Ubuntu :: Missing Menu Button And Default Buttons?
Jul 17, 2011Had a power outage , when I restarted the pc the tool bar came up empty. No menu button or default icons. How can I repair this ?

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Buttons Moved To The Right Menu Button Error
Jul 10, 2011I am using ubuntu 11.04 and I moved the maximize, minimize and close buttons to the right corner using gconf-editor besides that, I added the menu button to the left corner that's the one which is causing problems.
Whenever I click it, all window decorations (meaning borders) disappear.
I end up with two options, either logging out and back into ubuntu, what restarts all programs (as well as compiz as far as I understand) and the problem is gone (at least temporarily) the other nonpermanent fix is to disable and reenable window decorations in the compizconfig settings manager, the result of that action is not really a fix, since it leaves my top panel (which is usually transparent) completely scrambled

General :: Mouse Button Programming - How Two Smaller Buttons Addressed
Apr 14, 2010I have a Logitech ambidextrous trackball, with a left and right mouse button. The trackball device also has two smaller left and right buttons. I'd like to know how those two smaller buttons are addressed. Ultimately, I'd like to assign certain keystrokes to them, to make work faster. For example, ALT+<right arrow> moves a browser back one page. how to name these keys, or whether/how I should address this USB mouse. FWIW, I'm actually using it through the PS/2 mouse adapter, since that doesn't take a USB slot.

May 31, 2010Ive been using opensuse for a little while now. Recently ran into a problem My favorite mouse broke, so i went out and got a travel one. It has a very toucht third button under the scroll wheel. Apperently this button is to paste, but every time i scroll, it makes my life miserable, especially when im reading a lengthy page in firefox. I cannot figure out how to program the buttons. Ive googled, and seen some programs that MIGHT help. but this seems to be something that is built in to the OS. The mouse yast plugin doesnt give you the choice of shuting off the third button, or even reassigning it. I want the paste functionality GONE from my **** mouse

Jul 6, 2010when I boot up ubuntu, the suspend and hibernate buttons will be missing and the alsa stuff wont work. When I select shutdown or restart or log out from the power menu ( the one that's missing the 2
buttons) it only logs off the user. I've tried reinstalling the kernel and updating grub for a solution to no avail. The only way to shutdown the system when this occurs is through a sudo halt command in terminal. I may have to use the command a few times until the computer will boot with sound and all of the suspend/hibernate buttons in place.

1. I have to leave this terminal open permanently. If I try to close it (and "kill" the process) not only do I lose my windows controls but my keyboard stops working entirely.
2. Have to put this in every time I log back in.
Is there a better solution for restoring my windows control buttons (i.e., one that doesn't require me to open a terminal every time I log in?)

Sep 18, 2010I've been using 10.04 for a few months here and installed the truglass 0.5 theme for quite some time. I've been putting up with one downfall of it, which is on certain windows the min/max/close buttons do not show. I can hover over where they should be to actually use them, but they are not visible on all windows. They always come up with firefox, unless I hit a pop-up and a new window comes up. Any nautilus window doesn't have them unless focus on that window is lost. Any ideas on how I can solve this? See attached screenshot.

Apr 29, 2011I've just upgraded to 11.04 and really like it so far, everything seems to be running smoothly and I had no issues apart from a broken Emerald which I removed (and installed compiz-gnome and then made gtk-window-decorator the default, which fixed Unity segfaulting on Emerald).
My problem now is that when I use the Unity dash to search for something, it takes a while to search and then finds nothing. I'm pretty sure I should have things like "text editor", "gimp", "update manager", so I would think this is some manner of bug.
In addition to that, the following buttons don't do anything if I click on them:
- Media Apps
- Internet Apps
- More Apps
- Find Files
Ubuntu :: Power Button Missing In Lucid?
Jan 11, 2011I've installed lucid on two computers now and have been using or a few months.Overall, it's pretty good and everything just works. However, every now and then (seemingly random), the power button in the indicator appletsion panel widget randomly disappears, so I'm unable to shut down my computer without re-adding the widget, or using the command line to shutdown the computer. Now this is acceptable for me, an advanced user. However, this is not acceptable for my parents and family, who also use ubuntu computers. Today, my mother called me to ask why she couldn't turn off her computer. I was dumbfounded, and had to walk her through turning it off "by hand."
Now this is not me accidentally removing the indicator applet session panel item. No, I can still see the user name bubble with availability information and I can still switch users. It's just that the power button is completely missing (sometimes the place where it used to be is occupied by a corrupt graphic). Additionally, if I login later, the power button magically returns without me having to do anything with regards to the panel. This is disappointing indeed.
Honestly, this is why ubuntu and linux in general still have the reputation they do of being non-user-friendly. At least in windows or mac, when I get fed-up I can turn it off. But not so in ubuntu. No ubuntu tortures me continuously and I marvel that such a simple thing has escaped the minds of such advanced programmers. I wish Canonical would focus on letting us TURN OFF the computer instead of adding crazy features that I'm not going to use. I mean how can a real operating system fail at such a simple task

Mar 12, 2011Whenever i click on an icon in the Places pull down menu (except Computer, Network, Connect To Server and Search For Files) nothing happens except I get Ktorrent popping up and claiming it cant open the selected Drive or Folder because it is not a valid torrent file. Which is fair enough, 'cos its not a torrent. Its the entry for my Desktop in a pull down menu in my O/S, and it does this even when I haven't been near Ktorrent in the previous hundred clicks of the mouse, or if Ktorrent is not running. If i un-install Ktorrent, the error message changed, but the correct windows did not open when asked from the Places pull down, and the error returns when its re installed- well, tried it once, in a very basic fashion through the software center.
I think the problem has been caused by two containing folders of torrent data files that have become stuck as entrys in the Pllaces menu- cack handed off me folks, was playing with new mouse settings as I was playing with new mouse settings. Problem may also be something to do with the problems I have been having with Ktorrent- it refuses to accept torrent files unless through a magnet link, bringing up the same "parse error- not valid torrent file" error message as comes up from the Places menu, only of course citing the torrent i just tried, when I know for sure the file is valid and operational because Transmission has no problem with it.I really hope someone can help me fix this, as formatting and re-installing will be a real ball ache, as I'm a new user who's spent the last week learning and starting the customization process, and I was just getting to think about backing it all up.System is Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit, Pentium quad core, one 250Gb system drive and another larger drive called storage that appears under Media path both SATA2, no DVD drive as connector is in the post.
General :: When Switch Buttons In Synaptics Touchpad - Tapping Gives A Right-click Menu
Jan 23, 2010I work on a laptop and typically have a USB mouse plugged in. Each time I start an X session, I switch my mouse buttons with an: Quote:

If I decide to unplug the mouse and work with the touchpad, I must always reverse the options again to pointer = 1 2 3, or else, while the right and the left button still work as a left-handed mouse, tapping, instead of acting like a left-click, gives a right-click menu. My touchpad is listed as:
'ImPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad'
using the evdev driver.
I admit that I haven't played much with alternate xmodmap configurations, but I'd like to sort this out. It's even more confusing since I don't have a xorg.conf and, if I manually add one, despite having tried repeatedly, I can't make X-server to read it.
