View 4 RepliesI have a Natty installation that I just did yesterday on my personal PC. I am not home currently, but I can access my router (uses DD-WRT), and my Media Center Machine (Ubuntu 10.10) via SSH. For some reason, when I rebooted my router via SSH my personal PC (with Natty) did not renew an IP.Is there a way I can use magic packets or any other method from my other Ubuntu machine that I have remote access to, to force that other machine to renew it's IP?
View 1 Replies View RelatedLet me reassume what I just did, because it will be easier for you to understand my problem. Today I played a bit with my Ubuntu (10.04, latest kernel) because I wanted to try xmms. I tried to install it manually, but since i couldn't make some libraries work I went for

I don't know where something went wrong, but when i rebooted my GUI disappeared. I'm stuck in login screen with nothing in there. I tried to do this [URL].... , but it doesn't work (if i'm not wrong those folders are inside /home, so after login I have to do [cd ..] and then using the rm command) I tried also pkill gnome-panel before coming back to desktop, but it doesn't work either. I tried to
Code: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop but it says I've got the latest one already installed.
I have an old PC (130mb RAM, 6gb hard drive).
I installed a command-line version of Ubuntu 10.04 using the Alternate CD. The machine was wiped, and I used most of the default settings.
I used a thirteen character user id which consisted of mixed case letters and numbers, and an eighteen character password that contains mixed case letters and numbers and a # sign.
When I rebooted, the command-line login would not accept my password. I assumed I had somehow made a mistake, and just wiped the machine again and reinstalled. This time I was very careful with the user name/pw.
Again, the command-line login did not accept my password!
On a hunch, I took an old Ubuntu 7.10 Alternate CD and erased the machine again. I installed a command-line version of Ubuntu. AGAIN --- it will not accept my password even though I'm 100% sure it is correct.
Now i will try to explain my problem.I just installed fresh 11.04 openSuSe 64bit.After doing all the configuration I rebooted and tried to login.Nothing happened.Googled some things, tried ctrl alt f1 and login as root, also tried to login as root, even changed my root password to be sure.Still, nothing happens, except for the thing that everytime I try to login as root it says authentication failed, but if i type my password bad it says bad password.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI found a problem where I least expected it. I cannot use skype on my ubuntu hardy. I install it without a problem, but when I try to login it says: login failed, multiple instances may exist.
After some googleing and several different installations I am still no closer to finding out what is wrong.
If there is anyone with the solution please let me know, and if you need any extra info or command output I will send them asap.

I can log in using a key I have put in my authorized_keys file when logging in from my LAN.
I can log in using password when I am logging in from WAN.
I cannot log in using the same key when logging in from WAN.
I am going through a DD-WRT router with UPnP disabled and the appropriate port forwarded to the server IP address.
Do I have a config file issue?
I want to write a function in expect/tcl which logins into a router. but the syntax is a little confusing .
case 1: router prompts for "username".. {we put in username and password .. if they are incorrect we try with another username and password. if we succeed into getting a prompt we return 1 .. if both username passwords are wrong or we time out we return 0 }
case 2: router prompts for "login" .. {we put in username and password .. if they are incorrect we try with another username and password. if we succeed into getting a prompt we return 1 .. if both username passwords are wrong or we time out we return 0 }
case 3: router prompts for "password" only .. { we login just using the password and get to the enable prompt}
I have just setup a debian box, and I want to be able to login to the machine remotely.Currently I have the following setup:Cable Modem -> Netgear Router (DHCP to outside world) -> Debian Box (DHCP for internal network)As I under stand it I have to set my Debian Box to use a static IP, but from there I di not know where to go.Also since my cable modem IP is dynamic, is there some way to have that the debian box get the IP address for the outside world, and e-mail it to my gmail account when it changes, or least every X hours?
View 1 Replies View RelatedIn addition to 2 "desktop" machines, I recently set up an Ubuntu Server with Apache2, but when I try to access my www.homepage from a machine locally connected to the same router (via both wired & wireless interfaces), I am directed to the Login page of the router, not to the www.homepage. Yet, when I access the www.homepage from elsewhere, my www.homepage is accessible.
I can browse to my www.homepage by entering the local IP address into browsers on both local machines, so I know the machines are talking to each other. Just not letting me get in via normal internet browsing channels.

Webserver: Apache2

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a IOgear USB bluetooth adapter and a Sony DRBT101/BLK bluetooth headphones to use with my computer.Whenever I try to make a call using these headphones with skype, I can speak for say 10 seconds and then the headset disconnects completely from the system. I then have to reconnect the headset by switching it off and on. I do not have this problem listening to music using A2DP. It works fine with my mobile phone.When I change the profile to Telephony Duplex (HSP/HFP), it shows up as hands free, I thought it should be headset in blueman manager. My friend uses Plantronics headset with is Dell laptop with built in bluetooth and he says his comes up as headset not hands free. Could this be causing the problem?

I do have a very current backup of /home
I don't have a backup of any configuration files (/etc/conf and so on?)
I think that I will have to overwrite the whole installation and then restore my /home directory, which will mean tweaking all my software installations again?
Is this my best plan of action?

I recently had to rebuild my computer with a new HDD and decided to load the new Ubuntu 10.04 which seems to work great. I was in the middle of downloading packages from the Ubuntu Software Center when the computer decided to reboot in the middle of downloading 6 packages. I went to the Synaptic Package Manager and it said to run "sudo dpkg --configure -a Here is what I got when I did that. What do I do next to fix and continue downloading the corrupted packages?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 10.10 with all updates, and I have a 1tb external hhd I had a 850gb true-crypt file on the external hhd, I had to reboot the computer. whenever I reboot the computer I always dismount the true-crypt drive, and when I logged back into my computer the true-crypt file on my external hhd is gone and it shows the extra free space as well,
I have not done any writing to the external hhd so I am hoping the file "should" be recoverable. I don't know any really easy and good data recovery tools for Ubutnu, It would be easier for me if their is a gui program, I can manage using the terminal.
I installed Ubuntu 11.04 and then I installed WICD using Synaptic and then uninstalled Network Manager. WICD worked fine until I rebooted. Then I could not connect at all. Wicd displayed the wireless lans and even authenticated OK. But wicd was not able to obtain an IP address.
