Debian :: Where Are Programs Install Through Synaptic
May 28, 2015I've installed two emulators, one for Nintendo 64 and GameBoy Advance, but I couldn't find the program after it installed. I have also installed NES emulator, but it could be found by searching its name in the Menu. I'm sure I haven't selected to only download the package and not install it.

Dec 16, 2010I have a laptop on a wireless network in a apartment building, but the server is in the manager's office, the signal is real good. I also have a desktop with no wireless or wired connection. My question is how do I transfer my apps from my laptop to my desktop in offline mode?
I don't want to install a wireless card for my desktop. Is there a way to install synaptic while offline? Or is there a way to install these apps from a flash drive to my desktop, if so how would I do that?

Jan 5, 2010In a moment of temporary insanity I tried to install Backuppc using the synaptic package manager, but started to panic when the installer tried to set up an Apache web server on my PC (which I do not want). At that point I tried to cancel the installation, but got an error message. I then marked the package for complete removal in the package manager, but every time I click the apply I get an error message, "E: backuppc: subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 2" and the package, which did not install correctly in the first place, refuses to go. When I ran the update manager today, to install the latest updates, the manager tried to continue with the Apache installation stage of the Backuppc installation. How do I get rid of it?

However, whenever i then go to system -> preference -> appearance ->effects and select anything other than none, it seems to turn of metacity and give me this "Your window manager does not support the show desktop button, or you are not running a window manager." then i click the "no i don't want to keep these settings" and it goes back. The windows have borders with the buttons again. also after installing ccsm i start it from system -> preferences and nothing happens. it just loads a while then stops.

Dec 10, 2010Something that really irritates me in Ubuntu is the way these programs are being installed, because it takes disk space I don't have.In windows I can put all the files in the same folder and even choose where to install the stuff, but from synaptic in ubuntu all the game file are being installed in 100 different folders. games are huge and the more you build them up and save (maps, savefiles etc) the more disk space will be used (obviously).When I had windows I used a USB stick to save my current game on to and simply removed it them when I was ready for the next game.Because, usually I don't finish more than 1, 2 or 3 games at the same time.
Now, in linux most of the games are open source and are therefor always out with new versions or maps and other extras. This makes the game folders bigger.Another problem I see with the linux way of installing games is that when I once in awhile take a iso backup using Remastersys, it goes way above the top limit (4gb or something).I mean that we can't install the things wherever we want. I mean the programs are not a big deal because they are small, but games are huge and bigger the more you add to them.

May 29, 2010Ubuntu 10.01 Lucid I had a few problems with applications failing to install properly with Synaptic Package Manager which resulted in a slew of launchers in my Applications > Other folder which all delivered error messages. These all had some kind of grey screen icon. I deleted them after uninstalling the applications which failed to install (wine 1.2, wine-gecko 1.2, then later wine 1.0, Wine-gecko 1.0, and winetricks.) I didn't notice that some non-wine applications also were given the grey-screen icon, and accidentally deleted "Archive Mounter." I know that I only deleted the launcher not the application, but don't know how to re-create the launcher in the Applications menu. Would someone...
1 - Right-click on the Applications panel,
2 - Select Edit Menus
3 - Find "Archive Mounter" (probably in "Other" folder)
4 - Select Properties for the launcher, look at the Properties sheet and tell me what the Archive Mounter command is, so I can re-create the launcher manually? And if you could, the path to the icon too
