I've had trouble. For some reason, whenever I boot, I get the Kubuntu boot screen, even though I run plain Ubuntu. Also, after I boot it defaults to low graphics mode, and I have to hit "restart X" to make it run normal. Even then, visual effects won't enable, and games won't run, because apparently the "hardware device cannot be found". My attempts to revert back to old drivers have been unsuccessful; It says it's running the recommended right now, but I still have all these problems.

I had to reinstall Grub2 and run update-grub.
Then I had to run Rescue on my XP disk. Once to the DOS command line I ran the following command:
C:Windows>fixboot c:
I rebooted and now all is well. I can boot to Ubuntu 10.04 or Windows XP from my Grub menu.
I used to be a pro at editing Grub's menu.lst file so I could have my menu look clean, simple, and easy to read. Now that I have set up 10.04 (Working beautifully now after a couple setbacks) the menu.lst file is no longer where it used to be (/boot/grub/menu.lst)
How do I edit my boot menu now?
I have multiple drives on my system and I decided to put Ubuntu on my main 1TB hard drive. I install 9.10 on my drive and it partitions half of it to Ubuntu and install is successful. Well, on reboot I get nothing. I switch to my secondary drive with windows on it already and the dual boot menu appears? Apparently it installs in on SATA1 and not the drive selected as boot in the BIOS. I decided to leave it this way until recently I needed to use the secondary drive on my other rigs failing hard drive. So, how do I get grub on the 1TB hard drive? I ran windows 7 BOOTREC files and recovered the Windows boot, but I couldn't get Ubuntu to recover with live CD nor the GRUB online help didn't work. Is there a simple way to get my dual boot menu back?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my main box to Ubuntu 10.04 and everything runs fine, except for a problem with grub: I can't modify the boot menu in any way, I'm stuck with what grub2 thought was the optimal setup at installation time (and it got it wrong, btw). The current boot menu lists:
- my older 9.10 install in sdb2 (one kernel)
- legacy windows XP install on sda1
- my even older 9.04 install in sdb1 (two kernel versions)
- my new install in sdb3, with only one kernel (the one coming with the distro CD)
I tried anything I could think of to modify this menu:
- modify the /etc grub config file then running sudo update-grub
- using a specific app (system manager? don't remember its name)
- upgrading to the latest kernel
- removing and reinstalling grub
to no avail: the menu is still there in the above form, and I have to manually select the 10.04 (old) kernel by hand every time I reboot.
Using StartupManager (as Quackers had suggested) I do indeed have Windows as my default boot, although it appears at the bottom of the menu. See Dilemma 1 below for that detail.
Dilemma 1:Grub2 has set up the boot menu so that Windows is the last item on the menu. This is because the Menuitem entries for the Ubuntu kernels are generated by script 10_linux, while the Windows Menuitem entry is generated by script 30_os-prober. Of course, in generating /boot/grub/grub.cfg, the 10_linux script is executed before 30_os-prober, dictating the order of their appearance on the menu.
I'd like to see Windows as the top menu item. Under grub, I would edit /boot/grub/menu.lst, pull the Windows menu item out of the "Automagical" section and voila! It stays on top no matter how many times I upgrade the kernel. While I could possibly do the same with /boot/grub/grub.cfg (see thread "how can I change the order of the boot menu?" for the suggestion) we should all know by now that the next time I update the kernel, my changes will all go away, because we are not supposed to edit that file by hand.
Dilemma 2: As I download and install kernel updates, all the old kernels still show up on my boot menu. My concern is that eventually the sheer number of Linux kernels will render the boot menu unreadable. This is especially of concern if I cannot get Windows to the top of the boot menu. Under grub, I used to edit the menu.lst and comment out the listing of any kernels more than 2 versions old. Now, how do I arrange this omission? A manual edit of 10_linux will be acceptable, provided it still displays the 2 or 3 most recent Linux kernels and their corresponding memtests.
