had 9.04 install on a dual proc home built system that was running fine until a recent update wiped out grub. Since I have all my data backed up, I decided just to install 10.04. I select Use Entire Disk but when Ubuntu tries to install, I get this error:The ext4 file system creation in partition #1 of Serial ATA nvidia_dacaecb (mirror) failed.

I've searched this forum and found numerous references to these error messages but cannot make head nor tail of the diagnostic suggestions. Apart from anything else they suggest strings of command lines which I don't understand and can't enter anyway since they don't correspond to my keyboard layout (if I hit > or ) something completely different appears on the screen). Is there someone here who can provide a step-by-step solution in lay language? Or is there such a thing as a bootable file which can be downloaded and inserted into my CD drive to correct this problem?

View 3 Replies View RelatedAs I have no blank cds handy right now, I had to go the way descirbed here:URL...But when I seect my partition and / (no sub dirs, an empty ext3 formated 6.8GB partition, exclusivly for that usage) it tells me there ws no installation media found and the search path got automagically adjusted to /imges/image.img.And ideas howto fix that? Or how to install fedora from harddisk (without big fuss)?

After trying to install and partition with a live CD I restarted the PC and What do you know it reads Starting Windows 7 , Opensuse installation Completely Gone Wasted like it never even took place , and it left a gift a 100 GB less of Space on the HD . at least thats what it reads out ... how to get my full HDD back ?

I'm installing this on an HP XW6600 with hardware raid striped.
I can use the supergrub rescue CD to boot to ubutu after, but whatever I do doesn't seem to get grub installed.
Any ideas on how to proceed? I'm guessing I need to install grub from scratch.
I have tried to install Debian from various .iso files over the last couple of days. However, the installations always get stuck on "Partition disks" section. On the screen, the progress bar for "Starting up the partitioner" keep getting stuck at 50%, and refuses to progress further. I understand that it might take a little time to scan the hard drive, so as an experiment, I left it on over night. However, it is still stuck there when I woke up 6 hours later.
View 8 Replies View RelatedHave burned a DVD of 11.4 64bit and am trying to install alongside Windows 7. The boot from the disk starts, I get a SUSE splash screen and initial menu. I check install source (F4) is set to CDROM. When I then select "install" the kernel loads, but then it goes wrong. Whatever I do I get "No repository found". It's almost as though, having loaded the kernel from the DVD, the installer can no longer see the disk.

The Install program is failing to see the hard disk!
Now heres the really weird bit. The live cd can see the drive just fine.
I have created partitions using gparted and the disktool also sees the drive just fine but as soon as I go back to the installer it shows no hard disk!
It's a SATA drive which I suspect might be a part of the problem.
Is there a way I can install without the install program?
Is there a way to make the install program see the drive?
This is ubuntu 9.10 desktop.

I've been struggling with suspend to disk (hibernate if you prefer) for a while, it works after a fresh boot and for several days' worth of overnight hibernation as I go about my work, but eventually it stops working - it gets to the splash screen but the bar only makes it a little way to the left before stopping, and then after a timeout the system just returns to the "session locked" screen - no real error messages.
I've done my best to try to find out what's causing it to break but I'm really struggling, the suspend process doesn't appear to write anything helpful to the dmesg log or the /var/log/pm-suspend.log - the only thing that I've seen at about the right point in time is cifsd, but I can't be sure that it's a problem with cifs as hibernate continues to work immediately after mounting windows shares with cifs.

The system has two arrays (one data, the other backup), each of the same size in RAID6 with ext4 fs, connected to separate 3ware 9690 controller cards. I had to increase the size of the arrays from 8TB to 12TB. No problems - added the drives, migrated the new disks into the array, rebooted the server, and everything is visible. I unmounted the drives and then attempted to grow the partition (it's a single partition), starting with the backup array, using gparted. It sees the unallocated space but when I try to grow the partition into the unallocated space it fails. Here's the gparted error details:

Am trying to install Hupervisor and Tools but during the install I get the message that xen itself can't be installed while it needs 20MB space.My boot partition is already maxed. At least that is what the partitioner is telling me that 70MB is the maximum setting.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a problem that I can't login to SUSE in graphical mode. I get to the login prompt; enter my username and password; SUSE starts to do the login but then crashes back to the login prompt. Looking in /var/log/messages doesn't tell me anything useful. However, I noticed that my SUSE system partition is full (at 20 GB). So I think this is the culprit that is stopping my login.
Unfortunately, I can't extend my system partition as it is ext4 (SUSE default) but parted (from SUSE 11.2 live cd) complains that it can't do anything with ext4.

Having trouble installing 'Squeeze' 6.0.1a-amd64-netinst on a new AMD64 system.The installer boots and runs fine until it gets to hard disk detection. Then it hangs for about 20 minutes showing a blue screen, during which time the HDD-activity light flickers every 5 seconds. Eventually it says it can't detect a hard disk, and displays a (longish) list of possible drivers; no idea which, if any, would suit.Anyone else installed (successfully or otherwise) on this combo?

I know are other ways to undo the encryption, but for various reasons I'd rather just do a quick reinstall and start fresh.Currently, I dual boot linux and windows, each with their respective partitions. When using the manual partitioner on the fedora 11 installer on the live cd, both for 64 bit and 32 bit, it will not allow me to create a new partition. I understand that I have four primary partitions and it cannot have more than that, so I tried deleting one of the partitions, then creating the new ext4 partition for F11. It still fails and gives me the same bugsee attachment)
how to read this, especially since there is so much there. I see at the top it says that there are 4 primary partitions, could it possibly still be seeing 4 primary partitions when trying to create the new one, even though I am deleting one of them? Other than this, I truly have no idea what else I can do.

Currently I only have Ubuntu installed on my laptop taking up my main drive. I'd like to partition my disk into two separate partitions. Whenever I open up terminal and type fdisk /dev/sda I always get: unable to open /dev/sda despite the fact that System>Administration>Disk Utility shows it as my main device. (/dev/sda1 is the main volume)
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu on my laptop (x200s, XPpro with 230 Gb), and created a 30Gb partition therefore. At the end of the install, the screen remained orange for a while, without any disk activity. I forced the laptot to reboot, but Ubntu was no option when the machine restarted. However, my XP partition has been reduced by 30 Gb. Does anybody have an idea about what I should do to either get Ubuntu installed or recover the disk space?

I did an independent verification of the DVD and zero errors found. Download was from Fedora's own torrent, so files should be verified anyway. I spend the vast majority of my time in Ubuntu, but every so often I still encounter the odd errand that requires a free copy of Windows that came with my hardware.
So I have Windows 7 on my laptop which I like slightly better than XP and a whole lot better than Vista. I am not in there a lot besides that its required for a web design class and sometimes for a few stubborn games, but I would very much like to copy my Windows 7 partition to a 100gb partition on my TB HDD.
How do I do it? Keep in mind, I am barely two tiers above noob on a scale of 1 to 20. I am working on it though.
I also want this partition to be bootable. I dont care if I lose the rest of the data on the disk. I want to redo everything anyway. I definitely want it to boot though, not just for the data to exist.
I'm trying to install 10.10 on a sata disk. In terminal, dmesg recognizes the disk at /dev/sda. The installer recognizes it as well, but the partition area is blank and the option are greyed out. How can I go on? BTW, on the disk currently Fedora 14 is (fresh) installed and working fine, but a software install script is written specifically for Ubuntu. That's why I need to change to Ubuntu and it's no hardware problem.

View 1 Replies View RelatedFinally updates are broken - I've been able to use my upgraded F12 system for some time, faithfully keeping up with f10, then f11. Just yesterday it finally broke:
Test Transaction Errors: installing package kernel-2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.i686 needs 10MB on the /boot filesystem
It would appear that the most recent kernel update has broken the 10MB barrier initially set by the version I first installed (for the boot partition). Needless to say, I have quite an investment in this machine, and of course no time to back it all up and do a fresh F12 install. I am hoping someone out there can give me a bulletproof way to steal some space and expand the boot partition...
I have xp/fc8 on an older ide drive and just installed a new sata 1T and planned to put fc10 on it but in the process I killed my fc8 installation. I told the installer that the other disks were off limits but it was somewhat confusing at the bootloader page. So, I suspect that I told it boot off the fc8 disk. If that is the case is there a way to restore the fc8 install by somehow rescuing the /boot partition on the fc8 disk?
