View 9 RepliesActually I want to log a bug but I don't really know what package to log it against. The problem is that by default Pango is choosing the AR PL UMing CN as the font to render Japanese text when the current font doesn't have Japanese glyphs. But AR PL UMing CN is a Chinese font, so Chinese glyphs for kanji characters (e.g., 覚) are displayed. This is jarring and confusing for Japanese readers.
This situation mostly arises when you have mixed English and Japanese text. Some applications (for instance Firefox) will allow you to select a font for Asian text. Thus if the text contains only Asian characters it will use the font you select, rather than what Pango would have selected. But if it is a mix of English and Japanese, you end up with the wrong glyphs.
Other environments (like gnome-terminal, or a gedit) have difficulties as well. Since the primary interface requires mono spaced roman characters you run into difficulty selecting fonts. Most Japanese fonts only have proportional roman characters. This means that if use a nice roman font and use Japanese text (for instance file names), you end up with Chinese glyphs. What I want is a mechanism that will work across all of Gnome for selecting the font I want to use for Chinese characters. That way I can choose either Japanese or Chinese glyphs.
I realize this is low priority. It only bugs me a little, but many of my Japanese colleagues are put off from using Ubuntu because they are confused by the Chinese glyphs that pop up on my screen from time to time. As I said, I'd like to file a bug, but I'm not sure against what package...
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 and yes, I am upgraded fully. But every time I go to look at the items in my trash bin, it doesn't respond and goes dark.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been an Ubuntu user for a few years now, and in the previous versions I have made numerous bootable USB devices, I always thought it was so useful, and I never have had any problems.I just installed version 9.10 the other day, and it seems to be working well, but the USB bootable disk creator is messed up big time.When i try to select an .iso image to add to the source disk image area, it is just unresponsive. And when i try to do something else, like format a USB device, it says i cannot format because the device cannot mounted. But i know its mounted because i can access the contents of the drive.Anyways this was a huge disappointment as I was showing a friend how useful the UBUNTU tools are, and it does this. Does anyone know anything about this bug?

I need to create a network boot from 1 laptop to another, with a crossover ethernet cable between them, no routers no nothing, my computer is supposed to be the server. my 9.04 64 bit ubuntu machine is having some major stuttering issue, as in it can't stay on track and doesn't respond to keys at certain times, the normal flashing text bar is flashing very quickly and very eradically as well. I reinstalled ubuntu keeping my /home on a separate partition, and then upgraded to 9.10 thinking that'd fix it, it didn't.at this point i don't know what's happening, My windows partition is fine.

I was looking into installing Gnome for Slackware 13.1 due to the instability of KDE and I was able to find GSB [URL]. I ran the simple installation: Code: lynx --source [URL] Everything downloaded and installed so I logged off, ran xwmconfig and set it to gnome and then tried starting my xserver and my screen turns black with a single white dash in the corner. My keyboard doesn't respond (the lock lights won't turn on) and I'm stuck on this black page. I tried changing xwmconfig back to KDE and the same thing happens
View 14 Replies View RelatedAll of these freezes happen either while I'm in Nautilus or I'm opening Nautilus. The usual Ctrl+Alt+Fx (x being one to six) to get into the backstage does not work. If I have some music open then it would start looping the last couple of seconds.Now generally I would go check the logs, but I see no nautilus logs so what should I check?This is all pretty recent. I think that this started to happen when one day exim4 (and some packages all marked exim) got updated but I cannot be certain. Major playing-around after that would be some Wine issues but the system froze once before all that Wine fun.So step one, what should I check?

I have a Slackware 13.0 server that is not replying to icmp pings. However, I have double checked that /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_all is set to 0. The weird thing is I can run nc -v slackware 22 from any computer on my lan and the banner comes up just fine. The nic is on the same netmask and broadcast as all the other computers on my lan. I can log into it as well, it just doesn't respond to pings. I can even ping other computers and get replies just fine when pinging from inside the Slackware server.
I have even added an iptables INPUT rule for -p icmp -j ACCEPT. Although I've never had to do this. I ran tcpdump -vv icmp and I can see ping requests coming into the computer, however slackware simply doesn't respond. What could be causing this? A corrupt arp cache? It's been happening for more than a few hours so I wouldn't think so. How can I view the arp cache table? How do I clear it?
Yesterday something has happened with power supply, so 2 of 3 PCs has shut down. And now my debian pc doesn't respond to multimedia (volume to be precise) keys, leds also doesn't work. Other keys are fine. Tried xev, but it doesn't respond to multimedia keys either. I have dual boot with Win7 on this machine, and it works fine with multimedia keys.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen i open one of the web browsers i use and try to load a web site it's taking to long to respond and sometimes it doesnt load the website at all. I have tried with firefox,epiphany,opera with all the same results. I am sure that this is not a problem with my internet connection because i don't have these problems with windows.Also the network manager connection settings are correct
I also tried choosing the old kernel(2.6.32.24) to boot from but no success.The problem is the same as if i am using the 2.6.32.25 kernel. The strange thing is that i can download packages from synaptic with full speed. Last think.I have recently downloaded the recommended updates from the update manager but i don't remember what are the things that where updated.
I just installed Linux(Ubuntu) and I when from Windows to Linux. I use the option to use the entire hard drive when it installed and my question is when I had it use the entire hard drive did it keep the computer drivers or did it erase them? I notice that the sound is only about have as loud as before but is that Linux or my computer? I also notice when I plug in my mp3 sometimes it doesn't detect it. Also when I plug in my headset into the font USB it doesn't work. I'm not sure what is going on.

Arrow keys work, function keys work, even pressing enter gets the cd to spin in the drive, but it wont progress to loading the install files...
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've spend the morning poking through forums and attempting every fix suggested and still no luck on this one:At first i didn't have any sound. But now I do (and I'm not sure which solution fixed the problem). But I still don't have a Sound icon in my menu bar and when I attempt to access my Sound Preferences I receive the message: "Waiting for sound system to respond" which display indefinitely.
I tried:
- removing and reinstalling alsa packages
- deleting the .pulse folder
- adding a Pulseadio daemon
Mozilla 3.6.8, Linux Arch. It doesn't matter what minimum font size I set, Firefox still doesn't increase small font on pages...
View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter installing libre3.3.2 using the Slackbuild scripts, I found that it displayed fonts correctly, but doesn't print the same font on the printer. The output of the printer should be Arial, but is instead some elongated, overlapping mess.
The same Slackware package installed on SW13.1 prints normally. (Same computer, different partition)
Spadmin used to control the printer fonts, but apparently not anymore.

Have just upgraded (14-->15) using the dvd option; installed the nvidia driver (I think) and am able to startx and get to the Gnome 3 desktop (Wallpaper and top "task" bar look correct)..But, the mouse and keyboard have absolutely no affect. No matter what I click on, or what keyboard combination I use, nothing happens..(Have spent the last 3 hours researching it; and just seem to be getting nowhere.. I can do anything I need to from the CLI; but am not sure what to do..

I'm interested in converting TrueType font to be usable in (pdf)(La)TeX.
All the power google turn up just stuff f relating how to install microsoft fonts or do stuf on MikTeX.
I CANNOT USE XeLaTeX!!! I use pstricks and the font must be available in plain TeX! Otherwise my document looks inconsistent!
Most of my work happens in a terminal, so I need a clear, readable font. I've settled a while ago on Terminus [URL]..., which works wonders for me. I added XTerm*faceName : Terminus in my ~/.Xdefaults, and I do get the Terminus font. Unfortunately, a lot of Unicode glyphs are missing (mathematical symbols, greek and hebrew letters), displaying as little square blocks instead.
If I remove the faceName entry, the default configuration seems able to display most of the glyphs (including math, greek, hebrew, runic, and whatever else), but the default font is much harder to read.
A google search hints that it should be possible to use Terminus as the default font, and fallback to (an)other one(s) for missing glyphs, but provides no further explanation. I've seen documentation that recommends Bitstream Vera Sans as a fallback, but it lacks the glyphs I need too; I don't know how to identify the default font used by xterm either, I had a look at /usr/share/X11/app-defaults/XTerm, but all I can find are generic references to old pre-fontconfig font names.
Using Gentoo Linux, fontconfig and xterm are up to date, USEs trutype and unicode enabled, X.Org server 1.6.
Edit: I alternate between Ratpoison, Awesome and XMonad, without a desktop environment.
I have a 10.10 machine where it has taken to refusing to logout of one specific user account. When I choose logout/restart/whatever from the possible options, it takes me to the main login screen (with the drums) and it shows thet that user is still logged in. The only way, once this occurs, to rid myself of this is to sign in as an administrator and run shutdown -r 00 under sudo. Then it reboots. (Using the admin account to choose restart/shutdown also returns me to the mail login screen where that unpriv'd user is still logged in.) (The machine is fully up to date.)

I am a noob who is playing around with setting up a home print/file server using Ubuntu Server 10.04. I have successfully setup the server and am now configuring the SSH server so I can control remotely.
I have setup RSA keys with a passphrase as outlined in the SSH - Ubuntu Community Documentation. However, when I log in remotely I am only asked for the passphrase the first time. Any subsequent log-ins simply take a few seconds to connect without any passphrase request. After restarting my laptop (that I use to connect remotely), I am again asked for the passphrase only the first time and subsuquent logins are without a passphrase. I would like to know if this is normal and if there is a way to have passphrase requested on each login.
Am being asked by karmic to login for a second time.
Tried installing startup manager and reinstalling gdm but no change.
Anyone else with this problem, or who had it and fixed it?
I set it to autologin for a few weeks, then reverted to standard login, and the problem has gone away
is there a way to edit which commands require a sudo? or some programs, like the CPU frequency monitor on panel, requires a password to change. where would i start if i want to change this?

View 3 Replies View RelatedThere where some updates for 10.04.1 yesterday, after I installed them, a few hours later I restarted my machine as new headers and kernel files where downloaded.So this morning, when I come in, I wanted to check my software sources as I saw something a little odd yesterday.When I try to start that program; I am asked for my administrator password. Not the password I use for administrative tasks; which is what I am generally asked for.Anyone else seeing this? And if so, what happened. The admin account I have setup is My account, I am the only person on the machine. In the past I have entered my password and carried on; not this morning. Not sure what is happening; but I have not setup an actual admin account / password.
