A part of my hd is ntfs (where I keep my windows and windows files). I edited it to be flagged as "bootable" in the disk tools that comes with ubuntu 10.10, and now it wont list as a file system in ubuntu (in other words I cant access it).

~50gig Windows 7 - NTFS
~100gig Ubuntu - EXT3
~100gig Snow Leopard - HFS+
~100gig Extended Partition
-- ~100gig Swap Disk - exFat
I wanted to delete the Snow Leopard partition and format the Swap Disk partition to something else. exFat was causing major file size bloat on small files. QT sdk bloated to like 11 gigs or something ridiculous like that. Anyways, I loaded up an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS live cd and gparted then deleted the Snow Leopard partition. Gparted said "Mission Accomplished" and tried to rescan the drive, but never found it. At this point I restarted the computer, a dell laptop, which didn't boot with an unable to find a bootable device error. The ubuntu live cd doesn't see the drive anymore. gparted scans for drives indefinitely and fdisk -l has no output.
Should the first bootable partition start from sector 1 on a hard disk? or Can it be created anywhere on the disk? I am using fdisk to create the bootable partition.

I know how partition using Windows but from Linux, that I don't know.
I have been having problems hibernating my windows 7 partition recently. It happened approximately right after I set up the dual boot.
I have found other topics where it says to make sure that the windows 7 partition is marked as the active partition. I have since done so and it has not changed anything. I did it with Partition Magic on Windows. I did find it suspicious though that my Dell Recovery partition is labeled as boot while the Windows one is marked as Active and System.
However when I looked at it using disk utility in Ubuntu the windows 7 partition is marked as Bootable while the recovery partition is not.
Hibernation works on Ubuntu with a couple error messages while shutting down and some weird screen issues while booting up. But it ends up working decently.
Under Disk Utility the Ubuntu Partition is not marked as Bootable. Should it be?
Just ran into a problem involving mdadm, a disk which had been in a raid array, and an attempt to reformat. Basically, I went to reformat some partitions which had been in raid, and one of them threw the error andy@andy-desktop:~$ sudo mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb5 mke2fs 1.41.11 (14-Mar-2010) /dev/sdb5 is apparently in use by the system; will not make a filesystem here! An attempt to umount revealed it was not mounted. lvdisplay and fuser did not reveal anything to me, so I just started looking around. I was graphically navigating /dev and noticed a /dev/md_d0 which did not look like /dev/md_d1 etc (it was missing a little arrow). I had not seen this notation before (my raid was md0), but figured it couldn't hurt to try stopping it.
andy@andy-desktop:~$ sudo mdadm --detail /dev/md_d0
mdadm: md device /dev/md_d0 does not appear to be active.
andy@andy-desktop:~$ sudo mdadm --stop /dev/md_d0
mdadm: stopped /dev/md_d0
After this, the partition formatted fine! I saw a lot of instructions including zeroing the partition and removing a logical volume, but the above was the only thing which worked for me! Just posted it in case it helps someone else. I know I've not been terribly technical!
I got a new hard drive 2TB for extending the storage. I am working on fedora15 and would like to format the disk as a linux partition and external hard drive. me how to format this disk and partitioning!

View 2 Replies View Relatedi have instaled ubuntu 11.04 wubi on my pc with windows 7. i installed and everything was going ok i navigate on ubuntu already. but the problems star here i went on my ubuntu to the partition section and i format my windows partion to be the home partion and changed the nfts to ext, i did the upgrades but i forgot that theyr running yet and i restart my computer when it boot again it gaves me an error:

and the windows7 says that i have to instal again. so i went to another pc and i made a cd boot and a pen boot. i burned the iso (downloaded from the ubuntu oficial site the 11.04 32 bit version) image to the cd and pen drive prperly, i adjust my boot options to star from usb or cd rom and nothing im struck.
So I tried adding a new, 2nd hard drive to my Ubuntu 9.04 desktop for some additional storage and only managed to kill my system so that it won't boot up anymore (I just get a blinking cursor after the BIOS does its thing).I could sure use a little help getting back to a functioning system, and then adding the second drive. I tried following the instructions from this link to add the 2nd drive:

I currently run a dual boot with Windows Vista and Ubuntu Lucid. I have been using Ubuntu for quite a while now, but kept around Windows "just in case." I have decided that keeping Windows is unnecessary and my Ubuntu partition is running out of space. I was wondering how I could format the Windows partition and add that space to the Ubuntu partition without having to format my entire computer.

What I believe has happened is that I've corrupted the partition table. Essentially one of my partitions' ending point exceeds the maximum number of cylinders/sectors on my drive.
Essentially I have the same problem as on the thread @ [url] but do not know how to fix this and am afraid to reformat/partition based on sectors without really knowing what I'm doing here.

Where did the partition table go? The device had one ext3 partition something around 4GB(size of USB storage device). I need to restore few files from this device.
I'm new to linux and this is my first post. I have two SATA hard disks of 160 GB each. I have windows 7 on one of the disks and the other one is left empty (Unused). When I tried to install open SUSE 11.2, I select the expert partioner. I could see the disks as,
and not as /dev/sda or /dev/sdb. Under the disks section, i could see sda and sdb. But when i tried to select sdb and try to add a new partition, I get a message, "Disk in use, cannot add partition" .I want to install SUSE on the unused disk.
Configuration:

hard disks: Seagate 160GB x 2
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 to dual-boot with XP Home on my Asus 1005HA netbook. The main hard drive is an OCZ Vertex 2 SSD. I've tried all the common tools for accessing the Ubuntu partition from inside XP, but none of them appears to work. Ext2IFS didn't let me assign drive letters - in fact, it doesn't seem to detect the Ubuntu partition at all. The Ext2IFS config tool in Control Panel looks like this (the SSD is 120 GB, and the Linux partition is 10GB as I recall):
explore2fs doesn't even start. Linux Reader can't open any drive, including flash drives and external HDDs.
I can't think of anything irregular about my system except the SSD. Could that be it?
I am completely new to Linux in general, and have recently downloaded Fedora 15 KDE spin. I tried dual-booting between Windows 7 and Fedora by shrinking one of my Windows partitions (I have two, this partition not containing the Windows installation). I tried shrinking it to 30 GB less than the total space available on the partition, and after pressing continue, received an error (which I unfortunately dismissed quickly and can't remember). In the file manager, Fedora showed that my partition changed from 1.3Tb to 1.2 Tb, but I couldn't access it. Upon rebooting into Windows, I still can't access it, receiving a "format drive before use" popup and then error stating that it is possibly of a different filesystem or corrupt.
Unfortunately, I stupidly didn't backup any of my data (which I will be sure to remember to do in the future). I installed EASEUS Partition Master 8.0.1 Home Edition, which states that my drive is still of NTFS filesystem and has the total space it should. However, upon clicking "check drive," it states there are no errors and when trying to "explore files," it doesn't find any (yet it shows the correct amount of used and unused space). I then tried running TestDisk, but only allows me to check my media drive E, which is my dvd drive that has my Fedora Live CD in it (which cannot be ejected manually or through Windows, an error stating it cannot be ejected). I didn't go through with TestDisk for my DVD drive because I needed to verify the type of partition (which to my knowledge shouldn't even exist). It shows 700 something MiB / 600 something MiB. Although I have decent general knowledge about computers, I am a complete novice when it comes to doing something like this.
Do Ubuntu have a build in partitioning application. What is the name this application and where is it located?
Also is it possible to create or resize other (out-side) partitions from my Ubuntu partition? I have a 1000GB drive and Ubunta now has the first 100GB. I want to work with the other 900GB of disk space useing the partiton tool from WITH-IN Ubuntu while running, if possible.
What is the name of this tool and where is it. Are there more than one partitioning tools inside the latest version of Ubuntu?
changing the bootble parttion in linux using lilo. Presently when i boot the system i will be booting from primary partition(/dev/sda1) . Is there any commando to change the bootable partition to secondary(/dev/sda2)

Well I currently have a windows partition currently formatted as ext3 which has the partition flag bootable (It previously had Windows Vista on it). I also have a windows partition with NTFS filesystem with Windows 7 on it which is not bootable because the previously mentioned partition became formatted by me. And I also have more partitions for Ubuntu, which is currently the only OS working.

So my question is can I delete the partition called "Inter" and recreate a new partition and format it again with ext3? It has the partition flag bootable, won't I loose all of the partitions this way? It's also the primary partition? Is there a big risk?
I am following the very basic Software RAID instructions associated with 10.04. I am installing using 64 bit Ubuntu 10.04.1 as well as 10.04.2. Hardware is an HP ProLiant ML110 G6. A couple months back I installed on another ML110 G6 using the 10.04.1 install and was able to successfully install a more complicated RAID install. On that system I ran with three partitions. The swap & boot partition was setup as RAID 1 and the third partition was setup as RAID 5. This system had four 1 TB drives installed. That system boots to OS and at this time seems to be just fine.
I am trying a new install on another ML110 G6 but this time using two 2 TB drives under software RAID 1. Following the very basic instructions I am trying to create two partitions per drive. The first one as RAID 1 Swap and the second partition is also RAID 1 but should be marked bootable. This is where I am having problems. I am not allowed to mark the partition as bootable. The only way that flag seems to be changeable is if I leave the partition set to ext4. But once I change it to physical volume for RAID I lose the ability to change the boot flag.
I have tried both 10.04.2 as well as 10.04.2 install media thinking that was the problem but no go. The SATA mode setting is set to compatible which is what the working ML110 G6 is set to as well.
I am currently at a loss. Since the instructions are so simplistic, I am thinking this must be a hardware issue some how.
I am using Ubuntu 11.04 on my sisters computer which I am borrowing until my laptop gets fixed by Dell *sigh*
The only catch was that I had to remove the virus thats been plaguing this computer any means necessary my plan was to delete the windows 7 partition and put Ubuntu in its place temporarily.
My sister didn't have the Windows 7 DVD that was given to her *sigh again* but she did still have the key labeled on the side of the machine. So my plan than included to download that .iso of Windows 7, and then use setup.exe.
I am using a 8 GB usb flash to create a F13 Live Media. I created it using the livecd-creator. But when I use it to try to boot, it says "No bootable partition in table". What's wrong? I did some searches on google, but didn't find a solution.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI noticed that when using the "daily built images" from Squeeze via Netinst, during the disk partitioner, I am un-able to make the /boot partition bootable.or some reason I can't enable the 'boot' flag on several different ISO attempts and differenthardware vendors. The only thing I can see is that this is an issue with the netinst ISO image from the daily built images. Has anyone seen this or is this a known issue / bug? I don't want to file a bug report if possible but I searched and couldn't find anything on this. I doubt I am the only one who's experienced this so far.

I have followed our procedure to the T but when i install the card I get a No bootable partition error. Here is what I'm doing. I go into Gnome terminal and change to my directory to "cd dcmsetupdir" (this may not be important but I want to give as much info as I can. Then I type "sudo ./format_cf". once this is complete (no errors detected), I type in "sudo ./install_cf" this seems to install correctly but when I boot up the unit with the card in I get the no bootable partition error.
