My second NTFS partion has a wiered text icon instead of the normal hard drive one. My windows C: partition has the right logo but not the second disk. Here is a picture I attached of what is going on.
View 6 RepliesI'm trying to install ubuntu from a disk I got with a Ubuntu manual magazine, but once I choose the install option, the logo glows for a couple minutes then freezes and nothing happens. The same happens for running it without installation. Does anyone know what I should do? I'm currently downloading it onto a USB stick to attempt to boot it from that.

I have a 2 TB disk in an external SATA dock, formatted with a single ext3 (Linux) partition, which doesn't show up in the Windows 7 Computer Management->Disk Management utility, even as a raw/blank disk. I've verified that there's nothing wrong with the disk by connecting it to my Linux machine and mounting it, and I've verified that the dock is functioning properly by connecting a different FAT32-formatted disk, which mounts flawlessly as expected.I realize that I can't actually read the ext3 partition without additional software (e.g., Ext3IFS), but why doesn't the disk show up at all? Is there some sort of stupid anti-Linux filter built in? Is there any way to force Windows to recognize the disk, so that I can at the very least use direct block access with it?
Background: I want to clone an identical 2 TB disk onto this one. Due to my hardware layout, it's much easier to have the source disk attached to one machine and the destination disk connected to another, and do the clone over the network (the network is not a bottleneck with switched gigabit ethernet), than it is to hook them both up to one machine.(1) I did this once before when both machines were running Linux, but I've since upgraded the destination machine and decided to switch back to Windows for regular desktop use. I've got Cygwin installed, and have verified that the same basic method (dd + nc) will work, but I can't do anything if Windows doesn't even consider the destination disk to exist.I only have one eSATA port on each machine. Opening them up just to do this clone is a rather large annoyance. Also, since this is my backup disk, I'd like to eventually automate the cloning from the active disk to another one that I regularly swap with a third disk that I store off-site.
I had a drive with a partition layout like so:
~50gig Windows 7 - NTFS
~100gig Ubuntu - EXT3
~100gig Snow Leopard - HFS+
~100gig Extended Partition
-- ~100gig Swap Disk - exFat
I wanted to delete the Snow Leopard partition and format the Swap Disk partition to something else. exFat was causing major file size bloat on small files. QT sdk bloated to like 11 gigs or something ridiculous like that. Anyways, I loaded up an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS live cd and gparted then deleted the Snow Leopard partition. Gparted said "Mission Accomplished" and tried to rescan the drive, but never found it. At this point I restarted the computer, a dell laptop, which didn't boot with an unable to find a bootable device error. The ubuntu live cd doesn't see the drive anymore. gparted scans for drives indefinitely and fdisk -l has no output.
I'm trying to resize a partition on an IDE hard disk to use the entire disk but can not get more than a 309GB partition. I can get 295, 300, 301, 302GB, etc... fine but start getting problems with anything over 309GB. I get the following error with 310GB or more:

What I believe has happened is that I've corrupted the partition table. Essentially one of my partitions' ending point exceeds the maximum number of cylinders/sectors on my drive.
Essentially I have the same problem as on the thread @ [url] but do not know how to fix this and am afraid to reformat/partition based on sectors without really knowing what I'm doing here.

Where did the partition table go? The device had one ext3 partition something around 4GB(size of USB storage device). I need to restore few files from this device.
A part of my hd is ntfs (where I keep my windows and windows files). I edited it to be flagged as "bootable" in the disk tools that comes with ubuntu 10.10, and now it wont list as a file system in ubuntu (in other words I cant access it).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am completely new to Linux in general, and have recently downloaded Fedora 15 KDE spin. I tried dual-booting between Windows 7 and Fedora by shrinking one of my Windows partitions (I have two, this partition not containing the Windows installation). I tried shrinking it to 30 GB less than the total space available on the partition, and after pressing continue, received an error (which I unfortunately dismissed quickly and can't remember). In the file manager, Fedora showed that my partition changed from 1.3Tb to 1.2 Tb, but I couldn't access it. Upon rebooting into Windows, I still can't access it, receiving a "format drive before use" popup and then error stating that it is possibly of a different filesystem or corrupt.
Unfortunately, I stupidly didn't backup any of my data (which I will be sure to remember to do in the future). I installed EASEUS Partition Master 8.0.1 Home Edition, which states that my drive is still of NTFS filesystem and has the total space it should. However, upon clicking "check drive," it states there are no errors and when trying to "explore files," it doesn't find any (yet it shows the correct amount of used and unused space). I then tried running TestDisk, but only allows me to check my media drive E, which is my dvd drive that has my Fedora Live CD in it (which cannot be ejected manually or through Windows, an error stating it cannot be ejected). I didn't go through with TestDisk for my DVD drive because I needed to verify the type of partition (which to my knowledge shouldn't even exist). It shows 700 something MiB / 600 something MiB. Although I have decent general knowledge about computers, I am a complete novice when it comes to doing something like this.
There's a long story about how I got to the current problem, as I had a problem before with partitioning, but I guess the only important piece of information is I fixed it with testdisk.Now, if I open Gparted, I see all my disk as unallocated. If I go the properties, I get an error about not being able to make a partition outside of the disk.Here is what I get with "fdisk -l" (I apologize, the output is in spanish, though you most likely can understand the data):

I did notice the end cylinder of the extended partition is 24322,while the HDD theoritacally has only 24321. Also, I remember having a swap partition inside of sda3.Ubuntu works just fine, but I want to change my partitions without having to reinstall everything.
My back up drive crashed and I managed to save most of everything on it (my only copies of my children's pictures since they were born are the most important) on my primary drive, but it completely filled my Home partition. I booted from the live cd and moved the partitions around and when I was done I was resizing my saved data partition so that I would have more space till I got another backup drive. in the middle of resizing it my two year old bumped the flash drive and it shut down with 11 min left. When I rebooted in the live cd (which I am using right now) it showed all m partitions as fine except /dev/sda4. So I used test disk to fix it, now gparted won't recognize my drive at all. Disk utility reads the partitions but it made /dev/sda4 into an extended partition with my data on one partition and free space in the other. and then it up some extra partition at the end. I can read my data from the live cd but I don't have any means by which to transfer it somewhere else. I need help fixing it, Please anyone that can help!
Gparted reads the entire drive as unallocated and gives a warning that you can't have a partition outside of the disk.
Currently I only have Ubuntu installed on my laptop taking up my main drive. I'd like to partition my disk into two separate partitions. Whenever I open up terminal and type fdisk /dev/sda I always get: unable to open /dev/sda despite the fact that System>Administration>Disk Utility shows it as my main device. (/dev/sda1 is the main volume)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to free up some space on the 4GB partition of my netbook since I've been receiving these warnings that I have NNN_MB left as free space. So what I did was to remove programs (via Ubuntu Software Center) that I thought wasn't that a priority for me.
But, there seems to be no change! Am I doing something wrong? The warnings keep coming.
Now that I'm thinking of upgrading to Lucid Lynx, I'm not too sure if I can.
I spend the vast majority of my time in Ubuntu, but every so often I still encounter the odd errand that requires a free copy of Windows that came with my hardware.
So I have Windows 7 on my laptop which I like slightly better than XP and a whole lot better than Vista. I am not in there a lot besides that its required for a web design class and sometimes for a few stubborn games, but I would very much like to copy my Windows 7 partition to a 100gb partition on my TB HDD.
How do I do it? Keep in mind, I am barely two tiers above noob on a scale of 1 to 20. I am working on it though.
I also want this partition to be bootable. I dont care if I lose the rest of the data on the disk. I want to redo everything anyway. I definitely want it to boot though, not just for the data to exist.
I would like to put my ubuntu system (the one on my partition) in a usb drive, so that way I can take it everywhere I go. The reason for this is because all of the programs I have and the configuration I currently have in my ubuntu (I should say "macbuntu"). That is:
burg boot loader (I probably don't need this one!)
x system plymouth theme || also windows 7 original plymouth theme
mac4lin 1.0 aqua GTK theme and emerald theme
mac ultimate icon theme
mac4lin 1.0 cursor theme (working even with compiz)
gnome global menu
compiz packagers ppawith all the extra stuff
telepathy ppa for empathy, having all the extra stuff working
also win2-7-pack_v-9.1
And lots more stuff!
I don't want my personal documents though (text docs, music, videos, pics 'maybe few pics'), just configuration files and programs. Can this even be possible?...
According to what I have read to date, Linux should let me hide or unhide a partition by just using gparted or parted, or reverting to fdisk. Well, all three say you can do it, but none of them does. According to several sources, there is software available under DOS or Windows for the purpose, but I want to do it as a separate boot method or under Ubuntu when I boot up Live.

The installer recognizes it as well, but the partition area is blank and the option are greyed out. How can I go on? BTW, on the disk currently Fedora 14 is (fresh) installed and working fine, but a software install script is written specifically for Ubuntu. That's why I need to change to Ubuntu and it's no hardware problem.

I was upgrading Ubuntu to Natty last night, but it crashed just before completion. Then, I couldn't mount the drive so I'm now booting it from the live disc. I go into gparted, but it gives me an error saying:
Can't have a partition outside the disk!
I have /root and /home in separate partitions, so I must find a way so that /home can survive. I've run testdisk and this is what I get:

There are only 2 Linux partitions, Linux and Swap, so it seems that my /home has disappeared! Is there a way to recover it? Also, how do I fix Gparted's complaint?
When I installed Lucid several months ago, I went ahead and let Ubuntu use the entire disk. Since then I have learned more about partitions and came to realize that I didn't have a separate /home partition, meaning that clean installs of new Ubuntu releases would wipe my data. I would like to carve my hard drive up from the LiveCD environment while preserving my current data and Lucid installation.

When I look for specific info about what is taking the space using du command I get that the space used by the root system is 7.2Gb. I get to the same conclusion when checking the space with Nautilus.
had 9.04 install on a dual proc home built system that was running fine until a recent update wiped out grub. Since I have all my data backed up, I decided just to install 10.04. I select Use Entire Disk but when Ubuntu tries to install, I get this error:The ext4 file system creation in partition #1 of Serial ATA nvidia_dacaecb (mirror) failed.

But I saw that it was wrong and took the check back. And after this was damaged NTFS on the partition sda2. Windows shows the partition as RAW.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen trying to install Kubuntu 10.04 32-bit (or Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit) it does not show me any hard drive to partition in the 'Disk Setup' (I've clicked all the buttons on that screen to see if I can encourage it!) and will not let me past that point in the installation process (because, obviously, no root file system has been defined). I have done something very bad to my computer. As an aid to selling my computer, I decided to (try to) install Windows 7. I booted into a live Ubuntu CD and used Gparted to reformat my hard drive. After several issues with the Windows boot CD I decided to pull up FastBuild Utility, and did something which included deleting LD and Defining LD again. Didn't make any difference with the Win 7 install. I am now trying to return my computer to a functional state in the sanctuary of Kubuntu 10.04.
Tried installing Win XP which I have installed successfully on another computer. Got an error message: "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" - presumed that was because of something I did with FastBuild Utility (2006). I've tried as many different options in this as I think could make a difference. Booted into DR-DOS and deleted partitions and created a FAT 32 partition. Booting into the live Ubuntu 10.04 CD again and used GParted to create an NTFS Primary Partition taking up all the hard drive. As above and deleting all partitions in GParted. Checking into BIOS and changing the SATA Operation from 'RAID On' to 'RAID Autodetect / ATA' (Now changed back again to the default 'RAID On.').
Loaded Defaults in BIOS - I've been running Ubuntu 10.04 x64 on it since it came out with these settings. At all points I have tried to install Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit, Kubuntu 10.04 32 bit (and Win XP) with no success. In the Kubuntu install, when I get to the Disk Setup part of the installation process it offers me no information whatsoever. My hard drive has all partitions deleted because of my last action in GParted. May need to define a partition. What as? I'm still convinced that my playing in FastBuild Utility (2006) is probably the root cause of this, and so quite likely to be a good place to go to solve this. I think I've set everything as it was, but can't be 100% on that.
