Oct 11, 2010I want to use the .debs from testing and experimental on Ubuntu 10.4. I added the repository info from debian sources but it doesn't show up as an upgrade. I know about downloading from OO.org but I want the new versions of go.org that debian has.

Jan 22, 2010I have been using grub2 experimental from fzielcke's ppa. I tried to use the gfxmenu by modifying grub.cfg downloaded from grub.gibibit.com and overlaying the overlay file from that website. When I rebooted by laptop, it shows the graphical menu for about 1 to 2 secs before rebooting my laptop. Has anyone else experienced the same problem (and maybe found the solution)?Alternatively I also tried to download the source from grub's experimental branch. Everything went smoothly until I issued the make command... It is missing some files e.g. loader.S (an include file for ~/experimental/kern/i386/pc/startup.S). Can anyone help me obtain the complete source files for the experimental branch?

Jul 6, 2011I started using Ubuntu Karmic on my old laptop w/ATI GPU and quickly realized the benefits of the xorg-edgers PPA. I understand that these packages are considered bleeding-edge, and do sometimes cause breakage. For me though , the pluses have vastly outweighed the minuses, which were negligible. I can't use any proprietary drivers w/my old card, and 3d is basically non-functional with the standard open ATI drivers. With xorg-edgers, I can use Compiz, play OpenArena and Quake Live.
Now after over a year and a half, 15 kernels and nearly 4 releases later, I'm really not sure how much progress has been made with the mainstream open ATI drivers, though I have been enjoying 3d with xorg-edgers. I really don't know how much of the bleeding-edge performance is due to the drivers, the kernel, xserver, or other libraries. I'm just looking forward to the day when my GPU is fully functional OOTB. how packages go from experimental to mainstream? Speculate on when open ATI development will be complete, and will that be all that is required for properly accelerated graphics?

1. How experimental is experimental at this point? Is the specific mesa-dri-drivers-experimental package more-or-less static?
2. Would I be better off with Mesa 7.6 from the repository or 7.7? What would be the best approach before installing it?

Jun 28, 2011I tried to make Compiz work using the experimental 3D support of the free Nvidia driver, because I am suffering from a bug in the proprietary driver (click here for launchpad entry). The free driver I mean is the one that shows up as "Experimental 3D support for NVIDIA cards" in the "Additional Drivers" manager (note: for some reason, this option will only present itself when no proprietary driver is currently active).
Now the strange thing is: the driver does not provide 3d support, and behaves generally awful (lots of glitches and so on) when I boot my system normally. But when instead I boot from the grub menu into recovery mode, then select "failsafe graphics", and then select "restart X", the whole thing works perfectly! So now I am running the experimental 3d driver, I have compositing working, 3d animations on docky. Somehow, the failsafe boot sequence does something right that my normal boot sequence does not. When I reboot in normal mode, everything is screwed up again.
I have no idea what statistics about my system I should include here, because I really have no idea what could possibly be wrong. I am running 32bits Natty in Classic mode, on an Ahtlon Dual Core 4850e machine, with a GeForce 6150 LE graphics card. These are the normal and recovery entries in my grub.cfg:

Why is there none for wheezy? Is it a temporary dependency thing or...? I've googled this but there has been no kind of answer anywhere. Right now I'm using the frickelplatz apotsid repository as they package the most recent version of wine but if I could use a standard debian repository I would.

Jun 21, 2010It has been haunting me for weeks and I haven't been able to fix it so far: When I installed the wireless driver 43XX series on my laptop using a wired internet, I saw the wireless network for a while and after I rebooted my system, My kernel(31) got corrupted and I got error "kernel Panic (and some sync error)",Thus I started using an older kernel(14),Now When I install wireless driver or mobile broadband driver(wvdial), they get vanished after the reboot and my mobile device modem isn't detected.But they are installed in my system(as shown by synaptic package manager but doesn't seemt to work) I desperately want to use mobile broadband.

Now that it is installed there is constant screen flicker but apart from that all other aspects of the system are working fine. In the display menu i am unable to change the refresh rate. Jun 13, 2011There is one thing missing (I think) a clear guide to clearing out Nvidia and replacing it with nouveau. For all but hardened gamers, nouveau on 11.4 delivers. It also removes one more barrier to what I think is the intended goad of Tumbleweed.The problem IMHO is not that there are no clear guides. The problem is there are too many. No sooner does one person do a guide (that is clear) and someone else who does not like some point writes another guide that they think is more clear (but in fact is less clear in other aspects). And this goes on ad infinitum.IMHO we have too many guides - many of which are sufficient clear ... but the VAST number only serves to confuse users more.
Having typed that, IMHO this is NOT a Tumbleweed specific issue, but its MUCH WIDER in scope and hence does not belong as a discussion in this Tumbleweed thread.

Feb 17, 2010I am attempting to load CentOS 5 on an Acer 6900 desktop and I'm not even getting out of the starting gate. I am familiar with using linux but not the install procedure which is why I am beginning to dive into this. However, when I bring the system up off the Linux boot disk and go to install it's not even giving me the option of the controller so I can begin installing the os from the dvd-rom. This is what acer lists as the controller for the 6900: ich8 serial ata storage controller 2820 linux driver. I cannot find this driver for linux anywhere.

Jul 20, 2010I just installed Linux Mint 9 as a dual boot install with Win XP. Trying to activate wireless network card driver and video driver. Pops up: "You are not authorized to perform this action".How do I get authorized?
Now every time I boot Win XP, the Internet Explorer menu bar is all blacked out and goofy. If I log out and back in it corrects itself. If I reboot it's blacked out again. Re-installed IE8. Still blacks out.Also Firefox in Win XP crashes expectantly. It has NEVER crashed on me previously.

Oct 23, 2010No wireless networking. The ethernet works fine, and the wireless interface itself works well in Windows 7 (dual boot). Tried: Ndiswrapper, notoriously quirky, does not seem to work with the XP driver (the oldest driver available for the RTL8191SE). The linux driver offered on the manufacturer's website lacks any installation instructions. I have no clue how to install a linux driver. SUSE seems to have two network managers that are constantly complaining about control: Network Manager and Yast. Neither are great and I am left missing my Ubuntu.
However, my audio only seems to work on SUSE. I have tried almost every distro on this machine. Ubuntu lacked sound and wireless, Fedora played startup sounds, but would not play an mp3 or wav file (fiddling with the mixer did not help). And Fedora also lacked wireless support. PCLinuxOS, my favorite, lacked sound and wireless. Tried some oldies too. ELE, DSL, Puppy, Ubuntu Netbook remix, Vector, Browserpuppy, Crunchbang, Cruncheee (just for experimental sakes) and probably others I am not remembering. So far, installing a free linux distro has cost me 14 dvd-R's and countless hours of installing, reformatting and reinstalling. Part of me really wanted crunchbang to work, as I love the minimalism and blacked-out theme.
I need wireless network access. The wireless light remains red in Linux and pressing the key does nothing to start the device. In Windows 7 it always lights white and works perfectly. Why hasn't SUSE adopted a gui for ndiswrapper? Other distros have it. Why is my brand new laptop, which is by no means abnormal in make or configuration, not 100% supported natively by any Linux distro? I just updated to the new kernel yesterday. So I should be running the most modern operating system available. Yet good-ol Windows 7 is my only fully functional environment.

However when I plug it in, the only thing dmesg mentiones is: Code:usb 5-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2I've tried to look for a kernel driver in "make menuconfig" by pressing "/" and typing 232. Nothing about RS-232. Device Drivers -> Character drivers -> Serial drivers has 8250 and UART as a module. Device Drivers -> USB support -> USB serial converter support has in-kernel: USB generic serial driver, and FTDI Single port driver as a module, but it still isn't getting recognized.Is there some module i forgot to enable, or do i have to download a separate module from somewhere?
