UNR 10.04, Dell Mini 9, 2GB RAM, 16GB SSD, 16GB SDHC
Instead of going to sleep when I close the lid, my DM9 freezes. Is there a way to cure that? That didn't happen with 9.04.
My netbook does not hibernate when lid is closed. Sometimes it does but usually not. At first I was thinking it was getting confused after recharging, thinking it was still in AC mode. I suppose it could be some process running in the background but don't know how to identify which one would cause that. If that were the case, would I be able to manually go to Hibernate?
I've checked my preferences and "On Battery Power" "When Lid is closed" is set to Hibernate.
I have an ASUS 1000. I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 9.1 karmic.
If I close my laptop lid for more than a few seconds, my screen will become completely unresponsive, aside from the cursor. Any idea what could be causing this?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Ubuntu 10.4 on an older Dell System (Optiplex GX150) but it just hangs during startup (I can log in and I see the mouse pointer but nothing else happens) so I think the system is just too old and weak to run 10.4. What I would like to know: would it be possible to run a netbook remix version of Ubuntu on such and old pc or does the netbook version specifically require an Intel Atom Processor?

1 GHz Pentium III
256 MB RAM
20 GB HDD
I am using Ubuntu11.11 on my Samsung netbook. Since my installation, I am meeting a problem from time to time that the process kswapd0 leads to high data exchange of my solid-state hard-disk, and freezes the entire system which forces me to restart my computer. This problem occurs even though kswapd0 occupies only 28% CPU resource.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Mini 9 with a failed SSD. I created a bootable USB drive from the Ubuntu-10.10-netbook-i386.iso. It boots up the Dell Mini ok. If after selecting 'try ubuntu' from the Live USB and setting the desktop and wireless up, is there a way I could image that config on the same or different USB. It would be like installing Ubuntu 10.10 on a USB device instead of a HD. The Mini has 1G RAM.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just finished a fresh install of Lucid netbook remix on my new Sony Vaio netbook. Everything seemed to go fine until a restart was required after installation was complete, when the monitor went black and the netbook just hung. The only way I could restart was to manually power off and on again. The installation seems to have completed fine and everything works after boot up. However, the netbook continues to freeze if I select restart from the power options. I know its not critical, but it is annoying. Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using Opensuse 11.4 with KDE and have set the workspace type to "Netbook". Lately I have been experiencing complete freezes of the workspace (the horizontal panel and all it's widgets and elements, the activity pages and even yakuake won't respond to it's hotkey) but the Alt+tab and the Ctrl+Alt+F12345678 key combinations and other programs that might be already running (like firefox and Akregator) don't experience any problems and keep functioning uninterrupted. Sometimes the workspace remains unresponsive indefinitely and in other cases some prodding and left-right click spamming seems to remove the problem in some weird magic way... I usually notice that this freeze has happened after i decide to take a break from browsing with firefox and try to close it thru the 'application control settings' widget. That's when i find out that it's buttons can't be pressed and with an alt+tab to the desktop I see that I can't interact with it in any way. Most of the time i have to reboot my computer through the Ctrl+Alt+F1 terminal...
I also have to mention that i recently started using tumbleweed but the problem was there before that and nothing seems to have changed after the update from the tumbleweed repository.
I recently installed ubuntu netbook remix on my laptop
(sony vaio 1.5GHZ core 2 duo, 1GB ram, intel integrated graphics)
and it was working fine until a faulty power outlet caused my laptop to turn off and on around 2 or 3 times in quick succession.
When i went to reboot, a screen appears with "GNU GRUB version ... " written on the top and i have the option to boot 4 different things, 2 of which are labeled " (recovery mode) " along with the option to do a " Memory Test "
Ive tried booting into all four, and each time a bunch of text streams by and then stops, leaving the prompt " (initramfs)_ " which stays forever, and means nothing to me.
So i decided to try and re-install using the same usb drive that worked before, and the installer boots up fine, but freezes once i click "Forward" to initiate the installation from within the ubuntu OS being run off the USB drive.
I tried using a few different USB drives, and a CD, i even tried installing regular Ubuntu 10.10, but the same thing happens each time - the installer doesn't respond once i click "forward" to initiate the installation.
I've installed successfully the ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix on my DELL Latitude 430.Everything work out of the box except the wifi, I cannot find a way to get working.Using the lshw command, I can see that the interface is listed, but status is disabled.On the Network Manager, status I get is device not ready.As a FYI, bluetooth seems working perfect (I've not tried to pair with any device)as this is the only roadblock I face before enjoying Ubuntu on my laptop.

So i select boot with removable disk, but then it just resumes to boot as windows as it normally does. I need to get this menu right so I can install Ubuntu...My computer is a Dell inspiron mini 10 (1012).

One is an older Acer Aspire 3100 that dual-boots windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04, and an Acer Aspire ONE that has Ubuntu 11.04 as main OS. Before Ubuntu, (even currently) I'm a MAC user, and i'm really liking Ubuntu. On my 3100 it works just fine except the screen flicker on wake, but a quick reboot will solve that.
On my Aspire ONE i've had to re-install ubuntu multiple times. (we're talking 5 or 6 in the last month) Sometimes, it'll boot up to absolutely nothing. One time I got a weird error message everytime it booted. The last install froze up a lot, and eventually would only start to boot into setup. I reinstalled Ubuntu, again and it worked until I shut it off. Boot back up, same thing. Threw me right into setup. I was able to get around it after 5 or so tries of rebooting, hitting ALT F11 and somehow got into ubuntu recovery, but loaded normally. I'm using it now and it's working great currently.

1.5GB Ram
8GB SSD (could this be the culprit?)
ATOM (1.8 or 1.6) GHz Processor.
Halfway through this fiasco, I put windows XP on it and used it solid for 3 days without any of the mentioned above issues.
I recently got a Canon Powershot SD780 IS. It takes HD video at 780p. It's great, except that the videos won't display properly in Ubuntu Netbook Remix (Lucid) on my Dell Mini 10v.I've tried using Gstreamer (Banshee), Xine (Totem-xine), and MPlayer (GNOME MPlayer). These all should have worked, which makes me think something may be wrong either with the files themselves or my computer. Anyone have any idea what's going on here?FYI, when I pull up the Properties dialogue for one of the videos and look in the Audio/Video tab, it says:

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been running 32 bit karmic (and before that jaunty, intrepid and hardy) with no problems on my Dell D620 laptop. Since I upgraded to lucid, I get occasional freezes. It often happens at the gnome login screen after I click on my name but before I can enter the password, or upon restore from suspend but sometimes at other times. It doesn't happen all the time but often enough to be really annoying. When the freeze occurs, the mouse pointer responds to the touchpad or an external usb mouse, but no mouse button events are recognized and the keyboard has no effect either. I can't switch virtual terminals or anything. If the system was up and had a DHCP address at the time of the freeze, I believe the network still responds to ping. The only thing I can do to get the system back is hold the power button for 30 seconds until it powers off. The desktop CPU temperature monitor does not indicate excessive heating at the time of the freeze. I don't know whether I should try a re-install of lucid, or just go back to karmic.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have problems with my laptop which runs well until it decides to freeze and it either shuts down or I have to turn it off. After I restart the system there is no hdd check to signal that something really wrong happened. I suspect the nVidia driver for the Quadro FX 770M video card is responsible but I am not sure. Also, firefox sometimes runs sluggish (maybe flash is causing something to overcharge?) and often times the computer freezes when I am using firefox. The funny thing is that all my heavy simulations are not causing problems and often times they use 10GB of swap with no complains. When the laptop freezes I see two keyboard lights flashing intermittently. How can I figure out what is going on? I mean are there any log files where I can look for something or can I setup a log procedure to detect the cause of this problem?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed debian-6.0.1a-i386-netinst yesterday on my Dell Dimension 4100. I have a serial keyboard and mouse, which both worked fine during the install and the keyboard allowed me to enter the correct passphrase. After I enter the passphrase the PC continues to boot up, and it gets to a black screen with small fuzzy/distorted "DELL" logo's on the top part of the screen going from left to right.
What is wrong with my PC? What can I do to troubleshoot this?
I really would like to get debian up and running on this desktop
I have Dell Vostro laptop with Core2 processor 1.8 GHz, 2 GB RAM. I want to install Fedora. I tried to install it with Fedora_14_ 32 bit and Fedora_14_ 64 bit. After booting by DVD or USB, I get initial blue screen in which I select Install and it starts for few seconds and freezes there, it does not move ahead. I got Fedora 32 bit DVD from Fedora so it should have come with checksum checked. So IMO DVD is ok, it is something else with regard to hardware detection, stopping installation to go ahead. I tried 3 times, but do not go ahead.

The reoccurring problem that I am encountering is that when I boot from the USB-drive and begin to install everything seems to be working, and then it is stuck at the menu where it asks who are you?; and of course i have filled in everything asked and at the bottom where you can look at what its doing in the terminal/detail section all it says is ready when you are, and the forward tap is unselectable.
Why i cant change from 800x480 to 1024x600, that this model of EEE pc doesnt support anything higher than 800x480 at the 10:1 ratio...
Firstly my question is, is it ACTUALLY possible to 'overclock' this type of netbook to run a higher res?
Im running ubtuntu netbook remix 10.04 and am new to linux (again, so sorry) so be nice, and ive tried getting my head around this 'sudo' stuff, and the xorg.conf file (which is nowhere to be found) and ive even tried a program calld astray but im pretty sure ive exhausted my patience as trying to self-teach . . .
And ive also tried to much around with xrandr or whatever that command was.. but i cant really get my head around it, and it kept telling me the resolution didnt exist ect...
For the past 2hrs I have been struggling to make KDE launch plasma-dekstop instead of plasma-netbook, but all in vain.I removed, then purged plasma-netbook and plasma-netbook-default-settings packages but after logging out and re-logging in the Netbook UI was back! After restarting the system now I can't even seem to get the KDM. I am greeted with a black screen.--- I restarted the system again and the nasty little bugger is back again! This is so frustrating. How do I get plasma-desktop to load instead?---- Great now I can see that plasma-desktop and plasma-netbook both are running simultaneously! netbook on top of desktop. So my final Q is how do I stop plasma-netbook from loading?

I installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 and immediately noticed the keyboard of my eeepc 1000HE was abnormally warm. Since I dual boot XP I booted to XP and found the fan running faster to compensate for the previous heat. This did not happen on Ubuntu-the fan just was barely running. I had to place the side of the netbook in order to feel the fan running. I issued "sensors" in terminal and it showed 67 degrees C for the cpu temp. Is the latest Ubuntu such a resource hug that it heats up the CPU?
