Ubuntu :: Plug In Headset Into The Font USB It Doesn't Work
Apr 30, 2010
I just installed Linux(Ubuntu) and I when from Windows to Linux. I use the option to use the entire hard drive when it installed and my question is when I had it use the entire hard drive did it keep the computer drivers or did it erase them? I notice that the sound is only about have as loud as before but is that Linux or my computer? I also notice when I plug in my mp3 sometimes it doesn't detect it. Also when I plug in my headset into the font USB it doesn't work. I'm not sure what is going on.

first because of my nvidia card if I don't put nomodeset my screen turns off.also whenever I try to update my nvidia drivers either the ones from the ones from the website or the propriety drivers I get a MCU failure or something like that and to fix that i have to change "nvidia" in my xorg.conf to "nv" but then my resolution loads to 640x480 which i cant change and it says im not using the propriety drivers so then i changed "nv" to "vesa" which makes my screen highest screen resolution 1280x 720 and apparently my refresh rate is 0. but i cant do anything good without the propriety drivers. Also my sound doesn't work at all unless i plug in some headphones.

I have a DSL modem with four ports and a built-in wireless router downstairs. It works great: I have wired Ethernet for my PCs downstairs (all plugged in directly to the DSL modem); my son has great wireless access upstairs (using the built-in wireless in his laptop). PROBLEM: I want to add another, desktop, PC upstairs. I've been trying to use wireless, with a plug-in a Linksys USB stick. It doesn't work worth crap.
I'm considering a) getting another phone jack upstairs, and moving my DSL modem there, or b) stringing some CAT-5 cable from the modem downstairs to the PC upstairs. Putting a wireless PCI card in my upstairs desktop PC might also solve the problem, but the PC only has one PCI slot, and I'd rather keep it free, if at all possible.
QUESTION: Is there any kind of "wireless repeater", where I can a) get wireless access from my DSL modem/wireless base station downstairs, and b) give me some spare Ethernet ports, so I can plug in desktop PC (so the PC can have a wired Ethernet connection)? POSSIBLE SOLUTION: I have an old Linksys WRT54G router that I'm not using. Q: Is there any way to configure it for this purpose? Q: Would it be possible to use it for this purpose if I installed OpenWRT?

Actually I want to log a bug but I don't really know what package to log it against. The problem is that by default Pango is choosing the AR PL UMing CN as the font to render Japanese text when the current font doesn't have Japanese glyphs. But AR PL UMing CN is a Chinese font, so Chinese glyphs for kanji characters (e.g., 覚) are displayed. This is jarring and confusing for Japanese readers.
This situation mostly arises when you have mixed English and Japanese text. Some applications (for instance Firefox) will allow you to select a font for Asian text. Thus if the text contains only Asian characters it will use the font you select, rather than what Pango would have selected. But if it is a mix of English and Japanese, you end up with the wrong glyphs.
Other environments (like gnome-terminal, or a gedit) have difficulties as well. Since the primary interface requires mono spaced roman characters you run into difficulty selecting fonts. Most Japanese fonts only have proportional roman characters. This means that if use a nice roman font and use Japanese text (for instance file names), you end up with Chinese glyphs. What I want is a mechanism that will work across all of Gnome for selecting the font I want to use for Chinese characters. That way I can choose either Japanese or Chinese glyphs.
I realize this is low priority. It only bugs me a little, but many of my Japanese colleagues are put off from using Ubuntu because they are confused by the Chinese glyphs that pop up on my screen from time to time. As I said, I'd like to file a bug, but I'm not sure against what package...

I just purchased a Logitech ClearChat Comfort USB Headset. It works fine in Windows but unfortunately the same can't be said for Linux. It doesn't even seem to be detected as when I use the command cat /proc/bus/input/devices I get
I: Bus=0003 Vendor=0b38 Product=0003 Version=0110
N: Name="USB-compliant keyboard"
P: Phys=usb-0000:00:1d.2-1/input0
S: Sysfs=/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.2/usb8/8-1/8-1:1.0/input/input0
U: Uniq=
[Code]....
I checked Volume control and I have Headphone checked, and in switched Headphone is also checked. Actually... Maybe it is being detected... In the Device dropdown menu in Volume control I see "Logitech USB Headset". I checked that and the volume is turned up, speaker and microphone are selected in preferences... Sound is still coming out of my monitor's speakers though.

my headset has a headphone jack and microphone jack.
if i go to sound preferences > Hardware (Tab) and select Profile: Analog Stereo Input, then I can record sound with Sound Recorder. but in order to be able to hear what I recorded, I then have to go back to sound preferences > Hardware (Tab) and select Profile: Analog Stereo Output.
i see there is a profile option "Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output + Analog Stereo input", but when that one is selected, i can't hear anything through the speakers..., so, still having to switch back and forth as described above. perhaps a profile option with "Analog Stereo Output + Analog Stereo Input" would work, but it is not there...
why do i have to switch back and forth? (actually, it seems this setting-switching-requirement is true of the laptop's built-in speakers and mic as well, not just the headset...)
(Everything in GNOME ALSA Mixer is unmuted and set to maximum volume. Capture is at maximum and the "Rec" box is checked...)

I was trying to make the mic to work on openSUSE 11.3 x64 (it's a headset's mic). At the beginning I thought it was just a mater of plugging the mic on, as it's the earphones'case, but didn't work. Then I found this link: Skype, KDE4, OpenSUSE 11.3 and PulseAudio Doesn't sound bad, but I also use Wine and Pulseaudio is said to be not compatible with it.
So, if Pulseaudio is enabled with setup-pulseaudio --enable, how do I disable it should I find problems with Wine? Is Pulseaudio really needed to make the mic to work, or it depends on what I want to use it for?

When I started using Slackware I've been using USB headset. Everything ran perfectly fine. They got recognized, I could use all of it's functions and so on. Unfortunately volume control on them stopped working so I had to service them, and like in every third world country, yay I need to wait minimum three weeks just so they can press a button and say "Yup, they don't work".
I bought normal headset to use them while other one is getting fixed, and didn't expect any problems with them considering they are "old" technology, normal audio input and output.
Now problem is following, sound works fine but microphone doesn't. Once I managed to "fix" it by switching audio input from mic to something else and then back to mic, now even that doesn't work. Another... "problem" is if I leave my USB webcam plugged in while booting computer, there is no sound at all, ether on line ones or USB ones but I can easily solve that problem by unplugging webcam, rebooting and plugging it back in later.
Now everything ran fine until my computer shutdown while I was sleeping. Don't know why, but it started happening recently, don't see anything smart in logs so I assume its... something, read it could be cache, HDD, temperature and so on but since logs don't write down anything smart... will deal with it some other time.
When I talk I can actually hear myself on the headset, which probably means that they work. If I put mic boost all the way up, I can hear myself perfectly clear, but somehow... seems that that information just doesn't get to Slackware, well it gets somewhat considering that it reacts to me adjusting mic boost on KMix, but everything else... no.
Arecord doesn't record anything, TS register as microphone isn't plugged in at all, skype doesn't get any input ether.

I know from another guy who connected an HDMI TV over DisplayPort, and this devices is listed unter "HDMI1", and not "DP1". So I am not quite sure where it would be listed even if it found the screen.

When I start X, my keyboard does not work. It seems like the wrong layout is being used. If I unplug it and then plug it back in then everything is good. I only have any Xkb options in xorg.conf.d. below is my keyboard config from xorg.conf.d. NOTE: I have /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d symlink'd to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d, if that might be the cause of this problem

After installing libre3.3.2 using the Slackbuild scripts, I found that it displayed fonts correctly, but doesn't print the same font on the printer. The output of the printer should be Arial, but is instead some elongated, overlapping mess.
The same Slackware package installed on SW13.1 prints normally. (Same computer, different partition)
Spadmin used to control the printer fonts, but apparently not anymore.

You have .exe files to install stuff. Even tho I have used ndiswrapper in the past I can't remember how now. I've got a nice old laptop with a nice install of SUSE 10 that does everything I want except connect to the internet. I've got about 1 more day of patience remaining before I have to revert to the hated Ws. I even got a supposed "plug and play" Asus usb-n10, but have not been able to work out the install.

When I installed my 64 bit system of Ubuntu 10.04 the sound worked very well and I were very happy. The problem started however when I installed Skype which uses pulseaudio. As soon as I start skype (or any other application that uses pulse, HoN for example) the applications sound output or input does not work at all. If I have pulseaudio started in some way, applications that I suppose do not use it like spotify or flash player stops to produce sounds. And when I type "pulseaudio" in the terminal it gives me this:
