Ubuntu :: Cannot Make Computer Hibernate

Jun 30, 2010

After selecting Linux 2.6.23-22-generic 64-bit in the GRUB bootloader, I am staring at a black screen with a white flashing underscore for almost 2 minutes (usually between 1min40sec and 2min). The Linux kernel is loading here, and it's taking forever!

Once Plymouth starts it barely even manages to flash into view before it's done and I get to login, so bravo to Canonical. But seriously, I need that boot time cut down A LOT. Since I'm assuming it has quite some relevance, here's all my installed programs: (So if you know any offenders you can point them out) I can see it also lists packages I've removed after installing them. Removed packages are listed as "deinstall" and are, obviously, NOT installed or functioning, but their config files remain I assume. I also cannot make my computer hibernate, and if I try to put it to sleep when it's on critical power, it will continue waking up again until it runs so hard out of power it just dies.

Ubuntu :: Computer Runs Slower Than Windows / Make It Up?

Oct 1, 2010

I have a 2-year old DELL XPS M1330. I used to have Windows Vista on it, but over time, I believe it became clogged with too many programs and so I wiped the hard drive and installed ubuntu 10.04 LTS about 2 weeks ago. However, ubuntu many times seems to run slower than vista did. I have 4 GB of RAM, an Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 (2.1 GHz, 3MB Cache, 800MHz FSB), 320GB HDD, 128MB nVIDIA GeForce 8400M. Ubuntu recognizes me as having dual processors at 2.1 GHz and 3.4GB RAM, but when I'm watching a simple video, whether online or locally on the computer, my CPU usage invariably jumps to 100% and it lags. Sometimes, even simple word processing makes it slow significantly.

Ubuntu Networking :: Make Computer Invisible To Other Clients On A Wireless?

Dec 26, 2010

I want to make my computer invisible or hidden to the other computers connected to the same wireless network. In other words, I want to turn off network visibility or network mapping. I think this amounts to the ability to turn on and off the Windows Link-Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder. [URL]... On windows, I believe this would be comparable to setting the wireless network as Public instead of Home. I like to share files using Ubuntu when I am connected to my Home router, but I don't want to be discoverable or visible to clients on a public wifi network.

I have already created a shared folder on my desktop which installed some sort of networking components to interact with Windows, but I don't want the public wifi network to see this folder, or my computer name at all. I want to be invisible to other clients on the same network. Right now I am visible and can see other clients connected to this public wifi router.

(In case some ask: I do not want to disable SSID broadcasting on the router as it is a public wifi router that I do not have access to.) Can anyone explain how to do this (preferably with a GUI method so I can reverse the steps when I connect to my Home network)?

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Install System On My Computer / Make It Possible?

Feb 19, 2011

I trying to re-install ubuntu on my computer. I'm currently on 10.10 (upgraded from 10.04) but live cd doesn't work with my hardware! I'm on asus G60Jx laptop with nvidia gts 360m. I'm not the only one to have this problem. It's my third message on this forum about this because no one answering me after 5 bump. I ask for help in ask ubuntu. I got "install ubuntu 10.04 and upgrade it, it don't take so much time" ok, I'll do that, but for 11.04, can I expect to be able to use the liveCD installation or I will install 10.04 to upgrade it after? I know that I can't change nothing for 10.10 but a bug is bug, and I wish that my computer will be more supported, thank to all. And this time, answering to me please and show me how can I report this. I know that I can use ubuntu-bug but I didn't found the fine section.

Software :: Make Ubuntu Adapt To New Computer / Hardware On Every Boot?

Aug 17, 2010

I have installed an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS distro on a external mobile HDD with 500 GB. I want to use the HDD as a Flash USB, so that I can work with my own OS on every computer I use. I tried to isntall the Flash distributions on the HDD, but they could manage to set the casper file to max 4 Gb, and I want to use the whole HDD. So I installed Lucid Lynx.

The UUID's of root and swap partitions are static, and are written correctly in /boot/grub/grub.cfg, /etc/fstab and /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume. It runs perfectly most of the time on different computers, but sometimes fails on e.g. reboot. So the question is: Is there anything I can do to make Linux adapt to the new hardware on every boot? Any files to modify or delete?

Ubuntu :: How To Calibrate My Touchscreen

Feb 14, 2010

I have an eGalax touchscreen which I installed using the xserver-xorg-input-evtouch package. Now touching the screen makes the mouse pointer move in all sorts of random directions.

What I want, of course, is for the mouse pointer to move to the point where I touched the screen. Typically this is called 'calibration'. Maybe there's a program to run or something, but I can't find it. how do I calibrate my touch screen?

I'm running Jaunty 9.04 so there is no 'System -> Administration -> Calibrate Touchscreen' program.

Ubuntu :: Using A Mouse Instead Of A Touchscreen?

Jun 30, 2011

You have probably seen the TV shows and films with the law enforcement agency, or the team at "Leverage" have a large screen with other side screens.

I don't have a holographic display, or even a 60" touchscreen, but I do have a TV, and a couple of computers running 10.10 and 11.04.

What I would like to do, using a mouse instead of a touchscreen, is "push" photos, videos, or dossiers on enemy agents to another screen or phone.

I would imagine it to be something along the lines of hot zones on the desktop, so that if I flick an item to, say, the right of the screen, it will leave my desktop and pop up on the desktop of the (networked, but separate and different) computer to my right, and if I drag / flick an item to the top centre it will Bluetooth it to my phone (which I'll set up to automatically accept any files from "my.desktop.homelan".

I had something a little similar with, I think, Compiz, in that if I flicked an item to the right it would dump it onto virtual desktop 2 (of four horizontal ones).

What search terms would I use in Google or Ubuntu Help to get me started? I can compile, but I'd rather not, as I'm not very good at it, and I can edit .cfg files as long as there are plain English descriptors ("Enable_Feature_Foo=1" "Fave_Place=/home/Me/fave/" etc).

Ubuntu :: Make Computer Accessible Without Opening Gaping Security Hole?

Mar 4, 2010

my son is 15, autistic and mentally retarded. he is moderate-low functioning and loves to watch barney the dinosaur, thomas the tank engine and other young children's programming on videos on his computer. he can talk in a limited way and can read out loud at about the first-grade level, though he seems to have little or no comprehension of what he's read (hyperlexia).i'm having problems with viruses and spyware because he lacks the judgment that keeps the rest of us from clicking on every window that pops up. we've had a particularly nasty crop of ad-ware viruses lately that pops up graphic porn ads even when the browser is closed. i've had enough of this.

the computer is an ancient dell dimension 4600 desktop (circa ~2002) running windows xp. i've run ubuntu from a live cd and installed flash as a test. videos videos play fine, so that's not a problem. i don't really want to replace the computer becasue it still works and is only used by him to run firefox. i am willing to buy a new computer if that turns out to be the only option.i've been using ubuntu exclusively on my laptop for several years and i would like to remove windows from his computer and replace it with ubuntu. i'm wondering how i can make his computer as accessible as possible to him while not sacrificing too much security.my son has very poor fine motor control over his hands. he can use a mouse with some difficulty, but using a keyboard is out of the question. he can use the mouse to click on the shortcuts to his favorite videos, but i can't think of how he would be able to enter a password for his account. not only does he have the fine motor problem, but he is not able to remember any usefully secure password.

does anyone have any ideas about how to make his computer accessible to him without opening a gaping security hole? two ideas that i've kicked around are creating a user with absolutely the minimum privileges required to use firefox and no password or finding some way to enter a password that doesn't require a keyboard. i haven't come up with how to implement either of those ideas successfully.

Ubuntu Installation :: Get 3M Touchscreen To Work

Jun 13, 2010

I am trying to get my 3M touchscreen to work in Ubuntu. Presently, I have the usbtouchscreen module loaded -- which results in touches being recognized, but the y-axis is backwards (ie: if I press at the top, it shows up at the bottom). Given that hal is depreciated, the only place I could note for configuration options the xorg.conf.d directory. But, I'm unsure what needs to be added there.

Additionally, I am confused over usbtouchscreen vs evdev vs evtouch -- which is supposed to be used at this point?

Ok, some system info:

I am running Ubuntu 10.04

Ubuntu :: Get USB-Touchscreen From Faytch Running?

Aug 13, 2010

since Ubuntu 9.04 I try to get my USB-Touchscreen from Faytch running. With some changes in the setup.sh of the drivers that can be downloaded from faytech.de I finally got it running under 9.04. Changes I made were blacklist path and since no xorg.conf exists anymore I started with a 8.04 Live-CD and copied the xorg.conf from there. not nice but worked. Now with 10.04 new drivers are available but (still only for 8.04). Did the same hack with the xorg.conf (blacklist path was already updated). So the driver and touch stuff works even without any driver whenever I hit the touch screen (anywhere / even in the middle) I always get a mouse click in the top left corner. and that keeps on even after installing the driver.

So without driver I get a click in the upper left corner and with driver installed and calibrated I get a click where I have my finger on the screen (that is what I want) AND a click in the upper left corner (THAT IS WHAT I NOT WANT). I think Ubuntu recognizes the touchscreen as a kind of "unspezified" input device and does a click whenever a touch-event occurs. How can I deactivate that behavior without disabling all the USB??

Ubuntu :: Toughbook Touchscreen Is Gone In Lucid?

Sep 24, 2010

I have a Toughbook CF-74 with a "Fujitsu USB Touch Panel" (how lsusb used to enumerate it). It used to work fairly well up until Karmic (couldn't get the calibration perfect around the edges), but it's just not there anymore in 10.04. I can only assume it's a kernel thing, because I tried some test installs of Debian Testing and OpenSUSE 11.3 (both with newer kernels than Lucid) and it's not there either.

I tried to manually load a kernel module for a different Fujitsu touch screen (from an actual Fujitsu laptop), but it didn't seem to detect anything.

There's not a whole lot of info out there about running Linux on a CF-74, so I think I'm in kind of in uncharted territory with some of this stuff.
