Debian Multimedia :: Pinning Specific Package - Shotwell From Experimental

Jan 19, 2011

I'm using Debian testing but I want Shotwell (and nothing else) from experimental. I also like to be notified when there is an update to Shotwell in experimental. Will that be achieved if I add experimental to sources.conf and the following to preferences?
Package: shotwell
Pin: release a=experimental
Pin-Priority: 600

Debian :: Package Search Site And Stable, Sid, And Experimental All Have Packages For Wine

Aug 21, 2011

At first I thought it might be a free software thing but I went on the debian package search site and stable, sid, and experimental all have packages for wine. Why is there none for wheezy? Is it a temporary dependency thing or...? I've googled this but there has been no kind of answer anywhere. Right now I'm using the frickelplatz apotsid repository as they package the most recent version of wine but if I could use a standard debian repository I would.

Debian Multimedia :: Shotwell Not Publishing Into Facebook

Jun 18, 2015

I'm a desktop user and I rely heavily on Debian and shotwell to organize my images. I also use shotwell to publish images to a popular social networking site, Facebook. Recently I wasn't able to make shotwell publish into Facebook.

I was still on Debian Wheezy and decided it was time to dist-upgrade to Debian Jessie and hope that this would sort things out. It wasn't easy for me to upgrade - but I think I made a fairly satisfying one as I can normally use what I use my desktop for (work and entertainment).

I still cannot use shotwell to publish into Facebook.

Debian Multimedia :: Shotwell - Fail To Import Video With Correct Date

Jan 26, 2015

I'm on Debian Wheezy using Shotwell 0.12.3. I have a bunch of .MOV videos that I want to import to Shotwell. I choose import from folder and select copy pictures. The import proceeds and shotwell tells med the .MOV (and some .jpg:s) are imported. The pictures are imported with no problem and placed in an event 2014-10-19 as expected. But videos are placed in an event dated 2004-01-01 and not in 2014-10-19 where they belong. Obviously, Shotwell does not use the files last edit date. I though maybe there was some bad dates in the metadata and opened the files in both Totem and VLC player but concluded there is no such metadata available (as far as I can tell). So how does Shotwell determine the date for .MOV files? Where does 2004-01-01 come from? Seems random.

Then, I tried dragging all movies in Shotwell to the event where it really belongs. That is, where the recently imported photos got placed 2014-10-19. But instead of the videos beeing moved into that correct event, now all photos appears in the 2004-01-01 event.Undo that last step and close Shotwell. Then, instead I manually (in nautilus) copy the .mov files to the 2014-10-19 folder where the picures resides. Open Shotwell again which detects something happened and starts import the videos again. Unfortunatley they still show up in the 2004-01-01 event

Another wierd thing is if I manually (in nautilus) move the Shotwell 2004-01-01 folder away from the Pictures folder (out of reach for Shotwell). Then when I re-open Shotwell the event does not appear anymore - as expected. But If I try to once again import the videos, Shotwell tells me all videos are duplicates and does not import them!?! In other words, manually removing a folder from Shotwell mess up the database. And that database is obviously not used to populate the events tree in the gui.How do I get my video to appear in the correct event? Alternatively; is there a photo/video library in Debian that actually works?

Debian :: Pinning Prior To Upgrade

Sep 9, 2015

I am thinking about upgrading, again, from Wheezy to Jessie. When I had Jessie installed, prior to a crash, I noticed that some of the Gnome games in Jessie are not as esthetically pleasing as they were in Wheezy. Also, some of the games (eg. mines) were slower and seemed to use a lot more CPU resources. So my questions are:

1. If I pin those programs that I want to keep will that also pin the dependencies for those programs?
2. If those dependencies are pinned, how might that impact other programs, in Jessie, that might depend on later packages?
3.If I don't pin those programs that I want to keep is it possible to install those programs from Wheezy after I upgrade to Jessie, without causing issues with Jessie?

Debian :: Jessie Iceweasel Security And Apt-listbugs Pinning

Oct 11, 2015

I keep on trying to upgrade iceweasel on Jessie for a few months now and apt-listbugs always finds some scary bug so I pin the package. About 3 times I pin the package, wait a month or so, delete the apt-listbugs file and try again and it finds another grave bug. Right now it's this one:

Code: Select allgrave bugs of iceweasel (31.8.0esr-1~deb8u1 → 38.3.0esr-1~deb8u1) <Outstanding>
 b1 - #789955 - devscripts: [bts] "bts show" command displays error: (process:29614): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion 'sys_page_size == 0' failed

So I see my iceweasel version is "31.8.0esr-1~deb8u1" now and it looks a bit old. Is there any security issues I need to be aware of?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Xorg-edgers - When Does Experimental Become Mainstream

Jul 6, 2011

I started using Ubuntu Karmic on my old laptop w/ATI GPU and quickly realized the benefits of the xorg-edgers PPA. I understand that these packages are considered bleeding-edge, and do sometimes cause breakage. For me though , the pluses have vastly outweighed the minuses, which were negligible. I can't use any proprietary drivers w/my old card, and 3d is basically non-functional with the standard open ATI drivers. With xorg-edgers, I can use Compiz, play OpenArena and Quake Live.

Now after over a year and a half, 15 kernels and nearly 4 releases later, I'm really not sure how much progress has been made with the mainstream open ATI drivers, though I have been enjoying 3d with xorg-edgers. I really don't know how much of the bleeding-edge performance is due to the drivers, the kernel, xserver, or other libraries. I'm just looking forward to the day when my GPU is fully functional OOTB. how packages go from experimental to mainstream? Speculate on when open ATI development will be complete, and will that be all that is required for properly accelerated graphics?

I'd like to get the latest version of shotwell installed on each of those computers. That way I can share libraries among the computers and keep my pictures in sync with tags and events.

How would I go about doing that other than upgrading all the computers to 10.10. Is this something ubuntu can do or is this a downside of ubuntu?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Experimental Nvidia Working In Recovery Mode But Not After Normal Boot

Jun 28, 2011

I tried to make Compiz work using the experimental 3D support of the free Nvidia driver, because I am suffering from a bug in the proprietary driver (click here for launchpad entry). The free driver I mean is the one that shows up as "Experimental 3D support for NVIDIA cards" in the "Additional Drivers" manager (note: for some reason, this option will only present itself when no proprietary driver is currently active).

Now the strange thing is: the driver does not provide 3d support, and behaves generally awful (lots of glitches and so on) when I boot my system normally. But when instead I boot from the grub menu into recovery mode, then select "failsafe graphics", and then select "restart X", the whole thing works perfectly! So now I am running the experimental 3d driver, I have compositing working, 3d animations on docky. Somehow, the failsafe boot sequence does something right that my normal boot sequence does not. When I reboot in normal mode, everything is screwed up again.

I have no idea what statistics about my system I should include here, because I really have no idea what could possibly be wrong. I am running 32bits Natty in Classic mode, on an Ahtlon Dual Core 4850e machine, with a GeForce 6150 LE graphics card. These are the normal and recovery entries in my grub.cfg:

Code:

menuentry 'Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38-8-generic-pae' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os {
recordfail
set gfxpayload=$linux_gfx_mode
insmod part_msdos

Debian Multimedia :: How To Get VLC To Start At Specific Time In Media File

Mar 14, 2015

How do I get vlc to start at a specific time in a media file. I can do it easily in mplayer2, mpv but not vlc. Let's say the media file is named abc.avi (file format, container not important for this example.) Also the running time is around 2+ hrs. In mplayer2 and mpv I can simply do :-

Code: Select all$mpv abc.avi --start=00:59:00

And it will start running at that point in time.

In vlc, it also seems to have something at :-

Code: Select all[$] vlc --advanced --help
......
......

Playback control:
      --input-repeat <integer [-2147483648 .. 2147483647]>
                                 Input repetitions
      --start-time <float>       Start time

Now I don't understand what the <float> bit. I tried :-

Code: Select all$vlc abc.avi --start-time=00:59:00

But that didn't work. It's possible that it might be a bug, then again I might not have done it correctly.
