Debian :: Glxgears Shows Very Poor Performance With Ati Radeon 1300?
Mar 31, 2011I have an ATI Radeon x1300 graphic card on an Intel platform.Since the last reinstall my Debian Squeeze system shows very poor performance in glxgears,only 80-90 FPS. Last time I had a problem the kms setting in the kernel. I disabled the modding setting in GRUB and then glxgears showed about 900-1300 FPS. Now,the problem is back, even though I made the same setting in the boot loader.

May 8, 2011I have a fresh install of Natty and i'm having some issues getting sound to work. My laptop has a built in sound card which works just fine. However, i also have a usb 5.1 sound card which isn't working at all. Both devices show up in 'Sound Preferences' but when i select the 5.1 device as the output device sound doesnt work. I ran the alsa-info.sh script and the output can be found here.

I've been struggling with this for months now and I've tried some many things, I've forgotten half of them!
Basically, 11.04 picks up my card fine using the open xorg driver. I've got compize desktop effects (wobbly windows) but I can't play any HD video as it stutters and is completely unwatchable.
So to do any video editing, I have to boot into my Windows 7 install where the performance is considerably better.
Now then, I once managed to get a glxgears frame rate of 11,000 before I broke my install and had to re-install. Now I can't get above 300fps

Aug 27, 2010Several days ago, I replace my PC's motherboard and now sound is too low - I can't hear practically anything, I used alsamixer to configure output volume level to normal, but this won't survive reboot.
I tried to use 'alsactl' and saveed rules, and edited rc.local to restore - but it didn't help. Can anyone tell me how to fix it?
Software :: ImageMagick's Convert Utility And High Quality Output?
Jun 22, 2011I am trying to split a PDF into component pages that are of equal quality to the original. If I use display mypdf.pdf, then the PDF is split into pages of acceptable quality. The problem here is that I have to save each page individually. If, however, I use convert mypdf.pdf mypdf.bmp, I get the individual pages of the PDF in .BMP format (which is fine, but not exactly what I want), but the quality is substantially less than the original. I've tried dozens of combinations of commands to try to increase this quality, but to no avail.
Even if I do convert mypdf.pdf mypdfagain.pdf, there is a big loss of quality. Anyone familiar with splitting a PDF into individual pages without suffering a loss in quality?
Ideally, I would just save all the "scenes/frames" from display, but that feature unfortunately does not exist (though I may endeavor myself to add it if no formal solution exists).
NOTE: I think part of my problem might be: by using identify mypdf.pdf I can see that the resolution is specified, and when I convert it the resolution is much lower. This could be a source of quality loss, but I'm not familiar enough with image conversion to say that for sure. Whatever this command does, it removes the extra layer or whatever it is that prevents OCR from succeeding. I'd really like to understand that technology.. What is it about a PDF that allows an individual to embed some meta-data into every page of the PDF so that the only thing seen, say, through OCR, or a text search function, is the embedded text?
Ubuntu :: Re-install Rpm From The Synaptic But Still It Shows No Output?

I know it is supposed to print a long list of all installed packages. I tried to re-install rpm from the synaptic, but still it shows no output.
Debian Configuration :: Df Output Shows Mixed Dm-X
Jun 25, 2015After upgrading our vmware template server from debian wheezy to debian jessie the output of the df command seems broken with regards to the root and /usr mount.We are using LVM on this machine.I've been searching for quite some time for a solution, but lack of linux knowledge is bothering me to get it fixed. The system seems to run fine without issues.
I can temporarily resolve the issue (untill next boot) by doing a lazy umount and a new mount of for example the /usr.I found a thread that something has changed in the way df presents the devices, however it is not consistent in our case (it shows a mix of both) and it seems to go wrong at an earlier stage during boot.Either show all dm devices or mapper devices is fine with me although I have a slight preference for the mapper names as it makes it more obvious LVM is being used.

Oct 21, 2010I recently tried out recordMyDesktop (not the GTK+ frontend, just the CLI program, I wanted to Keep It Simple this time ), and found that the videos it records/encodes show massive motion-smearing artifacts when played back. This is without the "--on-the-fly-encoding" option; with it, the video looks fine (i.e. has no artifacts other than the typical ones found in any compressed video), but it plays back too quickly (the time-step between frames is too high, thus making everything go too fast when the video is played back, even though the frame rate is low). Here's a screenshot of the video playing, showing what the artifacts look like (they're nasty!).
I've searched Google and LQ about this problem to no avail: either there were no relevant results, or it was just a post on a different forum asking basically the same question, but with no answer. So apparently this problem is either really rare, or it's something specific to my configuration, and mine alone (highly unlikely).
System specs:
CPU: Intel� Core� i5 430M @ 2.27 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce� 310M w/ 512 MiB VRAM
RAM: 4 GiB

I've tried different options, such as --quick-subsampling, as well as tweaking the video quality and bitrate settings (--v_quality and --v_bitrate), all of which did nothing to change/get rid of the artifacts.

Radeon HD 5770 1gb
Ubuntu 10.4 LTS, latest proprietary drivers.
On GLXGears, I only get 12k fps. This seems very low, especially considering the fact that my Acer Aspire One laptop gets 1-5k scores on a POS Intel GMA 950.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Very High CPU Use When Playing HD Video
Mar 7, 2010When i try to play HD (even with 720p) video the CPU load is almost 100%. I'm using vlc player and the movie is barely watchable. If i switch to Movie Player, the CPU load is slightly decreased, but after 2-3 minutes the audio goes out of sync, so no solution there. I have an nvidia 8600gt graphics card and the proper driver installed, every compiz effect works flawlessly without the slightest increase in CPU load and a dual core 2,1 GHz AMD processor. It shouldn't be a hardware issue.

No linux sound drivers on Asus' site. No ubuntu 9.10 drivers on VIA site. Low sound with default drivers. I've edited /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf with options snd-hda-intel model=3stack, but no luck. I actually had to do a sudo sh then edit it that way with vi because it was read only. Didn't do anything.

Jun 30, 2010OSS, even though it's emulated *through* ALSA, consumes a microscopic fraction of straight ALSA's CPU usage. For example, when I'm playing something through ALSA with XMMS2, I'm getting about 25-30% CPU usage, but with OSS output, only 2%, tops. The same applies to any other application in which I can choose the output method. And, I'm on 10.04.

I tried Ubuntu and now Fedora and I'm having the same problem..The pc is fast in anything except videos (like megavideo)..running glxgears the pc starts slowing down as when i watch videos. What can I do? try another distribution? try something else?

Mar 25, 2011I'm using OpenSuse 11.4, and I was wondering if anyone else has noticed consistent high CPU utilization with banshee? By high CPU use I mean, when the application is running (whether it's idle, playing music, or scanning) CPU use on my machine is almost consistently at 100% (one core pegged).
Scanning my music library took hours ... like 3-4 hours to scan 9500 songs, and banshee was the only application running on my machine.
Rhythymbox doesn't suffer the same fate, scanning the same library took 5 minutes and CPU busy is less than 2% when it's running or playing music.
I'm running banshee 1.9.3, and I'd rather use it vs Rhythmbox.
CentOS 5 :: Glxgears Crash After Upgrade From 5.2 To 5.4
Oct 25, 2009My exercise below is to check if glxgears crashes xorg of CentOS5.4 with Intel GM965 Chipset. Apparently I don't have luck in this case. Since the exercise failed, it means I will still stick to CentOS 5.2 (residing on a different partition) for a while, even though CentOS5.2 crashes glxgears too. After "yum upgrade" (done after moving all repos in /etc/yum.repos.d to elsewhere except CentOS-Base.repo and CentOS-Media.repo), I ran glxgears that consistently crashes CentOS5.2 xorg, an issue that upset me quite a bit.
During upgrade, I saw a line "grubby fatal error : unable to find a suitable template". I guess the my grub.conf is too confusing for the installer, but that is not big deal, I just used the kernel number 2.6.18-164 where it is applicable. Even this this new update, glxgears still crash the xorg (the screen froze and then a new login screen reappears). With this I am sure the 3D application might still crash the xorg from time to time. (I can still revert to CentOS5.2 with a tar file, but I am still thinking to just upgrade to Centos5.3 but I don't know how.)

The video plays but it keeps chopping up and you can see on some frames how the next frame moves on the bottom of the screen and the previous frame is still stuck on the top. Flash does not run smoothly at all - that is on every video. I am suppose to be on the latest flash version for linux off of addobe.

May 14, 2010I hooked up Lucid to a 50" and adjusted the resolution to the max. Gives a clearer sharper picture but all the displayed items are tiny. Is there something I need to do that I haven't? I went from 1086x720 to 1400(approx)x900(approx) and created the problem. Now I'm back at 1086x720. I'm using the Nvidia 195 drivers.
