I am currently reading a book about Linux commands. There is an example which shows how to print all installed packages. But on my PC is shows northing:
rpm -qa
I know it is supposed to print a long list of all installed packages. I tried to re-install rpm from the synaptic, but still it shows no output.
I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit today and I installed Adobe Air with no problems. I then installed the Pandora Desktop application and that installed fine as well. After the installation I saw a "do not enter" style sign in my status bar on the desktop. When I hover over it it's telling me an application has a broken installation. When I go into Synaptic and filter for broken I see "com.pandora.desktop.fb9956fd96e03239939108614098a d95535ee674.1" is showing broken. The description is just <> <>. Both Adobe Air and Pandora are working fine, and I'd be happy to ignore this warning except it's going to break my updating because it throws a warning every time.
Does anyone know how I can see what is apparently broken with the install or how I can suppress this message? I had the same versions of software running on 10.04 just fine before I formatted, and I'm the only person on the internet with this problem so far.I've gone over dependencies several time and don't see anything missing. I've tried reinstalling both apps several times. I don't know why this is even showing in Synaptic, since it's a sub app of Air...
In synaptic package manager when I expand "Details" tab (at the time when some software is installed or removed), I can see a terminal. I want to capture the output of terminal into a file. I tried to highlight and right click. But there is no context menu(copy, cut)

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading our vmware template server from debian wheezy to debian jessie the output of the df command seems broken with regards to the root and /usr mount.We are using LVM on this machine.I've been searching for quite some time for a solution, but lack of linux knowledge is bothering me to get it fixed. The system seems to run fine without issues.
I can temporarily resolve the issue (untill next boot) by doing a lazy umount and a new mount of for example the /usr.I found a thread that something has changed in the way df presents the devices, however it is not consistent in our case (it shows a mix of both) and it seems to go wrong at an earlier stage during boot.Either show all dm devices or mapper devices is fine with me although I have a slight preference for the mapper names as it makes it more obvious LVM is being used.

I recently tried out recordMyDesktop (not the GTK+ frontend, just the CLI program, I wanted to Keep It Simple this time ), and found that the videos it records/encodes show massive motion-smearing artifacts when played back. This is without the "--on-the-fly-encoding" option; with it, the video looks fine (i.e. has no artifacts other than the typical ones found in any compressed video), but it plays back too quickly (the time-step between frames is too high, thus making everything go too fast when the video is played back, even though the frame rate is low). Here's a screenshot of the video playing, showing what the artifacts look like (they're nasty!).
I've searched Google and LQ about this problem to no avail: either there were no relevant results, or it was just a post on a different forum asking basically the same question, but with no answer. So apparently this problem is either really rare, or it's something specific to my configuration, and mine alone (highly unlikely).

I've tried different options, such as --quick-subsampling, as well as tweaking the video quality and bitrate settings (--v_quality and --v_bitrate), all of which did nothing to change/get rid of the artifacts.
I have a fresh install of Natty and i'm having some issues getting sound to work. My laptop has a built in sound card which works just fine. However, i also have a usb 5.1 sound card which isn't working at all. Both devices show up in 'Sound Preferences' but when i select the 5.1 device as the output device sound doesnt work. I ran the alsa-info.sh script and the output can be found here.

In a moment of temporary insanity I tried to install Backuppc using the synaptic package manager, but started to panic when the installer tried to set up an Apache web server on my PC (which I do not want). At that point I tried to cancel the installation, but got an error message. I then marked the package for complete removal in the package manager, but every time I click the apply I get an error message, "E: backuppc: subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 2" and the package, which did not install correctly in the first place, refuses to go. When I ran the update manager today, to install the latest updates, the manager tried to continue with the Apache installation stage of the Backuppc installation. How do I get rid of it?

Managed to get the desktop of the ubuntu 10.04 onto my windows xp workstation. But, I tried to run for example synaptic this way, but this seems not to be possible, think due to root rights needed. How to handle this? Is it possible to run synaptic via remote desktop and install programs?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI wonder if i can install packages that already exist in local directory using synaptic for example: I downloaded a set of programs with there dependencies and stored them in whatever folder, and i'd reinstalled my distro and i need to install just google chrome browser for instance, it's will be very difficult to install it among other packages. it will be very useful if i forced synaptic to install chrome locally instead of downloading and installing them from the internet.

However, whenever i then go to system -> preference -> appearance ->effects and select anything other than none, it seems to turn of metacity and give me this "Your window manager does not support the show desktop button, or you are not running a window manager." then i click the "no i don't want to keep these settings" and it goes back. The windows have borders with the buttons again. also after installing ccsm i start it from system -> preferences and nothing happens. it just loads a while then stops.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSomething that really irritates me in Ubuntu is the way these programs are being installed, because it takes disk space I don't have.In windows I can put all the files in the same folder and even choose where to install the stuff, but from synaptic in ubuntu all the game file are being installed in 100 different folders. games are huge and the more you build them up and save (maps, savefiles etc) the more disk space will be used (obviously).When I had windows I used a USB stick to save my current game on to and simply removed it them when I was ready for the next game.Because, usually I don't finish more than 1, 2 or 3 games at the same time.
Now, in linux most of the games are open source and are therefor always out with new versions or maps and other extras. This makes the game folders bigger.Another problem I see with the linux way of installing games is that when I once in awhile take a iso backup using Remastersys, it goes way above the top limit (4gb or something).I mean that we can't install the things wherever we want. I mean the programs are not a big deal because they are small, but games are huge and bigger the more you add to them.
I attempted to install openemr which was taking its sweet time to install it was most of the way through but I had to leave so I left my computer running. Computer when I came back was asleep I started back up and tried installing something from software manager and I got this message from it:
E: I wasn't able to locate file for the openemr package. This might mean you need to manually fix this package.: I tried fixing from synaptic but even synaptic is complaining.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I have manually removed Canonicals version of coreutils (7.4-2ubuntu2) and installed the latest official version of coreutils (8.9). Synaptic is still registering Canonicals version as being installed. how I can force remove the entry so it shows it as not being installed? I'm guessing there will be a file some where..

If i try to open the software-center the cursor changes but it does not open. This all started when it upgraded to Karmic Koala. There might be two seperate issues but i cannot install or uninstall at all.
Whenever i goto Ubuntu Software Center and find a program there is no install button. In Synaptic I can only find programs that have been installed.
