Ubuntu Multimedia :: Connect A 22'' TFT Using A DisplayPort To DVI Adaptor Plug - Doesn't Seem To Find The Screen
Jan 27, 2010
I have a Dell Latitude E6400 with Karmic (Intel graphics chip). Currently, I am trying to connect a 22'' TFT using a DisplayPort to DVI adaptor plug. Unfortunately, it doesn't even seem to find the screen. xrandr does not list it:
[Code]...
I know from another guy who connected an HDMI TV over DisplayPort, and this devices is listed unter "HDMI1", and not "DP1". So I am not quite sure where it would be listed even if it found the screen.

I upgrade yesterday my lenny to squeeze.
Now I have some problem with compiz. When I do compiz --replace, I get:
compiz (core) - Fatal: Software rendering detected.
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0
Launching fallback window manager
Is it a driver problem? My ATI video card is one of them that works only with open driver and they seems corrrectly installed. glxinfo | grep render, give me a positive result.

I have a laptop and an external monitor connected via displayport. I can configure both displays via settings with correct resolution and arrangement. However, this configuration is not sticking, and every time I shut down the laptop or close the lid I will need to fight with black screens and more to bring the same configuration again. Basically, it seems that the monitor is "stealing" the primary role to the laptop's native screen (I have it configured as secondary, but also being primary the configuration gets messed).
After many trial & errors, this is the routine I have found to make things work every time I boot / awake the system:
1. Boot. Laptop's display shows the booting sequence.
2. When the login screen should appear, laptop's display goes black, monitor shows background.
3. If I press F9 to increase brightness, the brightness icon appears in the monitor, but it is stuck at the minimum.
4. The only way to leave this point is by pressing F7 (project screen) and then F9 again to increase brightness. Then the laptop's screen does light up.
This is when I'm lucky. Sometimes the configuration goes mad and I get mirrored displays and different resolutions, without touching the settings myself. Also, if I unplug the displayport I run the risk of getting stuck with a black screen in the laptop, without any way of recovering the GUI other than rebooting (Ctrl Alt F2 will still show the command line screen).
My system is Debian 8 testing up to date, running in a Lenovo T430 with Intel components. I'm not sure the monitor is relevant here, but in any case it is an Eizo CS240.

I have an 27" iMac which I wish to use as display for my Ubuntu machine using it's mini Displayport as perTo that end I bought a new Intel DH67GD motherboard and 2600k CPU and a Displayport->Mini Displayport cable. However it seems that X doesn't detect the displayport connection correctly. When I boot the Ubuntu machine the iMac correctly switches to that input and Intel motherboard screen appears on the display followed by the grub interface. However it seems that when X should start it doesn't recognise the Displayport connection. The iMac goes back to displaying it's own screen and the X logs don't seem to recognise the connection

Apparently you can't get EDID information through a Displayport->DVI adapter. That means that a default install of Lucid (or Natty!) does not recognize the resolutions of any monitor connected with such an adapter.
I'd rather not create an entire multihead xorg.conf just to specify NoDDC. Is there any other way to pass that option to X?

recently I risked a look to the Linux world and I'm happy so far, but now I've got a Problem, I'm unable to solve by myself. I installed Mint (Julia) on my old Laptop to test Linux. The Laptop has a very old PCMCIA WLAN Card with a Realtek rtl8180 chipset. Everything seems to run perfectly so far with one exception: the WLAN doesn't find any Network to connect although the card and the driver seem to be installed correctly.
Here some code from the terminal:
Code:
lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RS200/RS200M AGP Bridge [IGP 340M] (rev 02)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc PCI Bridge [IGP 340M]

I occasionally use a DisplayPort->HDMI cable to connect my laptop to my AV-Receiver, however I only get the picture to the AV-Receiver, but no sound. I read that not all DisplayPort->HDMI cables support sound, so I tested Windows7 on the same machine and it transmitted sound over that cable just fine. So I conclude that it is a Linux driver problem.
So I generally wonder whether this can be made to work easily or not. Does anyone here have experiences with this topic, especially with nvidia graphics cards managing the display port? (I did find older posts about HDMI audio, but they were all concerned with ATI graphics.)
pavucontrol / phonon do list a "High Definition Audio Controller Digital Stereo (HDMI)"-device, but sending sound to it does not do a thing. Furthermore, my dell laptop only has a displayport, but no HDMI connector.

About a month ago I got the usual "time to update your plugins" and was redirected to adobes webpage. However, the plugin it offered me was incompatible with my build, an AMD Turion 64 X2. I tried downloading some other Macromedia Flash Plug-ins from synaptic and none of them have worked. Since then I've been using vista primarily. I enjoy using ubuntu alot more, especially with all the work I put into my desktop and getting compiz the way I wanted it, but if I can't stream videos then there's simply no reason for me to use ubuntu. I don't have to go back to vista.

first because of my nvidia card if I don't put nomodeset my screen turns off.also whenever I try to update my nvidia drivers either the ones from the ones from the website or the propriety drivers I get a MCU failure or something like that and to fix that i have to change "nvidia" in my xorg.conf to "nv" but then my resolution loads to 640x480 which i cant change and it says im not using the propriety drivers so then i changed "nv" to "vesa" which makes my screen highest screen resolution 1280x 720 and apparently my refresh rate is 0. but i cant do anything good without the propriety drivers. Also my sound doesn't work at all unless i plug in some headphones.

I just installed Linux(Ubuntu) and I when from Windows to Linux. I use the option to use the entire hard drive when it installed and my question is when I had it use the entire hard drive did it keep the computer drivers or did it erase them? I notice that the sound is only about have as loud as before but is that Linux or my computer? I also notice when I plug in my mp3 sometimes it doesn't detect it. Also when I plug in my headset into the font USB it doesn't work. I'm not sure what is going on.

I run Jockey-GTK in terminator and after searching, it brings back no results and says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system." I don't really have a clue of what I could be missing, but I got my drivers working in Arch on this laptop before so it can't be anything too difficult[URL]

I have installed the Wubi version of Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell 1537 Studio laptop. Additionally, I have installed the GDK plug ins for .MP3 file support. When the installation completed, there was a message indicating the installation was successful, but it was unable to install one plug in. I am able to play .MP3's, but I can not add them to an audio disk project in Brasero. When I have Brasero do a search for the missing software, it can not find what it needs.

I want to play a Quicktime stream and can't figure it out. When I try to play it either in Firefox or Movie Player, it says I need a text/html decoder plugin, but doesn't find one from the autosearch. Downloaded Ubuntu Restricted Extras from the Software Center, but no luck (don't know if I'm supposed to "do" something after that). MPlayer doesn't work on my computer, and I've also downloaded Avidemux, thinking maybe I'd get the right codec or plugin, but again, no luck. I am on Ubuntu 10.04 on an Eee PC, if it makes a diff.

I'm trying to get the screen graphics working correctly on a newly purchased ACER Aspire 7740G laptop. It has a 17.3" 16:9 screen with an ATI Radeon Mobility HD5470 512MB graphics card.
The command LSPCI in Terminal gives.....
"02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Device 68e0"
I've also uploaded /var/ log/ xorg.0.log.
In System/Preferences/Display the pink coloured monitor screen has 'UNKNOWN' displayed on it with only 3 resolutions available.
I installed the ATI Catalyst Control centre but when it initialises, it produces an error saying that there is no driver installed - I thought the XORG log shows that the driver is installed.
The command ATICONFIG in Terminal reports.........
"aticonfig: No supported adapters detected" !

Recently I install ubuntu 10.10 on my Sony Vaio laptop. After the CD boot I always got a black screen, after a week i figured that there's nothing wrong, it's just the screen doesnt show up on my laptop's screen. So I use an external monitor and It showed up as normal.
But I need to have it show up on my laptop's screen. I tried to use "additional driver" to activate latest Nvidia driver but after that even my external monitor doesnt work too. Latest driver doesnt work properly i guess. I did try to install older driver version manually but after I turned of gdm, install driver and reboot, my ubuntu always starts with tty1 command terminal. tried ctrl+alt+7 but it stucked at (checking battery state), startx doesnt help me return to graphical screen too.
I got help from a moderator here but the best result so far is to edit my /etc/default/grub. Change
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset"
Sudo update-grub
after the reboot I have it shows up on my laptop's screen. But it seems low-bit color,a bit grand to me(compared to external monitor, both w/o driver). Anw i checked system/preference>monitor . It showed up that my monitor:unknown. I can't choose other resolutions, refresh rate = 0.
I always know its my widescreen is the problem. I have had a lot of problems dealing wgames/application (on windows) can't work on 16:9 mode. install a stable Nvidia driver
Everything I tried in the past weeks is in here [URL] My laptop is SONY VAIO VPCCW19FX, Nvidia GeForce GT 230M, widescreen monitor

i had an nvidia geforce 6800 card in my pc and that just all of a sudden stopped working (the screen went blank) so i went to my onboard video and it works but no matter what video card i install, it doesn't work (still a black screen) and i know the cards work on other pc's but just not this one. i've tried different ati cards and nvidia cards with no luck. i've also wanted to disable my onboard card all together but my bios doesn't have that option for some reason. i also thought that it might be the slot but when i install the video card in the pc, the fan works so it's not that.

I use GIMP to edit pictures. When I cut part of one picture and put onto another picture, I try to save it as a jpeg, but it says "You must export image before you can save- JPEG Plug-In can't handle transparency." Is there another plug in that allows me to do this?
Also on a GIMP related subject, how can I set the eraser tool to transparency instead of white/other colors?

I have a DSL modem with four ports and a built-in wireless router downstairs. It works great: I have wired Ethernet for my PCs downstairs (all plugged in directly to the DSL modem); my son has great wireless access upstairs (using the built-in wireless in his laptop). PROBLEM: I want to add another, desktop, PC upstairs. I've been trying to use wireless, with a plug-in a Linksys USB stick. It doesn't work worth crap.
I'm considering a) getting another phone jack upstairs, and moving my DSL modem there, or b) stringing some CAT-5 cable from the modem downstairs to the PC upstairs. Putting a wireless PCI card in my upstairs desktop PC might also solve the problem, but the PC only has one PCI slot, and I'd rather keep it free, if at all possible.
QUESTION: Is there any kind of "wireless repeater", where I can a) get wireless access from my DSL modem/wireless base station downstairs, and b) give me some spare Ethernet ports, so I can plug in desktop PC (so the PC can have a wired Ethernet connection)? POSSIBLE SOLUTION: I have an old Linksys WRT54G router that I'm not using. Q: Is there any way to configure it for this purpose? Q: Would it be possible to use it for this purpose if I installed OpenWRT?
