Ubuntu Installation :: Copy OS Partition From One Disk To Another?

I spend the vast majority of my time in Ubuntu, but every so often I still encounter the odd errand that requires a free copy of Windows that came with my hardware.
So I have Windows 7 on my laptop which I like slightly better than XP and a whole lot better than Vista. I am not in there a lot besides that its required for a web design class and sometimes for a few stubborn games, but I would very much like to copy my Windows 7 partition to a 100gb partition on my TB HDD.
How do I do it? Keep in mind, I am barely two tiers above noob on a scale of 1 to 20. I am working on it though.
I also want this partition to be bootable. I dont care if I lose the rest of the data on the disk. I want to redo everything anyway. I definitely want it to boot though, not just for the data to exist.

I recently installed Linux to run a few Linux based tools on a disk images I have, and I can't seem to copy the disk image over to my ext3 partition.
The particular distibution I'm using is BackTrack 4 r2, which is Ubuntu based. I can't seem to find specifically which version of Ubuntu is being used. The disk image is 108GB. It is currently located on a NTFS partition on a SATA hard drive connected directly to the computer. The ext3 partition is located on a second SATA hard drive connected to the same computer. It has 200GB total. I do not remember exactly how much free space it had but "df -h" showed a lot more than 108GB. The computer has 4GB of RAM and I gave it 8GB of swap space.
At this point it has been running for more than 12 hours. This is far longer than I would expect it to take had I been copying the file under Windows. How ever I do not have much experience with Linux, so if it's supose to take this long please let me know. I am planning on letting it run until I wake up tomorrow.
"cp -v" hasn't been very verbose at all. The only sign I have that indicates the computer is still trying to do something is the HDD light on my chasis that has stayed lit this whole time.

I have a broken DVD drive and no others available right now to burn a DVD iso to so I'd like to use a empty hard disk instead.
I've tried Unetbootin but that only copies a few megabytes of files - the rest of the image data in the ISO is ignored.
I have verified the ISO is valid and working with VirtualBox. It's MD5 hash is also as expected. But I need to boot at the real bios not an emulated one.
I've also tried things like:
sudo cat /disk/image.iso > /dev/sdb1
and that got "Permission denied" -

I got a new hard disk for my laptop and I want to move my Gentoo installation from old HDD to new.
Most simple guides recommend use of dd to copy the whole partition byte by byte.
I'm moving to the new drive because I don't have enough space on the old drive, so I don't want to simply clone the partition. Instead I need the destination partition to be bigger. Would dd work well in that case?
Assuming that I use same partition types on the new drive, would I be able to use simple cp with appropriate settings?

I have a 160GB harddrive which I installed a F12, would like to upgrade to a bigger drive, but I hate to have to re-install everything.
Recommend a good disk copy utility? The utility should be able to not only copy files, but boot sector and everything. So I just need to make a copy, change my BIOS to boot from the new drive and run everything as before.

Previously I have Centos 5.3 installed. Eventually I upgraded the systems to Centos 5.4 Now is it possible to generate an ISO and burn into a DVD to make a new copy of Centos 5.4 installation disk? This is far better than downloading.

I downloaded the x86 server version for Lucid twice today. Both times before burn the md5 match those published on the Ubuntu site. I am attempting to install the system on a Dell poweredge 2500. 2x 1.4 gb P4 procs, 1 gb ram, 750 GB HDD (raid) Boot to installer. it goes through the standard language checks, keyboard, checks for cdrom, then attempts to start copying files.
It gets to 17% copy on fs-core-modules-2.6.32.21-generic-di and hangs there for 5 minutes or so. Then comes back with the error that it could not get the file and asks if I want to retry. all retries lead back to this error. As I said, MD5 is exact, burner does not complain of a bad burn, and disk is closed at the end of the burn. so, has anyone else been able to install Lucid server x86? burned four disks today, one pair on two different burners. All fail at 17% retrieving that file.

I have a very specific issue that I am having trouble resolving. I have an old laptop and a new laptop with a smaller HDD. I want to copy the windows partition from the new lappy to the old bigger HDD so I have room for Ubuntu. All of my files are on a Maverick install on the old lappy. How can I get all my files and windows to the old HDD and into the new laptop. I am a little stuck on this one because of my limited options.

i have amd athlon x2 3gb RAM ddr2 two hdd one 80gb other 1tb in this computer i got only ubuntu all disk in EXT4.i want to copy 10gb many file of 700mb or 1gb ( many linux ISO )the transfer is 1mb/s this is SOOO SLOW.i did a touch /forcefsck just in case but nothing happen it is still slow!!what might be the problem ??

I recently installed Jaunty in my departmental machine which is having 70 GB harddisk and 512 MB RAM. Before installing I partitioned the Hard disk by using Gparted of Live CD into Four compartments namely
1. Primary partition of 30 GB of file type ext3
2. Extended partition of 39 GB which I divided again into two logical Partition of 20 GB and 19 GB. Labelled it as D and E
3. 1 GB of swap partition
I installed the Jaunty in primary partition, gave the mount point as /The problem is I am not able to copy or save file in the extended partition namely D and E

Currently I only have Ubuntu installed on my laptop taking up my main drive. I'd like to partition my disk into two separate partitions. Whenever I open up terminal and type fdisk /dev/sda I always get: unable to open /dev/sda despite the fact that System>Administration>Disk Utility shows it as my main device. (/dev/sda1 is the main volume)

I'm trying to install 10.10 on a sata disk. In terminal, dmesg recognizes the disk at /dev/sda. The installer recognizes it as well, but the partition area is blank and the option are greyed out. How can I go on? BTW, on the disk currently Fedora 14 is (fresh) installed and working fine, but a software install script is written specifically for Ubuntu. That's why I need to change to Ubuntu and it's no hardware problem.

S.M.A.R.T.tells me my primary fedora drive has lots of bad blocks,so I ordered a used identical drive from ebay.I want to do the very basic process of making a full backup of my existing drive - so as to replace it with a more or less identical replacement. Logically identical - not necewsarily sector to sector identical.im not literate in unix and its children - and seem to find a plethora of descriptinos of how to do what I want to do. which is
1. format the drive - what you may call low level format - ie op sys independent.
2. create a partition system compatible with my existing disk.
3. copy everything from my existing disk to the new disk.
4. put existing disk on the shelf as a backup and start to use new disk.

had 9.04 install on a dual proc home built system that was running fine until a recent update wiped out grub. Since I have all my data backed up, I decided just to install 10.04. I select Use Entire Disk but when Ubuntu tries to install, I get this error:The ext4 file system creation in partition #1 of Serial ATA nvidia_dacaecb (mirror) failed.

When trying to install Kubuntu 10.04 32-bit (or Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit) it does not show me any hard drive to partition in the 'Disk Setup' (I've clicked all the buttons on that screen to see if I can encourage it!) and will not let me past that point in the installation process (because, obviously, no root file system has been defined). I have done something very bad to my computer. As an aid to selling my computer, I decided to (try to) install Windows 7. I booted into a live Ubuntu CD and used Gparted to reformat my hard drive. After several issues with the Windows boot CD I decided to pull up FastBuild Utility, and did something which included deleting LD and Defining LD again. Didn't make any difference with the Win 7 install. I am now trying to return my computer to a functional state in the sanctuary of Kubuntu 10.04.
Tried installing Win XP which I have installed successfully on another computer. Got an error message: "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" - presumed that was because of something I did with FastBuild Utility (2006). I've tried as many different options in this as I think could make a difference. Booted into DR-DOS and deleted partitions and created a FAT 32 partition. Booting into the live Ubuntu 10.04 CD again and used GParted to create an NTFS Primary Partition taking up all the hard drive. As above and deleting all partitions in GParted. Checking into BIOS and changing the SATA Operation from 'RAID On' to 'RAID Autodetect / ATA' (Now changed back again to the default 'RAID On.').
Loaded Defaults in BIOS - I've been running Ubuntu 10.04 x64 on it since it came out with these settings. At all points I have tried to install Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit, Kubuntu 10.04 32 bit (and Win XP) with no success. In the Kubuntu install, when I get to the Disk Setup part of the installation process it offers me no information whatsoever. My hard drive has all partitions deleted because of my last action in GParted. May need to define a partition. What as? I'm still convinced that my playing in FastBuild Utility (2006) is probably the root cause of this, and so quite likely to be a good place to go to solve this. I think I've set everything as it was, but can't be 100% on that.

This is my situation, I had installed Ubuntu in my whole drive in 640Gig. Now, I want to partition it, without affecting my Ubuntu operating system. I just want 320Gig for my Ubuntu and 320 for my Windows.
I know how partition using Windows but from Linux, that I don't know.

I can take apart my computer and fix a problem and then re-install the partitions. Hopefully I won't have to re-install, but I want to make backups just in case
-HP laptop with a windows (NTFS) and an Ubuntu (ext3) partition ~ 500GB total
-Iomega 1TB external hard drive partitioned into a 500GB NTFS storage, 250GH BLANK ext3 Linux Backup, and 250GB BLANK NTFS Windows Backup.
I want to copy my windows and linux to their respective 250GB spaces on the External HD.
1.) Can you direct me to places on the net that describes this in detail?
2.) Can I copy a partition while running that partition?
3.) Will copying C:/ in windows over to the external HD copy entire partition?
4.) Can I copy a Laptop partition to a external HD partition that is bigger?
5.) Do I have to use partition manager software or can I do this from terminal/cmd prompt?

I recently made the move from windows to Linux and I am happy to having got rid off all the MS stuff. Trying out a few distros I decided on using Ubuntu and Mandriva (wife likes the flashier stuff, what can I say ).
My question is how can I partition my hard disk in such a way that my /home is separate from both the Ubuntu and Mandriva part but accessed by both as my default home folder.

My primary drive is 250GB and has the root, home and var (I'd read it's good to put var on a separate partition for MythTV which I'm planning on doing) on separate partitions. I have a second 1TB drive that I'll be using to backup the 250GB drive and also host less critical data. I've created two partitions on this drive, one 250GB and the other covering the rest of the drive. I'd like to move the Videos directory out of Home on the 250GB onto the 1TB drive but can't find a definitive way of doing this. Should I just follow this guide for moving the home folder to a new partition? Next question is when performing a backup of the 250GB drive how do I make sure it's going to the 250GB partition on the 1TB drive? Can the different partitions be mounted separately?

First of all I am a long time Fedora user and now I need help getting it on my laptop. It has Windows 7 loaded (no Windows cd) and a 500GB dynamic disk. I shrunk and re-partitioned but Linux can't see the partition I made for it. I want to save Windows and had this brainwave lol. I was wondering if I could copy c:*.* to a USB drive; delete partitions and re-partition with basic partitions. Then install Linux on say the third partition; then using Linux copy Windows files from the USB onto the new C partition. Then using my Recover dvd's repair Windows. Great idea right? But I bet it won't work; any thoughts?

Since I no longer use windows, I want to move ubuntu to the first place.
What do I need to change in configuration files, grub and anywhere else?
Shoudl I keep swap where it is or move it, too?

I have tried to install Debian from various .iso files over the last couple of days. However, the installations always get stuck on "Partition disks" section. On the screen, the progress bar for "Starting up the partitioner" keep getting stuck at 50%, and refuses to progress further. I understand that it might take a little time to scan the hard drive, so as an experiment, I left it on over night. However, it is still stuck there when I woke up 6 hours later.

After I have installed all my programs, I need to install windows and I need visual studio. So I was thinking of taking 20 GB from the /home directory and using that for windows. I can use gparted. However, many posters on here think it is best to use gparted by booting from the disk. However, I cannot do this, as I don't have any DVD drivers. And I can't really afford to buy one just for this reason. What is the best way to do this?

I'm installing RHEL 4.x to a hard disk that already has windows 7 enterprise installed. I would like to dual-boot both the OSes. The hard drive size is about 220 GB (of which windows 7 occupies about 50 GB).Now, is there any free and friendly tool that I can download to partition this drive ?RHEL comes with a text mode (disk druid) to partition and I could not figure out how to resize the existing windows partition. So, I'm assuming that I need to abort the linux install now and proceed to boot from another CD that contains a good partitioning tool and then later resume boot from RHEL install disk.Also, what should my partitions look like ? I'm a linux user for some time now and most stuff I can figure out myself. Though, this one drives me crazy and I did not find any information on the internet.I have a partition, say, Code: /dev/sda1 , which is 128MB big. When I copy it using Code: dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/home/me/backup_sda1.img , the resulting file is 134MB big. Now my problem is that I want to copy that partition as-is to a CF card, which does not work because the image is bigger than the partition on the CF card.Why does dd create bigger files? Shouldn't it be exactly same sized like the source?

how much disk space a non manual dual boot uses? I've always been guided by a person knowing much about linux when doing my dual boot (and been guided to do the partitions manualy), but this person is not there for the moment and I need to do a dual boot on my son's computer. Since he'll need his Windows computer mainly for games I wouldn't want Ubuntu to take 2/3 of his disk space (which is about 250 Gb I think, let's say 50 Gb would be perfect for the Ubuntu)
And I'm not sure how I could change this later, cause in my own computer I cannot find how to resize (I cannot unmount neither resize the partitions I have) I don't mean I need to do this on my computer but I mean I wouldn't want to try out anything if I'm not sure it be could restored in 1,2,3. And partitions is such a thing. If I remember correctly I've done dual boot by default (i mean without doing the partitions manualy) and it does about 50/50 ?
