Ubuntu :: Netbook Wont Boot And Re-install Freezes

Feb 9, 2011

I recently installed ubuntu netbook remix on my laptop

(sony vaio 1.5GHZ core 2 duo, 1GB ram, intel integrated graphics)

and it was working fine until a faulty power outlet caused my laptop to turn off and on around 2 or 3 times in quick succession.

When i went to reboot, a screen appears with "GNU GRUB version ... " written on the top and i have the option to boot 4 different things, 2 of which are labeled " (recovery mode) " along with the option to do a " Memory Test "

Ive tried booting into all four, and each time a bunch of text streams by and then stops, leaving the prompt " (initramfs)_ " which stays forever, and means nothing to me.

So i decided to try and re-install using the same usb drive that worked before, and the installer boots up fine, but freezes once i click "Forward" to initiate the installation from within the ubuntu OS being run off the USB drive.

I tried using a few different USB drives, and a CD, i even tried installing regular Ubuntu 10.10, but the same thing happens each time - the installer doesn't respond once i click "forward" to initiate the installation.

Ubuntu :: Netbook Boots Into Setup Multiple Times Before Boot Or Freezes

Jun 4, 2011

I actually have it installed on two of my computers. One is an older Acer Aspire 3100 that dual-boots windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04, and an Acer Aspire ONE that has Ubuntu 11.04 as main OS. Before Ubuntu, (even currently) I'm a MAC user, and i'm really liking Ubuntu. On my 3100 it works just fine except the screen flicker on wake, but a quick reboot will solve that.

On my Aspire ONE i've had to re-install ubuntu multiple times. (we're talking 5 or 6 in the last month) Sometimes, it'll boot up to absolutely nothing. One time I got a weird error message everytime it booted. The last install froze up a lot, and eventually would only start to boot into setup. I reinstalled Ubuntu, again and it worked until I shut it off. Boot back up, same thing. Threw me right into setup. I was able to get around it after 5 or so tries of rebooting, hitting ALT F11 and somehow got into ubuntu recovery, but loaded normally. I'm using it now and it's working great currently.

Specs on the ONE

1.5GB Ram
8GB SSD (could this be the culprit?)
ATOM (1.8 or 1.6) GHz Processor.

Halfway through this fiasco, I put windows XP on it and used it solid for 3 days without any of the mentioned above issues.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Install On Netbook ?

Jun 14, 2010

I am running Windows 7 starter on my Samsung N150 Netbook. I have successfully installed Ubuntu on the 4 GB flash drive, and I have been running it for several weeks in the "try mode" without any problems. Now I decided to permanently install Ubuntu netbook edition on my computer from a flash drive. I am following this guide [url] and ran into a big problem on step #5 of the guide and step #4 of the installation. I am not getting the option of installing them side by side, choose between them each startup! Which is what I want to do... I am only getting the option of erase and use entire drive, and specify partitions manually. My goal is to keep Windows 7 on my netbook, and have an option of dual booting into either operating system.

Ubuntu :: Lucid Freezes When Restarting Netbook

Apr 30, 2010

I just finished a fresh install of Lucid netbook remix on my new Sony Vaio netbook. Everything seemed to go fine until a restart was required after installation was complete, when the monitor went black and the netbook just hung. The only way I could restart was to manually power off and on again. The installation seems to have completed fine and everything works after boot up. However, the netbook continues to freeze if I select restart from the power options. I know its not critical, but it is annoying. Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this?

OpenSUSE :: 11.4 KDE Netbook Freezes?

Apr 19, 2011

I'm using Opensuse 11.4 with KDE and have set the workspace type to "Netbook". Lately I have been experiencing complete freezes of the workspace (the horizontal panel and all it's widgets and elements, the activity pages and even yakuake won't respond to it's hotkey) but the Alt+tab and the Ctrl+Alt+F12345678 key combinations and other programs that might be already running (like firefox and Akregator) don't experience any problems and keep functioning uninterrupted. Sometimes the workspace remains unresponsive indefinitely and in other cases some prodding and left-right click spamming seems to remove the problem in some weird magic way... I usually notice that this freeze has happened after i decide to take a break from browsing with firefox and try to close it thru the 'application control settings' widget. That's when i find out that it's buttons can't be pressed and with an alt+tab to the desktop I see that I can't interact with it in any way. Most of the time i have to reboot my computer through the Ctrl+Alt+F1 terminal...

I also have to mention that i recently started using tumbleweed but the problem was there before that and nothing seems to have changed after the update from the tumbleweed repository.

General :: Install Ubuntu Netbook Edition To Dual Boot With XP?

Apr 21, 2011

I have a 160 GB Spaced 'HP Mini 1000' partitioned to two 80 GB drives. On one of them, Windows XP is already installed.

I would like to create a dual boot so that the other empty drive has Ubuntu Netbook edition 10.10.

I am a newbie with Linux, well versed with Windows and decided to venture with learning Linux by doing this.

So far, I have just downloaded the Netbook Edition from the following link.

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Boot LiveCD From USB On Netbook

May 15, 2010

I have an Acer Aspire One Netbook. Everytime I try to "burn" the live 11.2 GNOME CD to an USB drive (1GB) it fails on boot. I've tried unetbootin, the application from pendrivelinux.com as well. When it boots, it usually can't find the image. So I have to type in the name of the image by hand then press enter. I actually type the below in:

boot: openSUSE_Linux_(GNOME)

So it starts loading the image in text mode. I don't mind this, except it stops when it tries probing for the CD/DVD ROM.

rebootException failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drive

It just stops pass there. I've tried to add in the options acpi=off, but do I add it in before or after I enter in the image name? BTW, it doesn't boot in my laptop either.

General :: Install On Netbook That Will Only Boot From Hard Drive?

I bought a Samsung N150 netbook with the idea that I would install Linux on it.Now that I have it, I learn that it will *only* boot from the hard drive. there any Linux distribution that can install itself on this machine? Preferably in a separate partition allowing boot to either Linux or Win 7.This needs to be a high confidence installation, because if the existing Win 7 installation is screwed up there appears to be no way to recover.

Ubuntu Installation :: Lubuntu Install Freezes On Boot Up?

Aug 23, 2010

Linux newb here. I was looking for a lightweight distro that I really like and Lubuntu was it. I installed in on all three of my comps with out issues and my old Dell desktop(512mb ram) is flying now. Way faster than XP even right after a fresh install of both on the same desktop. On my fourth install, my girlfriends old toshiba laptop, it installed fine. After the restart and reboot it gets to the Lubuntu logo with the 5 dots under it. It gets through 4 of the dots then freezes. I left it for 20 minutes and it was stuck.

I tried booting from cd again and check disc for defects. It said it found 2 files with errors, press any key to reboot. Which I did and it just booted right back into the freeze. Maybe since I have to manually make it boot from cd every time it was wanting to boot back into the CD after the disc check, I'm not sure. I tried burning a new iso on a slower speed, same thing for a total of 3 reinstalls with the same effect. The only thing different about this install compared to my others is:

A) I had to flash the bios from windows before I started to even get the damn thing to be able to boot from CD

B) I decided to just wipe XP and install Lubuntu on the whole drive.

Ubuntu Installation :: Laptop Freezes After Boot With Fresh Install 10.04?

May 22, 2010

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-k195hp laptop, in which i've installed Ubuntu 10.04. Before installation i tried the Livedisk environment to make sure that everything would work out okay.

The results were fine, ubuntu even got the onboard Wireless card working which was causing problems in windows. But after the install ubuntu has become erratic. It sometimes boots and does a lot of work but other times it'll boot and freeze as soon as i move the mouse, or even earlier. I am pretty certain the CD was not the cause as i've already used it to install 10.04 in another system and i'm writing from it right now. I got the 10.04 iso on the day it came out and thought that maybe it wasn't complete so tried updating my install, but it had an error during the update installation.

Now even the live CD won't work as it hangs in the loading screen.

OpenSUSE Install :: Freezes On Boot Up After New Install?

Nov 16, 2009

I installed openSUSE earlier today, I have Windows 7 on this PC too. I installed using all the default option.Installed fine, booted up. Working perfectly. Used it for a few hoursI changed an option to enable the desktop effects (the 3d effects). When I did this the computer froze completely, I had to pull the plug. When I rebooted the computer froze on reboot.I get to the point where it displays the graphical screen, then the screen switches to the brighter green, higher resloution graphical screen. I get the white progress bar under the chameleon. It gets to half way. Then the mouse cursor becomes quite flickery and slow, and it doesn't progress any further. Again to reboot I have to pull the plug. (Although interestingly the contrast buttons (F4/F5 on my laptop still work).Steps I have taken.I have repeated the install, does exaclty the same thing.

I have downloaded the 32 bit version (I originally installed the 64 bit) and again resinstalled - does exactly the same thing)I have hit escape so I could see the not graphical boot screen, unfortunately it get past that, goes to the graphic screen/progress bar and then hangs at the same place. The LiveCD (running from the CD still works fine)I really dont know what to try. If nothing else could you tell me the quickest way to remove it, delete the grup bootloader and recover the space it took from my partitions.

Ubuntu Installation :: Aspire One D150 USB Install Freezes At Boot Time

Jun 28, 2010

I am trying to install ubuntu netbook edition on my Acer aspire one D150. I have tried to do this before with version 9 with no luck so I waited until 10 to see if the problem goes away; apparently it has not. I put the ubuntu install files onto a USB stick according to the instructions from ubuntu here for windows (I have windows xp on the netbook now).

When I shut the PC down and turn it back on with the USB key inserted, the laptop just seems to hang at the ACER splashscreen. This screen is where I could press F2 for setup or F12 for boot order; the buttons do not respond, the USB key appears inactive. Again, it just seems to hang. I've waited for as long as letting it run all night to see if it goes anywhere by the morning with no luck.

Debian Installation :: Boot Freezes After Install On Encrypted Volume

Jan 1, 2016

I just installed Debian Testing on an encrypted partition (using the encryption feature in the installer). Problem is when I boot I enter the passphrase and then Debian starts to load a bit and then it stops and won't move again. During a normal boot the boot stops after : EDAC sbridge : Couldn't find mci handler Then do a recovery mode boot from grub loader so more information is displayed during the boot time and it stops after : [12.513770] fb: switching to nouveaufb from simple it stops there I can't type anything, I can reboot the computer with ctrl+alt+del tho

I was booting just fine in a previous installation on a MBR-partitioned disk (now it's GPT-partitioned). I have to add that during installation I added a second encrypted volume on a HDD (while / is on a SSD) that mounts to /data. When few days ago I installed it on the MBR-partitioned disk it asked me for the /data passphrase pretty fast, now it just seems to boot and asks me only one passphrase until it freezes.

OpenSUSE Install :: System Freezes After GRUB (Normal Or Failsafe) Boot Splash Screen

Apr 17, 2011

I noticed that after making my build in suse studio my system freezes immediately after GRUB ( Normal or Failsafe) boot splash screen. I also noticed that this happens only with the specified kernel below. I'm not sure when using Kernel 2.6.37, one had the same problem. I never used it. The original kernel 2.6.34 had no problems such as the one I have described. My systems has no further problems only that it takes several restarts to go past the "Freeze". Below is a list of my system specs:

openSUSE 11.3
Kernel-pae 2.6.38.2-4.1 from Kernel Stable.
GRUB 0.97-174.1 from openSUSE 11.4
Upstart 0.6.5-33.1
xorg-x11-server 7.6_1.9.3-142.1 from X11:xorg 11.3 repo.

The GRUB from openSUSE 11.4 has been very stable and non-problematic. I will be buying an Intel core i5-2500K in a few months that's why I need the latest kernel and XOrg-X11-server. What could be causing the freezing?

Ubuntu Installation :: Xp And - Netbook Dual Boot - Error - Windows Boot Failed

Jul 8, 2010

I have a netbook running Windows XP as standard. There is also a recovery partition which came from the factory.

In the past I installed Ubuntu (I think 9.something) from USB key and all worked fine. However my XP became corrupted and I needed to do a repair on it. After this, Ubuntu became removed from the boot select menu.

Since then, Ubuntu has become updated to 10.04, which I now cannot install.

The Live CD tells me there is a "file IO error" and simply stops installation at around 70%.

I did manage to get into Ubuntu from a Live USB using Wubi. However when I chose to install Ubuntu to a Harddrive, the option to "install side by side" was missing.

After reading on the forums, I did a chkdsk /f on Windows and tried again. Now my liveUSB does not show a boot menu!

When I select to boot from USB stick, the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor. Ctrl+alt+dlt reboots.

I'm really lost here! It seems when I fix one problem, another problem arises!

Also when trying to instal Ubuntu within Windows, the process goes through to 100% and asks me to reboot. When I do so, the option for Ubuntu does show in the boot menu. However when I select it, I get an error "Windows boot failed: file wubildr.mbr and status: 0xc00000f - something is corrupt".

Ubuntu :: Cant Boot Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix On Netbook

Sep 19, 2010

Im a new linux user and so far im loving it, problem is i just tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 netbook remix onto my Compaq mini 311 (via usb) and at first i couldnt even install from the flash stick...finally managed to by formatting the flash with an HP tool and then creating the bootable Live OS with "Linux Live USB creator 2.6."

I selected to use the whole Hard disk to install (the hard disk was empty anyway as i recently formated the drive which had windows 7 on it)

The the installation completed successfully but the problem is that after rebooting the OS wouldnt boot, leaving me with a flashing cursor or _ on the top left of the screen...

I have tried everything i could think of, using different Usb creators, formatting the hard drive before re-installing but for some reason im still left with the same blinking cursor after every install.

I have just installed the regular version of ubuntu 9.04 which works perfectly after installing but id much rather use the netbook version of 10.04

(I assume the issue has something to do with the bootloader but im completely new to the topic so cant really troubleshoot)

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.0 Boot Freezes At "Setting Up Hardware Clock"?

Dec 21, 2010

I've got an OpenSUSE 11.0 machine that's been working fine for quite some time. Today it wasn't responding at all to HTTP or SSH requests, so I power-cycled it. Now it's freezing up during boot at "Setting up hardware clock". I can't get past it in the boot-up, whether I use the default or the failsafe boot options.

I'm able to fire it up with a 11.3 install DVD and enter the rescue mode. From there, though, I'm not sure what to do next.

I can't use YAST -- can't boot that far. Most of the threads I've found on this topic via Google recommend doing something in YAST, so I thought I'd nip that in the bud.

I did check the BIOS clock, and it was about a month slow. I reset it manually -- hopefully I haven't screwed myself completely.

Any assistance would be hugely appreciated. This box is running as a server for a few websites, and the users would like them back.

AFAIK this is OpenSUSE 11.0, 32-bit, but I could be mistaken. It might be 64-bit. Where would I check that prior to attempting to boot?

Ubuntu :: No Boot Menu On Netbook

Jan 3, 2010

I currently have an Acer Aspire One D250 netbook with Windows 7 Starter Edition, and I've decided to load Ubuntu 9.10 on it.

I put Ubuntu on my JumpDrive using this , and then began following the instructions from here, and I got to the part where it wanted me to enter my Boot Menu by holding F2 to enter setup... but it sent me straight to a menu that only allowed me to boot from Windows 7 or to run a Windows Memory System Diagnostic. Advanced options by pressing F8 only allowed me to change how Windows 7 started, but no where in the setup does it allow me to enter the boot menu and tell it to boot from my jump drive.

I'm not sure if it's a limitation on my model, the OS, or if I'm am missing something obvious. I've beaten Google to death, but the only thing I have gotten from there are topics on people trying to boot from XP versus Windows 7 on a duel partitioned hard drive, or people who's laptops won't start up at all.

I also tried running the "Help Boot from CD" that came on the jumpdrive, but it said there was a system error and that it could not install properly.
